  • The death count from a rapidly growing Northern California wildfire rose to five Saturday.
  • Two young children and their great-grandmother who had been unaccounted for were confirmed dead.
  • They were among more than a dozen people reported missing after the furious wind-driven blaze took residents by surprise and leveled several neighborhoods.
  • Two firefighters were also killed in the blaze, including a bulldozer operator who was helping clear vegetation in the wildfire’s path.

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — The death count from a rapidly growing Northern California wildfire rose to five Saturday after two young children and their great-grandmother who had been unaccounted for were confirmed dead.

“My babies are dead,” Sherry Bledsoe said through tears after she and family members met with Shasta County sheriff’s deputies.

Tommy Pallotta and Femke Wolting

More Human Than Human comes along at a time when perhaps no reminder is necessary: leaving life to bots—whether that means machine learning, artificial intelligence, genuine human-like androids, etc.—might get messy for us humans. Westworld gives us one version of a sentient-machine uprising every Sunday, and news cycles like those involving Cambridge Analytica and Facebook provide gentler reminders that creating increasingly intelligent tech platforms can lead to unwanted manipulation and consequences right now.

But the new documentary (which debuted at South by Southwest and plays at the acclaimed Hot Docs Festival in Toronto this week) doesn’t set out to paint a picture of some futuristic hellscape. Instead, it wants viewers to pause for a second to consider the forever promise of technology. “We grew up in the shadow of the space program, really believing that tech was going to make our lives better,” co-director Tommy Pallotta told Ars. “For five decades, we’ve seen this promise that tech would create more leisure time for us [and] that it’ll make all our lives better. It’s kind of insane we’re still sold the same promise, but what do we really have to show for it?”

Beijing is rapidly demolishing its own city, and 27,000 billboards are next https://briefnews.eu/beijing-is-rapidly-demolishing-its-own-city-and-27000-billboards-are-next/ https://briefnews.eu/beijing-is-rapidly-demolishing-its-own-city-and-27000-billboards-are-next/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2017 08:40:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beijing-is-rapidly-demolishing-its-own-city-and-27000-billboards-are-next/ Beijing billboardREUTERS/Stringer

  • Beijing has deemed 27,000 signs across the city illegal, and intends to remove them all by the end of 2017.
  • This campaign aims to beautify the city’s skyline.
  • The removals come as Beijing also battles to demolish the homes of thousands of rural migrants and workers around the city.

Beijing is trying to beautify its skyline by demolishing 27,000 billboards, signs, and logos across the city.

The removals ramped up in November, the same time mass evictions began across Beijing, which saw tens of thousands of locals — mostly “low-end population” migrants and workers — being kicked out of their homes and out of the city altogether. The evictions are officially part of a 40-day safety campaign, however waves of demolitions have raised suspicion the city is trying to redesign and gentrify itself.

The city’s new skyline campaign, which was initially set out in September, aims to “purify the city space and to create a beautiful skyline.”

So far, a third of the 27,000 newly illegal signs have been removed.

Beijing is currently targeting “knife signs,” logos, and billboards that sit above a building’s edge and cut into the sky.

Other signs cannot be more than three stories high, longer than five feet, use reflective materials or external lighting, according to South China Morning Post. Buildings taller than three stories are also limited to only have the building’s name displayed on its roof.

It’s not just private businesses being targeted. The Bank of Beijing and a police station had signs removed, the South China Morning Post reported, while hospitals, luxury hotels, internet companies, state-owned enterprises, and government organizations have also been affected, according to Caixin.

A hotline has also been set up for individuals to report illegal billboards.

New blood test could rapidly detect if you've had a heart attack https://briefnews.eu/new-blood-test-could-rapidly-detect-if-youve-had-a-heart-attack/ https://briefnews.eu/new-blood-test-could-rapidly-detect-if-youve-had-a-heart-attack/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 22:03:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-blood-test-could-rapidly-detect-if-youve-had-a-heart-attack/

More than two-thirds of people who go to A&E with chest pain have not had a heart attack.

At present, all of these patients undergo a blood test when they arrive at A&E and again three hours later which is designed to detect damage to the heart muscle.

The test works by analysing biomarkers, including cardiac troponin. Those with undetectable levels of cardiac troponin are classified as low risk and are discharged from hospital.

However, up to 85 per cent of patients fall into an intermediate risk group, requiring an overnight stay and further blood tests.

Scientists from King’s College London have now developed a new test that looks for another biomarker – cardiac myosin-binding protein C (cMyC) – which is found to be even more sensitive at detecting damage to the heart muscle.

Levels of cMyC in the blood increase more rapidly after a heart attack, and to a higher extent, than troponin.

