Today’s This Morning began with a heated discussion between Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Nick Ferrari and Michelle Gayle about Rashford’s call for the government to help provide free meals for children who need them over the coming summer holidays. The debate touched upon Ms Coffey’s response to Ashford’s latest tweets this morning in which he asked MPs to imagine what life is like for those children who wake up to empty shelves and no running water.

Following his open letter to MPs in Parliament about providing free school meals to children over the summer holidays which went viral on social media yesterday, Marcus continued with his campaign this morning with a series of tweets.

Speaking about Rashford’s campaign, Nick Ferrari remarked: “Marcus Rashfor we all know, or if your viewers don’t know, is a tremendously skilful football player.

“He is an equally skilful campaigner. He sent out a series of tweets this morning, brilliantly, ‘If you’ve just turned on your shower, think of the children where there’s no power. If you’ve just opened your fridge and you’ve got milk think of the children who don’t have any food.’ I mean brilliant.”

“Absolutely brilliant,” Schofield replied. “To be completely lauded here for this effort, for bringing the issue such massive attention.

“However, you’ve got ‘When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown #maketheuturn.’

“Thérèse Coffey, who is the Secretary of State replied ‘Water cannot be disconnected though.’”

“What the hell kind of reaction is that?” Schofield raged.

“4. Recognise children around the country are this morning innocently questioning ‘why?’ 9 out of 30 children in any given classroom are today asking ‘why?’ ‘Why does our future not matter?’ #maketheuturn.”

Responding to his series of tweets, Ms Coffey posted: “Water cannot be disconnected though.”

Ms Coffey has since tweeted Rashford again saying she welcomes his passion to support young children.

She wrote in view of her 23,700 followers: “Hi @MarcusRashford, I welcome your passion for supporting children and the most vulnerable in society – a passion we share.

Rashford’s close-range finish came after Anthony Martial’s effort had cancelled out Callum Wilson’s early opener for Bournemouth at Dean Court.

It was United’s third victory in their last four Premier League games, extending an upturn in form that was started by the home victory over Newcastle United when Jose Mourinho’s side recovered from a two-goal deficit.

The result will strengthen Mourinho’s belief his side are on the up, although the United manager could easily have been contemplating a defeat had the home side made more of a succession of early chances.

Mourinho had expressed his confidence before this game that United’s position in the Premier League table would look very different heading into the second half of the season.

“I think by the end of December, which is the end of the first half of the Premier League, I think we are not going to be in the position we are now. We are going to be in a better position,” he said.

If the Portuguese’s prediction is to come true, United must shake off the inconsistency that has so far undermined their efforts this season.

This was a start, particularly as Bournemouth had begun the season so impressively.

Mourinho will know, however, there must be much more to come if they are to revive their challenge for a top four place.

Romelu Lukaku was a surprising absentee, with Mourinho revealing before the game the forward had not travelled to the south coast after picking up an injury the day before.

“In training yesterday, after the press conference, he felt something that needs to be studied in the next couple of days,” Mourinho said.

“So Lukaku has not come and we decided to start with Alexis (Sanchez).”

Lukaku had started on the bench against Everton six days previously so his starting place was far from guaranteed – he has not scored in nine games for his club.

But Mourinho decided not to risk the Belgian with the Champions League trip to Juventus looming.

Sanchez got the nod ahead of Rashford, a starter against Everton, but the Chile international had little chance to shine during the opening stages when Bournemouth could have sealed the points.

The visitors struggled to cope with Bournemouth’s pacy front players and Eddie Howe’s side exploited the lack of organisation in the United backline, forcing the lead in the 11th minute after a period of sustained pressure.

Wilson was denied by David De Gea and Junior Stanislas’s shot deflected wide before United finally cracked after failing to deal with the resulting corner.

Luke Shaw headed clear but Mourinho’s side were guilty of failing to put pressure on the ball, allowing Stanislas to drill in a low cross that was turned home by an unmarked Wilson.

United finally clicked in the 35th minute when Sanchez showed his worth. The former Arsenal forward won the ball in midfield, with the help of his arm, according to the Bournemouth players, and played it wide to Ashley Young before advancing into the box to collect the return and set up Martial for the 35th minute equaliser.

Mourinho’s side were fortunate to be level at half-time but after the restart, they improved the longer the game went on and should have claimed a decisive second goal after Young struck the bar with a free-kick.

