This Tuesday night, as the results of the New Hampshire primary for this year’s presidential election trickle in, The Conners will react to the news in real-time, in live episodes taped and broadcast for each coast.

In “Live from Lanford” (airing Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC), Mark for a school report will be watching the results of the New Hampshire primary with Harris, who is apathetic to the electoral process and believes money’s influence in politics means real change is impossible. The rest of the Conners will in turn share their differing takes on why they think everyone should vote, offering the working-class perspective that you may have to vote for a candidate you don’t love but one that will “screw you the least.”

(All of this happens against the backdrop of romance when Louise, played by guest star Katey Sagal, gets an opportunity that might send her away from Lanford, prompting the family to interfere in Dan’s complicated relationship with her by throwing his lady friend a surprise going-away party.)

The idea for not just a live episode but one that reacted, in real time, to ABC News coverage on the Conners’ TV screen, came from series creator Bruce Helford. “So whatever happens, you can blame me!” he told TVLine with a laugh last month at the TCA press tour.

Explaining the decision to add a breaking news twist to the live twist, he said, “I always felt like if you just do a show live, so what? Everybody’s waiting for someone to make a mistake, that’s all it is. We did live on The Drew Carey Show (which Helford also created), but we added an improv element so that things were happening that could go any way and be interesting. And with The Conners, no matter what we do, we’re a little bit supercharged when it comes to politics. Also, they’re working class families and they’re most affected by what’s going on in this country. They’re really getting hit.”

So, as characters stream in and out of the living room where Mark and Harris are watching the primary returns get reported, “They’re going to comment on it, and we’ll see what happens.”

In fact, they will see what happens two times, since the live episode will tape a second time for the West Coast, and thus find the characters responding to different news coverage than they did the first go-round.

“The first time we do it [for the East Coast], it will be early returns. And then later on, it will be more about the results,” Helford noted. “It’s nice, because it gives us a chance to say something meaningful about the process, and say it in a unique, Conners way.”

Today on Wednesday addressed detailed allegations leveled against disgraced former co-anchor Matt Lauer, who now stands accused of rape.

Lauer, who was famously and abruptly fired by NBC in November 2017 following claims of inappropriate sexual behavior, is now alleged to have anally raped former NBC News staffer Brooke Nevils when they were both in Sochi covering the 2014 Winter Olympics. According to Ronan Farrow’s new book Catch and Kill, Nevils eventually took her allegations to human resources, but they were characterized as being neither “criminal” nor “assault.” Soon after, her “work life became torture.” She eventually took medical leave and a payment in the “seven figures.”

“I feel like we owe it to our viewers to pause for a moment,” Savannah Guthrie said during this morning’s Today broadcast. “This is shocking and appalling, and I honestly don’t even know what to say about it. I want to say that I know it wasn’t easy for our colleague Brooke to come forward then, it’s not easy now, and we support her and any women who have come forward with claims… It’s just very painful for all of us at NBC and who are at the Today show, and, you know, it’s very, very, very difficult.”

Co-anchor Hoda Kotb then turned to Guthrie and added, “I’m looking at you and I’m having a weird moment… We were sitting here just like this two years ago, and truth be told, Savannah and I did a little prayer upstairs just before, just to sort out what we were going to do, and I think it’s— it’s like you feel like you’ve known someone for 12 years — and I don’t know if you guys have ever felt like that — you know someone, you feel like you know them inside and out and then all of a sudden, like, a door opens up and it’s a part of them you didn’t know.

“We don’t know all the facts in all of this, but they’re not allegations of an affair, they’re allegations of a crime, and I think that’s shocking to all of us here who have sat with Matt for many, many years,” Kotb continued. “I think we’re going to continue to process this part of this horrific story. And as you said, our thoughts are with Brooke. It’s not easy what she did to come forward. It’s not easy at all.”

In closing, Guthrie said, “We’re disturbed to our core… We have a commitment to keep you informed, and we will continue to do that.”

After Barry threw his and Iris’ daughter into the Pipeline — and after lambasting Sherloque for concealing his suspicions about Nora since Day 1 — the team decided to dive into her backstory via her journal. As they did so, we saw Nora’s past (circa 2049) play out.

