Spencer Platt / Getty Images Stocks could spin three ways as inflation begins to cool, Charles Schwab analysts said in a note on Monday, outlining a good, a bad, and an ugly outcome for the market. The good: stocks could rally as central banks ease up on rate hikes. The bad: inflation could rebound and set off even more volatility. The ugly: central banks will stay hawkish and send stocks lower. The Fed just issued its third 75-point rate hike this year, and the European Central Bank has also hiked by an unprecedented 75 points, causing stocks to recoil in volatility. If inflation continues its slow descent, markets could rebound on hopes that aggressive rate hikes will end, Schwab said. US inflation cooled slightly to 8.3% in August from 9.1% in July, sparking talk that inflation may have peaked. Some central banks have already indicated they may be nearly done with hiking rates: Brazil's central bank stopped hiking in August, and Norway's central bank suggested its most recent 50-point rate hike could be its last, or close to it, analysts said. "Should inflation begin to recede significantly around year-end due to a softer labor market and easing housing inflation … markets may rebound on prospects for an end to the aggressive rate hikes of 2022," analysts said. They noted though that economic growth could be slowed, as demand will take a time to pick up again, and central bankers are likely to remain cautious for any rebound of inflation. But inflation could come back, if central banks ease too soon, Schwab warned. The global policy rate for developed markets excluding the US is still low historically and remains "deeply negative" — even lower than the rate that preceded the Great Recession in 2008, analysts said. "If central banks respond to a weakening labor market and stop hiking too soon or cut rates while the real policy rate is still firmly negative, there's a chance inflation may rebound. If it does, even higher rates may be needed to quell inflation," the note said. That would be a repeat of the 70s and 80s when central bankers pivoted monetary policy too quickly, leading to a "whipsaw" effect in stocks. "This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned. And then, there's the possibility that central banks will actually do what they say and stay hawkish until inflation is dead. In that scenario, expect another year like 2022, Schwab said. "Stocks would have further to fall with both price-to-earnings (PE) ratios and earnings contributing to declines; any prospect of a deep recession would likely force analysts to cut earnings estimates," analysts warned. https://i.insider.com/5e6288bffee23d31351297db?format=jpeg

Lumber prices fell 6% on Thursday, extending their two-day decline to 10% after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by another 75 basis points.
The aggressive interest rate hikes from the Fed have helped solidify the ongoing surge in mortgage rates, which jumped above 6% for the first time since 2008 earlier this month and have doubled over the past year. On Thursday, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate surged another 27 basis points from last week to 6.29%, according to data from Freddie Mac.
The surge in mortgage rates have taken a significant bite out of home sales, which has in-turn led to price cuts and has dented homebuilder sentiment.
"The lumber market continues to be in a state of overall malaise as buyers anticipate lower overall demand going forward. Many yards are trying to pare their inventories to minimum levels and have really no fear of price upside," Sherwood Lumber's director of risk management Steve Loebner told Insider.
"This has taken all of the urgency of the past two years out of the market. We have had a few supply and transportation scares which caused short term rallies, however these have all been quickly shrugged off. Home prices are resetting to reflect the higher mortgage rates and this is a process which can take some time," Loebner said.
But the housing market hasn't completely fallen apart, and after a more than 70% decline from its record high, lumber prices can still catch a bid going forward.
"There is still a solid backlog of demand on existing single and multi-family [housing] projects… Multi-family demand in particular has been very robust and many traders report near record backlogs of projects on the books which will be starting over the next few quarters. We have also started to see some modest [lumber] production curtailments, which over time will become more prevalent if pricing remains depressed," Loebner said.
Steady demand for the essential building commodity, combined with declining supply due to potential production curtailments could ultimately spell upside for lumber in the future, at least as long as demand holds up.
