The three-year-old unleashed a brilliant burst of acceleration to win the Eskimo Prince Stakes first-up then was ridden upside down in the Hobartville Stakes and still won comfortably.
He has drawn barrier four in the Randwick Guineas and with his electric turn of foot, he is the one to beat.

Kementari led home Pierata, D’Argento, Trapeze Artist and Ace High and this quintet renew their rivalry in the Randwick Guineas. Kementari was just too good for his rivals, settling on speed then taking control of the race from the turn to win decisively. Pierata and D’Argento both ran on well, closing on the winner late and they will get their chance over 1600m. Trapeze Artist led and held on well while Ace High held his ground to finish a close fifth. Siege Of Quebec (ninth) and Capital Gain (10th) need to improve considerably to be in the finish on Saturday.
AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS (1600m), Flemington, March 4
Peaceful State is on the quick back-up after running very well for second at Group 1 level in the Australian Guineas at Flemington Saturday. Peaceful State settled midfield following eventual winner Grunt into the race from the turn. Peaceful State loomed up to win at the 100m but Grunt held him off for a narrow win.
THE TRAINERS
Since the Randwick Guineas was introduced in 2006, replacing the Canterbury Guineas (1900m), John Hawkes is the only trainer to win the three-year-old classic twice. Hawkes prepared Mentality in 2007 and last year he was co-trainer with his sons Wayne and Michael of Inference. In Saturday’s Randwick Guineas, the only trainer with a runner to have won the classic is James Cummings, who prepares favourite Kementari. Cummings won the race with Hallowed Crown in 2015.
THE JOCKEYS
There are five jockeys with rides in Saturday’s race who already have their names on the honour roll. Jay Ford (Tangled) won on Hotel Grand (2006), Brad Rawiller (Peaceful Stakes) rode Weekend Hussler (2008), Brenton Avdulla (Kaonic) partnered Ilovethiscity (2011), Hugh Bowman (D’Argento) won on Hallowed Crown (2015) and Christian Reith (Siege Of Quebec) scored on Le Romain (2016).
THE SPEED MAP
Trapeze Artist looks the only leader but given he is a query at 1600m, perhaps he will be ridden more conservatively early. His career-best effort winning the Golden Rose came when he was settled off the speed. If Trapeze Artist does lead, he should be able to control tempo and turn this into a sprint home. If he doesn’t lead, then Condor or perhaps Siege Of Quebec will roll forward and take up the front-running role. Kementari has drawn gate four and should be able to settle just in behind the leaders with the run of the race.
THE FAVOURITES
Favourites won four of the first six renewals of the Randwick Guineas but none have saluted since Ilovethiscity at $ 1.90 in 2011. There has been some boilover results in this race including Metal Bender ($ 21) in 2009 and Le Romain ($ 21) in 2016.
THE SPECIALIST
Kaonic has raced once at Randwick for a very impressive win over the 1600m course in the spring. He is unbeaten in two starts over the “mile”. Ace High, Kementari, Pierata, D’Argento and Tangmere have all won races at Randwick, while Age Of Fire, Sully, Capital Gain and Condor have won at 1600m.
AND THE VERDICT IS …
Kementari unleashed a brilliant burst of acceleration to win the Eskimo Prince Stakes first-up then was ridden upside down in the Hobartville Stakes and still won comfortably. He sat outside the leader then forged clear at Rosehill to win with authority. This talented colt has drawn barrier four, should settle in the front half of the field with the run of the race. It won’t matter to Kementari what the tempo is as this colt relaxes well for jockey Glyn Schofield and his turn of foot is electric. He ticks all the boxes.
Pierata is the danger. He was having his first start in six weeks in the Hobartville Stakes when he came from midfield and took ground off Kementari late when beaten a length into second place. Pierata will be fitter, he has drawn the rails barrier and the 1600m should be ideal. He is the danger.
Kaonic and D’Argento, the Chris Waller-trained duo, are definite chances. Kaonic has been a little disappointing in his two runs back but he is up to his right trip now and can improve sharply. He is over the odds. D’Argento was finishing strongly late for third in the Hobartville and he will also appreciate the extra trip. The stablemates need this race to be run at a solid tempo to have their best chance of winning.
Trapeze Artist is third-up and it is worth remembering his two best wins, the Black Opal Stakes and Golden Rose, have come at the same stage of previous preparations.
Ace High is a dual Group 1 winner and getting out to his right distance range now. Peaceful State comes off a Group 1 placing last week, while Siege Of Quebec, Condor and Tangmere can run competitively at big odds.

R1: ANZ BLOODSTOCK NEWS HCP (1100m) 12.40pm
OVERVIEW:Calculated is a very good horse in the making but he is first-up over 1100m and shouldering 60.5kg. This is short of his best but I still expect this classy colt to be charging home. Awesome Pluck is another loaded with potential and is better suited over the short course than Calculated. However, Awesome Pluck has drawn a little awkwardly in barrier eight and it was a wide barrier that brought him undone at Warwick Farm during the winter. He resumes on Saturday off a very good Rosehill barrier trial win last week and although he is short enough at $ 2.80, I have him on top over Calculated. Savatiano has the race fitness on her side and is better suited on a firm track. The big watch is From Within, who is resuming for a new stable but looked very sharp in her Randwick trial win.
SPEED MAP: There isn’t a lot of early speed here and From Within should be able to find the lead from her good draw while Awesome Pluck has the opportunity to work across and settle outside the filly. This pair can control the tempo and make it hard for the backmarkers to catch them.
DID YOU KNOW:From Within, a former stablemate of Calculated, will wear a cross-over nose band and ear muffs for the first time.
BETTING STRATEGY: Awesome Pluckto win, with a small saver on From Within.
MARKET MOVERS: Calculated $ 2.80-$ 2.60 ($ 1,900 @ $ 2.60); Awesome Pluck $ 2.80 unchanged ($ 500 @ $ 2.80 TWICE, $ 400 @ $ 2.80)
R2: TAB HIGHWAY HCP (1000m) 1.20pm
OVERVIEW: Port Macquarie trainer Jenny Graham has two entries at the Randwick meeting and could easily leave after the second with a stable brace from Awesome Pluck in the opener and Victorem in the TAB Highway. Victorem is also resuming on Saturday but showed plenty of ability with dominant wins at Kempsey and Grafton during winter. He has had two trials to prepare for his return including an eye-catching effort to finish second behind Group 1 winner Music Magnate at Rosehill last week. Victorem will settle off-speed but has a powerful finishing surge. Takookacod had absolutely no luck in Volpe’s TAB Highway at Rosehill last start but is well drawn, should get the right run and be very competitive. All Stand is in great form and watch for the improving Buddy Honest to run well at double figure odds.
