“Ziva David is freakin’ alive?!”

That is the understandable reaction of but one NCIS agent in the thrilling, action-packed trailer for Season 17 of TV’s most watched drama (premiering Tuesday, Sept. 24 on CBS).

In the minute-plus video above, we get a snippet more of the season-ending conversation between Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and the suddenly resurfaced Ziva (Cote de Pablo) before the bullets start a-flying. It turns out that someone named Sahar (played by The Exorcist‘s Mouzam Makkar) wants Ziva dead (again!), and now she’s after Gibbs as well.

The rest of the promo toggles between Ziva and Gibbs on the run and engaging in acts of derring-do — yes, we get a new Ziva kick! — and the collectively dropped jaws of those back at NCIS, from those who never met Ziva to those who worked alongside her for years.

“There’s so much value in not keeping her a secret, that we just couldn’t do that,” co-showrunner Steve Binder told TVLine of McGee, Jimmy et al learning their dead colleague is back on the grid. “She’ll have to have reunions of some kind.”

As reported earlier this week, NCIS vet de Pablo is back for the season premiere and then at least two additional episodes later on in the season.

Ratings: BH90210 Opens Strong Amid ‘Loved It!’/’What Was That?’ Reactions https://briefnews.eu/ratings-bh90210-opens-strong-amid-loved-it-what-was-that-reactions/ https://briefnews.eu/ratings-bh90210-opens-strong-amid-loved-it-what-was-that-reactions/#respond Thu, 08 Aug 2019 16:09:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ratings-bh90210-opens-strong-amid-loved-it-what-was-that-reactions/

Fox’s BH90210 showed a good amount of zip with its premiere numbers.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 not-a-reboot “reboot” debuted on Wednesday to 3.8 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating (per fast nationals), dominating the night in the latter measure.

That marks Fox’s best Wednesday numbers of the summer by far, easily besting the 3.14 mil/0.8 posted by MasterChef‘s season opener. And among all of broadcast-TV’s summertime fare, at first glance it appears that only episodes of reality staples America’s Got Talent and The Bachelorette have performed better.

BH90210 marks this summer’s No. 1-rated series launch, and also gave Fox its highest rated out-of-season telecast in nearly three years (since an early September 2016 episode of MasterChef).

TVLine readers gave BH90210 an average grade of “B-,” with online sentiment largely falling into either “God so help me, I loved that odd bird” or “WTF was that?!” buckets.

Opening Fox’s night, MasterChef (3.4 mil/0.9) hit and tied season highs.

Elsewhere:

ABC | The Press Your Luck finale (3.6 mil/0.6), Card Sharks (2.9  mil/0.5) and Match Game (2.9 mil/0.5) each added a few eyeballs while steady in the demo.

CBS | The already renewed Love Island‘s Season 1 finale (2.6 mil/0.5) and Big Brother (3.9 mil/1.1) were both steady week-to-week.

NBC | The InBetween (2.6 mil/0.4) was steady in the demo while eyeing its best audience since June 19.

THE CW | Bulletproof debuted to 803,000 total viewers and a 0.2 rating, while Hypnotize Me cluck-cluck-cluck…. Sorry, I don’t know what happened there. It opened with 564K and a 0.1.

CBS Trailers: Our Knee-Jerk Reactions to The Good Wife EPs’ Evil, All Rise, The Unicorn and More New Shows https://briefnews.eu/cbs-trailers-our-knee-jerk-reactions-to-the-good-wife-eps-evil-all-rise-the-unicorn-and-more-new-shows/ https://briefnews.eu/cbs-trailers-our-knee-jerk-reactions-to-the-good-wife-eps-evil-all-rise-the-unicorn-and-more-new-shows/#respond Thu, 16 May 2019 00:15:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cbs-trailers-our-knee-jerk-reactions-to-the-good-wife-eps-evil-all-rise-the-unicorn-and-more-new-shows/ CBS has unveiled its fall 2019 schedule, along with previews for its upcoming series, including The Good Wife creators’ supernatural drama Evil, Walton Goggins’ heartwarming comedy The Unicorn and the legal series All Rise.

Here at TVLine, we immediately jumped at the chance to screen the trailers — which are available here — and we’re ready to tell you exactly what we think about each of them.

