Proteins are chains of amino acids, and each link in the chain can hold any one of the 20 amino acids that life relies on. If you were to pick each link at random, the number of possible proteins ends up reaching astronomical levels pretty fast.

So how does life ever end up evolving entirely new genes? One lab has been answering that question by making its own proteins from scratch.

Way back in 2016, the same lab figured out that new, random proteins can perform essential functions. And those new proteins were really new. They were generated by scientists who made amino acid sequences at random and then kept any that folded into the stable helical structures commonly found in proteins. These proteins were then screened to see if any could rescue E. coli that were missing a gene essential to survival.

Giftthaler’s road trip around the Mediterranean country led to some interesting encounters with the statues that, as Ignant put it, could be “a tribute to Italy’s heritage — the preservation of art within the public realm, or maybe just a scattered attempt to rehome mass-produced statues.” As the artist explained to Ignant, “What is interesting to me about these statues is the fact that someone took the time to buy them and put them there.” Italy has an estimated 100,000 monuments, including statues, fountains, and archaeological remains; who are we to judge if one of them is just hanging out on a grassy island off a highway? The classical forms against modern backdrops is a fascinating sight.

Rail Theory’s Randomly Generated Enemies Ensure Constantly Challenging Shooting https://briefnews.eu/rail-theorys-randomly-generated-enemies-ensure-constantly-challenging-shooting/ https://briefnews.eu/rail-theorys-randomly-generated-enemies-ensure-constantly-challenging-shooting/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 13:54:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rail-theorys-randomly-generated-enemies-ensure-constantly-challenging-shooting/ 93cdb5794a3579a6da42b64b412b18e6_original.png

Finding items needed to repair your ship on a hostile alien planet was going to be hard enough, third person shooter Rail Theory takes it one step further with enemies that adapt to your play style on the fly. Rely on any one weapon or combat style too much, and minutes later, you’ll be inundated with creatures that have been designed to counter it. Possibly even during the same fight.

All enemies are designed as the game plays, with pieces of armor, weapons, and body types all decided as the creature comes into combat, built around countering how the player has been fighting. Not only this, but the mutating enemies will change as players attack them, with icy enemies taking extra damage from fire at first, only to shift to a fire-type enemy as the battle progresses. They can also change over the course of the fight by having weapons break from taking bludgeoning damage, or tear off pieces of their own body to use as weapons should theirs become destroyed. Each fight with these vicious creatures is designed to keep you on your toes, constantly shifting how to best approach battle.

You also have to keep an eye on more than just your health throughout Rail Theory. Heath is shown through armor, but players also take Trauma damage as armor decreases. Trauma fill fill up your available Stamina gauge, which is used for attacks and movement, so as health decreases, players will quickly notice their capabilities getting weaker, including slower movement and shakier hands when aiming. It means taking damage is a big problem, and gives you a lot to worry about on top of the crafty creatures.

Rail Theory is currently in development, but there’s a demo available through Itch.io for those who wish to try out its brutal, ever-changing combat now.

For more information on Rail Theory and developer Tryconic Studios, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter. The game is also raising development funding on Kickstarter.

‘US coalition bombs randomly, hitting civilians rather than ISIS’ – Raqqa refugees to RT https://briefnews.eu/us-coalition-bombs-randomly-hitting-civilians-rather-than-isis-raqqa-refugees-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/us-coalition-bombs-randomly-hitting-civilians-rather-than-isis-raqqa-refugees-to-rt/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 01:38:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-coalition-bombs-randomly-hitting-civilians-rather-than-isis-raqqa-refugees-to-rt/ Civilian casualties from the US-supported operation to retake Raqqa are mounting daily, while those fortunate enough to survive and flee the ISIS-held city have accused the American-led coalition of “haphazard” bombardment allied to the indiscriminate use of white phosphorus.

Strikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists in and around Syria’s Raqqa province have been ongoing since November. On Wednesday alone, US-coalition forces conducted 14 strikes against IS “tactical units” in the area. But while the American-led coalition insists that it is targeting terrorist positions, civilians routinely end up dead or wounded.

The US-led alliance is “haphazardly bombing everyone” in Raqqa, a woman who was brought into a hospital in Qamishli, a city in northeastern Syria, told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

“If you are sitting at home [a bomb] may fall on you. There are houses that collapsed over their residents and they could not get out, all this happened because of the airstrikes,” she said describing the situation in Raqqa.

Those who fled Raqqa questioned the US-led bombing campaign’s intensity and overall siege strategy, claiming that more than half of the terrorist have openly fled the city. The survivors are especially concerned about the use of white phosphorus.

“The aircraft bomb using phosphoric [bombs]. It strikes haphazardly targeting everyone, it is not hitting ISIS. ISIS is gone, but [the coalition] is bombing randomly,” the woman who spoke with Ruptly said.

“You see that your enemy [ISIS] is planting landmines, why are you using the aircraft? You can film here and see that no one is there, so why are you bombing? The people are dying for nothing and no one is helping them,” she added.

White phosphorus is an incendiary weapon which burns when it comes into contact with oxygen, producing high-temperature heat and its characteristic white smoke. Despite the high casualty rate resulting from such bombs, its use is not explicitly banned by international law if it’s used against combat targets outside civilian areas.

Last Wednesday, Human Rights Watch condemned the use of white phosphorus bombs by the US-led coalition as part of Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria.

“No matter how white phosphorus is used, it poses a high risk of horrific and long-lasting harm in crowded cities like Raqqa and Mosul and any other areas with concentrations of civilians,”said Steve Goose, arms director at HRW.

Apart from the constant bombardment, another major obstacle facing the civilian exodus from the city is the mine-laden streets, a common, yet brutal tactic used by jihadists to ensure maximum civilian casualties and a cover for their own retreat.

