In an ode to also-rans everywhere, Chance the Rapper spent this week’s Saturday Night Live monologue extolling the virtues of the second-best things, people and places in life.

The exuberant song was spurred by the fact that it was his second time hosting the late-night sketch show (and the first pulling double-duty as both host and musical guest). “To honor my hometown, I’m going to do a song about Chicago, the Second City,” he announced at the top of the show. What followed was a tune that paid homage to Pepsi, Adam Carolla, Redbox and Bing, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s spinoff series Angel.

Read the complete lyrics to the monologue rap below, then press PLAY on the video at the bottom of the post to hear it for yourself.

Now, I love Chicago, the city that fathered me
Called the Second City, but that doesn’t bother me
I’ve gotta tell ya, I think it’s the reverse
‘Cause sometimes, the second-best is better than the first
Sometimes, the second-best is better than the first
Like, I don’t like Google, I use Bing
I like french fries from Burger King
When it comes to Harry Potter, people give me grief
‘Cause I prefer Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief
I only drink Pepsi, never Coca-Cola
Jimmy Kimmel’s fine, but I love Adam Carolla
And Robin Gibb? Favorite Bee Gee
I hate Mario, love Luigi
I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best better
I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best one
I like DMC better than Run
‘Cause I’m the kind of guy that likes the second best, son

Cast member Kyle Mooney then joined Chance, saying he could relate, because he’s from San Diego, “kind of the Second City of California.” And though the host was dubious, Mooney joined in.

Now me and Chance, we live that thug life
‘Cause we like Antz more than Bug’s Life
Sense and Sensibility‘s better than Pride and Prejudice
Never had Nintendo, but I rocked a Sega Genesis
Yo I like Scrappy more than Scooby-Doo
I don’t like Chili’s, but I love Chili’s Too
I like the Clippers, the Nets and the White Sox
I don’t have Netflix, I like Redbox
I use DHL for my overnight shipping
And my favorite Bulls player? Scottie Pippen
I like Hanukkah more than Christmas, and I don’t like islands, but I love isthmuses.

After some debate about whether isthmuses could be considered second-rate islands (“for the purposes of this song, yes,” Mooney argued), the pair went in for the final verses.

Instead of Starbucks, you know what I do?
I go to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or Caribou
Lunchtime, I don’t have to think it over
I skip Chipotle, head to Qdoba
Some people like Mase more than Puffy
I like the show Angel better than Buffy
And my favorite show about ’90s teens
Wasn’t Saved by the Bell, it was California Dreams

Yeah, I’m the kind of guy that likes the second-best better
I think Chicago is better than the rest
I take seconds at dinner and second glances

Chance the Rapper is heading back to Studio 8H.

He’ll serve as both host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live‘s Oct. 26 episode, the show announced Saturday.

The musician fronted the show once before, in Season 44. Eminem was his musical guest. Highlights of that episode included “Come Back, Barack,” a Boyz II Men-style taped piece that urged former President Barack Obama to return to office, and “Sports Announcer,” in which he portrayed a sportscaster forced to cover a Rangers game without even a rudimentary understanding of hockey.

He also served as musical guest two other times, and showed up in a performance when Kanye West was musical guest in Season 41.

Chance the Rapper is currently touring in promotion of his album The Big Day, which was released this summer.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart will host the following SNL episode, which will air on Nov. 2.

Are you excited to learn of Chance the Rapper’s return to the sketch-comedy show? Sound off in the comments!

Mac Miller Funeral: Talented young rapper dead at 26 and THIS song spoke of dying young https://briefnews.eu/mac-miller-funeral-talented-young-rapper-dead-at-26-and-this-song-spoke-of-dying-young/ https://briefnews.eu/mac-miller-funeral-talented-young-rapper-dead-at-26-and-this-song-spoke-of-dying-young/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 06:30:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mac-miller-funeral-talented-young-rapper-dead-at-26-and-this-song-spoke-of-dying-young/

The young star, real name Malcolm James McCormick, dated Ariana Grande until May this year. The pair made a prominent UK appearance together when they were united on-stage at Grande’s One Love Manchester concert in June 2017.

He topped the Us Billboard 200 album chart in 2011 with his debut album Blue Slid Park when he was just 19.

TMZ and other US outlets are reporting that the singer and rapper “was found Friday (today) around noon at his San Fernando Valley home and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

There has been no official statement yet about the cause of death.

TMZ broke the news and added: “Miller died of an apparent overdose.”

The performer had spoken openly about his struggles with a drug combination of promethazine and codeine known as “purple drank” or “lean” which Miller admitted he took to cope with the pressure of his 2012 Macadelic Tour in 2012.

