An F/A-18 naval fighter jet from the aircraft carrier USS ‘Ronald Reagan’ crashed into the Philippine Sea near Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, with both pilots rescued.

The aircraft crashed after suffering a “mechanical issue” while traveling on a routine mission in the Philippine Sea, the US Navy said in a statement, adding that both pilots successfully ejected and were quickly recovered by the USS ‘Ronald Reagan.’

According to the Japanese Coast Guard, the incident happened 300km southwest of Kitadaitojima Island, which is part of the nation’s Okinawa Prefecture.

The aircraft carrier resumed normal operations, and the US Navy launched an official probe into the crash.

The lost plane belonged to the US 7th Fleet, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan. Over the past two years, the fleet gained a notorious reputation of the most ‘disaster-prone’ detachment of the US Navy. It was blighted by high-profile incidents, including ship collisions, which claimed the lives of numerous servicemen.

Last month, an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter crash-landed on the deck of the USS ‘Ronald Reagan.’ In June, an F-15 fighter jet crashed into the sea near Okinawa. There were no fatalities in these incidents.

The Stolen Campaign Documents That Helped Reagan Win the Presidency https://briefnews.eu/the-stolen-campaign-documents-that-helped-reagan-win-the-presidency/ https://briefnews.eu/the-stolen-campaign-documents-that-helped-reagan-win-the-presidency/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2018 14:05:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-stolen-campaign-documents-that-helped-reagan-win-the-presidency/

It was about as high stakes a presidential debate as there has been in American history. When President Jimmy Carter and Republican party nominee Ronald Reagan squared off on Oct. 28, 1980, in Cleveland for their one and only debate of that election, there was just one week to go before Americans cast their ballots. There was no early voting, the nation was gripped by an ongoing hostage crisis in Tehran, and the two candidates were running close in the polls. This was perhaps Reagan’s last, best chance to dethrone the Democratic incumbent.

The highlight footage from the debate tends to focus on Reagan’s winning quip, “There you go again,” but that disarming rejoinder to Carter’s pointed critique of the Republican challenger was just one rhetorical flourish in a remarkably sharp debate performance from the former California governor. All night long, Reagan responded with ease to Carter’s attacks, batting them away with well-prepared facts, figures and pithy one-liners.

Three years later — long after Reagan came from behind to beat Carter and become president — a potential reason for Reagan’s successful debate performance rocked the nation: Carter’s debate briefing books, stolen from the White House, had ended up with members of the Reagan campaign shortly before the pivotal debate. And a good quarter century before the current unfolding scandal surrounding the use by President Donald Trump’s campaign of emails hacked by Russians from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, another scandal erupted in D.C. — known as “Debategate” — that promised to tarnish the victory of a sitting president and take down some of his top officials.

The Reagan campaign was pulling out all the stops to prepare their telegenic candidate for the pivotal debate.

With Reagan starting to pull even with Carter in the polls in late October, the Reagan campaign was pulling out all the stops to prepare their telegenic candidate for the pivotal debate. A series of rehearsal debates was planned to take place in a television studio built into a garage in Reagan’s rental house in Wexford, Virginia, with Michigan congressman David A. Stockman playing Carter. And, just a few days before the real debate, a set of papers titled “Presidential Debate Briefing Book,” containing 69 questions and answers, including a number of potential lines of attack on Reagan, went missing from the White House and found its way into the hands of key Reagan campaign officials.

While it never emerged that Reagan himself was aware of the pilfered papers, they were used by campaign aides in his debate preparations. Stockman later admitted that he used the briefing book to prepare for his role as President Carter. The end product of the extensive debate prep, whatever the means, was a polished candidate, one who, as a former actor, certainly knew his lines. “He has his memorized tapes,” Carter wrote in his diary of Reagan’s delivery of certain soundbites in the debate. “He pushes a button and they come out.” Reagan’s performance in the debate would catapult him to a big victory a week later, when he would win 44 of 50 states — and with them the presidency. In a race that had been a virtual tie before the debate, says Daniel Urman, a law and politics expert at Northeastern University, Reagan’s debate performance helped him pull away.