SPEED MAP: This field is loaded with on-pacers and they should fly over the 1000m. The likes of All Stand, Buddy Honest, Jazee Nic, Leica’s Lass, Miss Fisher and Muzzleburst have good early speed so this race could be set up for the swoopers.
DID YOU KNOW: Blaike McDougall, rider of Takookacod, won’t be able to claim his full 2kg allowance but the sprinter will carry 52kg.
BETTING STRATEGY: Victoremto win.
MARKET MOVERS: Victorem $ 4-$ 2.20 ($ 400 @ $ 4, $ 600 @ $ 3.60, $ 400 @ $ 3.60, $ 650 @ $ 3.20, $ 400 @ $ 2.90, $ 1,000 @ $ 2.70, $ 1,000 @ $ 2.50, $ 700 @ $ 2.50, $ 300 @ $ 2.50, $ 1,000 @ $ 2.25, $ 300 @ $ 2.25, $ 900 @ $ 2.20)
R3: CHRISTMAS CUP (2400m) 1.55pm
OVERVIEW: Broadside is into $ 1.70 but it is impossible to tip against him tomorrow. He was having his first run in more than two months when he dominated his rivals in the Listed ATC Cup over 2000m at Rosehill two weeks ago. He will strip even fitter today and is ready to go out to 2400m. Vassal won at Rosehill over 2400m two starts back carrying 60kg and drops to the 53kg limit on Saturday. He can mix his form but the big weight drop brings him into contention. Prince Cheri likes his races spaced and his recent form is sound. Green Sweet was first-up after a long spell in the ATC Cup when fifth to Broadside and he did win the Albury Cup at his second run back last preparation. He is getting to 2400m quickly this campaign, a staying trip he has not been tested at previously.
SPEED MAP: The outside barrier gives Josh Parr options on Broadside. There is some speed drawn underneath with Green Sweet, Shalmaneser and Hundred likely to roll forward. Parr can cruise over on Broadside and position the favourite where he is comfortable.
DID YOU KNOW: Broadside, who began his race career in New Zealand, has never won two races in succession in Australia.
BETTING STRATEGY: Broadside to win.
MARKET MOVERS: Broadside $ 1.75-$ 1.70; Green Sweet $ 13-$ 9.50
R4: INGLIS NURSERY (1000m) 2.30pm
OVERVIEW: This is a difficult race to assess — a big field of 14 including five first starters, and various formlines clashing from Sydney, NSW provincial and country, and Melbourne. I am leaning to one of the unraced youngsters, Irish Bet from the John O’Shea stable. Irish Bet was a brilliant winner of a Warwick Farm barrier trial earlier this month where he was strong through the line. He looks a natural runner. Let Me Sleep On It is over the odds at $ 17. She was three-wide without cover on debut, ran wide on the home turn but regained balance and closed to within a length when second at Gosford. Better suited on the bigger Randwick track and the inside gate is a huge advantage. Miss Invincible led for a long way on debut at Rosehill over 1100m, the shorter trip is in her favour but gate 13 is a big leveller. The Tony McEvoy-trained duo of Sanctimonious and Logan River were placed on debut on a heavy track at Sandown but they have both drawn off the track.
SPEED MAP: Miss Invincible has brilliant early pace but can she cross from her wide barrier? There is plenty of speed drawn underneath her ensuring this is a fast-run 1000m.
DID YOU KNOW: The training partnership of Peter and Paul Snowden, and Melbourne’s Tony McEvoy are the leading two-year-old stables this season with four wins each. The Snowden’s are represented by Cosimo while McEvoy is starting stablemates Sanctimonious and Logan River.
BETTING STRATEGY: Irish Bet to win and something on Let Me Sleep On It each way.
MARKET MOVERS: Logan River $ 11-$ 9 ($ 500 @ $ 11, $ 200 @ $ 9.50)
R5: CATANACH’S HCP (1200m) 3.05pm
OVERVIEW: Sugar Bella made a real statement with her comeback Canterbury win at a night meeting earlier this month, unleashing from back in the field and putting nearly three lengths on her rivals. She was having her first start in 16 months and has improved her race record to three wins from four starts. Although this is a significant rise in grade, she is a very promising mare. Secret Trial was doing her best work on the line when fourth to Don’t Tease Me when resuming over the Rosehill 1100m. Fitter now and drawn to get the gun run. Machinegun Jubs wasn’t suited when the track was downgraded to heavy at Rosehill but she was very game winning at that track two starts back. In Times Of War is never far away but finds it hard to win.
SPEED MAP: Purrari, resuming off a long spell, may lead by default here although Il Mio Destino, Machinegun Jubs and Anatola will settle on speed. Expect a solid tempo.
DID YOU KNOW: Secret Trail has a very good second-up record with three wins and two placings from six attempts.
BETTING STRATEGY: Sugar Bella is probably under the odds at $ 3.60 considering she is confronted by a big rise in grade but she looks a real talent. Back her to win and take a box trifecta 2,3,4,12.
MARKET MOVERS: Sugar Bella $ 4-$ 3.60 ($ 500 @ $ 4, $ 1,250 @ $ 3.60, $ 750 @ $ 3.60)
R6: RIGHT2DRIVE HCP (1600m) 3.40pm
OVERVIEW: Looks a showdown between two in-form gallopers, Sedanzer and Dreamforce. The early betting suggests there is little between them with Sedanzer favourite at $ 3.40 and Dreamforce pressing at $ 4. The barrier draw is the key here with Dreamforce drawn wide in 14, meaning he will need to work hard early to get across into his preferred on-pace position. Sedanzer settles midfield early in her races which gives her the opportunity to produce that brilliant finishing speed that has swept her to impressive wins at Rosehill over 1400m and 1500m. She is creeping up in the weights but is still the one to beat. Dreamforce was far too good for his rivals over 1500m at Rosehill last start but could be left vulnerable if he has to work too hard early. Chatelard is a promising type who will be running on well and Zourkhan’s recent trial win was exceptional.
SPEED MAP: Dreamforce likes to lead and although he has drawn very wide, there is not a lot of speed drawn underneath him. Zourkhan rolls forward, as will lightweights Magicalease and Brogue.
DID YOU KNOW: Peribsen was born in Ireland, sired by Australian champion stallion Lonhro when he was shuttling to stand at stud in America, has had eight starts in France and makes his Australian debut on Saturday.
BETTING STRATEGY: Sedanzer to win.
MARKET MOVERS: Sedanzer $ 4-$ 3.40 ($ 750 @ $ 4, $ 300 @ $ 3.60)
R7: VILLIERS STAKES (1600m) 4.20pm
OVERVIEW:I’m sticking with Interlocuter. He has scored successive wins over 1600m 1800m and 1900m before being freshened with a month between runs going into the Villiers. A very talented galloper who looks fully equipped to cope with the jump to Group 2 level. Cabeza De Vaca had excuses last start but back on a firm track over the Randwick 1600m, he will take a power of running down. Mister Sea Wolf ran a blinder at his Australian debut and can only improve. Mighty Lucky hasn’t been far away in recent starts and is the value runner.
