“Saturday Night Live’s” cold open portrayed Republican lawmakers holding a raucous victory party celebrating Judge Brett Kavanaugh‘s confirmation to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh was sworn in earlier on Saturday following congressional hearings where Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her when the two were in high school and a week-long FBI investigation.

“Don, I’m here in the GOP locker room where the mood is nothing short of euphoric,” said Heidi Gardner, playing CNN’s Dana Bash, surrounded by Republican senators dancing and exchanging back slaps.

Russia v Spain: Raucous home support seek Euro 2008 semi-final revenge at Luzhniki https://briefnews.eu/russia-v-spain-raucous-home-support-seek-euro-2008-semi-final-revenge-at-luzhniki/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-v-spain-raucous-home-support-seek-euro-2008-semi-final-revenge-at-luzhniki/#respond Sun, 01 Jul 2018 12:25:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-v-spain-raucous-home-support-seek-euro-2008-semi-final-revenge-at-luzhniki/

World Cup hosts Russia gear up to meet Spain in Moscow on Sunday with their raucous home support at the magnificent Luzhniki Stadium focused on revenge for defeat in the Euro 2008 semi-final.

Spain defeated Russia 3-0 in that match, eventually going on to win the tournament in Switzerland, beginning one of the most famous football dynasties that preceded a World Cup 2010 win and another European crown in 2012.

The Euro 2008 semi-final is the furthest Russia have ever advanced in a major tournament, and while the showing was treated as a huge success, the defeat to Spain nevertheless gives added impetus on Sunday for Russia to avenge the loss on home soil.

If Russia have any chance of doing that, they must call on each and every supporter in the magnificent Luzhniki Stadium to become their ‘12th man’ on the field.

The players have already issued an official call to the fans. Midfielder Roman Zobnin, who has played in every minute of Russia’s campaign so far, said: “Dear fans, dear friends, I want to say a big thank you for supporting us in our three games so far, we felt your support.”

“We’re expecting a really tough game against Spain, I know that everyone will go to the stadium, everyone will watch at home on TV.

“We’ll give 100 percent, support us, and we will try to make you happy,” the 24-year-old Spartak Moscow midfielder added.

The importance of the supporters has not gone unnoticed by the Spain players either. Winger Rodrigo admitted the team will not be playing against one team but “thousands of supporters,” and admitted that caution must be applied by his teammates.

“For us the most important thing is to play against Russia right. We will not play against 11 players of Russian national team, but against thousands spectators on the stadium,” he said.

Russia will also have a secret weapon in their ranks with their top scorer Denis Cheryshev. Having only gotten his chance at the tournament by virtue of an injury to Alan Dzagoev in the opening game versus Saudi Arabia, Cheryshev has gone on to net three goals in three games.

The winger plays his club football in Spain with Villarreal, and is a fluent Spanish speaker having spent his childhood in the country due to his father, who played as a professional there.

A graduate of Real Madrid’s football academy, Cheryshev will be desperate to show the Spanish players how football is played in his homeland.

Cheryshev is Russia’s top scorer with three goals in the tournament so far, and Russia are among the tournament top scorers, with eight goals in the group stage. They may fancy their chances against a Spain side that has leaked five goal in two games, and a goalkeeper seriously lacking in confidence in David de Gea.

Another underperforming player in Spain’s squad is captain Sergio Ramos, who played in that game a decade ago. At fault for a couple of goals in qualifying, Russia could seize their chance to heap misery on perhaps the most vilified man in football.

Mexico 1-0 Germany: 'Chucky' goal topples reigning champions at raucous Luzhniki https://briefnews.eu/mexico-1-0-germany-chucky-goal-topples-reigning-champions-at-raucous-luzhniki/ https://briefnews.eu/mexico-1-0-germany-chucky-goal-topples-reigning-champions-at-raucous-luzhniki/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 18:07:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mexico-1-0-germany-chucky-goal-topples-reigning-champions-at-raucous-luzhniki/

A first-half goal from Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano was enough to give Mexico a shock win over reigning world champions Germany at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium and send perhaps the most conspicuous fans at Russia 2018 into raptures.