"We are in for a slower grind and a more challenging market environment. However with many of the benchmark commodity lumber items already down approximately 70% from their levels earlier this year, the pervasive bearish sentiment, and the likelihood of less supply, traders would be well advised to consider the risk/reward of being overly negative at this point," Loebner concluded.

US stocks rose on Wednesday ahead of the Federal Reserve's expected decision to raise interest rates for the fifth time this year.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is expected to raise rates by 75 basis points, though some argue he should raise them by 100 basis points or more in an aggressive bid to tame inflation.
August's hot CPI report showing inflation remains sticky means investors will also be focusing on Powell's press briefing at 2:30 p.m. ET, in which he is likely to shed some light on how many more rate increases to expect from the Fed going into the end of the year.
Current market expectations suggest the Fed will hike by another 75 basis points at its November FOMC meeting, followed by another 50-basis-point increase at its December meeting. That would put the fed funds rate between 4.25% and 4.50%. At the start of the year, it was between 0% and 0.25%.
Here's where US indexes stood shortly after the 9:30 a.m. ET open on Wednesday:

Goldman Sachs raised its forecasts for interest rate increases at the Federal Reserve's next two meetings as monetary policy makers have been asserting the view that more rate hikes are needed to bring down inflation.
The investment bank now expects the Federal Open Market Committee to raise the Fed Funds target by 75 basis points in September and by 50 basis points in November. It previously projected increases of 50 and 25 basis points, respectively.
"[Fed] officials have sounded hawkish recently and have seemed to imply that progress toward taming inflation has not been as uniform or as rapid as they would like," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said in a late Wednesday note.
He also outpointed a Wednesday report by The Wall Street Journal that said the Fed appears to be on a path to raise interest rates 75 basis points this month following Chairman Jerome Powell's pledge to reduce inflation even if it increases unemployment.
The WSJ report is "a likely hint from the Fed leadership" that a three-quarter-point percentage increase will take place at the September 20-21 meeting, said Hatzius, adding that hawkishness is overriding the case for slowing the pace of tightening that Powell outlined at the July meeting.
Goldman expects another rate hike in December, 25 basis points, which would bring the Fed Funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4% by the end of 2022. The Fed has already raised interest rates four times, to a range of 2.25% to 2.5%. The Fed raised its key rate by 75 basis points at its past two meetings.
Powell reiterated his anti-inflation message on Thursday at the Cato Institute's 40th Annual Monetary Conference. "I can assure you that my colleagues and I are strongly committed to this project and we will keep at it until the job is done," Powell said, according to CNBC.
Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard has also been among the Fed's hawkish voices. "We are in this for as long as it takes to get inflation down," she said in a speech in New York on Wednesday. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester also spoke on Wednesday. "I'm not even convinced that inflation's peaked yet," she reportedly said on a Market News International webcast.
Now pricing in a rate hike path of 75-50-25 points for the next three meetings, Goldman Sachs also said its own financial conditions index has tightened on the hawkish shift in expectations.
"This should be enough to keep growth on a solidly below-potential path in the second half of 2022. How the drag from tighter financial conditions will net out with other key growth impulses in 2023 is more uncertain, and we could imagine the hiking cycle extending beyond this year," said Hatzius.

The European Central Bank on Thursday raised interest rates by 75 basis points as the eurozone battles to keep spiraling inflation in check.
The central bank announced that its base rate would increase from 0% to 0.75% in a press release, saying the move comes as a step "to dampen demand and guard against the risk of a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations."
The hike — the largest in ECB history — is the second in as many meetings for the central bank, which in July increased rates for the first time since 2019, moving its base rate from minus 0.5% to 0%, a first increase under its president, Christine Lagarde.
The euro was trading marginally higher after the ECB decision at $ 1.0020. On Monday, the single currency fell below $ 0.99 for the first time in two decades after Russia halted flows of natural gas to Europe.
Raising rates for a second time in three months comes against a backdrop of economic peril for Europe as it fights to combat the soaring cost of living, triggered largely by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has pushed up both food and energy prices in recent months.