Below, Michael Ausiello, Matt Mitovich, Kimberly Roots, Andy Swift, Dave Nemetz, Vlada Gelman, Ryan Schwartz and Rebecca Iannucci share their gut reactions to the new series based on the first footage released by the network. Then we ask you to watch the new spots and tell us whether you agree or disagree with our quick-take reviews.

Keep in mind: The trailers we’ve seen are just a first glimpse and often are not wholly indicative of the series as a whole. As such, don’t take the following analysis to mean the series below will necessarily be good or bad. Previews can be deceiving — and we’ve all been fooled before.

Keep scrolling to see how Team TVLine reacted to each preview…

All Rise - CBSALL RISE (Mondays at 9/8c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | The Good Wife and The Good Fight have set a VERY high bar for CBS legal dramas. I have no further comment.
MITOVICH | This is what Simone Missick deserves.
SWIFT | Wait, is Shondaland making shows for CBS now?
NEMETZ | I forgot about this utterly average legal drama before the trailer even ended.
SCHWARTZ |This looks much quirkier than your average CBS procedural. That should work in its favor behind a pair of broad comedies.
IANNUCCI | I think I was supposed to be moved by this trailer — but I felt nothing. Also, not enough Wilson Bethel.

Bob Hearts Abishola - CBSBOB HEARTS ABISHOLA (Mondays at 8:30/7:30c; watch trailer)
MITOVICH | I wanted to like this. But didn’t realize Bob would be so stalker-y.
ROOTS | Folake Olowofoyeku is the best part of this trailer. I look forward to her getting her own show which, unlike this, I’ll probably watch.
SWIFT | It’s a fun spin on the traditional romantic comedy, I guess, but does Molly know about this?
NEMETZ | Seems to confuse stalking with romance, which is… troubling. It’s gonna take a lot of work to convince me that Abishola hearts Bob back.
GELMAN | It didn’t make me laugh, but it also didn’t make me cringe.
IANNUCCI | If the penis jokes weren’t off-putting enough (and they were!), Bob’s relentless pursuit of Abishola is just creepy enough to make this a skip.

Carol's Second Act - CBSCAROL’S SECOND ACT (Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c; watch trailer)
MITOVICH | The Rookie meets Scrubs? That was a FUNNY trailer.
ROOTS | So this is literally The Rookie, M.D.? Pass.
SWIFT | I laughed at this trailer a lot more than I expected. I probably won’t watch week-to-week, so can someone let me know when Carol finally bones the guy from Baby Daddy?
NEMETZ |Kyle MacLachlan has gray hair now! (That’s about all I took away from this, aside from all the hokey old-lady jokes.)
GELMAN | So. Many. Old. Person. Jokes.
IANNUCCI |Did you guys know Carol is a little older than her fellow interns? The trailer didn’t quite make that clear.

Evil - CBSEVIL (Thursdays at 10/9c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | Current frontrunner for my most anticipated new fall series.
MITOVICH | This got far and away the biggest reaction from the Carnegie Hall audience at the network’s Upfront. I’m curious to see how dark it gets/stays.
ROOTS | The X-Files plus The Exorcist, courtesy of the Kings? It’s like I nightmared it into being!
NEMETZ | Intriguingly creepy and complex. Doesn’t feel like a CBS show… in a good way!
GELMAN |Anyone else remember ABC’s short-lived Miracles? It got cancelled too soon so I’m glad Robert and Michelle King seem to have unintentionally rebooted it.
SCHWARTZ |Will be curious to see if the same audience that rejected the Kings’ Braindead will embrace this horror-tinged procedural. The trailer piqued my interest, and this is not the kind of show I typically watch.
IANNUCCI | The straight-up scary stuff came off a little hokey; the demon in the bedroom actually made me laugh, which is probably not a good sign. But it looks well-acted and suspenseful enough that I’ll give it time to work out the kinks.