The ball fell to Rashford whose close range shot was blocked by Nathan Ake. However, Rashford made amends in the final seconds when he turned in Paul Pogba’s cross from close-range.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho goes on bizarre Marcus Rashford rant after transfer encouraged https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-goes-on-bizarre-marcus-rashford-rant-after-transfer-encouraged/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-goes-on-bizarre-marcus-rashford-rant-after-transfer-encouraged/#respond Fri, 14 Sep 2018 10:48:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-goes-on-bizarre-marcus-rashford-rant-after-transfer-encouraged/

Manchester United striker Rashford enjoyed a fine international break, scoring in matches against Spain and Switzerland.

He was, however, encouraged to leave Old Trafford in the wake of his Wembley heroics with many blasting Mourinho for failing to give him enough game time.

But Mourinho has now hit back at his Manchester United critics in a bizarre rant, where he channelled his inner Louis van Gaal by reeling off statistics to journalists in the room.

“Speaking about Marcus, I think I can expect that Sunday I’m going to be highly criticised for not playing him tomorrow, because some of the boys are really obsessed with me and some of them have a problem with some compulsive lies,” said Mourinho.

“So I can expect that Sunday some of them will wake up in the morning and the first thing they think of is Jose Mourinho, so I can imagine on Sunday I am going to be criticised for not playing Marcus but it’s not my fault, he’s suspended, so probably you should remind them he is suspended and cannot play.

“So I’m going to do something, not for you, but the United fans, and I think I hold myself to the United fans and so for them I am going to spend two mins with you.

“In 2016-17, Marcus Rashford played 32 Premier League matches, 11 Europa League matches, including the final, three FA Cup matches, six League Cup matches, including the final, and the Community Shield.

“He had 53 appearances, but if you want to take to the minutes of play, he played 3,068, and if you wan to divide that by 90-minute matches, he played 34.2 matches of 90-minute matches in 2016-17.

“In 2017-18, he played 35 Premier League matches, eight in the Champions League, five in the FA Cup, three League Cup matches and the European Super Cup final.

“He played a total of 52 matches with 2,676 mins, and if you divide that by 90, it gives you 29.7 matches, so with me, in two seasons, he had 105 appearances, 5,774 mins, 63.7 matches of 90 minutes, including five finals, so the people speaking about these minutes, I think they are a bit confused.

“Marcus is not Dominic Solanke, not Ruben Loftus-Cheek, not Dominic Calvert-Lewin, he’s Marcus Rashford, a Manchester United player, with an incredible number of appearances and an incredible number of minutes played at the highest level in the best possible competitions.

“So Manchester United supporters, for you and just for you, to know what we are doing with Marcus, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, that’s what we are doing here.”

Mourinho’s weird rant came after Jamie Carragher urged Rashford to swap United for Everton.

“Romelu Lukaku is in front of Rashford and I don’t see Rashford displacing him as long as he is there,” he said.

“But remember when Lukaku was at Chelsea and he had to come away and go to Everton. Then he ended up as top scorer and got his move to Man Utd.

“Possibly Everton is the sort of club you are looking at, just below the top six, for someone like Rashford, similar to what Lukaku did.

“You know you are going to play every week as the centre-forward and you know if you have a couple of games where you don’t score then you are still going to play the next week.

“Last season after they played Brighton away, Mourinho had a little pop at him and Lukaku went straight back into the team. That’s the problem you will always have.

“Does he have to leave United? I think so. Is he good enough to displace Lukaku? Is Rashford good enough to be Manchester United’s centre-forward for them trying to win the Premier League or the Champions League? He may not be.

“It gets to the stage where you want to play every week. Will he be an England regular or be Manchester United’s real centre-forward where you know, when the team is picked every week, that he is in it. Will it ever get to that stage?”

England vs Spain: Gareth Southgate’s side return to Wembley for the first time since their best World Cup performance in 28 years

ENGLAND 1-1 SPAIN | RASHFORD (11), SAUL (12)

England XI: Pickford, Maguire, Stones, Gomez; Trippier, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Shaw; Rashford, Kane.

Spain XI: De Gea, Carvajal, Nacho, Ramos, Alonso, Busquets, Saúl, Thiago, Isco, Aspas, Rodrigo.

  • Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford start for Three Lions
  • Marcus Rashford converts from Luke Shaw cross
  • Saul Niguez equalises 60 seconds later

ENGLAND 1-1 SPAIN | SAUL

12: Ah, well that certainly wasn’t in the script.

60 seconds after Marcus Rashford gave England the lead, Spain have hit back through Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez, who drills Thiago’s cutback beyond the helpless Jordan Pickford.

Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard probably shouldn’t have allowed Thiago to reach the byline. Anyway, we’re level in the Nations League.

ENGLAND 1-0 SPAIN | RASHFORD

11: England have taken the lead, and boy what style!

The Three Lions win possession in their own half and break like lightning through Manchester United’s Luke Shaw. He drives down the left and spots his colleague Marcus Rashford, who simply converts the inch-perfect low cross.

Liquid football from the hosts.

10: Joe Gomez can’t resist jumping in on Saul Niguez and concedes a free-kick on the left touchline. Jordan Pickford gathers, but only after the diminutive Iago Aspas was afforded a free-header inside the penalty area. Not too smart from the Three Lions.

8: I’m quite surprised to see that Marcos Alonso and Sergio Ramos are 12/1 and 20/1 respectively to score the first goal tonight. Worth a pound or two…

England pressing high up the field to cause Spain problems, but the visitors have avoided losing the ball in critical positions thus far.

5: Not affected by the chorus of boos, Ramos plays a sublime crossfield pass to Thiago, who is just offside. I get the sense that the Real Madrid defender quite enjoys the hostility.

3: It’s pretty strange to have Sky coverage for England games. I never thought I’d say I missed Lee Dixon and Mark Pougatch but international football does strange things.

Anyway, it’s been a fairly inauspicious start with Spain happy to play possession football with Sergio Ramos being booed every time he touches the ball… which is quite a lot in a Luis Enrique side.

ENGLAND 0-0 SPAIN

1: And we’re underway. I don’t think anyone’s got a clue how this game is going to play out. I’ll sit on the fence and plump for a 1-1 draw. I’m brave like that.

AWARD/REWARD

19:43: There’s a huge cheer for Harry Kane, who is awarded his Golden Boot award from the World Cup by manager Gareth Southgate. Time for the national anthems. Spain up first…

HERE COME THE BOYS…

19:40: Harry Kane, and his golden boots, lead England out at a sell-out Wembley. There’s plenty of flags flying as they emerge from the tunnel.

I’ll now be accepting your predictions. Before you send them in, I’m already backing Marcos Alonso to score – the guy is an attacking machine.

POINT PROVEN…

19:34: And right on cue, Sergio Ramos’ name is booed mercilessly inside Wembley when his name is read out. I think the thing about pantomime villains is that they quite like being pantomime villains. He just smiles.

SEDUCTION…

19:30: Spain captain Sergio Ramos and his team mates want to seduce world football again after tumbling from the summit of the game.

Spain have had disappointing showings at their last three major tournaments since dominating the world game between 2008 and 2012 when they lifted back-to-back European Championship titles either side of their first World Cup triumph.

They endured a nightmare World cup campaign when they were knocked out by unfancied hosts Russia after Spain coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the tournament.

However, Ramos said there was renewed enthusiasm around the squad since Luis Enrique, who was a serial winner during his three seasons in charge of Barcelona, had take over.

“In the last few years Spain have dropped a couple of levels and our objective is to recover what made us win in the first place,” Ramos said. “The coach and players have a great challenge in front of us in trying to win again. We have a lot of ambition but we have to show it. We want the world to fall in love with us again.”

I suspect Ramos will have a tougher task making Liverpool supporters fall in love with him…

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Rory: Will be great to see Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane up top together, would be fantastic to see them at Spurs together as well!

Sooner: It’s not a vintage Spain team but let’s be honest, a midfield with Busquets, Thiago Alcantara and Isco should run rings round England. Trying to control midfield against technically superior players was England’s weak spot at the World Cup. We’ll see though!

Peter: Lets remember we only beat Tunisia, Panama, Columbia & Sweden in Russia. We lost to Croatia and twice to Belgium. Tonight will give us a much more realistic idea of where England are at.

GOLDEN BOOTS

19:20: Harry Kane will wear a pair of golden boots and I can hardly contain my excitement…

It will be the England skipper’s first international appearance since being awarded the Golden Boot for finishing as the top scorer at the summer’s World Cup.

