The Italian boss took training this morning then met club chiefs for talks with tensions around Vicarage Road high. The Hornets board had been made aware that a number of players would try to leave if Mazzarri remained in charge. Mazzarri still hasn’t learnt English – he has continued to speak Italian in his press conferences – and that in itself has annoyed players. That, coupled with a lack of days off, has left the squad calling for Mazzarri to go. Mazarri joined Watford in June having previously been in charge of Inter Milan. He has managed 40 games, winning 12, drawing seven and losing 21. The 55-year-old signed a three-year deal last year – but will leave after just one campaign. Chairman Scott Duxbury released a statement this afternoon which read: “After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down from his position as the club’s head coach after the final game of the 2016/17 season. “We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.” Former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has been chalked up as the bookies’ early favourite to replace him. Alan Pardew, Nigel Pearson (both 8/1) and Kenny Jackett (12/1) are also in the running. There’s also the possibility Watford could move for Hull boss Marco Silva. Sceptics slammed the decision to appoint Silva in January but he impressed during his five-month spell in charge of Hull. Watford are 16th in the Premier League having lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Monday. They have taken just three points from a possible 21. Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores was sacked by Watford last summer – despite guiding the club to the FA Cup semi-finals and comfortably retaining their status in the top division. Slavisa Jokanovic departed a year earlier after leading Watford into the Premier League. Mazzarri was the seventh Watford manager hired by the Pozzo family since they bought the club in 2012. The Italian was sacked nine months after winning the Premier League title and, during an interview on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, suggested someone behind the scenes could have been to blame. That led many to speculate that Shakespeare – the former assistant who replaced him as manager – was the man responsible. But on the eve of their Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Atletico Madrid, Shakespeare stopped short of categorically denying he was involved in the sacking, instead insisting he can sleep easy at night. “Free speech is there for anybody, I don’t have a problem with it,” he said. “I’m quite comfortable with my own conscience, so I can’t do anything about that. “I was at the Under-23s last night but I have been filled in about it [the interview with Ranieri. “I have seen clips of it. I think Claudio was in good humour and came across as I know him, but from my first interview, I spoke to him and he thanked me for my time. “I thanked him and there has never been any falling out. It’s football and I’m glad to see that he is enjoying his football again.” “I think [in the interview] he said, ‘maybe’ [it was someone behind the scenes who pushed for Ranieri to be sacked], that’s the quote that I heard this morning. But my stance is still the same. We never had a falling out. “I haven’t seen the interview live, but I think I have answered the question. Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel added: “I haven’t seen his interview. I was out for dinner with family when the match was on. We have always had the utmost respect for Claudio and what he achieved was unbelievable. “It was a shame how things ended but we now just want to save ourselves in the Champions League.” Speaking in public for the first time since his sacking while a guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Ranieri refused to name the people he was referring to but dismissed rumours the players stuck the knife in. “Maybe it was someone behind me,” said Ranieri. “I had a little problem the year before and we won the Premier League title. Maybe this year, when we lose, these people push a little more. “I don’t want to tell [who I’m talking about]. I’m a serious man, a loyal man. What I had to say, I said face-to-face. “But I don’t believe rumours the players spoke to the Leicester owners about sacking me. The players got to experience something totally different. In pre-season they played against big teams, went all over the world. I don’t believe the players killed me.” Ranieri believes Leicester had finally turned the corner in their struggling season his side put in a strong performance against Sevilla in the Champions League last-16 first leg, despite losing 2-1. “The turning point was the Sevilla match,” said Ranieri. “So it was very surprising and very disappointing to find out I was sacked.” The Daily Express has learned how an unknown male driver deliberately slammed on the brakes in front of the distinctive white vehicle of Rebekah Vardy while their children Sofia, two, and baby Finley, just two months, were strapped in the back of the vehicle. Rebekah swerved around the car, whose driver gesticulated wildly from behind the wheel, shouting, “****ing Vardy!” Understandably emotional, she managed to complete her journey before ringing friends in tears to tell them what had just happened. The incident occurred close to the family’s home on the same day erroneous reports had emerged