Miller told Complex: “I love lean, it’s great. I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy. I was so f***ed up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same. I was lost.”

The star continued to face his addictions, explore his own frailties and fears, and grapple with concepts of life and death throughout his career, culminating in his very last video for Self Care.

Miller dated Grande for almost two years and after they separated in May he was charged with driving under the influence and hit and run after allegedly crashing into and knocking down a power pole and fleeing the scene with two passengers.

The talented young star had just released his fifth album, Swimming, last month. His was frequently praised for the depth and breath of issues he addressed and the fearless autobiographical nature of his work.

The lead single Self Care featured a video with Miller trapped inside a coffin marked with the words ‘Memento Mori’, which mean ‘Remember death’ but represent the Medieval reflection upon mortality and the transience of life.

The artist is also widely known for his 2014 mixtape Faces which includes the track Funeral. Among the 24 tracks are numerous references to his drug use and meditations on life and death.

The lyrics for the song include:

It’s the last day of my life, Party like it’s the last day of your life

This the motherf***ing last day of my life, Party like it’s the last day of your life

Forever I melt and float away like waves in the ocean, Staring inside of Heaven’s eyes, the gates will never open

I’m smoking on this field of hope, waiting till my deal gets closed, I keep getting hotter but all I seem to feel is cold

22 don’t feel so old but I think I’m 82

Tributes have started to pour in from fellow artists.

Fans have flooded social media, remembering a man who was “more than just Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend.”

Among the heartbroken messages was a poignant reference to those lyrics from his friend Vanilla Gorilla: “LETS ALL SAY A PRAYER TO GOD FOR MAC MiLLER TO GO TO HEAVEN.”

Tom Hardy’s Venom Voice is the Rapper Redman Crossed With…Woody Allen? https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardys-venom-voice-is-the-rapper-redman-crossed-withwoody-allen/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-hardys-venom-voice-is-the-rapper-redman-crossed-withwoody-allen/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 16:37:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-hardys-venom-voice-is-the-rapper-redman-crossed-withwoody-allen/ tom hardy venom voice

When Tom Hardy uttered his first line in the Venom trailer, it was met with a universal “…Huh?” Was Hardy doing his best Terrence Howard impression? Is this what he thought an intrepid journalist sounded like? And mostly, why?

Hardy is the rare kind of actor who seems to hate his own face and voice. And though that has brought him acclaim in the past, in films like Mad Max: Fury Road or The Dark Knight Rises, this is one acting choice that will probably only earn him a few raised eyebrows. But hey, let him tell you about his process. Maybe we’ll come around to it once we read what he has to say about that truly weird voice.

Tom Hardy may be playing a comic book character in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man-adjacent film Venom, but his character’s voice is inspired by some very real people. Namely the rapper Redman, the Irish professional mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, and…Woody Allen?

In an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed the real-life inspirations that went into his dual roles of Eddie Brock and Venom:

“Woody Allen’s tortured neurosis and all the humor that can come from that. Conor McGregor — the überviolence but not all the talking. And Redman out of control, living rent-free in his head.” Those are not details he revealed to the execs at Sony, which is producing the movie. “You don’t say shit like that to the studio,” he says.

Tom Hardy, if bringing up Woody Allen is part of a plan to make you unattractive to us, it’s working. Mostly. That seems to be Hardy’s entire MO: to hide his movie-star good looks as much as possible. While before he relied on masks that covered his entire face or mouth, now he relies on voice imitations of an alleged Hollywood creep, a rapper, and a professional fighter. That’s certainly a…choice. I totally bet that Hardy only signed onto Venom under the impression that he would get to wear a mask the entire time, only to be sorely disappointed — and now this is our punishment.

Ruben Fleischer directs Venom, which also stars Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed, and Woody Harrelson, all probably speaking in normal voices.

Venom opens in theaters on October 5, 2018.

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

'This is Iraq': Rapper decries US legacy in Iraq in bitter parody of Childish Gambino (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/this-is-iraq-rapper-decries-us-legacy-in-iraq-in-bitter-parody-of-childish-gambino-video/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-iraq-rapper-decries-us-legacy-in-iraq-in-bitter-parody-of-childish-gambino-video/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 02:40:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-iraq-rapper-decries-us-legacy-in-iraq-in-bitter-parody-of-childish-gambino-video/ A musical video by an Iraqi rapper calling out the US on its abuses at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere in the war-ravaged country following the 2003 invasion has gone viral, racking up over 500,000 views.