Inflation in the Eurozone reached 9.1% in August, up from 8.9% in July, its highest level since the creation of the single currency in 1999.
Central banks across the globe are raising rates to combat inflation, with the Federal Reserve in the US having hiked three times already in 2022, and the Bank of England bumping rates six times since December to reach 1.75%.
An ECB rate hike had been widely expected by analysts, with only the scale of the increase in question. Opinions had differed on whether the central bank would raise by 50 basis points, as it did in July, or by the larger 75 basis points. Further hikes are expected in coming months.

US stocks opened mixed ahead of the Federal Reserve's beige book survey of regional business and economic conditions later on Wednesday.
The report comes as the Fed is due to meet on September 20-21. While some commentators have forecasted smaller rate hikes moving forward, a Wednesday Wall Street Journal article suggested that another 75-basis-point hike could hit in September, which would be the third consecutive move of that size.
Through 2022, the labor market has showed strength, with employers adding 315,000 jobs in August. Next week, markets will be watching as the US Labor Department releases its inflation report for the month of August, which will hold implications for the next potential rate hike.
Here's where US indexes stood as the market opened 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday:
The US dollar has surged 13% against the euro and 20% against the yen this year. Aggressive Fed policy and recession fears have pushed the greenback to a 20-year high.
China's yuan, however, has weakened even as Beijing tries to prop up the currency. On Wednesday, it slipped closer to the key threshold of 7 per dollar.
"Big Short" investor Michael Burry said the epic market crash he predicted is already in full swing. The famed commentator has repeatedly sounded the alarm on speculative assets, and flagged crypto and meme stocks as early victims to the current downturn.
Meanwhile, China and India could take advantage of a Russian oil price cap and buy more cheap barrels, according to US Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo. At a Tuesday conference, he voiced hopefulness that the two Asian nations would join the US-led price cap coalition.
In Europe, Germany is making a U-turn on nuclear energy policy, as it plans to keep two plants as backups while the natural gas crisis continues to intensify.
France, for its part, is reviving a disused gas pipeline to aid Germany. It will deliver about 2% of Germany's natural gas needs this winter, following Russia's halt of Nord Stream 1 flows.
Oil prices dropped, with West Texas Intermediate down 2.95% to $ 84.22 a barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 2.77% to $ 90.26 a barrel.
Gold edged lower 0.23% to $ 1,709.00 per ounce. The 10-year yield ticked lower 4 basis points to 3.302%.
Bitcoin dropped 0.11% to $ 18,850.11.

Piers Morgan grilled Thérèse Coffey after she suggested that Britain’s ageing population and level of obesity led to the worst Covid-related death rate in the world. Recent Oxford University research showed that the UK currently has the highest daily coronavirus death rate in the world. Piers Morgan accused the Government’s Work and Pensions Secretary of suggesting the UK population was “too old and too fat”.
The Good Morning Britain host said: “Can you explain why we currently have the worst death rate in the world?
“And can you explain why we have one of the highest death tolls in the world?
“If we did everything right, how have we ended up here?”
Ms Coffey said: “We have been learning throughout this process, working with scientific advisors on taking the appropriate policies.”
JUST IN: Thérèse Coffey hangs up on Piers Morgan interview ‘Insulting!’
She continued: “There will be a variety of reasons why people, unfortunately, have died.
“Some of that will be recognising the age of our population, some of that will be recognising the obesity of our population.”
Piers responded: “Just to clarify, I applaud you for giving us some reasons.
GMB co-host Susanne Reid added: “That is the first time we have heard a government minister settle on a couple of explanations.”
Piers hit back: “You just said it!”
Ms Coffey added: “I’m conscious there will be a variety of factors that have led to people sadly being ill during this time, sadly that translating into deaths.”
Shortly after this exchange, the Conservative MP walked out of the interview, prompting a social media frenzy.