SPEED MAP: Cabeza De Vaca enjoys the front-running role. He should control the tempo with stablemate Dark Eyes coming over from his wide barrier to settle on speed. This should be a solidly run Randwick mile.
DID YOU KNOW: Destiny’s Kiss has 59kg and if he can score an upset Villiers win, it will be biggest winning weight in the race since Filipino carried a similar handicap in 1948.
BETTING STRATEGY: Interlocuter to win and will have a saver on Mighty Lucky at $ 21.
MARKET MOVERS: Interlocuter $ 3-$ 3.20 ($ 500 @ $ 3 THREE TIMES; Red Excitement $ 15-$ 14; Crack Me Up $ 8-$ 7 ($ 400 @ $ 8, $ 300 @ $ 7, $ 250 @ $ 7); Mister Sea Wolf $ 6-$ 5.50
R8: RAZOR SHARP HCP (1200m) 5pm
OVERVIEW: Tough race so I’m going wide with Palazzo Pubblico. She ran a blinder first-up when third to Ball Of Muscle down the straight at Flemington last month. She has been kept fresh since but trialled very well at Rosehill last week. I Thought So has also been freshened since a stakes placing at Flemington and trialled brilliantly at Warwick Farm earlier this month. Drawn to get the run of the race. Calanda is close to a win, Isorich is very under-rated, Kuro has been luckless this campaign and Chetwood could win this on his best form.
SPEED MAP: Chetwood has drawn the car park but he is a big horse and needs room to roll. He has brilliant early speed but will need to be ridden aggressively to cross this field with so much speed drawn inside him.
DID YOU KNOW: Japonisme is the only Group 1 winner in the field but he hasn’t won a race since for 20 months.
BETTING STRATEGY: Palazzo Pubblico each way at $ 15 and I can’t let Isorich go around at $ 19 without having something on him.
MARKET MOVERS: Chetwood $ 8-$ 6 ($ 400 @ $ 7, $ 250 @ $ 6); I Thought So $ 6-$ 4.80
R9: TAB.COM.AU HCP (1400m) 5.40pm
OVERVIEW: Uptown Lad was considered suspect in heavy going but that didn’t stop him from destroying his rivals at Rosehill two weeks ago. He has scored two very impressive wins in as many starts this campaign and can continue his rich vein of form. Malaise produced a pleasing return at Canterbury and will be fitter. Redouble is better suited on a firm track and expect an improved showing from Heavenly Anna.
SPEED MAP: The Pharoah is out to his right distance range on Saturday and should lead with Redouble, Desert General and He’s A Given settling in forward positions. Expect an even tempo.
DID YOU KNOW: Heavenly Anna excels over the Randwick 1400m course where she has won twice previously.
BETTING STRATEGY: Uptown Lad to win box trifecta 2,4,5,9.
MARKET MOVERS: Powerline $ 8-$ 7.50 ($ 2500 x $ 5000 e/w @ $ 8/$ 2.75)
Uptown Lad $ 8-$ 7.50
ROYAL RANDWICK
Track: Good 4. Rail: 3m out.
BEST BET: VIRIDINE (Race 6, No. 3)
NEXT BEST: DIXIE BLOSSOMS (Race 8, No. 2)
R1 (12.30pm): BRMM HCP (1400m)
OVERVIEW: Tricky race to start the day. Sparky Lad was a strong winner first-up and we saw Kaonic come out of that race and win impressively on Wednesday. I like the way Goodfella finished off the last 100m over the 1100m first-up and he might just relish the step up in trip here. He comes through a pretty good rating race and is not hopeless at $ 13. Our Mantra lands midfield and runs his usual honest race, while Cabeirian has been running good time in the country but whether he is up to this is the query. Regent is a good chance but he will have to give them a start you would think and he is just too short in the market.
DID YOU KNOW: Brenton Avdulla (Sparky Lad) is striking at 32 per cent from his past 50 rides (as of Thursday morning).
SPEED MAP: Solid speed here with French Tune, Cabeirian and Molten all leading recently. Every horse should get their chance.
BETTING STRATEGY: Boxed quinella 1,4,6.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Regent $ 2.80-$ 2.60, Our Mantra $ 8-$ 7.50
R2 (1.10pm): IGA LIQUOR HCP (2000m)
OVERVIEW: Alward and Up ‘N’ Rolling meet again here and it’s fair to say Up ‘N’ Rolling beats Alward home last start if not for a brilliant ride from Hugh Bowman. He kept Up ‘N’ Rolling in a pocket right up until the 150m mark and by the time he got out it was too late. I think with even luck Up ‘N’ Rolling should turn the tables but there’s not a lot between them. Singing was OK first-up in the Wyong Gold Cup but needs to improve again.
DID YOU KNOW: Up ‘N’ Rolling meets Alward 1½kg better off at the weights from last start.
SPEED MAP: Singing should lead but don’t be surprised if Veladero pushes on as well. It will be an interesting tactical battle.
BETTING STRATEGY: Happy to watch these at current prices.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Alward $ 3.50-$ 3.10, Up N Rolling $ 1.90-$ 1.80
R3 (1.50pm): ADINA APARTMENT HOTELS HCP (1600m)
OVERVIEW: Interlocuter’s first-up effort at Rosehill was full of merit and he should take benefit from that. He has had a nice trial since and looks on the up. Mapmaker has really found his groove in recent runs and he should go forward and stick on late. Hogmanay has just lacked that dash at the finish lately, so a strong Randwick mile looks ideal. They look the main three.
DID YOU KNOW: Interlocuter controversially lost the race on protest first-up at Rosehill.
SPEED MAP: Speed looks fair with Spring Tycoon, Waltzing Willie, Mapmaker and Hogmanay handy. Tough race to map.
BETTING STRATEGY: INTERLOCUTER on top but I would want $ 2.70+ to play.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Interlocuter $ 2.90-$ 2.40 ($ 330 @ $ 2.90, $ 300 @ $ 2.90 TWICE, $ 1,000 @ $ 2.70, $ 800 @ $ 2.60, $ 5,000 @ $ 2.50)
R4 (2.25pm): TAB HIGHWAY HCP (1600m)
OVERVIEW: Matthew Dunn knows what it takes to win these Highway races and he finds a suitable race over the mile for Cascata Rossa. He ran good time when winning over 1400m at the Gold Coast last start and maps to get a nice run. Schedule just missed in a three-way go in the Dubbo Cup last start and he looks ready to peak third-up. Dia De Reyes ran on well last start but he was suited by a very quick tempo that day. Mar Nero next best.