Tottenham striker Kane scored six goals during the tournament in Russia, helping England reach the semi-finals.

Kane tweeted a picture of the boots, provided by Nike, and wrote: “Buzzing to wear these tomorrow night. Gold boots.”

We’re all buzzing, Harry. We’re all buzzing…

HAPPY CAMPERS

19:10: Gareth Southgate was quick to seize on the apparent disconnect between the Three Lions and the public at large when he arrived in the job.

That problem manifested itself most obviously at the national stadium, where early qualifying games attracted indifferent crowds, occasional boos and an abundance of paper aeroplanes.

Events in Russia completed the job of reviving the relationship and Southgate’s squad have earned a celebratory atmosphere on their return.

NEED A SCALP…

19:05: I’ve been watching a TV show called Mr Mercedes recently, and talk of scalps has me feeling uneasy. You should binge that series the second tonight’s game finishes.

Anyway, England’s progress in the past two years has been tangible and impressive.

Winning pressure knockout games and coming through a penalty shoot-out represent considerable improvements but Southgate is first to admit he has yet to knock a truly elite opponent off their perch.

Despite falling below expectations in Russia, Spain would easily fit that criteria, especially in a competitive environment. England gave away the lead late on last time Spain visited and going one better would be a feather in the cap.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Bradley: I’m absolutely buzzing that Luke Shaw is actually the best left back in the world again!

Gerard: This is either a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 formation. Gomez, Maguire, Stones all Centre Backs and Trippier is RB/RM while Luke Shaw is LB/LM. Either way, we got a lot of talented defenders and a few good keepers! Just need more attackers to prove themselves.

Henry: Three years since Luke Shaw made his last start for England, so great to see him starting tonight. Showed real character to fight back from that horrendous tibia and fibia injury against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Lots of love for Luke Shaw tonight, who will presumably be delighted to not have Jose Mourinho screaming at him from the touchline…

TEAM NEWS – SPAIN

18:55: Luis Enrique names his Spain squad, and there’s more than a few familiar faces included.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, quite rightly, starts at left-back with former Bolton (yes really) colleague Rodrigo spearheading the attack in the absence of Diego Costa.

Obviously there’s no Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and David Silva in the Spain squad, so Saul Niguez, Iago Aspas and Nacho are included.

David de Gea is between the sticks.

TEAM NEWS – ENGLAND

18:50: Right then, let’s take a closer look at this starting XI. Gareth Southgate is sticking to the tactics that earned a semi-final place at the 2018 World Cup with five at the back.

Jordan Pickford retains his place between the sticks with the familiar sight of Kieran Trippier, John Stones and Harry Maguire ahead of him.

But there are new faces in the shape of Liverpool’s Joe Gomes and Luke Shaw, who is enjoying regular first-team football for Manchester United.

Jordan Henderson, Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard form the midfield three with Harry Kane partnered by Marcus Rashford in the absence of Raheem Sterling.

It’s a pretty fluid team selection. That’s what they say nowadays, right? Fluid…

ENGLAND vs SPAIN

18:45: And here comes the starting XI. A quick glance tells me that Gareth Southgate has brought Joe Gomez straight into the fold. He starts in a back three alongside Harry Maguire and John Stones. Manchester Unite duo Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford also start.

England XI: Pickford, Maguire, Stones, Gomez; Trippier, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Shaw; Rashford, Kane.

Subs: Walker, Butland, Alexander-Arnold, Rose, Tarkowski, Dier, Loftus-Cheek, Delph, Welbeck, McCarthy, Bettinelli.

BIZARRE

18:40: I’m aware that this story has very little to do with tonight’s clash, but I have to mention it otherwise my head will explode.

John Terry is poised to move to Spartak Moscow on a one-year contract…

Terry, 37, has already undergone a medical and Spartak hinted at an imminent announcement on their Twitter account.

TEST…

18:35: So, after years of tournament failures and steadily dwindling expectations, England’s surprise run to the World Cup semi-finals has given us optimism.

Not a familiar feeling for England supporters, granted, but tonight should provide an early test of the depth of the feelgood factor emanating from Gareth Southgate’s young squad.

Is Southgate’s quiet revolution in full swing, or have Spain recovered from their chaotic World Cup?