Ms Coffey said: “I wish we had more time, but we were meant to start at 8:15.
“Piers I’m sorry, I’m going to have to go. You’ve already had 20 minutes of my time, I appreciate your time as well. Thank you, goodbye.”
GMB later tweeted: “Therese Coffey accused Piers Morgan of being insulting for repeating her words that the UK’s worst global death rate is due to the age and obesity of the population.”
Susanne Reid also pointed out that Boris Johnson himself said weight was a factor after he recovered from Covid.
The pound has climbed against the euro after figures showed Italy fell into recession at the end of 2018, while German consumers stopped spending in December. Sterling has endured a political rollercoaster this week after MPs voted in Parliament on Brexit for Prime Minister Theresa May to return to Brussels to try and thrash out the arrangement of the Irish backstop. The pound is currently trading at €1.144 against the euro, according to Bloomberg at the time of writing. Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.
“The GBP/EUR exchange rate was able to advance 0.4 per cent on Thursday,” Parsons said.
“While the pound struggled against the other majors due to a lack of positive UK news, the euro broadly softened in response to the news that the Italian economy returned to recession for the third time in ten years.
“Today GBP/EUR could be moved by the UK manufacturing PMI, which is expected to show a decline in output.
“However, any pound losses could be limited if the Eurozone’s inflation report shows a softening in consumer price pressures.”
In UK political news, concerns are rising over whether Theresa May can secure a deal with Brussels over the newly-amended Brexit withdrawal deal, with the EU showing an increasing unwillingness to renegotiate terms on the Irish backstop.
European Council president Donald Tusk has insisted that the Withdrawal Agreement struck last November was not open for renegotiation.
Pound traders are focusing on the possibility of an extension to Article 50, which May has not ruled out, with the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, also remaining open on the issue today.
Mr Hunt said: “I think that depends on how long this process takes… We can’t know at this stage exactly which of those scenarios would happen.”
Michael Brown, Senior Analyst at Caxton FX said: “As the Prime Minister heads to Brussels to attempt a renegotiation of the Irish backstop, EU leaders continue to maintain their position that the Withdrawal Agreement will not be reopened, casting doubt on the government’s plan ‘B’.
“While the markets have absorbed some uncertainty based on a low probability outcome of a ‘no-deal’ exit, the Pound suffered a setback earlier this week, falling by around 0.8 per cent, after amendments that would have ruled out such an outcome were not passed in Parliament.
“Sterling is unlikely to significantly extend its gains in the coming weeks unless official confirmation of an extension to Article 50 emerges and as the political uncertainty continues.
“Overall, it is likely that the Pound will begin to drift lower ahead of the second ‘meaningful vote’ if the current stalemate continues with a reversal of this month’s gains becoming more likely.”
As for buying travel money, Greg Baggio, Head of FX at WeSwap said: “In order for holidaymakers to ensure they get the best exchange rates, they should be aware of these important dates and plan when they buy their holiday money accordingly.
“WeSwap’s research has found that nearly half of all Brits find and buy their foreign currency in the space of one day, leaving them vulnerable to forces beyond their control that dictate the strength of the pound.
“When shopping across travel money providers, UK travellers should also shop across a period of time for a stronger rate. Without the use of technology that allows users to set their desired exchange rate, holidaymakers are left watching the exchange rate move up and down.”
The pound to euro exchange rate has decreased despite the odds of a no-deal Brexit slimming, experts have said. On Tuesday, after a day of debate concerning different amendments to the Withdrawal Agreement originally proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May, MPs supported a new approach to reopen the agreement and replace the backstop with “alternative arrangements.” However, May was immediately turned down by Brussels, where European Council president Donald Tusk insisted that the Withdrawal Agreement struck last November was not open for renegotiation. This turn of events saw the pound shaken and plunging as low as €1.1422 – but it managed to recover slightly on Wednesday.