“They used to put [keep-away minefield] signs, now [ISIS] plant mines during the night. No one sees them, then people go out and walk and mines explode on them. You can’t even walk out of your house,” said a boy, still in shock from what he has witnessed in Raqqa.

On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said he was “deeply alarmed” at the “depths of human suffering” in Syria.

“Civilians continue to be killed, injured and displaced at a terrifying rate. I am also alarmed that places of refuge, such as hospitals and schools continue to be targeted,” Guterres said, adding, that he is particularly concerned about “the perilous situation for civilians in Raqqa.”

Washington has been backing the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a multi-ethnic, but predominantly Kurdish alliance of forces in an offensive known as Operation Euphrates Rage. Launched in November last year, the campaign aimed to encircle and retake Raqqa.

The ongoing siege on the terrorist stronghold has been marred by at least 300 civilian fatalities and the displacement of some 160,000 people, a UN commission said last week.

Police storm house after shooter randomly fires at passers-by near Moscow (WATCH LIVE) https://briefnews.eu/police-storm-house-after-shooter-randomly-fires-at-passers-by-near-moscow-watch-live/ https://briefnews.eu/police-storm-house-after-shooter-randomly-fires-at-passers-by-near-moscow-watch-live/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2017 18:12:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/police-storm-house-after-shooter-randomly-fires-at-passers-by-near-moscow-watch-live/

At least four people have been reported killed in a shooting incident in the village of Kratovo, southeast of Moscow, where a man barricaded himself in his house and opened fire on by-passers, seemingly at random.

At least five men and women were reportedly shot at by the gunman during his rampage according to Russian media which says at least four people died from their injuries.

“According to preliminary reports, in the area of Kratovo a man born in 1967, from the territory of his household, started shooting at passers-by with a hunting rifle,” the local department of the Interior Ministry told RT in an earlier statement. “As a result of gunfire several people were injured to varying degrees and were hospitalized.”

The house was cordoned off and special forces from the Russian National Guard were deployed to the scene. The gunman also fired at them and threw two grenades, a security source told RIA Novosti.

“On the territory of the house from which the shots were fired, two more dead bodies were found. This brings the total number of dead to four,” a police source told TASS.

There were also a number of other people living in the house and it’s yet unclear what has happened to them.

One of the victims, a woman, died in hospital, while her husband is said to be in a critical condition, according to local Interior Ministry director Elena Fokina. A murder investigation is now underway.

The survivors are being treated at Zhukovsky city hospital.

Neighbors told TASS that the suspect served in the conflict in Chechnya, lives with his mother and may be suffering from a mental condition.

Why Did John Boyega Randomly Hug Adam Driver on the Set of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’? https://briefnews.eu/why-did-john-boyega-randomly-hug-adam-driver-on-the-set-of-star-wars-the-last-jedi/ https://briefnews.eu/why-did-john-boyega-randomly-hug-adam-driver-on-the-set-of-star-wars-the-last-jedi/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 02:49:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-did-john-boyega-randomly-hug-adam-driver-on-the-set-of-star-wars-the-last-jedi/ John Boyega Hugs Adam Driver - Kylo Ren

In the world of acting, there are those stars who are only in character when the camera is rolling, and there are those who prefer to dig a little deeper and stay in character during the production, if not a bit longer. It sounds like Adam Driver belongs in the latter category, at least when it comes to playing the physically and emotionally scarred Star Wars villain Kylo Ren.

At the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren had to make the grim decision to kill his father Han Solo in order to stop the struggle in his mind that kept him from submitting to the dark side completely. Adam Driver has said that because of that, there may be more scars he’s dealing with than the one that now crosses his eye, and when he’s on set, he brings that emotional intensity to his performance.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed by fellow cast members John Boyega and Mark Hamill, and they each tried to get through that exterior in their own way during production on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Find out more below.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about his role as Kylo Ren, Adam Driver had this to say about how he approaches the villain:

“There’s big personal things that I find about every character, not just in Star Wars, that you have to make as personal as possible. It’s the big joke about being an actor, that you make everything you’re doing seem like it’s life or death. The things about that character that I find painful, that I really relate to, I kind of prefer to keep to myself.”

Whatever those things are, Mark Hamill says they make Adam Driver “very moody and intense” during production. The actor who plays his Jedi uncle recalls a time that he once tried to make more of a connection with the actor:

“I remember saying to Adam, ‘I don’t know how you work, or your technique. But, at some point, you were my nephew. I probably bounced you on my knee. I probably babysat for you. There’s that side, and now we’re both estranged from the Skywalker family. All I’m suggesting is, if you’d like, maybe we could go to lunch, we could get together and hang out.’”

Hamill makes an interesting point about the relationship that used to exist between Luke Skywalker and his nephew, but even so, Driver refused the invitation. Personally, I think that Driver was smart to decline the offer. While Luke and Kylo Ren have similarities in how they’ve outcast themselves from the Skywalker family, the latter left the former behind in quite the dramatic way, and Driver probably doesn’t want any potential bonding that could happen between he and Hamill to influence his performance.

For Hamill’s part, he wasn’t offended at all. He told Vanity Fair, “more power to him,” and if it’s something that gives us a better performance from Driver, then I’m not going to judge him for it.

Meanwhile, John Boyega sees Adam Driver’s method approach to acting as an opportunity to have a bit of fun. The actor who plays Finn revealed that he and Daisy Ridley constantly try to bring some lightheartedness to the set, especially when dealing with Adam Driver’s moody presence. Boyega says:

“I give Adam hugs randomly, just for no reason. He just stands there. He just waits for me to be done.”

There better be video footage as John Boyega hugs Adam Driver before shooting a scene. This is the reason that supplemental features on home video releases of movies exists.