Flash 5x18 SpoilersShe started off as just a quirky CSI, always late to a crime scene and famously obsessed with the long-unsolved case of Flash foe Cicada. As Nora and CSI pal/bestie Leah get to investigating a string of robberies, they deduce that a speedster — the first one the city has seen since the crisis that disappeared The Flash — is at play. In the course of tracking the resists, they run afoul of said speedster (whom they dub Godspeed), and Nora gets zapped by him. Upon coming to and accidentally triggering her powers, Nora caroms around city and crashes into a laundry truck, Barry Allen-style. Realizing her potential, Nora is determined to catch Godpseed, but decides she must think like an evil speedster to do so. Ergo her first visit to Eobard Thawne, to pick his brain. Thawne immediately picks up on clues that his visitor is a speedster, but their time runs out before he can offer any assistance.

Leah shares with Nora that a bit of metal found buried in her shoulder by the doctors is not shrapnel, as suspected, but an inhibitor chip. Meaning, Nora didn’t “get” her powers from Godspeed, she always had them. And only her mother could have been behind squelching them. Chasing a lead on Godspeed’s next heist, Nora and Leah again run up against the sinister speedster, who winds up killing the latter as Nora helplessly watches.

Cutting back to the present day, we see Team Flash react to reading about this tragic turn. Iris for one regrets anew her actions of the future, and decides that the least she can do here and now is give Nora a second chance. So she springs her kid from the Pipeline with a firm, “Don’t make me regret this.”

Before Team Flash, Nora continues her story, and we flashback to a chilly moment between mom and daughter when Future Iris returns from working a story in Coast City. “You lied to me my whole life,” Nora roars. Iris explains that she took the drastic measure to protect Nora — “from this city, from metahumans, from yourself.” Iris has lost so much already, she couldn’t lose her daughter as well. But “you just did,” Nora says before zipping away.

Nora works with her boss to ID Godspeed as August Heart, after which Nora realizes that his lightning turns blue, just like Zoom’s — ergo, he must be using Velocity 9, and his goal is to craft a permanent batch of the stuff. Nora pays another visit to Thawne, asking his help to stop a speedster. And though he at first rebuffs the invitation, he eventually nods yes.

Using his cell’s one-way phone, Eobard coaches Nora as she baits Godspeed and leads him up the side of the Central City Citizen Media building and across its rooftop. As Godspeed passes the satellite dishes, he gets whammied by microwave pulses and KO’d. After that big win, Nora beseeches Thawne to train her, but he notes “my time on this Earth us coming to an end, nodding to a countdown clock showing 1:13:31. Thawne then taunts Nora by asking, “How much do you really know about The Flash?” He guides her to the STAR Labs time vault, where Gideon greets Barry and Iris’ daughter and drops a major spoiler: your dad was The Flash! Gideon cues up a video Barry recorded for his daughter while, apparently, dealing with the crisis. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to help you learn how to use her powers,” he said. “remember, my sweet Nora, I love you.”

Cutting back to the present day, Nora affirms, “I just wanted to see you, Dad,” and maybe crack the unsolved Cicada case along the way. Thawne showed her how to do that. Barry, though, can’t help but note that Nora returned to Thawne multiple times after the Enlightenment and, worse, after learning about Reverse-Flash’s reign of terror. “I don’t trust you, Nora. And I can’t have anybody here with us I don’t trust…. It’s time for you to go home.”

And on that note, Barry whisks Nora back to 2049 and strongly advises her not to attempt to run back.

Before heading back himself, Barry confronts Thawne. “One wasn’t enough? You had to try to take my daughter from me, too?” Barry then gloats, “You always thought you were so much smarter, but you lost. And now you’ll get what you deserve.” Thawne, though, doesn’t seem terribly bruised by Barry’s words, as his countdown clock hits 0:10:00….

The football world has been united in its condemnation of monkey chants from Inter Milan fans towards Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, with prominent figures including Mo Salah insisting racism has “no place” in the game.