suggesting Vardy was at a meeting of senior players in Seville that had ultimately led to the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. Yesterday, Leicester ace Vardy admitted the subsequent trauma that has been affecting his family in the last few weeks, both in real life and online, has been “terrifying”. Speaking at England’s training headquarters at St George’s Park ahead of the friendly in Germany tomorrow, he said: “I was supposed to be personally involved in a meeting when I was actually sat in anti-doping for three hours. “But of course the story is out there and people pick it up and jump on it and suddenly you’re getting death threats about your family, kids, everything. “I try just to get on with it, but when people are trying to cut your missus up while she’s driving along, with the kids in the back of the car, it is terrifying.” The couple decided against getting the police involved in the incident. “People get cut up but if there’s no cameras you’re screwed,” Vardy continued. “Then on social media, you name it – walking down the street. All that can happen is they get banned on Twitter.” Vardy was at pains to point out he did not think it was specifically Leicester fans behind the incident involving his wife or the death threats. Indeed, it seems it was only the fact the life of his family had physically been threatened, together with the timing of the vehicle incident, that has forced him to speak out on this occasion. “I get death threats every week,” he said. “Football fans don’t seem to like me that much. I get abuse at every stadium I turn up at. You are always going to get stick from fans. It is part and parcel of football. “I’m one that carries on and winds them up a bit. Do I enjoy it? Yeah, it’s just me. “I couldn’t tell you why I get it, but it’s part of the game. I am not really fussed about it. It’s fine by me.” Leicester ended their five-game losing streak in the Premier League with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Liverpool in Shakespeare’s first game in charge since Claudio Ranieri’s sacking. Shakespeare, 53, is expected to take charge of the champion’s visit of Hull on Saturday (3pm) as the Leicester board continue their search. “I can’t see why not, but it’s the chairman’s decision,” Simpson said when asked of Shakespeare’s chances of landing the role on a permanent basis. “It’s up to him and he owns the club, he is passionate about the club. “Those decisions are nothing to do with us but, for me, (Shakespeare) has been really good. He is a top coach, a top guy and he has taken it on naturally. “He has kept it simple and told us what he wanted to do and we’ve done that so let’s hope we can carry it on for him.” Simpson also joined Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel and Marc Albrighton in playing down media reports suggesting a player revolt led to Ranieri’s dismissal last Thursday. “It’s not nice to hear that,” the 30-year-old added. “The chairman is his own man and he makes his decisions. All we have to do is play football. “We know we haven’t played how we can – we’re first to admit that – but we have to carry on. Leicester carries on.” TheMailOnline claim the former England boss held secret talks with Leicester representatives last Friday in south-west London following Claudio Ranieri’s controversial sacking. It is claimed the 69-year-old is admired as a long-term successor to Ranieri by Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Hodgson is said to be interested in a return to management following his stint with England and Srivaddhanaprabha apparently sees him as the man to turn Leicester’s disastrous season around. However, Hodgson is not entirely convinced by the idea of taking over at the King Power Stadium. But the Leicester owner is keen to get him on board and is likely to hold further talks in the coming days and weeks with Hodgson in a bid to convince him to take the reins. Craig Shakespeare is likely to remain in interim charge after guiding Leicester to an emphatic 3-1 win over Liverpool last night, but he could just be keeping the seat warm for the arrival of Hodgson. Hodgson said in December: “Football is very much in my blood and very much part of my life. “I want to be involved in football. I feel good. If an offer comes along that I think is the right one for me and for the club, of course I shall be happy to take it. “When I’m not in some way actively involved I feel a part of my life is not being fulfilled.” Leicester began well and looked like a different team to the one which has been seen in the past few weeks. Shinji Okazaki first went close when he forced Simon Mignolet into a fine save with his flying header. Robert Huth then had a free header from a corner but slammed it over the top. Vardy was looking dangerous and he put the Foxes ahead with 30 minutes gone after he collected Marc Albrighton’s pass and slotted into the net. And it got better for Leicester before half-time as Danny Drinkwater fired home a volley from 25-yards. After the break Vardy added his second and Leicester’s third when he got between Lucas and Emre Can and headed home Christian Fuchs’ cross. Liverpool tried to get back into the game and went close when Adam Lallana forced Kasper Schmeichel into a fine save. And the Reds found a goal when Philippe Coutinho side-footed home from 15-yards out. But it proved to be a consolation as Leicester