News of the stolen briefing book did not emerge until June 1983, when a book about Reagan by Time White House correspondent Laurence Barrett reported the theft. The revelation set off a firestorm in the nation’s capital. Many of the individuals involved in Reagan’s campaign and debate prep now occupied high-level positions in his administration, including Chief of Staff James Baker and CIA Director William J. Casey, and it looked like the brewing Debategate scandal — one of the first to bear the -gate suffix in the wake of Watergate — might take them down.

Reagan denied any knowledge of the stolen briefing book, but Congress launched a 10-month investigation that cost half a million dollars and resulted in a 2,500-page report. It turned out that Reagan campaign officials had shown little interest in how the book was obtained, or the ethics of using it since it was not marked as classified, but they insisted that it had not played a major part in the candidate’s debate preparations. The investigation also failed to uncover the actual thief. And so the scandal died out, no administration officials were fired and Reagan sailed to reelection in 1984.

Decades later, however, a Reagan biographer named Craig Shirley claimed to have unearthed the culprit. He pointed to a Carter-hating Democrat (and die-hard supporter of Carter’s 1980 primary opponent, Ted Kennedy): Paul Corbin, who died in 1990. Corbin had denied wrongdoing before Congress but hinted to friends over the years that he had been behind it.

So did the stolen briefing book change history? Carter was a hobbled president going into the debate and it may have only solidified support that was already heading Reagan’s way. As Reagan asked voters in his effective closing argument — another aspect of his impressive performance, and one not derived from stolen papers: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” And for many Americans the answer to that question was no.

Inbound and outbound flights are on hold in the US capital’s primary airport, as it experiences a complete power outage. Stranded travelers have been posting images of the sudden blackout on social media.

Late Wednesday evening, the airport’s official account tweeted the management was aware of an “airport-wide” power outage and was investigating its cause.

Confused passengers have been tweeting photos and videos of the airport’s halls, plunged into darkness by the outage. Announcers are reportedly saying the facility is running on auxiliary power, but judging by the images, the lighting is minimal. One user said luggage belts are not running, either.

Donald Trump Is No Ronald Reagan https://briefnews.eu/donald-trump-is-no-ronald-reagan/ https://briefnews.eu/donald-trump-is-no-ronald-reagan/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 03:07:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/donald-trump-is-no-ronald-reagan/ “We’re like the piggy bank that everybody’s robbing,” President Donald Trump said at a Saturday news conference at the G7 summit in Canada. “And that ends.”

The president, who perceives that the U.S. is being treated unfairly by its trading partners, had imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, along with a threat of further penalties. After a press conference in which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated that his country plans to retaliate against the new tariffs, Trump said that when it comes to a potential trade battle, “We win that war a thousand times out of a thousand.”

Trump’s tariffs puzzle many economists; they are unlikely to effectively address China’s oversupply of steel or to lower U.S. trade deficits. But the decision is consistent with his rhetoric on the campaign trail, when he invoked Ronald Reagan’s example. “President Reagan deployed similar trade measures when motorcycle and semiconductor imports threatened U.S. industry,” Trump said in a June 2016 campaign speech in Pennsylvania. “I remember. His tariff on Japanese motorcycles was 45 percent, and his tariff to shield America’s semiconductor industry was 100 percent, and that had a big impact, folks. A big impact.”

Reagan did impose tariffs on Japanese motorcycles, electronics, and other products. But while these penalties could be seen by some as a precursor to Trump’s recent decisions, there are some critical differences. Reagan’s actions were more targeted, and he also promoted some free-trade policies alongside them, including proposing a North American common market. Perhaps more important is the fact that, according to a recent study, it wasn’t really the tariffs, but another policy altogether, that helped U.S. businesses compete in a global economy: Reagan’s change to the tax code in 1981, establishing the federal Research and Experimentation Tax Credit to subsidize innovation.