Koulibaly, who is currently one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, was targeted by Inter Milan fans with the chants during a Serie A game at San Siro on Wednesday, suffering abuse from the home support throughout the match. The chants intensified when the 27-year-old was sent off with ten minutes to go in the match for sarcastically clapping the referee.

Inter, who won the game 1-0 by virtue of a 91st-minute goal from Lautaro Martinez, were then slapped with a two-game stadium ban which forced them to hold their next couple of home games behind closed doors, with a third game having ‘curva’ section, which houses Inter Milan’s ‘ultra’ fans.

In a surprise twist, Senegal international Koulibaly will also face a two-game suspension for his sending off, which raised eyebrows about the Italian league’s punishment system and overall attitude in dealing with racism towards its players.

A host of prominent football figures spoke out on the incident, including Liverpool’s ‘Egyptian King’ Mo Salah, who tweeted: “There’s no place for racism in football. There’s no place for racism anywhere at all.”

He was joined by Koulibaly teammate Dries Marten, who posted a heartwarming picture fo the two sharing an embrace, with the caption: “You’re one of the most beautiful people I know, please never change. Don’t react to this b*llshit. Let’s stand together!” 

A host of other famous names and faces also showed their support, including Juventus’ 5-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who posted to Instagram: “In the world and in football I always want education and respect. No to racism and any offense and discrimination!!!”

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund were one of the club sides keen to show their support to the player, and drew attention to their ‘Borussia Unites’ anti-racism campaign. However, some football fans were criticized about their choice of protest, as a supporter was snapped holding an anti-racist banner in blackface. 

Koulibaly’s manager Carlo Ancelotti was praised by anti-racism groups for his comments made after the game in which he expressed his desire for the game to be suspended given the chants: “We asked three times for the match to be suspended and there were three announcements, but the match continued,” he told Sky.

“The player was irritable, he wasn’t in the best state of mind. Usually he’s a very calm and professional player but there were these noises throughout the game.

“It looks like an excuse but the player was agitated and irritable. It’s not good, not for us, nor for Italian football.

“The solution exists. You have to stop the match. You just have to know when, after how many announcements. And if we don’t know, then next time we may have to stop play ourselves.”

Former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and the former first lady Michelle Obama are among the Washington heavyweights who reacted to the 41st president’s death and offered remembrances of his duty and public service.

As news of Bush’s death spread across the world, international leaders in and outside of politics, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama, and Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook also spoke fondly of Bush’s time as a leader.

“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear dad has died,” the statement from H.W. Bush’s son and fellow former president read. “George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.”

Stan Lee, who cofounded Marvel with his sidekick Jack Kirby and remained the comic company’s figurehead for decades as it turned into the world’s biggest movie franchise, died Monday at the age of 95.

News of his death triggered an outpouring of mourning from around Hollywood.

After Serena Williams complained about the frequency of anti-doping tests, comments have flooded social media with some internet users even suggesting that doping officers are trying to steal the prominent US tennis player’s DNA.

On Tuesday, the 23-time Grand Slam winner published an emotional post on Twitter criticising the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for subjecting her to constant doping tests which she has regularly faced since returning from maternity leave.

“Discrimination? I think so,” the US tennis star wrote, before adding: “At least I’ll be keeping the sport clean.”

One of the follower meanwhile explained the frequent tests by an attempt to create “a future nation of tennis pros.”

“Maybe in secret they’re stealing your dna for a future nation of tennis pros?” a user nicknamed Tenzin commented on Williams’ Twitter post.

“I literally thought of that!!!” the tennis star replied.

“It’s because she worn [sic] a grand slam while pregnant and made it to a grand slam final 10 months after having a difficult delivery. No one else has done that so they think she’s on something,” another user wrote sharing the view that the legendary player is the victim of discrimination.

Some people who left comments on William’s Twitter page claimed she exaggerated the story, insisting that all the world leading athletes should be tested more frequently than their less decorated counterparts.

“Roger Federer gets drug tested more than anybody and you don’t hear him complaining,” another user wrote.

“I heard Lance Armstrong say the exact same thing 100s of times,” another follower commented referring to one of the biggest doping rows in sports history which saw the multiple Tour de France winner Armstrong being stripped of all his titles after his doping violations had surfaced.