DID YOU KNOW: Cascata Rossa clocked an overall time at least 1.28 secs quicker than the other two 1400m races on the same day at the Gold Coast on September 20.
SPEED MAP: They always roll along in these Highway races. Red Knot, Halberd and Bronzed Venom should be up there early, while Cascata Rossa won’t be far away.
BETTING STRATEGY: CASCATA ROSSA on top but $ 3.20 is short enough. Hoping for better race day.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Cascata Rossa $ 3.10-$ 3.20 ($ 874 @ $ 3.20, $ 350 @ $ 3.10)
R5 (3pm): BOWERMANS HCP (1400m)
OVERVIEW: Pretty messy race with a host of chances. Burning Passion just missed behind Comin’ Through last start and that horse was fancied in an Epsom last weekend. Duca Valentinois flies fresh and his recent trials have been good. He will probably give them a start, though. Mighty Lucky put in a super effort to run second to Washington Heights in the Shannon Stakes and a repeat of that sees him go close. Shillelagh is a hard horse to catch but bolted in first-up last prep in Group company against her own sex. Sir Plush ran them ragged from the front last time out and may adopt similar tactics. Pajaro is not hopeless either.
DID YOU KNOW: Mighty Lucky and Pajaro haven’t won for 497 and 512 days respectively.
SPEED MAP: Sir Plush and Burning Passion should take it up with Got Unders behind them. Sir Plush rolled along last start and could do the same again. Tempo will be strong if he does.
BETTING STRATEGY: Boxed trifecta 1,2,4,6,9.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Sir Plush $ 5-$ 3.40 ($ 500 @ $ 5, $ 800 @ $ 4.60, $ 1,550 @ $ 3.90, $ 682 @ $ 3.60)
R6 (3.35pm): ROMAN CONSUL STAKES (1200m)
OVERVIEW: Hard to go past Viridine. He was pretty impressive first-up and had improvement to come. I know Single Bullet didn’t have a lot of luck in the same race but he wouldn’t have won and the step up to 1200m is ideal for Viridine. Single Bullet can improve with a better run in transit but I think Viridine has more upside. Beau Geste is a promising colt but Paret would have beaten him last start if he went straight and I think the Viridine form line is stronger.
DID YOU KNOW: Check out the horses to have won this race in the past four years — Russian Revolution (2016), Exosphere (2015), Brazen Beau (2014) and Zoustar (2013).
SPEED MAP: Snitzkraft and Shudabeen look your leaders with Single Bullet and Viridine not far away. Speed only looks even.
BETTING STRATEGY: Keen on VIRIDINE to win at $ 2.90.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Viridine $ 3-$ 2.90, Single Bullet $ 4 unchanged ($ 500 @ $ 4), Beau Geste $ 7-$ 6.50 ($ 300 @ $ 7, $ 200 @ $ 7)
R7 (4.10pm): SPRING CHAMPION STAKES (2000m)
OVERVIEW: Hard to go past Ace High, he was pretty impressive in the Gloaming Stakes over 1800m last start. He is a natural stayer and should push forward from barrier four and prove hard to catch. Sanctioned wasn’t far off Ace High last start and he can run well again. Ace High held him at bay but he should get the 2000m and will be strong late. Sully ran on solidly in the Gloaming, while Dissolution, Tangled and Langley bring this Dulcify Quality form to the table which is different. I’m not sure it is as strong and they did go some 12 lengths slower overall than the Epsom on the same day last weekend. Tangled meets those other two horses a lot better off at the weights this weekend and must be the pick of the trio.
DID YOU KNOW: Sully posted the quickest last 200m split (12.04s) of the Gloaming Stakes. Also, Tangled meets Dissolution 7.5kg better off at the weights from being beaten less than half a length behind that horse in the Dulcify Quality. He also meets Langley 7.5kg better off for beating him home.
SPEED MAP: Expect Surprise Bullet to be up there early with Ace High, Sanctioned, Coral Coast and potentially Langley. Look for a good stayer.
BETTING STRATEGY: ACE HIGH to win but you should get better than $ 3.50 on race day.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Ace High $ 3.50-$ 3.40, Astoria $ 8-$ 7.50, Tangled $ 6-$ 5.50
R8 (4.50pm): ANGST STAKES (1600m)
OVERVIEW: Hard to go past Ron Quinton’s two mares, Dixie Blossoms and Daysee Doom, they are just so well off at the weights here. Daysee Doom sat three-deep last start and still beat Dixie Blossoms but I feel Dixie can turn the tables up to a mile. She is a much better horse at Randwick and has drawn ideally where Daysee Doom could well find herself three deep on speed again. Either way, they look the two. Dawn Wall was disappointing last start but the first-up run was good. She has claims if she can bring her A-form. Lovani isn’t the worst for first 4s and trifectas.
DID YOU KNOW: Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms will carry just 1 to 3kg more than their rivals under the set weights and penalties conditions of this race but would need to lump at least 5.5kg more than the rest of the field if this was a true handicap.
SPEED MAP: They will roll along here with Lovani, My True Love, Savapinski and Imposing Lass all up there. Daysee Doom needs luck to slot in.
BETTING STRATEGY: DIXIE BLOSSOMS to win at $ 4.40. Also saving on DAYSEE DOOM at $ 4.60.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Dixie Blossoms $ 5-$ 4.40 ($ 500 @ $ 5 TWICE), My True Love $ 8-$ 8.50, Savapinski $ 13-$ 12
R9 (5.30pm): METROPOLITAN CIVIL CONTRACTORS HCP (1200m)
OVERVIEW: The last race on the Sydney card is renowned for being the most open race of the day and this goes close to that. Piracy is starting to live up to the promise he has always shown and he ran good time last start at Canterbury. He has drawn to get a lovely run and is as good a chance as any of these. Firsthand has trialled well and just needs a little bit of luck to go close from barrier 10. A host of horses are on the next line, including Calabasas, Redouble and King Darci. You could make a case for a few more as well.
DID YOU KNOW: Piracy clocked an overall time at least .92 secs quicker than the two other 1250m races on the same day at Canterbury on September 13.
SPEED MAP: Good speed here with Just Dreaming, Firsthand, Annatime and potentially Tudor all up there. Every horse should get their chance.
BETTING STRATEGY: PIRACY on top but monitor track conditions and pattern for this race.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Redouble $ 13-$ 9 ($ 263 @ $ 9.50)
TURF TALK
Ray Thomas and Shayne O’Cass discuss their best bets for the weekend.
O’Cass: I like Langley in the Spring Champion. I thought he had significant and multiple reasons for his Dulcify ‘failure’. He is a deadset classic horse from nose to tail, and on pedigree.
Thomas: I also thought Langley’s Dulcify run was terrific and I rate him hardest to beat but I am with Ace High. He was very good in the Gloaming and being a High Chaparral, he has come into his own over these middle distances.