EVENING…

18:30: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of England vs Spain from Wembley Stadium.

All the memories of the World Cup are flooding back, right?

I walked into the office this afternoon expecting to see England flags flying from windows, Three Lions blaring from car radios and empty beer cans strewn all over the floor.

No sign of the flags or music but there were plenty of cans…

OK, the hype of this summer’s World Cup has clearly gone, but Gareth Southgate has completed the job of reviving the relationship with the public and there should be a celebratory atmosphere tonight as we start our Nations League campaign.

“What the hell is ‘Nations League?” I hear you ask. I’ll do my best to explain it shortly.

Let’s get those line-ups, shall we?

England’s fairytale came to an end in the semi-finals as Croatia recorded a 2-1 victory in extra-time.

Kieran Trippier’s early free-kick put the Three Lions in the driving seat in Moscow, but Ivan Perisic levelled midway through the second half and Mario Mandzukic’s extra-time strike sent Croatia through to Sunday’s final against France.

But England’s performances in Russia have been met with joy back home with Southgate credited with bringing the love of international football back into the hearts of many back home – a view shared by England forward Rashford.

“You’ve brought belief and the love of football back. Thank you boss from the whole nation.”, the Manchester United forward tweeted alongside a photo of himself embracing his boss.

England players were clearly devastated at the result last night, the Three Lions’ first semi-final appearance in 28 years.

But all of them are remaining positive about what lies ahead for this young team under Southgate’s leadership.

Captain Harry Kane told his two million followers: “It hurts a lot. It will hurt for a while. We can be proud and we’ll be back. Thanks for all your support.”

Midfielder Jesse Lingard said: “Was an honour to represent my country at the world cup. The squad we have is a great bunch of lads who are willing to learn and give everything and we can hold our heads high. Thank you to everyone who supported our journey – we dont stop here!”

England’s youngest player at the tournament, Trent Alexander-Arnold declared his appreciation for being part of the experience.

“Absolutely devastated that our journey is over! We enjoyed every moment as a nation, I’d like to thank all the staff and fans for being behind us,” he tweeted.

“It has been an honour to be a part of this special team. We will be back stronger.”

Centre-back Harry Maguire added: “Devastated. Absolutely gutted. Thanks to the fans for your incredible support.”

Goalkeeper Jack Butland wrote: “Devastated to not be coming back here for the final on Sunday but this is just the beginning for this squad! To each and every @England fan, the support has been incredible and we can’t thank you enough! £ThreeLions”

Forward Jamie Vardy posted: “Gutted….. Thank you to every one of you who have been there each step of the way! The support at each game has been incredible. Sorry we couldn’t cross that final hurdle. Congrats to Croatia and good luck to you in the final £England”

England can now look to build on their World Cup showing with the support of the nation behind them with the 2020 European Championships two years away.

World Cup 2018: Marcus Rashford gives Gareth Southgate England issue after Costa Rica win https://briefnews.eu/world-cup-2018-marcus-rashford-gives-gareth-southgate-england-issue-after-costa-rica-win/ https://briefnews.eu/world-cup-2018-marcus-rashford-gives-gareth-southgate-england-issue-after-costa-rica-win/#respond Fri, 08 Jun 2018 00:03:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/world-cup-2018-marcus-rashford-gives-gareth-southgate-england-issue-after-costa-rica-win/

Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck were both on target as the Three Lions rounded off their World Cup preparations with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica at Elland Road.

Rashford fired into the roof of the net with a stunning 30-yard strike after 13 minutes, while Welbeck added the finishing touches to the victory in the second half when he headed home Dele Alli’s cross.

After a two-week camp, the Three Lions will head to Russia in high spirits.

Although Southgate has come under scrutiny for choosing arguably a youthful and inexperienced squad, he has revealed he hasn’t made any concrete decisions as to who will start against Tunisia on June 18.

He said: “I might sleep on it!”

When pressed further, Southgate continued: “If it’s complicated, it’s in a really good way. We need options.

“We seem to have got through the two games without serious injuries and we have given ourselves a really good platform.”

Southgate was also effusive in his praise for Rashford, adding: “What pleased me most is that Marcus Rashford enjoyed his football tonight.

“He played with a real swagger. He’s a Manchester United player and he got booed at the start and cheered off at the end.

“We have got great competition for places throughout the team – you saw that tonight.”