Germany, World Cup winners four years ago in Brazil, were undone by a 35th-minute strike from the man they call ‘Chucky’, which came as the result of some surprisingly lax defending in the first half.

Lozano showed cute footwork to turn Mesut Ozil inside out after Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, who spearheaded a Mexican break forward and laid the ball off to the PSV man to rifle home the only goal of the game into the bottom left corner.

The Mexican fans who have flooded Moscow for the World Cup and had filled Luzhniki for their nation’s opener were ecstatic.

Die Mannschaft did show some fight despite falling behind; Toni Kroos had his free kick pushed onto the bar from Ochoa at the other end, but the first half featured wave after wave of Mexican attack with Germany struggling to stem the tide.

After the restart, Germany began with more intent, and it was Mexico’s turn to play on the back foot. Their 24 shots on goal throughout the game tell their own story of attacking intent that then tiptoed into blunt desperation.

Mexico’s counter-attacking tactics were largely unchanged int he second half, and the Central Americans did manage to break forward with Miguel Layun twice bearing down on goal, but his effort went high and wide on both occasions.

A lot has already been written about Mexico’s fans in Moscow, and now the national team had given them something to really shout about in the Russian capital.

‘The Death of Stalin’ Trailer: ‘Veep’ Creator Armando Iannucci Delivers Another Raucous Comedy https://briefnews.eu/the-death-of-stalin-trailer-veep-creator-armando-iannucci-delivers-another-raucous-comedy/ https://briefnews.eu/the-death-of-stalin-trailer-veep-creator-armando-iannucci-delivers-another-raucous-comedy/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 22:55:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-death-of-stalin-trailer-veep-creator-armando-iannucci-delivers-another-raucous-comedy/ The Death of Stalin trailer

Anyone who’s seen HBO’s Veep, the 2009 film In The Loop, or the British TV series The Thick of It knows that writer/director Armando Iannucci has a biting and unique take on political comedy. His characters have a way of speaking that could be referred to as melodiously offensive, and it looks like he’s done it again with The Death of Stalin, which is only his second feature film. The movie earned rave reviews earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival, and now a new trailer has arrived to show us his caustic imagining of the fall of one of the world’s most brutal dictatorships.

The Death of Stalin trailer

Can something be a real trailer if it’s only 52 seconds long? Seems like more of a teaser, doesn’t it? Which is slightly strange, since the first trailer has already come out and is much longer…this is practically a TV spot. But in any case, the movie looks like a tremendously funny spin on what happens when Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin dies and the vacuum he leaves behind suddenly turns into a whirlpool of chaos while his minions struggle to retain relevance and power.

Iannucci is a master at poking holes in the details of the political process, and from all accounts he’s done it again with this film, which /Film’s Chris Evangelista said “might be one of the most hilarious films of the 21st century” in his TIFF review. That’s high praise, but having seen some of Iannucci’s earlier work, it’s easy to believe the filmmaker could pull off such an impressive feat.

Meanwhile, Russia is reportedly considering banning the movie entirely because the film “could be part of a western plot to destabilize Russia by causing rifts in society.” So I’m guessing Russian citizens won’t be able to laugh at this any time soon.

Here’s another quote from Chris’s review:

There are an abundance of horrors here – innocent people rounded up and murdered, threats of torture, and more; and while Iannucci finds ways to make these massacres morbidly amusing by the way he shoots them (they’re often taking place in the backgrounds of mundane conversations), the reality slowly begins to set in: this is crazy and it actually happened.

Adrian McLoughlin plays Stalin, and the movie’s ensemble cast includes Rupert Friend, Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Jeffrey Tambor, Paddy Considine, and Michael Palin. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

The internal political landscape of 1950s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in a new film by Emmy award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer/director Armando Iannucci. In the days following Stalin’s collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They’re all just desperately trying to remain alive.