O’Cass: The Roman Consul has been a good horse’s race with an amazing honour roll, I am thinking Single Bullet might join them. He won’t be getting boxed in from barrier eight this time!
Thomas: I was a little worried about the barrier and where he might get to in the run. Viridine was good first-up in the Heritage and might get the soft run again from gate two.
O’Cass: Ron Quinton’s beloved mares, Daysee and Dixie, were one-two in the Golden Pendant but I have them the other way around mostly as a consequence of their contrasting draws. And one other — Zenalicious, I am hearing that she is absolutely flying in her work.
Thomas: Ditto. I also thought Dixie might be a fraction stronger at the end of the Randwick Mile than Daysee but wouldn’t you love to own either mare.
O’Cass: You know I love my trials RT, you know whose trials I have been loving — Firsthand. Wow.
Thomas: I am with you Shayno, both trials have been enormous. He is a little awkwardly drawn but it is a big field, a stack of speed, so I am banking on Sam Clipperton finding some cover, and if that is the case, go you good thing!
O’Cass: Interesting runner is All Our Roads. This ex-Kiwi Waller recruit is a Group 2 winner back home and, gee, he has trialled really well without being shown up.
Thomas: Our colleague, Simon Thomas, is all over ‘The Roads’, pardon the pun.
O’Cass: He got Foundry up last week, so he’s in form. I think I might nail the TAB Highway winner on Saturday. Sovereignaire and Glyn Schofield will do me. What’s your best at HQ, RT?
Thomas: I am all over Interlocuter. He lost on protest first-up and has had a nice soft trial since. He is a nice horse.
Horse Racing: Winx has won her first barrier trial this morning at Randwick Race course.![]()

RACE 1
NICE colt here — 5. GRETZKY (N/R) is his name and here’s some background. He is by All Too Hard and the first foal out of Victorian G3 winner There’s Only One. Gretzky sold for $ 120,000 as a weanling then made $ 300,000 as a yearling. He’s trained by Team Hawkes who know the sire better than anyone so if they liked this colt, then he must be a good type. I loved his trials, Tommy Berry has kept him under lock and key in those last two. The colt was scratched from WF on Wednesday where he drew 13 of 13 in a race that I could argue was stronger than this one where he’s drawn 3. I am making him my best bet. Million dollar yearling 1. DRACARYS (N/R) is going to have a nice 3YO campaign once it starts. He’s got a good dose of inbred quality about him, he was a debut winner then ran fav in the G2 Skyline after that and ran okay. Trialled nicely for the return. 6. GRESHAM (N/R) turned in a big, big debut 2nd at Kembla to 2. ASSIMILATE (N/R). The son of Sebring is going to derive benefit from that run for sure.
RACE 2
Matthew Dale is one away from 10 TAB Highway wins this season and I reckon he’ll probably get it here this Saturday with Happy Clapper’s half brother and Thankgodyou’rehere close relative 9. ON THE FIDDLE (57). This handsome 3YO chestnut gelding should be 3 from 3 but that’s another story. What I can say for sure is that he strikes this race in wonderful shape and he’s got the winning weight of just 53.5kgs. Jason Collett rode him to win last start and he’s on again tomorrow (no surprise) but he’ll need a good ride to get him home from barrier 11 of 12. Wow, what do we do with 4. SUNCRAZE (62)? Given past history I suppose we take an exacta, anything (in this case, On The Fiddle) to beat him. I don’t say that to be glib but facts are facts, this horse has run 6 seconds from 7 starts. Where he may be able to turn those silvers into gold is that 1400m Randwick should be his go and big, big gear change — blinkers on! 1. NIC’S VENDETTA (72) has run in 5 Highway’s before he won his 6th at WF last Saturday beating none other than Suncraze. Hard to imagine him missing a place. 3. LAST TRY WINS (67) was a super 2nd in an 1800m Highway before that barnstorming 2nd at Scone over the mile. re the 1400m, he is 6s 0-1-3.
RACE 3
2. MAGIC ALIBI (81) was scratched from the July Stakes to run here. I suppose in a lot of ways this is the easier race but I am not so sure. That said, I have got her on top, she did happen to beat 1. MEMES (83) last start. Talk about consistency, Memes has won or placed at 12 of her 14 starts broken down into 4 wins, 4 seconds and 4 thirds. I guess that’s a result of putting herself bang on the pace, often leading, and having some ticker to go on with it when challenged. Gate 1 is a blessing, ditto Rachel King who has a record of 5 rides, 4 wins and a second. Nice. 5. UPSCALE (80) was 2.6-lens 5th behind Magic Alibi and Memes at Rosehill on Jul. 1. I think coming back from 1200m to 1100m really suits Upscale (7s 3-0-1) but so too Memes of course who is 8s 2-2-3. They aren’t the only chances by any measure, trial watchers will be bullish about the first-up prospects of 6. POSITIVE PROBLEMS (76) but her 9 of 9 draw plays badly for her on paper.
RACE 4
SPEAKING of trials, nothing going around at Randwick tomorrow, nay in all of Australia, can possibly claim to have trialled better than 5. SUPER TOO (76) from the Marc Conners stable. She won her WF heat on Jun. 30 by 1.8-lens then won her Jul. 14 heat there by 11.8-lens, both of them pretty much with her ears pricked and the head on her chest. Deanne Panya rode him both times, she’s won on her too so they really are a good match. Gate 2, I am sure Super Too jumps, leads, runs fast and hopefully they can’t catch her. Stewards note: ‘’the filly has undergone surgery to remove bone chips in its near-fore fetlock since its last start (Canterbury 31/12/16).’’
Marc’s sire Clarry is a chance to make it a father/.son quinella with Victory Lodge saddling up the always honest 4. DORF STAR (72). He is back from 1200m.1250m to 1000m third-up but is 5s 1-1-1 at the 1000m and this is going be a very testing five furlongs! Bowman rides. 1. PRO CONSUL (75) is likely to be run off his legs early on but he’ll be the one finishing with the big splits. There is a chance though that he might be so far off Super Too up the rise that it is a mathematical and physical impossibility for this fellow to make up the deficit.
RACE 5
I WAS pretty keen on the Godolphin filly 10. CHATUCHAK (69) first-up off her trials and I wasn’t alone, she was $ 5.50 into $ 4.40. She clocked in last of the 9 beaten about 6-lens — the Gun (Avdulla) told the stewards ‘’ he was obliged to correct his mount near the 200m, it was then held up on the heels of Zin Zan Elsie and while the horse finished some margin from the winner, he felt that in the circumstances, his horse had impeded running in the straight, and therefore the performance still had some merit. A post race veterinary examination revealed an aggravation to a speedy cut to the near hind pastern.’’. Chatuchak is 2s 1-1-0 second-up, is 3s 2-1-0 at the trip and beat Parlay Vous (runs here) one day at Gosford. 11. AQUATIC (64) won like a champion on Australia Day but hasn’t won before or after which is so strange given what he did here that particular afternoon. It was awesome. He is getting very close to a second win now, that run at WF last Saturday week was portentous to say the least. 2. SPENDING TO WIN (71) also went around and placed 2nd at the Farm on Jul. 8, in his case he was beaten by 1. Kings Of Leon (72) who was pretty wonderful but keep in mind that Spending To Win drew wide, worked early and fought on doggedly — first-up!

