Malek is now a global superstar after starring in the TV series Mr Robot and winning an Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. But shortly before taking to the Academy Awards last weekend, he explained how his mother had initially hoped he would pursue something like medicine or the law. Safe to say, she soon came around.

“It’s tough to tell a mom you want to be an actor, especially when they’ve come from Egypt,” he told GMA.

“They wanted us as kids to live an American dream and be doctors and lawyers.

“So the second I said I might do something that’s a little bit abnormal, it took a while for her to be able to sit with that.

“But she’s very proud at the moment, I’ll say that.”

It’s no surprise: over recent months Malek has been decorated with the likes of a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors’ Guild award and an Oscar.

He’s now hotly tipped to play the villain in the next James Bond movie.

Taking to the podium to accept Best Actor at last weekend’s Academy Awards, Malek made reference to his upbringing as someone “struggling with his identity”.

“I think about what it would have been like to tell little bubba Rami that one day this might happen to him,” he said, and I think his curly haired little mind would be blown; that kid was struggling with his identity trying to figure himself out.

“We made a film about a gay man, an immigrant who lived his life just unapologetically himself.

“The fact I’m celebrating him and this story tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.

“I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, I’m a first generation American – and part of my story is being written right now.

“And I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me for this moment. It’s something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.”

Bohemian Rhapsody is out on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday. It’s available as a digital download now.

Bohemian Rhapsody DVD: Does Rami Malek sing? It is an impossible task stepping into Freddie’s shoes as an entertainer, let alone a singer. At the Oscars on Sunday night, Adam Lambert will once again perform alongside Brian May and Roger Taylor, as he has done for some years now. However, his distinctive vocals are not used in the movie. A little known singer was used to fill in the gaps between archive Freddie recordings and Malek’s own voice in the live scenes, and he sounds remarkably like the late, great Queen star.

The incredible bonus features on the BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY home entertainment packages give the first proper look (and listen) to Malek in action, performing many of the musical numbers from the show.

Malek, himself, has protested that “nobody wants to listen to that.” At one point, the behind-the-scenes footage shows him singing Fat Bottomed Girls and the simple fact is he sounds good. Not only can he carry a tune, he has the rock strength and sound of Freddie.

However, another performer, picked by Brian May and Roger Taylor as the winner of Queen Extravaganza competition back in 2011, was also used for the film.

Marc Martel, 42, still performs at Queen tribute concerts and spoke of the incredible experience being part of Bohemian Rhapsody. Watch him sing the title song below.

LOcal Canadian star Martel told Noise11: “They hired me to do some of the singing in the movie and give the audience an immersive experience and not be able to tell where the singing is coming from. It is to make the audience believe they are really watching Freddie Mercury sing.”

The Christian rock singer spent weeks at Abbey Road Studios laying down vocal tracks but says he still does not know where his voice mixes with Malek and Mercury in the final film.

Martel told iHeartradio.ca: “Even I didn’t know beforehand where they were choosing to use me. I tried to see as little as possible while work was being done on the movie so that it could be mostly a surprise for me.”

Bohemian Rhapsody DVD: Rami Malek thought THIS was a 'lost cause' in Freddie Mercury film https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-rami-malek-thought-this-was-a-lost-cause-in-freddie-mercury-film/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-rami-malek-thought-this-was-a-lost-cause-in-freddie-mercury-film/#respond Sun, 17 Feb 2019 16:50:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-rami-malek-thought-this-was-a-lost-cause-in-freddie-mercury-film/

With hindsight, it would be easy to think that the movie was always certain to be a huge success. It is now the biggest drama and biopic of all time and looks set for Oscars glory next weekend. Yet, it took over ten years to reach the big screen, lost its director during filming and critics sharpened their knives over accusations the film did not do Freddie’s ‘real’ and very complicated story proper justice. Malek is at the heart of the film and its phenomenal triumph, but even he has admitted there was one thing he did not even want to attempt.

Even the harshest critics of  have usually agreed that Ramek’s performance is extraordinary. Queen legends Brian May and Roger Taylor have confessed they sometimes forget they were watching an actor rather than their much-missed friend.

Yet, on the new home entertainment package bonus features Malek unexpectedly says: “I was never going to be Freddie Mercury, nor did I want be. I thought that was a losing cause.

“I’m going to have to sing. I’m going to have to do British dialect. I’m going to have to move all over the stage. But you don’t want to mimic Freddie. You want to understand why he did what he did.”

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: RAMI MALEK REVEALS THE BIGGEST SHOCK HE DISCOVERED ABOUT FREDDIE MERCURY

Malek spoke to Freddie’s sister Kashmira and his bandmates, he studied archive footage and had piano and movement lessons – but he revealed the performance all started with the simplest and most obvious thing.