The video was filmed by rapper I-NZ as another parody of Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America.’ While Gambino took on police brutality and racial bias in his acclaimed work, the Iraqi rapper chose to cast the light on the ugly results of the Iraq War, with its well-documented instances of maltreatment and humiliation of detainees by US soldiers. The name of the former US military prison, Abu Ghraib, the video’s supposed set, became synonymous with abuse after harrowing images and accounts of physical and psychological torture within its walls became public in 2004.

‘This is Iraq’ starts with I-NZ, playing a prisoner in a distinctive orange jumpsuit, being forced by two armed “soldiers” to kill an elderly man peacefully playing a musical instrument.

“This represents the transition from old and beautiful to all that is new and ugly as a result of the invasion of your country. This is represented by soldiers who force the country into war and destruction that it did not ask for,” I-NZ told VICE Arabic, describing the scene.

At another point, it shows kneeling detainees apparently being prepared for execution. One of the most memorable images from Abu Ghraib – that of a hooded man standing atop a box in a shabby poncho with his face covered and electrical wires attached to his arms – gets recreated in the video. As I-NZ raps “This is Iraq, look at us blowin’ up, nobody showin’ up, nobody ownin’ up,” soldiers in American-style camo engage in violence in the background and pose for selfies with prisoners.

The rapper, who was born to Iraqi parents and grew up in New Zealand and has never actually been to Iraq in his life, highlights the lack of coverage on the issue and the impunity of foreign forces and local corrupt elites with the line: “They’re immune, this is telly, that’s the news, media blackout, then it’s lights out, keep sniffin’ the tar.” The video also mocks former US President George W Bush for his infamous May 2003 speech, which he delivered under a “Mission Accomplished” banner, and after which the war continued for eight more years, arguably paving the way for the rise of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and for leaving the country in economic and political disarray.

The video was released on July 4, and it has been watched over 500,000 times on YouTube since. Speaking to VICE Arabic, the rapper said that he did not initially plan for it to coincide with the US Independence Day, however, he then decided to speed up the release to draw more attention to the issue.

‘Art is not a crime’: Hundreds protest jailing of Spanish rapper for ‘insulting’ king (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/art-is-not-a-crime-hundreds-protest-jailing-of-spanish-rapper-for-insulting-king-video/ https://briefnews.eu/art-is-not-a-crime-hundreds-protest-jailing-of-spanish-rapper-for-insulting-king-video/#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2018 14:14:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/art-is-not-a-crime-hundreds-protest-jailing-of-spanish-rapper-for-insulting-king-video/

Crowds of protesters gathered in Madrid’s central square to demand the acquittal of Valtonyc, a rapper whose lyrics landed him in jail for insulting the Spanish crown and glorifying terrorism.

Friday evening saw throngs of demonstrators show up at the Puerta del Sol square to show support for Mallorcan artist Jose Miguel Arenas, who goes by the stage name Valtonyc. His three-and-a-half-year prison term for the lyrics was upheld by the Supreme Court earlier this week.

Around 500 people came to the protest with the slogan ‘Freedom of expression without going to prison,’ according to the organizers.

Some activists held pictures of the 24-year-old rapper, with his face pixelated as being censored. Other banners read ‘Freedom expression is not begged, is not negotiated, it’s defended,’ and ‘Art is not a crime.’

Protesters demanded the release of the artist, sent to prison for slandering and threatening King Felipe VI and his family, as well as for praising “not just political objectives, but violent means used by the terrorist organizations and calls for them to be repeated.” Some of the verses in question read “The Bourbons are thieves,” referring to the ruling dynasty, or “Let them be as frightened as a police officer in the Basque Country,” making indirect reference to the formerly armed separatist ETA group in northern Spain.

Valtonyc defended himself in court, saying that he was protected by freedom of expression and that rap music is known for “extreme, provocative, allegorical and symbolic” lyrics. On Friday, demonstrators also called for the acquittal of another rapper, Pablo Hasel, who was sentenced to two years for glorifying terrorism in his songs in 2014.

Following the outcry, the once little-known rapper, Valtonyc, has been included in the line-ups of 30 festivals and concerts in Catalonia, including major Primavera Sound and Sonar in Barcelona, in a show of solidarity with the artist and rejection of the court’s decision.

Opposition cries censorship as Spanish rapper jailed for insulting king & glorifying terrorism https://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/ https://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/#respond Wed, 21 Feb 2018 20:35:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/

The Spanish Supreme Court has upheld a decision to jail a rapper for three and a half years for a song deemed to have glorified terrorism and insulted the crown, sparking a debate about freedom of expression in the country.

The court rejected arguments on Tuesday by little-known rapper Jose Miguel Arenas Beltran, stage name Valtonyc, that his songs were protected by freedom of expression laws, when ratifying a sentence handed down last February.