RACE 6
TRUST me, ignore the ‘x00’ next to 9. LOOPHOLE (85), he is just not going anywhere as near as badly as you’d think. Okay, he’s not exactly going gangbusters either but I really think he has needed those two runs this prep and as far as his trials have been concerned, he’s looked as good as he ever has to my eye anyway. Blinkers again, 1800m Randwick (a favoured venue) and no weight again. He has trialled again since his last run and he went great so at the odds, why not a little bit each-way. Waller has four in the race and I fancy 8. SO WILLIE (86) as the big threat to my roughie Loophole. So Willie was 2nd to 5. LIAPARI (90) at WF on Jul. 8. Both horses went really well that day. I have to find a prominent spot for 1. SOUND PROPOSITION (103) who was G1 placed in NZ for Lance O’Sullivan. The son of Savabeel was $ 8 into $ 6.50 when he had his first run (and win) for new trainer Kris Lees here at HQ over the mile. Lees had the horse nomed for the Tatts Mile in Brisbane but stays in Sydney telling us that he thought the 1800m was suitable and he’s proven at Randwick. Fair call.
RACE 7
HASN’T Gerry Harvey had some fun with 2. FELINES (105) over the years. She won her first two runs at Taree then Port Mac, comes to WF for a NMW race for 2YF and runs 2nd to…….Winx! Then she backs-up a week later at Canterbury and runs 2nd to …..Shooting To Win! Fast forwarding through the career and Felines is 20s 9-4-4, a G3 Concorde and Hawkesbury Rush winner who was also 4th in the Challenge to English and 5th in the Galaxy to Russian Revolution. Bit too heavy for Felines in the June Stakes, she freshened-up nicely and has trialled well on Jun. 5 and Jul. 18 (Tuesday). Drawn 1, Bowman, loves Randwick. Hates heavy. 1. THAT’S A GOOD IDEA (102) is 5s 1-2-0 at the t/d which is a good enough place to start. On top of that, his two trials have been really good; they always are. The last time this fellow raced was on Apr. 29 in the Hawkesbury Rush where he ran 0.6-lens 2nd to Felines as a matter of fact. That’s A Good Idea will never win an Everest but gosh he’s been a good, honest, quality sprinter for all of his 41 starts. Drawn 3 — the Snowden’s will love that. 3. BOSS LANE (99) has won 6 of his 8 career wins at Randwick but those 6 wins are from 24 starts which is getting up there. He is also 7s 0-0-1 at the trip and 5s 0-0-1 at the t/d. Don’t get me wrong, he can win, but the numbers read better for Felines and That’s A Good Idea on this occasion.
RACE 8
LOOKS like a good day coming up tomorrow for the Conners’ clan. I hope and think Marc wins with Super Too and Clarry can clean up his rivals where via 4. HE’S A GIVEN (75). On the downside, you could hardly call He’s A Given a pure Randwick horse or a 1200m specialist for that matter but I can vouch for him first-up and I thought that last trial was choc full of merit. The big plus is gate 3, if he can take some advantage of the soft draw, I reckon he can be in the finish. 8. KINGS OF LEON (72) was fantastic winning last start at Warwick Farm and was scratched from race 5 with this in mind. 6. BOLERO KING (74) showed why Clarry Conners is one of the best in the business and has been for decades with that win at Gosford on Jun. 16 more than a year after he last raced. Far from running poorly second-up off a long break which happens a lot, Bolero King led until the last few bounds when 2nd to 7. TORPENHOW (73) at Canterbury. Speaking of Torpenhow, I remember when he was ‘Torpen-wow’ but he never was able to take that next step to being a ‘good horse’. Doesn’t mean he won’t win tomorrow but I’ll take the each-way odds on He’s A Given.
RACE 9
11. BRAZEN (76) had his last start for David Vandyke on Jun. 11 in 2016 when he finished 5th in the Queensland Derby. As a matter of interest, Brazen’s first start for David Vandyke was 9th beaten 6.3-lens in Vancouver’s Breeders’ Plate. Brazen had three trials under the stewardship of new handler Joe Pride (all of them good) before his first-up run at WF on Jul. 8 where he was $ 21 to $ 31. Brazen ran 14th of 15 but honestly, do yourself a favour and watch the replay — he had a wall of horses in front of him and went over the line without raising a sweat I should think. Is 3s 2 second-up. 13. FRANCESCO (74) is liable to peak third-up this weekend after two really nice efforts over the 1350m and 1300m to open the new campaign for Mark Newnham. This is Tommy Berry’s first ride on the horse and you can bet he’d love to get a win for his good friends and owners Greg and Donna Kolivos. Everything on paper and what we have seen on the turf points to Francesco going very close, if not in fact winning. I will definitely be having $ 5 or $ 10 on both Brazen and 8. HOLLYWOOD BOUND (79). I’ve already said ‘why’ Brazen but I did make Hollywood Bound a ‘XX’ special in the same race as Brazen. Brazen ran 14th, Hollwyood Bound 12th but once she missed the start it was all over red rover because the plan was to ride him close to the lead. We’ll never really know how it would have turned out for Hollywood Bound had he been in the first 4 or 5 but I am sure he wouldn’t have finished with only three behind him.

The Daily Telegraph’s Brad Davidson runs the rule over every race, including speed maps and suggested bets for Day One of The Championships.
The $ 3m Doncaster Mile headlines a star-studded opening day of The Championships. Four Group 1s will be decided along with the Country Championships Final on a bumper 10-race card at Royal Randwick.
ULTIMATE DONCASTER MILE FORM GUIDE
Big fields and a wet track will ensure a tricky day for punters, but Davo’s still confident of snaring a few winners at big odds.
ROYAL RANDWICK
Track: Soft 5. Rail: True position
RACE 1 (12.10pm): WIDDEN STAKES (1100m)
OVERVIEW: He might not be the best horse in the race but Solar Patch is a good bet at $ 40. He had to be snagged back first-up before making good ground late albeit in maiden grade. He can settle closer here and the $ 9 the place is very appealing. Alizee ran a gallant second to subsequent Golden Slipper placegetter Tulip last start. She will get back a touch but is the hardest to beat. Condor Heroes will be fitter second-up and will lead and prove hard to catch, while Property will get all the favours behind the speed.