The Death of Stalin arrives in UK cinemas on October 20, 2017, but doesn’t have a US release date scheduled yet.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 musters up memories of ready-built race cars and road-racing glory. Nostalgia is sweet, but the pony-car performance war—now five decades old—is vicious and shows no signs of abating. Chevrolet has armed itself with the 650-hp Camaro ZL1, and Dodge is packing the 707-hp Challenger SRT Hellcat—and the 840-hp Demon drag-strip special. Ford’s response is the raucous Shelby GT350 and GT350R—the latter track-tuned up to 11. Both run a screaming, naturally aspirated flat-plane-crank V-8 (code-named Voodoo) that revs to 8200 rpm and channels its 526 horses through a gratifying six-speed manual gearbox. Despite the power gap to their Chevy and Dodge competitors, the Shelby twins are certified track stars that deliver face-melting grip, heart-stopping brakes, feedback-plentiful steering, and an exhaust note that frightens small children. The GT350 and GT350R deliver high and even higher doses of rock ’n’ roll and race readiness. Both are totally bad-ass. READ MORE ››

The pint-sized Ford Fiesta ST revs up more smiles per minute than a Hoonigan parking-lot party. Its sport-tuned suspension and six-speed-manual-only gearbox can make amateur drivers believe they’ve found a new day job. A 197-hp turbocharged inline-four feeds the front wheels, and a brake-based torque-vectoring system aids agility. Recaro sport seats and blacked-out rims are racy upgrades. Stylewise, this spicy hatchback is the right amount of mild versus wild. Too bad its pedestrian interior suffers from a tight back seat, econocar materials, and few standard features. Most important, though, the little Fiesta ST is seriously fun to drive, plenty practical, and readily affordable. This car feels like happy hour at the hot-hatch performance party. READ MORE ››

‘There was no mix’: Trump bristles at reporter’s suggestion of mixed reaction during raucous Boy Scouts speech https://briefnews.eu/there-was-no-mix-trump-bristles-at-reporters-suggestion-of-mixed-reaction-during-raucous-boy-scouts-speech/ https://briefnews.eu/there-was-no-mix-trump-bristles-at-reporters-suggestion-of-mixed-reaction-during-raucous-boy-scouts-speech/#respond Wed, 02 Aug 2017 05:36:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/there-was-no-mix-trump-bristles-at-reporters-suggestion-of-mixed-reaction-during-raucous-boy-scouts-speech/ Donald TrumpJonathan Ernst/Getty Images

President Donald Trump hit back at a suggestion that a raucous speech last week to a gathering of Boy Scouts received a “mixed” reaction.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the transcript of which was obtained by Politico.

During a back-and-forth with the Journal reporters in the room, Trump asked what they thought of his appearance before the Boy Scouts, which he said was the “biggest crowd they’ve ever had.”

“I thought it was an interesting speech in the context of the Boy Scouts,” one reporter said.

“Right,” Trump replied.

“They seemed to get a lot of feedback from former scouts and —”

Trump then asked if they’d liked it, to which the reporter responded, “It seemed mixed.”

Trump disagreed with that assessment. “They loved it. It wasn’t — there was no mix. That was a standing —”

“You got a good reaction inside the arena, that’s right,” the reporter said.

“From the time I walked out on the stage — because I know,” Trump continued. “And by the way, I’d be the first to admit mixed. I’m a guy that will tell you mixed. There was no mix there. That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix.”

Trump’s speech to the Boy Scouts drew criticism for taking on an increasingly political tilt, as the president took shots at the media, former President Barack Obama, and 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton.

“Boy, you have a lot of people here,” Trump said at the beginning of the rally on July 24. “The press will say it’s about 200 people. It looks like about 45,000 people.”

“I said, ‘Who the hell wants to speak about politics when I’m in front of the Boy Scouts,'” Trump said.

However, he did just that for the duration of the speech.