Businesses can claim the tax credit if they are working to develop new, improved, or technologically advanced products or trade processes. Created as a temporary incentive for two years, the credit was extended repeatedly by Congress until it became permanent in 2015. (The credit was briefly in jeopardy during the tax-bill negotiations last year, but the final version preserved its benefits.) Most U.S. states, too, now offer tax incentives for research and development.

In the 1980s, this stimulus induced companies to innovate and catch up to their foreign competitors, according to the economists who co-authored the recent study: Ufuk Akcigit of the University of Chicago, Sina T. Ates of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and Giammario Impullitti of the University of Nottingham. They describe how, in the second half of the 1970s, U.S. manufacturing productivity was lagging behind that of other advanced economies, and technological competition from Japan, Germany, and France was increasing. While U.S. residents filed 70 percent of patent applications in the United States in 1975, that share had fallen to closer to 60 percent by 1981.

Then, as now, “there was concern that the U.S. was losing leadership,” Akcigit told me. It could have just isolated itself from the world economy. “But instead, the U.S. decided to subsidize its industries quite strongly.” International competition, according to Akcigit and his colleagues, has two playing fields: a company’s home market and its foreign markets. In open economies, companies first have to push hard to improve their productivity and quality of goods, or they will be vulnerable to foreign competitors encroaching on their turf. Second, large businesses can gain share in foreign markets.

In the absence of tariffs, research and development subsidies will encourage companies to make long-term investments to improve their competitive position at home and abroad, the researchers find. After the creation of the federal and state R&D tax credits, U.S. businesses began to catch up to their foreign counterparts; the intensity of their research spending increased, and, after continuing to fall for a few more years, their share of patent applications rebounded by the mid-1990s to above 60 percent.

Akcigit and his co-authors find that economies benefit more in the long run by subsidizing innovation than by stifling trade. Having recently visited Germany, Akcigit cited the rivalry between BMW and Tesla as an example of international competition pressuring companies to develop new products. BMW felt the pressure on the market when Tesla came along, he said. “Now they are pushing hard for electric cars. The consumers are benefiting from it: The price of electric cars will come down.”

Why, though, do businesses need subsidies? The research-and-development tax credit has been controversial at times, with some economists arguing that businesses would have made the investments anyway. But R&D spending has an uncertain payoff, Akcigit argues, and new products and business processes benefit all of society, not just the company that creates them. His research shows that subsidies induce businesses to invest more in long-term innovation than they would have otherwise.

In this analysis, Reagan’s tax credit looks like a smart move. Then, there’s the separate issue of his tariffs, including the 49.4 percent import duty on Japanese motorcycles, imposed in 1983 to benefit Harley-Davidson, which was struggling at the time. Harley revived its business and returned to profitability by 1986, but it’s not clear that the tariffs were responsible. A study conducted for Japan’s Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry, by Taiju Kitano and Hiroshi Ohashi of the University of Tokyo, credited Harley’s internal improvements, including reducing the share of motorcycles it produced with defective parts from around 50 percent to 2 percent.

“For years we tried to figure out why the Japanese were beating us so badly,” Vaughn L. Beals, Harley’s former CEO, told The New York Times. “First we thought it was their culture. Then we thought it was automation. Then we thought it was dumping. Finally we realized the problem was us, not them.” (Among the EU’s current targets for duties on U.S. imports are Harley motorcycles. Harley said the retaliation would have a “significant impact” on its sales.)

Akcigit, Ates, and Impullitti find that protectionism can lead to short-run gains for an economy—say, over 10 to 15 years—as businesses temporarily reap higher profits. This only works, though, if a country can impose tariffs without retaliation. That’s an unlikely scenario, as evidenced by the fierce response to Trump’s import duties. If countries retaliate, the researchers find, global competition diminishes, and everyone suffers because of slower technological progress.

Over a longer period, whether countries retaliate or not, consumers in the country that imposes the tariffs become much worse off. If countries do not retaliate, companies have less fear of foreign competitors entering their home market. If countries do retaliate, companies have fewer opportunities to expand overseas. Either way, businesses in the home market have less motivation to come up with new ideas. “You are shielding them from international competition,” Akcigit said, “so they become lazier.”