SPEED MAP: Expect Condor Heroes to lead with From Within pushing forward. Property, Sheikha and Solar Patch won’t be far away with Alizee likely to drift back. Speed looks even at best.
DID YOU KNOW: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott (Sheikha) are striking at an amazing 22 per cent in 2016-17.
SUGGESTED BET: SOLAR PATCH each-way at $ 41 (more the place but still having something on the win).
RACE 2 (12.45pm): CARBINE CLUB STAKES (1600m)
OVERVIEW: Looks a race in two between Theanswermyfriend and Eusebio. The former will get a soft lead and that is a massive plus. The wet track is a concern though. Eusebio is the up- and-comer and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a Group 1 horse next year. He is a month between runs and up in trip but he is bred to love the mile (lack of tempo is my only concern). Acatour looms as the big improver, while Mr Sneaky did beat home Theanswermyfriend last start but the race was set up for him that day.
SPEED MAP: Theanswermyfriend should lob in front and he should get a very soft lead. Veladero won’t be far away, while Eusebio, Acatour and Zenalicious should all drift back.
DID YOU KNOW: Eusebio clocked the second quickest last 200m split of the meeting (11.30s) at Canberra on Cup Day (March 5).
SUGGESTED BET: EUSEBIO to win.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Theanswermyfriend $ 4.60-$ 3.80 ($ 700 @ $ 4.60, $ 1,000 @ $ 4), Mr Sneaky $ 6-$ 5.50
RACE 3 (1.20pm): CHAIRMAN’S HANDICAP (2600m)
OVERVIEW: Big Duke is the proven performer and the wet track is no concern for him. He won the Manion Cup on protest last start and he is rock-hard fit. International raider Polarisation is the interesting runner. He is being aimed at next weekend’s Sydney Cup but you would expect him to run well here. Aloft won first-up and should get on-pace favours, while Kiwi Rock On is hard to line up.
SPEED MAP: Expect Aloft to be handy along with Vandancer. Big Duke drifts back. Speed looks only fair.
DID YOU KNOW: Polarisation hasn’t raced for 208 days and hasn’t won for 582 days.
SUGGESTED BET: BIG DUKE to win.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Aloft $ 4.60-$ 4.40 ($ 800 @ $ 4.60)
Big Duke, right, will have conditions to suit in the Chairman’s Handicap.Source:AAP
RACE 4 (1.55pm): COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL (1400m)
OVERVIEW: Perfect Dare is really well weighted under the conditions of this race and the only knock is the wet track. Caerless Choice won the Scone heat and that is already shaping up to be a great form line. He was first-up that day and no doubt will be much fitter this weekend. Pumpkin Pie hasn’t been disgraced in stakes races of late and will relish the drop back to this country Final. Galaxy Warrior also has claims on the wet track.
SPEED MAP: There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of speed on paper. Nic’s Vendetta should lead, while Perfect Dare, Free Standing and Pumpkin Pie will all be handy. Caerless Choice should be midfield.
DID YOU KNOW: Six of the top seven home in the Wild Card (all regions) last Sunday came from the Scone region.
SUGGESTED BET: CAERLESS CHOICE to win.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Perfect Dare $ 3.50-$ 3.40 ($ 1,000 @ $ 3.50, $ 500 @ $ 3.50), Stoneyrise $ 26-$ 23
RACE 5 (2.30pm): PJ BELL STAKES (1200m)
OVERVIEW: Raiment looks the best bet of the day and she was dominant on wet ground first-up at this track. She will only strip fitter and she posted the quickest time of four 1200m races on Slipper day by at least .92s. Gibraltar Girl trialled well recently and can run a race at odds fresh, while Zumbelina has won four from five starts to date and her two trials have also been impressive. The wetter the better for Samantha but Raiment should be winning.
SPEED MAP: Good speed engaged with Scarlet Rain, French Fern, Sweet Sherry, Prompt Response, Modern Wonder and Conchita all pushing forward. Raiment won’t be far away.
DID YOU KNOW: Raiment (35.75s) clocked the second quickest last 600m split of the Randwick meeting on March 18 only behind Winx.
SUGGESTED BET: RAIMENT to win. Include GIBRALTAR GIRL in all exotics.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Raiment $ 4.60-$ 3.60 ($ 250 x $ 350 e/w @ $ 4.60/$ 1.90, $ 500 @ $ 4.40, $ 500 @ $ 4, $ 900 @ $ 3.60)
RACE 6 (3.10pm): INGLIS SIRES’ (1400m)
OVERVIEW: Frolic and Tulip officially finished second and third in the Golden Slipper and they look the obvious two. Tulip was three deep without cover in the Slipper while Frolic saved all the ground on the inside. Tulip has had two tough runs now but she is the one to beat providing she isn’t looking for the paddock. Memento is a very good roughie at $ 61 if she gets a run (second emergency). She clocked an identical last 600m split to Alizee in the Magic Night last start and she is over the odds. Menari is still on the way up and has upside, while Gunnison, Chauffeur, Invader and One More Honey also have genuine claims.
SPEED MAP: Expect Gunnison, Sircconi and The Mission to all roll forward. Aspect, Trapeze Artist and Tulip won’t be far away. Speed looks genuine.
DID YOU KNOW: The Golden Slipper has produced two of the last four Sires’ winners and six of the past 12 placegetters.
SUGGESTED BET: TULIP to win. Also back MEMENTO each-way at $ 61 if she gains a start.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Menari $ 8-$ 9, Veranillo $ 26-$ 18, Frolic $ 4.60-$ 4.80 ($ 500 @ $ 4.80)
Tulip has had two tough runs but she looks the one to beat in the Inglis Sires’Source:News Corp Australia
RACE 7 (3.50pm): AUSTRALIAN DERBY (2400m)
OVERVIEW: Happy to take on the Kiwis here who have to peak again. Inference was dominant in the Randwick Guineas and then he just didn’t handle the bottomless track in the Rosehill Guineas. He was very stiff in the Victoria Derby last year and will eat up 2400m. Prized Icon’s chances depend on the track conditions but if it dries out to a Soft 7 or better he is a good bet at $ 10. He won the Victoria Derby last spring and clearly just hasn’t been handling the very wet tracks of late. Anaheim clocked the quickest last 200m split in the Rosehill Guineas and just wants a drying track to go close. Gingernuts and Jon Snow next best but they’ve both been up a long time and I’m risking them at the price.
SPEED MAP: Jon Snow and Harper’s Choice should take it up with Prized Icon behind them. Inference and Gingernuts both drift back.
DID YOU KNOW: Barrier one (Anaheim) has produced the Australian Derby winner the past three years.