Rashford believes he has areas to improve with his game, but didn’t temper expectations of how far England can go at the tournament.

He said: “You work on them [goals] in training every day and when one comes up in a game it’s a reward.

“I feel in good physical form leading up to the tournament.

“I still need to get in the box a bit more to finish off chances.

“It means a lot to be involved but going to the World Cup and playing a major part in my main aim.

“We have got a good chance. Anything is possible and we have to go there with the highest expectations.”

The victory ensured Gareth Southgate is unbeaten in 10 matches since he took charge in June last year.

The 20-year-old England striker has started only one Premier League fixture in 2018 – scoring twice against Liverpool – and has been growing frustrated at his lack of 90-minute opportunities, especially since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January.

But Mourinho vowed to shake up his team and axe stars like Sanchez and Paul Pogba for tonight’s trip to Bournemouth following Sunday’s shock home defeat to bottom club West Brom.

And Rashford is set to be one of the players recalled with the promise from Mourinho that if they play well at the Vitality Stadium it will book their place for the Wembley clash with Tottenham on Saturday.

After his double against Liverpool, Rashford kept his place for the Champions League last-16 second-leg exit against Seville but has been benched for the last four games.

And Mourinho has refused to bow to the clamour from fans and pundits to include Rashford from the start more often.

He does thinks highly of the academy graduate’s quality and character however and sees him as an important part of United’s future while constantly pointing to the fact he has made more appearances for him than any other player since he took over at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016.

The boss has also explained that because Rashford made such an explosive impact when he broke into the first team during the tail-end of Louis Van Gaal’s time in charge, then gatecrashed England’s Euro 2016 squad, it tended to obscure the fact he is still young, learning the game and needed to be nurtured rather than over-used.

That is why, says Mourinho, his number of starts, 52, is almost equalled by the number of times he has been used as a substitute, 46.

England boss Gareth Southgate, who has spoken to Mourinho about Rashford, will be delighted if the youngster gets more minutes and ends the season with a flourish ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

After the high of the unexpected comeback in the Manchester derby, Mourinho was livid at the performance against Albion, especially as it has jeopardised United’s hopes of finishing second.

They need to win at Bournemouth to restore a four-point lead over their Merseyside rivals – but it could have been seven had they beaten Albion.

And they still need five points from their last five games to make certain of finishing in the top four.

“We lost three points that could have given us great stability for the second position,” he said.

“And we still have the fourth position to fight for because Chelsea won at the weekend and we lost.”

But as well as a victory, Mourinho wants his players, including Rashford, to give him compelling reasons why they should be in his starting line-up at Wembley on Saturday.

UNITED have confirmed they will play Liverpool, Real Madrid and AC Milan as part of a five-game pre-season tour in the USA this summer. They will also play MLS teams Club America and San Jose Earthquakes.

Marcus Rashford has had limited playing opportunities since Christmas

The 20-year-old striker may not like it but he accepts that he has to convince his hard-to-please manager he is worthy of a place with his work on the training ground and by making an impact when he gets an opportunity in the team.

After his stunning double against Liverpool in his first Premier League start since Boxing Day and in front of hugely-encouraged England manager Gareth Southgate, it will be hard for Mourinho to leave him out now, despite the glittering array of attacking talent at his disposal.

But do not bet on it. Rashford was denied the chance of a possible hat-trick by Mourinho, who true to his pragmatic philosophy, took account of his first half booking and sent on Marouane Fellaini – a player who could break up Liverpool’s flow – by “making a foul” with 20 minutes left.

It was not popular with the fans but Fellaini played a big part in helping United survive Liverpool’s late pressure and clinch a vital victory in the chase to be best of the rest.

Mourinho loves Rashford’s down-to-earth attitude and rates him highly as a huge player for United’s future. But he also clearly believes in the ‘tough love’ approach towards a youngster who admits he still has much to learn.

In football you are going to be up, you’re going to be down

Marcus Rashford

Asked if Mourinho had spoken to him to explain why he does not always start him, Rashford replied: “He doesn’t have to. When you are younger than I am and you are learning the game I think you do need it.

“But my experiences from the past mean I understand that’s part of the game. There are only 11 players that can start – it’s just one of the those things.

“It is something you have been through before. If it happens again you will probably deal with it better than the first time it happened to you. It is just another experience.