The Unicorn - CBSTHE UNICORN (Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c; watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | You had me at Walton Goggins and Michaela Watkins. You lost me at “Natalie.” You had me back at Walton Goggins and Michaela Watkins. (But, seriously, “Natalie” is gonna be a problem for me.)
MITOVICH | Wow, this looks strong. But what a weird pairing with Young Sheldon.
ROOTS | Solid cast, cute dog. But I cover This Is Us and A Million Little Things: I’ve got no tears left. As long as Unicorn stays light, I’m in.
NEMETZ | The cast is pretty great, but I wish it had more laughs and fewer touchy-feely moments.
GELMAN | Anybody else think it feels like an ABC show?
SCHWARTZ | This has been my favorite trailer out of Upfronts Week — by a mile. I’m most excited to see Michaela Watkins back on television after a fantastic run on the criminally underrated Casual.
IANNUCCI | Walton Goggins + Michaela Watkins + a nice mix of heart and humor = GIMME.

MIDSEASON

Broke - CBSBROKE (watch trailer)
AUSIELLO | A cast this strong and a premise this amusing should’ve yielded a funnier trailer. Also: This was the only new show preview not shown at the upfront presentation, which is highly suspect.
ROOTS | Lemme get this straight: Single dads are highly coveted unicorns but single moms are messes who are just scraping by? Cool, cool.
NEMETZ | I love Jaime Camil with a fiery passion, and would love to watch him on a sitcom… just not this one.
GELMAN | It’s a lot broader comedically than I would like, but I will always root for Jaime Camil.
SCHWARTZ | I adore Jaime Camil, but it says a lot that he’s giving the least broad performance here.
IANNUCCI | Now, if this were a buddy comedy focused only on Javier and Luis? Then I’d be interested.

FBI Most Wanted - CBSFBI: MOST WANTED (watch trailer)
SWIFT | OH MY GOD, WHY IS HIS LAST NAME LA CROIX?!
NEMETZ | If you watch FBI, you might like this! (I don’t, so I dunno.)
SCHWARTZ | I can’t wait to not watch this for the next 10-12 seasons.

TOMMY (watch trailer)
Tommy - CBSMITOVICH | Why do I have a feeling this chief of police will be atypically and unbelievably involved in working cases on the streets?
ROOTS | Love Edie Falco. Love a good Beauty and the Beast reference. But good lord, another cop show?
SWIFT | Edie Falco hasn’t disappointed us yet, so I have faith in this show (even if it’s not really my thing).
NEMETZ | I’ll give anything with Edie Falco a shot, but the rest of the show doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.
GELMAN | Not for me.
IANNUCCI | Not quite my thing, but CBS does this kind of drama so well. I suspect it will run 10 years.

Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse FIRST REACTIONS – ‘Best Spider-Man movie EVER’ https://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-first-reactions-best-spider-man-movie-ever/ https://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-first-reactions-best-spider-man-movie-ever/#respond Wed, 28 Nov 2018 13:47:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-first-reactions-best-spider-man-movie-ever/

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may currently be incapacitated after the events of ‘s Avengers Infinity War, but at least the Web Slinger is getting a different outing from Sony Pictures Animation. The zany new comic book movie from the creators of The LEGO movie centres on Miles Morales, another incarnation of Spidey aside from Peter Parker. However, sees a number of his alternate versions from different comic books collide for some multiverse mayhem. Aside from Miles and Peter Parker, there’s Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir (voiced by Nicholas Cage), Peni Parker and SP//dr and the bizarre Spider-Ham. The first reactions of Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse are in and boy are they overwhelming with praise. Not only is the film called one of the best films of 2018, but the best Spider-Man movie and one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. Check out some of the first reactions below.

Screen Rant
Boy does it live up to the hype. It’s got heart, humour & seriously mind-blowing animation – but it’s all in service of Miles’ story. Easily one of the best superhero movies EVER.

Slash Film
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is not only the best animated feature and best comic book movie this year but one of the best movies of 2018 period. I don’t think another movie does a better job of bringing a comic book to life on the big screen.

Den of Geek
I’m 1300 words into my Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse review (coming tomorrow morning!). I’m not done, and I’m not even close to exhausting ways to praise it. It’s extraordinary.

Collider
Dude, Into The Spider-Verse, is so absurdly incredible there are not enough exclamation points on this Earth. A comic book theme park ride on several hallucinogenics. John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham 4 life.

Fandango
Not only is Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse a great Spider-Man movie, but I think it’s the BEST Spider-Man movie. A super inventive & visually stunning action-adventure about a kid learning to be a hero from a man who forgot how to be one. It is outstanding!