SUGGESTED BET: INFERENCE to win.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Gingernuts $ 3.50-$ 3.40 ($ 2,000 @ $ 3.50), Inference $ 4.40-$ 4.60, Jon Snow $ 6-$ 7.50
RACE 8 (4.30pm): TJ SMITH STAKES (1200m)
OVERVIEW: Chautauqua is trying to win the race for the third consecutive year but he is coming back from 1500m and will drift right back in a race with little speed on paper. Russian Revolution interests me. He won The Galaxy first-up despite being trapped three-wide without cover and he only needs to improve a touch off that to go close. Rock Magic, Voodoo Lad and Tivaci are all over the odds and all three are musts for quaddies. Spieth was disappointing in the Newmarket but was back on the rail cluttered up and it could be worth forgiving that performance. He would be favourite for this race on his form prior. Malaguerra comes in nice and fresh, which is his go, but the likely wet track is a worry. I’m taking on Astern first-up.
SPEED MAP: Expect Russian Revolution to take it up with Malaguerra also up there. Spieth and Chautauqua drift back.
DID YOU KNOW: Tivaci clocked the quickest last 600m split (31.77s) and 400m split (22.02s) of the entire meetings at Flemington on January 28 and on March 11 respectively.
SUGGESTED BET: Small win bets TIVACI ($ 21) and ROCK MAGIC ($ 26). Boxed trifecta — 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 14 — $ 25 for 20 per cent.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Chautauqua $ 4.60-$ 4.80 ($ 1,000 @ $ 4.60, $ 500 @ $ 4.60), Malaguerra $ 10-$ 9.50 ($ 1,000 @ $ 10), Spieth $ 8-$ 8.50, Russian Revolution $ 7-$ 6.50 ($ 400 @ $ 7)
RACE 9 (5.10pm): DONCASTER MILE (1600m)
OVERVIEW: Another cracking Doncaster Mile. Redkirk Warrior blew them away in the Newmarket first-up and while 1200m to 1600m second-up is unconventional, he won the Sandown Stakes second-up over 1500m last prep and was strong through the line. He would be hard to beat on a dry track but the wet track is the concern. Happy Clapper is back to his best this autumn. He ran second in this race last year but that was with 50.5kg. Le Romain doesn’t get in too bad at the weights in comparison to his rivals and he is too consistent to leave out of anything. Sense Of Occasion is a good roughie and the wet track suits him. He won the Villiers off a similar lead up.
SPEED MAP: Expect Ecuador to take it up, with Testashadow, Le Romain and potentially Endless Drama pushing forward. Happy Clapper shouldn’t be far away. Hauraki, Spectroscope and McCreery should all drift back.
DID YOU KNOW: Chris Waller has won the past four Doncasters and six of the past nine.
SUGGESTED BET: Back HAPPY CLAPPER to win at $ 11. Include REDKRIK WARRIOR and SENSE OF OCCASION in all exotics. Boxed trifecta — 2, 5, 10, 13.
TAB MARKET MOVERS: Hauraki $ 8-$ 9.50, Le Romain $ 6 unchanged ($ 700 @ $ 6, $ 600 @ $ 6, $ 500 e/w @ $ 6/$ 2.25, $ 500 @ $ 6, $ 450 @ $ 6), Happy Clapper $ 9.50-$ 11, Palentino $ 13-$ 10 ($ 300 @ $ 13, $ 500 e/w @ $ 11/$ 3.50 TWICE, $ 300 @ $ 11), Redkirk Warrior $ 11-$ 10 ($ 500 @ $ 11 TWICE), Mcreery $ 8-$ 11
Happy Clapper looks good value in the Doncaster Mile. Picture: Jenny EvansSource:News Corp Australia
RACE 10 (5.50pm): ADRIAN KNOX STAKES (2000m)
OVERVIEW: Looks a race in three between La Chatte, Mull Over and High Impulse. I loved the turn of foot La Chatte showed at Kembla Grange on March 10 and she clocked the fifth quickest last 200m of the meet to suggest the extra trip will suit. Mull Over and High Impulse are coming off maiden wins over 1600m and 1800m respectively and both look as if the extra trip won’t bother them. I’m taking on equal favourite Perfect Rhyme who looks a risk at 2000m.
SPEED MAP: Almalita should take it up with Cambage, High Impulse, Face Like Thunder and potentially Dancing Hare all pushing forward. Mull Over and Le Chatte should be midfield or worse. Speed should be even.
DID YOU KNOW: Glyn Schofield rode both Mull Over and High Impulse last start but rides Mull Over in this race.
SUGGESTED BET: LA CHATTE to win.

TURF TALK
Ray Thomas and Brad Davidson discuss their best bets for Doncaster/Derby Day.
BD: It doesn’t get much better than this, Ray. The Championships Day 1 at Randwick and four big Group 1s to be run and won.
RT: The quality of the Group 1s and the entire meeting for that matter is outstanding. The Doncaster I think is the fifth major in Australian racing and this is one of the deepest in years.
BD: I’m a Happy Clapper fan and I just reckon he is back to his best this autumn. I would have had Redkirk Warrior on top if the track was dry but he might still be too good for them. Le Romain and $ 51 shot Sense Of Occasion round out my top four.
RT: How good is Redkirk Warrior. The Hayes camp have a massive opinion of him and if he handles the wet track he is going to be hard to beat. But I keep coming back to Le Romain. He is so genuine, ticks all the boxes and is racing in super form.
BD: The Kiwis have had our measure in the Derby lead ups but I’m potting them this weekend, Ray. Gingernuts and Jon Snow are hard to beat on form but they’ve been up a long time and surely they have to be getting a bit weary?
RT: I hope you’re right because I’m with Inference. He is fourth-up, handles rain affected going, loves Randwick and will run this trip right out.
BD: I’m with you Ray and I think Inference is a good bet. I’ll be saving on Prized Icon if the track returns to the soft range and he just hasn’t been handling those heavy tracks lately.
RT: The Golden Slipper form is usually the best form for the Sires’ so how do you go past Frolic, the Slipper runner-up.
BD: She has such a brilliant turn of foot and she will be flashing home at the finish. I leant Tulip’s way though but second emergency Memento is one of the best roughies of the day at $ 61 if she gets a run.
RT: Can Chautauqua do the three-peat?
BD: I’m taking on the big grey and I just don’t think it sets up well for him- 1500m back to 1200m and he is likely to get a long way back in what looks a slowly run race. Russian Revolution on top for me but Tivaci is airborne and just needs to handle the wet track to go close at $ 21.
RT: I take your point but Chautauqua does love Randwick. Best bet time- I reckon I might know your best Brad.
BD: Everybody Loves ‘Raiment’, Ray.
RT: I’m with you, she was so good first-up and you would expect her to take improvement from that run. There’s also been good money for her already, you better get on now mate.
BD: I’m on my way to the TAB as we speak.