He said: “As close as you can get with the help of hair and make-up to bring you into capturing his essence was just what I needed.”

The bonus features show the entire process of turning the actor into the icon until even Lucy Boynton, who plays Freddie’s life-long love Mary Austin and is Malek’s real-life girlfriend, said: “It’s the most exciting thing you can see as an actor to see that person disappear and become someone else. It’s just completely magical and bizarre and unnerving.”

It is very clear how seriously Malek took this daunting role. He said: “Freddie Mercury is an icon an a hero to so many  I don’t think I completely understood just how massive he is to so many people across the world. It’s an immense responsibility but one that I was very eager to take on.”

The footage from behind the scenes also shows just how close the cast and filmmakers became, and how much fun they had on set.

Malek has spoken of his understandable nerves when he had to wear some of Freddie’s more revealing lycra catsuits, but he added: “When you dress as flamboyantly as Freddie does it makes every day going into a costume fitting feel like it’s going to be a good time.”

Bohemian Rhapsody DVD reveals Rami Malek and cast were NOT happy about THIS scene https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-reveals-rami-malek-and-cast-were-not-happy-about-this-scene/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-reveals-rami-malek-and-cast-were-not-happy-about-this-scene/#respond Sat, 16 Feb 2019 06:54:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-dvd-reveals-rami-malek-and-cast-were-not-happy-about-this-scene/

Bohemian Rhapsody is currently on a triumpahnt global victory lap. The jubilant cast and crew are celebrating the vindication of enormous box office receipts and the ongoing awards season success. Yet, the very first week of filming saw major unhappiness wamong th efour lead actors. On the home entertainment special features, Queen legends Brian May and Roger Taylor reveal the most terrifying moment of the shoot for all involved when producer Graham King made a very unpopular decision and said: “They were not happy.”

opens and closes with the incredible moment Queen stunned the world at Live Aid.

It is the biggest scene in the entire movie requiring the most technical trickery and special effects. A full-size replica of the Wembley stage was built. It is the scene that could literally make or break the movie and define the performances of the cast.

It is the first thing that was filmed. Understandably, the cast were horrified.

King said: “Starting the production with Live Aid was madness. It was such a full -on thing starting at the deep end… They were not happy that Live Aid was the first week of shooting because they wanted to get their feet wet and build to it.”

“Due to weather in the UK, we wanted to get Live Aid done. So when they embraced it and accepted that I wasn’t going to change the schedule, then it became ‘Let’s celebrate it. Let’s use Live Aid as a way to celebrate Freddie’s life and the music.'”

May paid tribute to the cast: “They plunged in at the deep end that was like the pinnacle performance they had to pull off right at the beginning at the start of shooting. Which is tough but they had it down.”

The footage shows May reassuring Malek on the Live Aid set: “It’s great, it’s amazing.”

Taylor added: “We were delighted.”

The cast also accepted that the experience was a baptism of fire which united four young actors, virtual strangers, and forged them into the on screen incarnation of Queen.

The concert provides the exhilarating climax of the movie and leaves the audience on a high which has translated into multiple repeat viewings and phenomenal word of mouth.

Just as the original performance brough the world back to Queen, so the scene has taken the movie out to the world.

Bohemian Rhapsody is out now on digital and download, and on DVD and Blu-ray on March 3

Following his Best Actor wins at the and , it wasn’t a big surprise that Malek took the same gong at the BAFTAs. While he missed out on the Critics’ Choice Award to Christian Bale for Vice, Malek now looks incredibly likely to pick up his first Oscar later this month. The 37-year-old actor’s win was one of two of Bohemian Rhapsody’s seven nominations – with the other going to Sound. In his acceptance speech, Malek thanked Freddie Mercury, who he played in the film, calling him “the greatest outsider of them all.”

“You Brits, you do it so well. And it’s not lost on me how sacred your musical heritage is. So, thank you, thank you, thank you, for including me.”

He added: “I have to thank Fox and New Regency and our producers – Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan and Dexter Fletcher.

Bohemian Rhapsody: WATCH Rami Malek’s SAG Awards speech ‘I get POWER from Freddie Mercury’ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-sag-awards-speech-i-get-power-from-freddie-mercury/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-sag-awards-speech-i-get-power-from-freddie-mercury/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 09:01:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-sag-awards-speech-i-get-power-from-freddie-mercury/

Last night another big pre-Oscars awards show took place, seeing Bohemian Rhapsody nominated in two categories. While the Queen movie lost out to Black Panther in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, Malek did once again win the lead male acting award despite a two horse race with Vice’s Christian Bale. Adding to his Golden Globe win, the 37-year-old took to the stage at the SAG awards to accept his prize and once again paid tribute to Freddie Mercury. Thanking the cast first, Malek said: “And this ensemble, that is so extraordinary to me, that carried me through every moment on this film. Thank you.”