“In football you are going to be up, you’re going to be down. The most important thing is sticking together as a squad. Everyone turns up every day for training, we all work hard, we all do the necessary things.

“We are all in it together. Sometimes you are in the team, sometimes you are not in the team.”

Academy graduate Rashford says he is also beginning to grasp the tactical appreciation of the game that Mourinho has always demanded from his players.

“Right now I’m probably not learning the most on the pitch,” he said. “It is in training where I’m doing most of my learning. What am I learning? There’s lots of things. It is just the all-round game is starting to become more clear. Things this manager wants is becoming more clear to me. The more you do that, the easier the results come on the pitch.

“You have to take it into the game and today it worked. Personally, taking the confidence from this game into the next games is important.”

Rashford holds Romelu Lukaku – who played a big part in both of his goals – as a good example.

“His determination to improve is the biggest feature I’ve picked up from his game,” said Rashford. “He’s always wanting to improve. He always wants to better himself. When he’s doing it, it pushes others to be better. It is a massive boost to have him at the club.”

And if he ever feels sorry for himself, ‘big brother’ Jesse Lingard – another Academy graduate who has made the first team breakthrough in recent seasons – soon goes to work on him.

“You can’t be depressed around me,” said Lingard. “I’m always winding him up. It’s good that you can be around him to have a laugh and re-assure him that it’s going to come good and that if he gets a chance he will perform and he has done that today.

“He knows he has to be patient. It’s a big club with big players and for players like me and Marcus it’s going to be tough to start every game but once you are on the pitch you have got to make an impact and maybe next game you will be playing. But you’ve got to always work hard and he does.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp set aside his frustration that Sadio Mane should have had a penalty when brought down by Fellaini to take the positives out of Liverpool’s defeat.

“We deserved a draw,” said Klopp. “It is rare you can turn round a 2-0 deficit against Manchester Untied but we were close and we should have done it.”

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho sends message to Gareth Southgate over Marcus Rashford https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-sends-message-to-gareth-southgate-over-marcus-rashford/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-sends-message-to-gareth-southgate-over-marcus-rashford/#respond Mon, 05 Mar 2018 04:14:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-news-jose-mourinho-sends-message-to-gareth-southgate-over-marcus-rashford/

Southgate has expressed concerns that Rashford is not starting enough games for United and the 20-year-old’s minutes on the pitch have decreased following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January to improve Mourinho’s attacking options.

Rashford has made 38 appearances – the joint second highest of any United player this season – but Southgate’s concern is that only 20 of them have been starts, with the other 18 as a substitute.

And the bigger worry for Southgate is that since Rashford’s last Premier League start on Boxing Day, he has played only 311 minutes of football, and just 128 of those in the League.

But Mourinho, who met the England boss for talks at United’s Carrington training ground on Friday, insists Rahsford’s involvement is more than enough to clinch his passage to Russia – if Southgate continues to believe in him.

Asked if he had given re-assurances to Rashford, Mourinho said: “No, I don’t reassure anyone. The main reassurance for him is that he is always selected. There is not one single match when Marcus is not selected to start or to be on the bench.

“I see people sometimes putting doubt over whether he is going to be selected or not for the World Cup but if the national coach trusts him, he selects him.

“It doesn’t matter if he plays for us or doesn’t play. There are many examples of players who don’t play for their clubs at all and they still go to the national teams.

“You have the example of Sergio Romero, who is the second goalkeeper at Manchester United and the first goalkeeper for such an amazing football country like Argentina.

“In your own country [England], you have examples of players who play even without scoring a goal in the Premier League. So it’s up to Gareth Southgate. If he trusts him, he selects him. It doesn’t matter if he plays or if he doesn’t play for Manchester United.”

Despite his limited start-time, Mourinho says he is happy with the progress Rashford has made since he burst on the scene with a flurry of goals under Louis Van Gal two years ago.

And he says Rashford’s ‘feet on the ground’ demeanour will serve him well in the future and is the same as another academy graduate, Scott McTominay, who has made the breakthrough this season.

As United prepared for tonight’s visit to Crystal Palace, Mourinho added: “At his age, what Marcus is doing is more than enough and the experience he’s getting at every level is more than enough for us to be happy with what we think is going to be his future. It’s as simple as that.