Screen Crush
Into the Spider-Verse somehow expands the character’s mythos and distils his spirit down to its essence all at once. I can’t wait to see it 20 more times.

Mashable
[It] feels like a comic book come to life in the best way – the gorgeous art, the seemingly limitless sense of possibility. Miles is aces and I’m super here for sad-sack Peter.

Observer

So, yeah, Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is a bonafide crowd-pleaser. Whatever the tracking numbers are for its box office opening, they’re too low. P.S. My theatre erupted into cheers multiple times, most notably during Stan Lee’s cameo

Nerd Reactor

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse is hilarious, emotional and just so damn entertaining. Who knew that in a year when both Disney and Pixar release quality films that Spider-Verse would top them to become the best animated film of the year. It’s that good.

Entertainment Insider

Spider-Verse is the best Spider-Man movie since Spider-Man 2. I loved every second of it. Comic fans will geek out at all of the references, but it’s also just a perfect movie for parents and kids (both were cheering in the theatre).

Screen Junkies

I LOVED Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse! My favourite animated film of the year and one of my favourite movies of 2018, period. What a fun, beautiful ride it is.

iO9

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is so incredibly good I’m uncomfortable using the kind of hyperbolic adjectives and comparisons I’m considering as I immediately exit the theatre. But yeah, it’s AMAZING.

Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse will be released in UK cinemas on December 12, 2018.

Venom branded a ‘complete FAILURE’ in savage first reactions – but it’s not all bad https://briefnews.eu/venom-branded-a-complete-failure-in-savage-first-reactions-but-its-not-all-bad/ https://briefnews.eu/venom-branded-a-complete-failure-in-savage-first-reactions-but-its-not-all-bad/#respond Tue, 02 Oct 2018 11:39:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/venom-branded-a-complete-failure-in-savage-first-reactions-but-its-not-all-bad/

The Tom Hardy movie is in cinemas tomorrow, October 3, with reviews not due to be published until just hours before the first public screening.

That seemed to make some fans suspicious that bosses were fearing negative feedback – and it seems they may have been right.

Critics who have seen the movie have been able to unleash their opinions via Twitter and it’s not looking good.

IGN’s Tom Horrorgensen said: “Sorry to say that #Venom is pretty much a complete failure – a tonal mess that feels 15 years old, ignoring the storytelling strides that the superhero genre has made in recent years.

“A few fun Venom-centric moments aside, it has nearly nothing to offer. Don’t get your hopes up.”

Asked about the CGI by a follower, he branded it “awful”.

Mike Ryan of Uproxx said: “I’m *fascinated* with VENOM. The cast seems to all know they’re in a darker superhero movie, except Tom Hardy who is basically remaking Jim Carrey’s Liar Liar.

“I kinda loved watching this movie, in a Rocky Horror type of way. At one point Tom Hardy and Venom make out.”

Perri Nemiroff of Collider commented: “Significant chunks of #Venom don’t work *at all* but there is some serious charm to the Eddie/Venom relationship.

“Not sure I had the intended reactions to some scenes but fun is fun – even when it’s totally ridiculous, right? It’s too bad they didn’t go for the R rating though.”

Scott Mendelson of Forbes posted: “Tom Hardy’s performance in #Venom is either Johnny Depp in the first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or Chris Klein in STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI. Either way, it’s not boring.”

And Brandon Davis said: “Action-sequences and Eddie and Venom’s odd relationship are the highlights of #Venom but if Sony wants to move forward with a universe, it needs to just keep the few parts that work and scrap the large portion which doesn’t.”

It’s not all bad though – Beatrice Verhoeven of The Wrap said: “#Venom wasn’t as bad as everyone was saying it was going to be.

“Tom Hardy is and always will be a great actor, and I laughed a lot — but I’m not sure whether that was intentional or not. Post-credit scene is [fire].”

Hardy himself revealed in an interview over the weekend that 40 minutes’ worth of his favourite scenes have been cut.

Venom is out tomorrow.

Aquaman screening FIRST reactions: Fans are 'worried' PLUS Release date changes https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-screening-first-reactions-fans-are-worried-plus-release-date-changes/ https://briefnews.eu/aquaman-screening-first-reactions-fans-are-worried-plus-release-date-changes/#respond Mon, 27 Aug 2018 01:48:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aquaman-screening-first-reactions-fans-are-worried-plus-release-date-changes/

There is a lot riding on Aquaman’s broad shoulders.