The new test – which could be rolled out across the NHS in the next five years – can therefore lead to a much more rapid diagnosis.

It enables those not suffering a heart attack to be sent home sooner, and may also pick up heart attacks not detected by the current test.

The latest study on more than 2,000 people at hospitals in Switzerland, Italy and Spain was funded by charity the British Heart Foundation and published in the journal Circulation.

Compared to the troponin test, the new test doubled the number of patients found not to be having a heart attack.

Experts calculated that just one UK hospital – St Thomas’ in London, which carries out 7,800 heart attack tests each year – could save £800,000 a year by reducing admissions and freeing up beds.

Across the entire NHS, the figure will be much higher, although the charity could not give an estimate of how much in total could be saved.

Mike Marber, professor of cardiology at King’s College London and head of the UK arm of the research, said: “We’ve shown that this test is not only just as good as the current test for working out who has had a heart attack, but it’s also much better at working out who hasn’t.”

Dr Tom Kaier, one of the lead researchers, said the new test could quickly “reassure” thousands of patients that they are fine and would help “free up valuable hospital beds in A&E departments and wards across the country.”

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani of the British Heart Foundation said more research was needed before the current test could be replaced.

But he added: “Big heart attacks are often easy to diagnose with an ECG but smaller heart attacks, which are more common and also life-threatening, are more challenging.”

Good Morning Britain viewers ‘rapidly’ TURN OFF over gruesome segment ‘Bang out of order!’ https://briefnews.eu/good-morning-britain-viewers-rapidly-turn-off-over-gruesome-segment-bang-out-of-order/ https://briefnews.eu/good-morning-britain-viewers-rapidly-turn-off-over-gruesome-segment-bang-out-of-order/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 08:37:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/good-morning-britain-viewers-rapidly-turn-off-over-gruesome-segment-bang-out-of-order/

For the second time this week, spiders invaded the Good Morning Britain studio with hopes to cure audiences from arachnophobia.

Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan, who was visibly trembling, managed to hold a tarantula while he was joined by mother-of-three Michelle, who conquered her fears to let a speedy house spider run up and down her arm.

However, GMB fans struggled to feel the benefits and were simply left reeling as a collection of humungous, eight-legged beasts boomed out of television screens up and down the country.

“@GMB can’t even watch GMB this morning as I have a severe fear of spiders and can’t even look at them without freaking out!!!!” tweeted one angry audience member, which was followed by: “@GMB bang out of order with the spider this a.m AGAIN.”

A third yelled: “Rapidly turning off @GMB due to long close up shots of a house spider.”

One more cried: “Sorry, had to turn over, that spider is worse than Piers,” before this particularly unimpressed critic snapped: “What was the point of the whole spider thing? Some people have a fear of spiders others don’t. Who cares. #gmb.”

Although, others commended Michelle for her “heroism”, with one fan posting: “Hats off to this woman on @GMB there’s no f**king WAY you’d see me with a spider in my hand.”

Matters only got worse when host Ben Shephard revealed that one of the furry guests had escaped.

“It’s been let loose,” he smirked.

Earlier this week, Susanna Reid ran off Good Morning Britain after Piers Morgan threatened her with a giant tarantula.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

Vancouver’s mortgages are rapidly deteriorating in quality https://briefnews.eu/vancouvers-mortgages-are-rapidly-deteriorating-in-quality/ https://briefnews.eu/vancouvers-mortgages-are-rapidly-deteriorating-in-quality/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 23:40:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vancouvers-mortgages-are-rapidly-deteriorating-in-quality/ Vancouver housingReuters/Reuters Photographer

Vancouver real estate may be showing signs of exhaustion. According to the Bank of Canada (BoC) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the quality of mortgages are showing increasing signs of quality deterioration. Over the past year this trend has accelerated, leaving more homeowners vulnerable to financial ruins in the event of a minor correction.

A Dangerous Combination For Mortgages

High-ratio mortgages combined with high loan-to-income ratios are a dangerous combination for homeowners. A high-ratio mortgage is one where less than 20% is placed as a down payment, and the owner has as little as 5% equity in the home. Chances of these mortgages going underwater (i.e. the owner ending up with negative equity in the home) are already pretty high.

This becomes even more of an issue when paired with a high loan-to-income ratio. That’s the ratio of the size of the mortgage (the loan) to your gross annual salary (income). The higher the loan-to-income ratio, the harder it is to keep up with payments. This becomes doubly dangerous with even a slight market correction, since rates would rise. Rising rates can easily break a stretched borrower’s ability to keep up with payments. If their mortgage is underwater, and they are having a tough time paying the bills, they’re in for trouble. Borrowers like this will need to pay to unload their home. Kind of tricky since they’ve already maxed out on payments in the first place.