This is the opposite of the argument from the White House. “We may have a little bit of short-term pain, but we’re certainly going to have long-term success,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters in April.

Akcigit said policymakers face one important question: How much do you care about the future? If an administration could impose tariffs unilaterally, at least during a single election cycle, “they will just see the benefits of it as a politician,” he said. “But as a citizen of the country, in the long run, the society will be hurt by this.”

DUBAI (Reuters) – Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday US President Donald Trump would fail in his hardened stance towards Iran, saying Tehran was stronger than during the time of the “more powerful and smarter” Ronald Reagan.

“Reagan was more powerful and smarter than Trump, and he was a better actor in making threats, and he also moved against us and they shot down our plane,” Khamenei said in a speech carried on state television.

In 1988, a US warship shot down an Iranian passenger plane over the Gulf, killing all 290 aboard, in an incident which Washington said was a mistake. Tehran said it was a deliberate attack on Iran, then at war with neighboring Iraq.

“But Reagan is gone and, according to out beliefs, he now faces God’s retribution … while Iran has made great advances in all areas since Reagan’s time,” Khamenei added. “This trend will continue under the current American president and any hopes on their part that the Islamic Republic would back off or weaken is futile.”

Trump refused in October to certify that Tehran is complying with its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and warned he might ultimately terminate the agreement.

He announced the shift in US policy in a speech in which he detailed a more aggressive approach to Iran over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and its support for militant groups in the Middle East.

Under the nuclear deal, sanctions on Iran were lifted in return for Tehran rolling back technologies with nuclear bomb-making potential.

In a televised broadside, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to “disappoint America in all arenas,” and unfavorably compared Donald Trump to predecessor Ronald Reagan.

“Reagan was more powerful and smarter than Trump, and he was a better actor in making threats, and he also moved against us and they shot down our plane,” said Khamenei in Wednesday’s speech, referring to the gunning down of an Iran Air passenger jet carrying 290 people on-board in 1988, which the US has always insisted was an accident.

“But Reagan is gone and, according to our beliefs, he now faces God’s retribution, while Iran has made great advances in all areas since Reagan’s time. This trend will continue under the current American president and any hopes on their part that the Islamic Republic would back off or weaken is futile.”

Khamenei, 78, was the President of Iran for almost the entirety of Reagan’s two terms, before ascending to his current position as the Islamic Republic’s head of state in 1989.

The Supreme Leader, a summary of whose remarks was posted to his English-language Twitter account, also attacked Washington’s international and domestic policies.
“U.S. govt spends a tremendous amount of money on sowing discord among people, and takes up the wealth of rich rulers in the region. By God’s Grace— they should know— we will progress powerfully. By God’s will, we will disappoint U.S. on all arenas,” tweeted Khamenei.

In a related message, the Supreme Leader accused the US of “supporting ISIS,” backing Saudi Arabia’s “tyrannical ruling family” and helping perpetrate “Zionist atrocities in Palestine.”

“The U.S. gov. commits oppression inside the U.S., too. U.S. police murder black women, men, & children for no justifiable reason, and the murderers are acquitted in U.S. courts. This is their judicial system! And they slam other countries’ and our country’s judicial system,” added Khamenei, ending the post with the hashtag #BLM – Black Lives Matter – to signal Iran’s support for the grassroots minority rights movement.

After a period of reconciliation under President Barack Obama, and the relatively moderate Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, relations between Tehran and Washington thawed, culminating in the nuclear deal signed in 2015, which eased sanctions against the country in exchange for restrictions on its atomic program. Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the agreement, and vowed to reverse it, while also painting Tehran as America’s greatest adversary in the region.

  • The NFIB’s measure of small business optimism reached its highest level in 34 years in November.
  • A handful of more specific indexes also climbed to record or near-record levels.

A measure of US small business optimism hit its highest level since 1983 last month, according to a National Federation of Independent Business survey released Tuesday.

The index gained 3.7 points in November, a big jump from the near-record performance seen in the previous month, NFIB data showed. In addition, eight of 10 components posted gains, including a rare 16-point increase in a reading of expected better business conditions.