The pound is currently trading at €1.145 against the euro, according to Bloomberg at the time of writing.
Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.
“The GBP/EUR exchange rate slid after MPs voted in favour of re-opening negotiations over the Irish border issue on Tuesday,” she said.
“The pound dropped back to €1.143 and held losses despite the odds of a no-deal Brexit receding.
“The GBP/EUR exchange rate also failed to capitalise on a contraction in German inflation.
“However, if today’s run of Eurozone data (including German unemployment and Eurozone GDP) fails to impress, Sterling might just edge higher over the course of the day.”
Brexit will continue to provide a background of much uncertainty for the pound in the coming months, with the currency remaining unstable, experts caution.
Tyler Griffin, currency specialist at OFX, said: “We expect much volatility between now and the next key vote on 13th/14th February, and in the short term there will be major pressure on the pound, especially against the US Dollar.
“One more slip from Theresa May and we could see the pound hit the deck and fall back below 1.30 against the dollar.”
Holidaymakers are urged to be savvy when it comes to buying holiday money and keep an eye on the market to make sure they are not losing out.
“All travel experts will tell you that, when it comes to travel money, it pays to be prepared,” Greg Baggio, Head of FX at WeSwap said.
“This doesn’t just mean taking advantage of the best rates in advance of your trip. Events such as the political scrutiny of Theresa May’s Brexit Plan B can have a massive impact on the exchange rate, particularly when they concern the economy and public spending.
“Despite performing at a twelve month high last week, the pound has plummeted amidst this political uncertainty. In order for holidaymakers to ensure they get the best exchange rates, they should be aware of these important dates and plan when they buy their holiday money accordingly.
Without the use of technology that allows users to set their desired exchange rate, holidaymakers are left watching the exchange rate move up and down.
“With increases to Air Passenger Duty looming this April, along with the uncertainty surrounding how leaving the EU will affect our holiday plans, we simply cannot afford to buy our foreign currency in the space of one day as it will leave us susceptible to losses to the tune of hundreds.”
The ongoing Brexit uncertainty “lit a fire” sending the value of sterling soaring last week, according to experts. The failure of Prime Minister Theresa May and her government to find a divorce deal from the European Union has sparked unexpected consequences for the pound. Earlier this month, the pound reached a two month high against the euro. The pound is currently trading at €1.155 according to Bloomberg, at the time of writing.
According to Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, there could be more benefits to come amid the ongoing Brexit negotiations.
She told Express.co.uk: “Brexit speculation lit a fire under the pound last week and sent the GBP/EUR exchange rate three cents higher to trade in the region of €1.156.
“Sterling also gained against the other majors ahead of Tuesday’s vote on PM Theresa May’s Brexit deal.
“While that will be the week’s main UK news, we’ve also got speeches from Bank of England (BoE) officials and UK confidence data on the horizon.
Her comments will no doubt prove a boost to those hoping the boom is not just a flash in the pan.
Last week, shortly after MPs voted on Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal, sterling reached a two month high.
“Modest gains” were then seen on Wednesday, with the pound trading at €1.141.
Meanwhile, the political discussions have prompted experts to issue advice for holidaymakers purchasing euros.
The comparative high at the moment should encourage Britons heading to the European Union (EU) on holiday to buy travel money before the exchange rate is shaken up, experts have said.
“Currency must play a pivotal role in holiday planning, and savvy holidaymakers should be keeping a very close eye on currency and its reaction to the latest political events,” Ian Strafford-Taylor, CEO of currency expert FairFX said.
Yet with regard to the security of holiday’s in a Brexit era, travellers can take heart.
The Government has stated nothing will change during the Brexit transition period which runs to December 2020.
In the no-deal scenario, the European Commission has advised that UK airlines will still continue to operate flights between the UK and EU.
If flights have been booked through companies protected by ABTA, they are fully protected under Package Travel Regulations.
This means passengers will be entitled to a full refund if their holiday can no longer go ahead.