secured a crucial three points. Just 48 hours before the EFL Cup final, the Manchester United manager wore the initials “CR” on his top in his press conference yesterday in support of Claudio Ranieri, before launching his scathing attack on the Foxes squad, many of who signed lucrative new contracts after lifting the Premier League championship last season. Jose Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in similar circumstances last season amid reports of a players’ revolt but said his experience was “peanuts” compared to Leicester’s treatment of the man who led them to the most unexpected title in football history last season. He said: “Probably the season started with the typical selfishness of others, people thinking about new contracts, people thinking about more money, people thinking about leaving and forgetting who helped them to reach a certain level. “This is not just football, it’s a bit of our world. Some principles are going away a little bit. I’m really sorry about it but I lived a similar experience. “I thought last season when I was sacked as a champion it was a giant negative thing, now I realise it was peanuts to what happened with Claudio. “If some of the stories I am reading are true, or are a little bit true, it’s hard to find words to justify that.” Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was the early favourite to replace his fellow Italian, with former Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, and ex-England supremo Roy Hodgson also on Leicester’s radar, along with Huddersfield’s up and coming boss David Wagner. Ranieri’s former assistant Craig Shakespeare will be in caretaker charge for the visit of Liverpool on Monday night – and he has also thrown his hat into the ring for the job. “Do I think I could do the job? Yes,” said Shakespeare. “Does it faze me? No. Claudio is held in respect by supporters and quite rightly so. We need them to get behind the team and all pull together. “I can’t tell fans how they should behave. The players are very hurt and they will be disappointed like everybody else that the manger has lost his job.” Ranieri issued a statement in which he said: “Yesterday my dream died. After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always. Sadly this was not to be. “I wish to thank my wife Rosanna and all my family for their never ending support during my time at Leicester.” Mourinho added: “My shirt with the his [CR] initials is my little my homage to somebody who who wrote the most beautiful history of the Premier League. He was somebody who deserved to have the stadium named after him but he has been sacked.” Mourinho was not so charitable when replacing Ranieri when he was sacked by Chelsea in 2004. He said back then: ““It is really not my fault if he was considered a loser at Chelsea.” And he went further four years later, adding: “Ranieri…has the mentality of someone who doesn’t need to win. He is almost 70 years old. He has won a Supercup and another small trophy and he is too old to change his mentality. “He’s old and he hasn’t won anything. I studied Italian five hours a day for many months to ensure I could communicate with the players, media and fans. Ranieri had been in England for five years and still struggled to say ‘good morning’ and ‘good afternoon’.” And now the Italian has had his say in an emotional statement. “Yesterday my dream died,” Ranieri said. “After the euphoria of last season and being crowned Premier League champions all I dreamt of was staying with Leicester City, the club I love, for always. “Sadly this was not to be. “I wish to thank my wife Rosanna and all my family for their never ending support during my time at Leicester. “My thanks go to Paolo and Andrea who accompanied me on this wonderful journey. To Steve Kutner and Franco Granello for bringing me the opportunity to become a Champion. “Mostly I have to thank Leicester City Football Club. The adventure was amazing and will live with me forever. “Thank you to all the journalists and the media who came with us and enjoyed reporting on the greatest story in football. “My heartfelt thanks to everybody at the Club, all the players, the staff, everybody who was there and was part of what we achieved. “But mostly to the supporters. You took me into your hearts from day one and loved me. I love you too. No one can ever take away what we together have achieved, and I hope you think about it and smile every day the way I always will. “It was a time of wonderfulness and happiness that I will never forget. It’s been a pleasure and an honour to be a Champion with all of you.” Leicester beat the 5,000-1 odds to win the Premier League title last year but are sliding towards the Championship and could be bottom of the table by the time they play on Monday. Craig Shakespeare has been placed in temporary charge and insists the players did not get Ranieri the boot, “I am not aware of any senior players going to the owners (to express their frustration at results). That is news to me. A lot of it has been speculation, no foundation,” he said. “I’ve not had one problem with the players. There was a lot of frustration because of the results but he (Ranieri) had not lost the dressing room.” But he is confident of turning the club’s fortunes for the job. “Confidence can go very quickly but it can come back very quickly. My aim is to restore that confidence quickly,” he said.