The Justice League movie was not the overwhelming smash DC and Warner Bro were hoping for, and there is still enormous uncertainty over the standalone Batman movie.

After seismic changes at the top of DCEU, Aquamn is teh first movie of a second phase which is hoped will rebrand and relaunch the belaguered franchise.

Reports of a test screening in the San Fernando Valley have been spreading onlne and the first reactions are very mixed with some comparisons to one of the least popular and worst-regarded Marvel movies.

Steven Weintraub at Collider tweeted: “Guess which upcoming superhero movie test screened last night in the San Fernando Valley? Heard good things….”

Christopher Marc at Omega Underground reported: “I hear it’s good (not great) and that’s all we can hope for in the end. I’ll take it… I heard it compared to THE DARK WORLD, actually.”

KC Walsh reported: “Aquaman is a phase 1 MCU film through and through, so if you liked those you’ll love it, if you didn’t you probably won’t get much enjoyment out of Aquaman.”

Asked if the screening had shown a rough or truncated version he added: “Yes, it was mostly complete.”

Fans are taking encouragement from comparisons to Marvel Phase 1.

The first round of Marvel movies were all soild genesis stories with a pleasing freshness to them, where are the first DC movies have generally been criticised for over-complicating the storylines, trying to bring in too many wider plotlines and focussing heavily on darker themes.

Aquaman director James Wan’s recently told Entertainment Weekly: “I wanted to keep the story to the world of Aquaman and not have to worry about what other characters are doing in their films and how that would affect us. I just thought the simplest way was to keep it clean — keep it simple and let it be an Aquaman story.”

The bright and colourful content of the first Aquaman trailer had many thinking of the first Thor movie. However, Thor: The Dark World is generally regarded as one of the worst movies in the entire Marvel Cineamtic Universe, so any comparisons to this has fans worried.

Fan anticipation for the Aquaman movie has been overwhelmingly positive, buoyed by the excellent reception for the trailer (if not so much for teh much-derided first poster).

Comments also point out that early word on the first Wonder Woman screenings was negative.

With so much riding on the movie, Warner Bros has also been tweaking the international release dates.

This Christmas is unusually clear of any major Marvel or Star Wars blockbusters and Aquaman was originally scheduled for a December 21 US and UK release.

WB already shifted the UK date to December 14 and has just announced a similar move for Australia. US fans are hoping the same will soon apply to their December 21 slot.

It would certainly make sense for WB to move Aquaman away from the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee which will currently be competing for the exactly the same audience share on that same date.

James Wan’s Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.

AI plus a chemistry robot finds all the reactions that will work https://briefnews.eu/ai-plus-a-chemistry-robot-finds-all-the-reactions-that-will-work/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-plus-a-chemistry-robot-finds-all-the-reactions-that-will-work/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 00:31:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-plus-a-chemistry-robot-finds-all-the-reactions-that-will-work/

Simple robots have been part of chemistry for years. (credit: Greg Russ)

Chemistry is a sort of applied physics, with the behavior of electrons and their orbitals dictating a set of rules for which reactions can take place and what products will remain stable. At a very rough level, the basics of these rules are simple enough that experienced chemists can keep them all in their brain and intuit how to fit together pieces in a way that ultimately produces the starting material they want. Unfortunately, there are some parts of the chemical landscape that we don’t have much experience with, and strange things sometimes happen when intuition meets a reaction flask. This is why some critical drugs still have to be purified from biological sources.

It’s possible to get more precise than intuition, but that generally requires full quantum-level simulations run on a cluster, and even these don’t always capture some of the quirks that come about because of things like choice of solvents and reaction temperatures or the presence of minor contaminants.

But improvements in AI have led to a number of impressive demonstrations of its use in chemistry. And it’s easy to see why this works; AIs can figure out their own rules, without the same constraints traditionally imparted by a chemistry education. Now, a team at Glasgow University has paired a machine-learning system with a robot that can run and analyze its own chemical reaction. The result is a system that can figure out every reaction that’s possible from a given set of starting materials.