Vancouver’s Risky Mortgages

The BoC and the MoF data shows that the quality of high-ratio loans in Vancouver is quickly deteriorating. The fiscal year ending in 3Q of 2016 saw high-ratio mortgages with an average LTI higher than 350%, in more than 75% of postal codes in Vancouver. This is an 11% increase from the period prior, which is very strong growth. Unfortunately, this isn’t the good kind of growth.

The Loan-To-Income Ratio Is Getting Worse

These subprime loans are actually getting worse in Vancouver. 36% of postal codes saw the average loan-to-income ratio increase from the year prior. V5X, known to humans as South Vancouver, saw the largest increase. The ratio jumped from insignificant numbers, to an average high-ratio loan-to-income of over 450% – the highest measure the BoC gives. Only three other area codes scored this high, V4C (Delta Northeast), V5J (South Slope), and V6V (mostly farmland in Richmond). In the event of a correction these areas will likely be impacted the most.

VancouverBetter Dwelling

The BoC’s concerns are not just limited to Vancouver, they previously noted that Canadians across the country are increasingly stretching themselves thin to pursue homeownership. Rapidly increasing prices are great for homeowner equity, but high leverage borrowers should be mindful of the risks. Bottomline, always stay within your budget. If you can’t afford to buy now, renting isn’t the end of the world.

Editor’s Note: This is a separate issue from low income, to high priced homes. Foreign buyers, and the self-employed often have a low level of declared income in Canada. However, they are required to put more than 35% down when buying a home, meaning by definition these people are not in either of those groups.

Syrian Army rapidly advancing on UK/US Special Forces base – reports https://briefnews.eu/syrian-army-rapidly-advancing-on-ukus-special-forces-base-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/syrian-army-rapidly-advancing-on-ukus-special-forces-base-reports/#respond Tue, 16 May 2017 10:26:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/syrian-army-rapidly-advancing-on-ukus-special-forces-base-reports/

Syrian government forces accompanied by Iranian and Hezbollah fighters are within 15 miles (24km) of a joint US/UK Special Forces base, sparking fears of a confrontation.

British SAS troops were photographed at the heavily-fortified base at al-Tanf in 2016 and are thought to be operating alongside units from the US military, including in a training role.

“The Iranians are the ones promoting their movement towards al-Tanf, using the slogan Fighting The Grand Satan i.e. the US and the international coalition,” Mozahem al-Saloum, a spokesman for the al-Tanf-based Free Syrian Army brigade told the Telegraph.

The area is of substantial strategic importance to the regime, as controlling it would help re-establish a road link with Iraq to the south.

In June 2016, Russian jets, providing top cover for the Syrian military, bombed the base. No casualties were reported.

In April, the base reportedly came under attack from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The UK government refused to comment in line with its long standing policy relating to Special Forces operations.

The US has reportedly warned against further encroachment on the base and it remains unclear how foreign troops would respond to contact with Syrian forces.

The precise disposition and number of UK forces in unknown though they are likely to be either British Army personnel from 22 SAS or Royal Marines from the SBS – Britain’s so-called ‘Tier 1’ operators.

Other units that operate under the same ‘no comment’ umbrella include the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), formerly the 1st Battalion of The Parachute Regiment, which supplies additional troops to SF operations and the shadowy Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR), which provides expert close surveillance capabilities.

Rapidly Deflating Pikachu Rushed To Safety By Small Horde Of Suited Men https://briefnews.eu/rapidly-deflating-pikachu-rushed-to-safety-by-small-horde-of-suited-men/ https://briefnews.eu/rapidly-deflating-pikachu-rushed-to-safety-by-small-horde-of-suited-men/#respond Sat, 06 May 2017 10:52:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rapidly-deflating-pikachu-rushed-to-safety-by-small-horde-of-suited-men/

Tragedy struck in mid-dance number during the Pokemon World Festival in Incheon, South Korea earlier this week, as the lead Pikachu sprung a leak during “You Can’t Stop The Beat.” Fortunately an elite squad of suited men was standing by.

The incident occurs at the 1:00 mark in the video below, posted by YouTube user Green Lime and shared via The Verge. As the Pikachu slowly melts in front of a horrified (amused) crowd, the suits leap into action, led by a man in a long-sleeve t-shirt.

The reasons behind the Pikachu’s deflation are unclear, but I strongly suspect it has something to do with “Uptown Funk.”

The suited men attempted to rehabilitate the injured pocket monster and return him to the wild at around 4:35.

But as the song ended, so did the hopes of the saggiest little Pikachu.