“Not since the roaring Reagan economy has small business optimism been as high as it was in November,” NFIB wrote in its release.

Here are some other key takeaways from the report:

  • Job creation plans increased six points in November, “providing more evidence of a strong labor market,” said the NFIB
  • The number of owners who said it’s a “good time to expand” rose 4 points
  • A net 24% of respondents said they plan to create new jobs, up 6 points to a record reading

“We haven’t seen this kind of optimism in 34 years, and we’ve seen it only once in the 44 years that NFIB has been conducting this research,” Juanita Duggan, the organization’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Small business owners are exuberant about the economy, and they are ready to lead the U.S. economy in a period of robust growth.”

With the crisis surrounding Pyongyang escalating, Washington’s only carrier based outside America, USS ‘Ronald Reagan’, conducted what have been described as “routine” military drills in the South China Sea under the vigilant eye of China.

F-18 Super Hornet jet fighters took off from the deck of the USS ‘Ronald Reagan’ aircraft carrier on Saturday as two Chinese frigates maintained a line-of-sight vigil, Reuters reported.

Officers on the Japanese-based ‘Reagan’ described frequent close-quarter surveillance from the ships of the People’s Liberation Army Navy in international waters, saying that at times Chinese vessels shadow the carrier en route to other destinations. Chinese frigates linger for days in the vicinity of US ships and planes that protect the ‘Reagan’.

The crew of the carrier ensure safe passage by alerting their unwanted Chinese escorts when the ‘Reagan’ sharply alters course, according to officers.

“We’ve had no issues. They’ve been very professional,” Rear Admiral Marc Dalton, commander of the strike group  assigned to the ‘Reagan’, as well as the larger battle forces of the US Seventh Fleet, told Reuters.

“We see them on a regular basis,” he added.

The US regularly stages drills with its regional allies – South Korea and Japan – to demonstrate its strength to North Korea. The war games fuel fears in Pyongyang that they could be used as cover for an invasion.

The drills only provoke North Korea’s leadership into taking a confrontational stance, a senior Russian diplomat said earlier this week.

“The massive maneuvers staged near the coast of North Korea are apparently meant to taunt the North Korean leader [Kim Jong-un], to provoke him into some sloppy action,” Mikhail Ulyanov, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s non-proliferation and arms controls department, said on Tuesday as cited by Interfax.

A federal appeals court has ruled that members of the US Navy can now, in a US court, pursue their lawsuit which alleges that they were exposed to radiation while providing aid after the nuclear crisis in Fukushima, Japan.

On Thursday, the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled in favor of the sailors who were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation while providing humanitarian aid after an earthquake destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.

The ruling allows sailors, who were aboard the ship at the time, to pursue their lawsuit against the state-owned Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) for misrepresented radiation levels in the surrounding air and water. The lawsuit alleges that TEPCO misled them about the extent of the radiation leak.

An investigation into the incident found that TEPCO did not take proper precautions to prevent the incident and described the meltdown as a “manmade” disaster. TEPCO later admitted the meltdown could have been avoided.

The Japanese government set up the Nuclear Damage Claim Dispute Resolution Center to deal with all the claims against TEPCO. So far, a total of $ 58 billion has been paid out to victims of the disaster.

However, TEPCO asked the courts to dismiss the case from the US sailors under the “firefighter’s rule,” which states that first responders cannot sue those who caused the emergency.

Up to 75,000 US citizens could have been affected by the meltdown, according to former Democratic senator and presidential candidate John Edwards who is presenting the case in court.

“These members of the United States Navy deserve their day in court, and they will get it,”said Edwards. “These American heroes served the United States and were innocent victims in a nuclear disaster that never should have happened. This case has broad US interests, both because of our nation’s long-standing relationship with Japan, and because plaintiffs in this case are members of the US military harmed while on a humanitarian mission.”

The sailors continue to suffer from blindness, thyroid cancer, leukemia and brain tumors, Edwards said.

Attorneys are seeking $ 1 billion in damages from TEPCO and several other defendants, including General Electric, EBASCO, Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi.