Among the lyrics deemed criminal were: “Let them be as frightened as a police officer in the Basque Country,” a reference to violence against police officers in the region by the now-disarmed Basque separatist group ETA.

Valtonyc went on to fantasize about the king having “a rendez-vous at the village square, with a noose around his neck.” In another track Valtonyc threatened to kill a Spanish politician and aristocrat involved in a corruption scandal after forcing her to “see how her son lives among rats.”

The court deemed that the Mallorcan rapper’s lyrics constituted “praise, not of political objectives but of the violent means used by the cited terrorist organizations” and upheld his three and a half-year sentence, Valtonyc confirmed the decision on social media.

Leftwing figures from Spain rallied to the rapper’s defense and branded his prosecution as an attack on freedom of expression. “Censoring a book because it speaks of corruption, sending a rapper to jail for a song, or taking down a work of art because it’s uncomfortable. The gag laws of the PP (Partido Popular) are incompatible with a fair and democratic country,” Podemos deputy Irene Montero wrote on twitter.

Writers’ group PEN Català‏ also criticised the decision saying that it “proves Spanish Gag Law is a serious attack on freedom of expression”.

In a statement the group also said that it was “also concerned about the ‘chilling effect’ of this law on artistic expression.”

Internet erupts over black unemployment after Trump’s unlikely feud with rapper Jay-Z https://briefnews.eu/internet-erupts-over-black-unemployment-after-trumps-unlikely-feud-with-rapper-jay-z/ https://briefnews.eu/internet-erupts-over-black-unemployment-after-trumps-unlikely-feud-with-rapper-jay-z/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2018 23:38:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/internet-erupts-over-black-unemployment-after-trumps-unlikely-feud-with-rapper-jay-z/

Donald Trump has lashed out at Jay-Z’s recent remarks about him, telling the rapper that black unemployment has actually dropped under his presidency. Twitter was divided over whether Trump had anything to do with the fall.

“Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

The spat comes after Jay-Z was asked by CNN’s Van Jones whether it was okay for Trump to “say terrible things but put money in our pockets.” The singer said no, “because it’s not about money at the end of the day. Money doesn’t equate to happiness. It doesn’t. That’s missing the whole point.”

Jay-Z, who is married to megastar Beyoncé, is worth an estimated $ 810 million according to Forbes, making him the second-richest hip-hop artist in the US.
Many have taken to Twitter to argue Trump “missed the whole point” on Sunday when he tweeted about black unemployment falling as a result of his policies.

Van Jones himself fired back by saying “someone needs to inform” Trump that he already asked Jay Z whether the black unemployment figures are enough to redeem Trump’s presidency, to which the singer responded with a “powerful” answer.

Others said the unemployment figures, reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) earlier this month, had nothing to do with Trump at all, instead crediting his predecessor Barack Obama. Several anti-Trump Twitter handles used the exchange to accuse the US president of “trying to take credit” for Obama’s work.

Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York’s 5th Congressional District also chimed in, saying black unemployment remains “unacceptably high” and that “standing on Obama’s laurels don’t reverse Trump’s harmful comments about people of color.”

One Yale Law School JD claimed Trump was asking the nation to “lie” to Jay-Z by “informing” him that black unemployment has dropped under the president’s tenure. “What policy has he even enacted that could have accomplished this?” Darren Hutchinson wrote.

Meanwhile, another Twitter user Andrea Light called out Trump for having the “least diversified” cabinet in modern times. “How many black people have you employed in high paying positions in the White House?” she asked.

However, Trump’s supporters also took to Twitter to cheer the president and lambast Jay-Z.

Pro-Trump Twitter user @Lrihendry told Jay-Z to “stick to rapping” and to “leave the business of running America to the man who knows what he’s doing – President Donald J. Trump.”

Former Sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin and conservative political commentator, David A. Clarke, Jr., touted the success of Trump’s employment policies, while also disregarding Jay-Z’s opinions altogether. “CNN asking Jay-Z for political commentary is akin to asking Sen. Mitch McConnell for commentary on rap music,” he wrote.

Blogger JaVonni Brustow called Jay-Z’s remark to CNN the “dumbest remark of the year so far and worse than s***holes,” referencing Trump’s alleged remark about Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations.

Others noted the irony of Jay-Z’s remark that it’s “not about money,” as tickets to the singer’s concerts carry a hefty price tag.

The black unemployment rate cited by Trump came after the BLS revealed data earlier this month showing it had dropped to 6.8 percent, the lowest level since the government began tracking such data in 1972.