“But because he had such an impact at the beginning, probably people expect him to play even more than he does, and score even more than he does and perform even more than what he does but it is not so simple.

“What I see makes me really happy, to see the same boy. When you ask me about Scott McTominay, I spoke about McTominay as a boy before he was a player and Marcus is the same.

“What will keep them both in the right direction, what will make them have that stability to improve is what they are as boys. And Marcus is a fantastic boy, also very grounded. For sure, we love him and we believe in him, and he’s going to have the chances.”

What Palace boss Roy Hodgson is worried about is not so much the boys but the man who has already tormented his defence this season.

Sanchez has previous at Selhurst Park, scoring twice to help secure Arsenal’s 3-2 win just before the turn of the year.

The striker returns tonight with his new club searching for a return to scoring form after netting just once in seven appearances for United – his only goal since that December double.

Hodgson knows the Chile striker still poses a major threat as Palace attempt to haul themselves back out of the bottom three at the start of a month that also sees them face Chelsea and Liverpool.

“We are going to be playing against a very good player and if we give him a lot of time and space, and if we give him a lot of opportunities to do the things he is good at, he is likely to succeed,” said Hodgson.

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford reveals how Ronaldo made him the player he is https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-star-marcus-rashford-reveals-how-ronaldo-made-him-the-player-he-is/ https://briefnews.eu/man-utd-star-marcus-rashford-reveals-how-ronaldo-made-him-the-player-he-is/#respond Sun, 12 Nov 2017 23:31:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/man-utd-star-marcus-rashford-reveals-how-ronaldo-made-him-the-player-he-is/

But the lesson he learned watching the Real Madrid Galactico when he scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 defeat by Manchester United in April 2003 has stayed with him all his footballing career.

“He always played free,” the England striker said simply. “No matter where he was playing, he played free and went out there and expressed himself. When you do that, that’s when you play your best football.

“You model yourself on him naturally. When you’re young you watch clips of the best players in the world and try and emulate them.”

Rashford admits his specific memories of that night at Old Trafford are a bit sketchy but his view of Ronaldo himself have been reinforced over the years thanks to a diet of YouTube clips hand-fed to him by older brother and mentor Dwaine.

So it no surprise that his face, normally furrowed in concentration during media interviews, breaks into a smile when some old comments from his hero are replayed to him.

“He’s a very good young player,” said Ronaldo as long ago as May 2016.

“I see some of myself in him for sure – he has courage and he’s fast and is very good with the ball. For the strikers, they have to be hungry to score and I see that with him. He has an amazing future.”

Rashford all but blushed. “I used to watch a lot of him growing up,” he said. “All of his games. He was my brother’s favourite player, that’s why I’ve grown up watching so much of him.

“He was obviously a top player who won a lot of things in his career, so when you know he’s saying good things about you then it really stands out.”

Ronaldo will not be the only Brazil legend keeping one eye on the Manchester United striker tomorrow when Brazil visit Wembley. Rashford was also rubbing shoulders this summer with Ronaldinho – the man whose floated free-kick wrong-footed David Seaman and knocked England out of the 2002 World Cup.

“He was also a top, top player,” said Rashford. “That sort of player is rare but Brazil had two of them. I bumped into Ronaldinho in the summer. He was in a Nike complex where we were doing some training and he had some commercial stuff to do. He’s a really nice guy and obviously had a fantastic career.”

Two top-notch strikers is something England manager Gareth Southgate wants to see more of as the man who played in the era of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham looks to forge a new striker partnership to spearhead England to success.

These days, most teams play with just the one striker, but the experiment to play first Tammy Abraham and then Rashford alongside Jamie Vardy against Germany on Friday night has been deemed a success.

“Everybody saw that system and what it allowed us to do the other night and what it might allow us to do moving forward,” said Southgate. “We have some flexibility in what we can do because we’ve got different players to come back into the team and into the squad, but certainly I like the idea that we can get two forwards on the pitch.

“Not so many teams do that these days and it’s not a problem that defenders have to face so often which can give you something that causes an opposition a fresh challenge.”

Rashford, for one, is all for it. “Playing in a two is easier,” he said. “It’s just about understanding each other’s games and building those relationships, which you can do off the pitch as well. So the more we do it the easier it will be.

“Like anything new, it takes a bit of getting used to. But the more we do it the better we’ll become at it.”