“You know, I go to Washington and I see all these politicians, and I see the swamp,” he said. “And it’s not a good place. In fact today I said we ought to change it from the word swamp to the word cesspool or, perhaps, to the word sewer. But it’s not good. Not good. And I see what’s going on, and believe me I’d much rather be with you. That I can tell you.”

Trump also criticized Obama, who previously turned down an invitation to speak at the Jamboree in protest of the Boy Scouts’ policy of disallowing gay members and leaders from joining its ranks in 2013.

As he frequently does, Trump went on to revisit the events of Election Day in 2016.

“Do you remember that famous night on television, November 8, where they said, these dishonest people, where they said, ‘There is no path to victory for Donald Trump’?” Trump said while pointing at members of the media. “Do you remember that incredible night with the maps, and the Republicans are red and the Democrats are blue, and that map was so red it was unbelievable, and they didn’t know what to say.”

Trump continued praising his Boy Scouts appearance during the interview with the Journal, saying to the reporters in the room that he received a call “from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them.

“And they were very thankful. So there was — there was no mix,” he said.

Boy Scouts officials pushed back on Trump’s claim, according to TIME, which said the organization was “unaware of any call from national leadership placed to the White House” about Trump’s speech.

The organization pointed to a statement released last week in response to backlash over Trump’s speech: “The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself,” the organization said.

That statement came as the Boy Scouts of America quickly distanced itself from Trump’s political rhetoric.

“The Boy Scouts of America is wholly nonpartisan and does not promote any one position, product, service, political candidate, or philosophy,” the organization said in a statement. “The invitation for the sitting US president to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies.

An official with the organization also apologized for the “political rhetoric” in Trump’s speech.

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree,” said Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh. “That was never our intent.”

Nashville Predators' raucous chant tradition started with just 3 fans https://briefnews.eu/nashville-predators-raucous-chant-tradition-started-with-just-3-fans/ https://briefnews.eu/nashville-predators-raucous-chant-tradition-started-with-just-3-fans/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 22:46:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nashville-predators-raucous-chant-tradition-started-with-just-3-fans/

By now you’ve heard the chant.

Down 0-2 in the series, the Nashville Predators needed a serious boost — and they got it from their fans.

After Nashville went up 2-1 in Game 3 at home, the Predators’ faithful struck up a now infamous taunt directed at Pittsburgh Penguins’ goalie Matt Murray.

And with the chant came a shift in momentum, as Nashville won two straight at home to even up the series 2-2.

But just where did the chant come from?

It all started in section 303 of Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

According to their website, Lee Swartz, Mark Hollingsworth and Kurt Andress, joined by their love for hockey and palpable excitement for a new expansion franchise coming to Nashville, bought seasons tickets in the “cheap seats” so they could bring along friends and family.

“We nearly decided on Section 331, but went with 303 because we could get a better site line on the team benches,” Swartz says on the website.

Somewhat ironically given the matchup of this Stanley Cup final, Swartz also happened to be a passionate Pittsburgh Penguins fan when the team won two Stanley Cups in the early 90s and “experienced first-hand the amazing energy that fans can bring to a team.”

The three men quickly made friends with other season ticket-holders near their seats, and a fan club was born.

Early chants ranged from “Let’s Go Predators” to “Aaaaah, sit down, ya loser!” and even the now infamous “Goalie, you suck!” taunt.

“There’s something quite amazing about hearing 17,000 people yell ‘you suck!’ in perfect unison at an opposing goalie,” Swartz says.

By season two, other season ticket-holders were asking to have their seats moved to section 303.

Almost 20 years later, the chants remain a staple at Predators’ home games

Add that to the catfish toss and Smashville fans are beginning to look like some of the most passionate and raucous in the league.

Just don’t call them bandwagon fans.

Predators rout Penguins in front of raucous fans https://briefnews.eu/predators-rout-penguins-in-front-of-raucous-fans/ https://briefnews.eu/predators-rout-penguins-in-front-of-raucous-fans/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2017 10:05:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/predators-rout-penguins-in-front-of-raucous-fans/

Predators coach Peter Laviolette heard all the questions and criticism of his Pekka Rinne after the goaltender’s struggles in the Stanley Cup Final in Pittsburgh.

Well, Laviolette never thought of switching goalies.

A change of scenery helped Rinne and all his Nashville teammates as they dominated once again on their own ice for the biggest piece of franchise history yet.

A victory in the Stanley Cup Final.

Roman Josi and Frederick Gaudreau scored 42 seconds apart in the second period, and the Predators beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 Saturday night to pull within 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Rinne started and made 27 saves against a Pittsburgh team that continued to struggle on the power play and lacked the same zip they had in winning the first two games at home.

“There was no decision,” Laviolette said of changing goalies. “He was terrific. I said that after Game 2. He’s been the backbone for our team. He’s been excellent. His game tonight was rock solid.”

Welcome to Nashville

The Predators capped the biggest party in Nashville history with a victory that gave thousands of fans inside and outside of the arena reason to celebrate with even country star Keith Urban and wife, actress Nicole Kidman, high-fiving.

That same crowd gave Penguins netminder Matt Murray an earful throughout the game.

Josi also had two assists in the game. James Neal, Craig Smith and Mattias Ekholm rounded out the scoring for Nashville as the Predators worked out some frustration against the Pens.

“Like our team has done the whole playoffs against Chicago, St. Louis, Anaheim, we showed really good composure,” said Nashville defenceman P.K. Subban, who had predicted a win in Game 3. “We’re going to take that into the next game.”

Game 4 is Monday night.

Pens drawing from experience

“I thought we gave them a couple of freebies where we didn’t force them to have to work for it and that’s an area we’ve got to be better moving forward,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’re disappointed we didn’t get the result, but we also understand that this is a series. Our guys, they’ve been through this. They can draw on their experience. We’re not going to let this certainly get us down. We’re going to learn from it, move by it and get ready for the next game.”

Captain Sidney Crosby did not have a shot on goal, and neither did Evgeni Malkin.

“Hopefully a game like this is something that’s a hard lesson,” Crosby said. “But we’ve got to make sure we’re better.”

Jake Guentzel scored his 13th goal this post-season and fourth of this series for Pittsburgh and now is one goal shy of Dino Ciccarelli’s rookie record of 14 in 1981 for Minnesota. Guentzel put the Penguins up 1-0 on their second shot with a wrister off a rebound of Ian Cole that beat Rinne just 2:46 into the game.

Rinne shines

Rinne stopped the next 26 shots for the victory and the party continued into the night.

Early on, Matt Murray extended his scoreless streak to 72:54 with the Pittsburgh goalie looking ready to notch his 21st playoff win. Then he gave up five goals in the span of 15 shots and the catfish watch was on.

The Predators got it started with a three-goal flurry in the second.

Josi scored his sixth goal off a slap shot at 5:51 , tying it at 1-1 and finally giving nervous fans something to enjoy. Then Gaudreau, who scored his first career NHL goal in Game 1, scored 42 seconds later to put Nashville ahead with his wrister from the high slot, taking advantage of a screen by Penguins defenceman Ian Cole to beat Murray glove-side.

Just after that go-ahead goal, the Penguins had a rush on Rinne, and the three-time Vezina Trophy finalist made back-to-back big saves. First, he stopped Phil Kessel’s wrister from the right circle. The rebound bounced back into the slot, and Rinne made a save on Chris Kunitz with an assist from Subban sliding over to help.

Neal made it 3-1 with 22.6 seconds left in the second, banking the puck off Murray’s left arm for his first goal in the series and sixth of the playoffs. Smith’s goal on a breakaway at 4:54 was his first of the playoffs, and Ekholm padded the lead with a power-play goal with 6:50 left.

“We played some good hockey in those first two games, just a couple little breakdowns and they jumped all over us and it was in the back of the net,” Neal said. “It was a good job of limiting that tonight.”

As for Rinne, Neal added: “We felt we left him out to dry a few times in the last game. I thought we did a better job tonight.”