Malek continued: “I have anecdotes about what it is to be an actor and delivering pizzas, and stuff like that, but I will spare you.

“I thank Queen and Freddie Mercury. I get some power from him that is about stepping up and living your best life.

“Being exactly who you want to be and accomplishing everything you so desire.

“And I feel that, and he allows us all to feel that. So this is again for him, thank you very much.”

Queen guitarist Brian May congratulated Malek on his Instagram, writing: “Congratulations Rami – epic win ! Bri.”

Malek’s win at the SAG Awards wasn’t always a dead cert, after Christian Bale took both male acting gongs at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

The pair go head to head once again in two weeks time at the BAFTAs, before the big showdown at the Oscars on February 24.

Malek remains the favourite overall for the Academy Award, with odds of 11/8 to Bale’s 2/1.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Rami Malek talks Bryan Singer allegations – as nomination is REVOKED https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-talks-bryan-singer-allegations-as-nomination-is-revoked/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-talks-bryan-singer-allegations-as-nomination-is-revoked/#respond Fri, 25 Jan 2019 08:54:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-talks-bryan-singer-allegations-as-nomination-is-revoked/

The film stars Malek has music icon Freddie Mercury, and he is a huge frontrunner to win Best Actor at next month’s Oscars. The film itself is nominated for Best Picture after winning the top honour at the Golden Globes – but unrest is continuing to grow amid continuing reports of allegations of abuse made against Singer (which he has denied). Yesterday GLAAD revoked its nomination for Best Original Film.

Speaking on Tuesday, just days before GLAAD made its announcement and in the immediate aftermath of his Oscars nod, Malek clarified that he had no knowledge of the claims made against Singer when he was making the film.

“As far as I knew, I was considered before Bryan was even attached,” he told the LA Times.

“So I had my head down preparing for this for about a year ahead of time, and I never really looked up.

“I didn’t know much about Bryan. I think that the allegations and things were, believe it or not, honestly something I was not aware of, and that is what it is.

“Who knows what happens with that… but I think somehow we found a way to persevere through everything that was thrown our way.”

He added: “Perhaps that was Freddie himself doing it, because we wanted to make a product that was worthy of him. Who knows?

“I’m just proud that this cast and crew collectively raised their game and we depended on one another.

“It was a testament to everyone’s spirit and courage and skill. And one thing I will say about everyone — almost everyone — we never gave up. How about that?”

On his own nod at the Academy Awards, he beamed: “It is huge. It is huge. This is the cream of the crop for what we do, and to get this acknowledgment from the academy, it’s one of the most momentous moments I think I’ll have in life.”

Malek is rumoured to be playing the villain in the next James Bond movie, but this is completely unconfirmed.

The Oscars will take place next month. Bohemian Rhapsody also has multiple nominations at the BAFTAs.

The movie is still playing in cinemas.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Rami Malek on the 'DEBAUCHED' life of Freddie Mercury https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-on-the-debauched-life-of-freddie-mercury/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-on-the-debauched-life-of-freddie-mercury/#respond Sun, 30 Dec 2018 00:51:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-rami-malek-on-the-debauched-life-of-freddie-mercury/

The movie has been an enormous success worldwide with fans and will soon pass an incredible $ 700million at the box office. Many critics, though, felt it avoided the harder truths of Freddie’s ‘debauched’ life and gave a rose-tinted and weak version of his incredible but complicated life. Malek, himself, disagrees and talks about the choices made about what was shown. Everybody knows that Freddie discovered and explored his sexuality throughout his life. Everybody knows how he died. Malek talks about his pride in the “intimate” moments that were shown.

Malek told Film 4: “There’s a guy who’s questioning his sexual identity. There’s a confused kid in there, a very complicated kid – and inside him is a tempest, volatile, about to explode…

“We wanted to be as intimate as we could with his life, showing an aspect of who this person was behind closed doors.

“How a young man from humble beginnings could become one of the greatest rock stars the world has ever know. And part of one of the greatest rock bands the world has ever known.”

The movie does actually show Freddie’s troubled early gay relationships and his growing distance from the band as he experimented with drink, drugs and threw lavish parties in London, before leaving for his notorious sojourn in Berlin. But did it show enough?

Malek said; “There’s, of course, a gratuitous, illicit, hedonistic side to this film you could go down, but you want to hint at that so you can live in the joy of what this band means to so many people.

“When you hear Queen there is a smile on your face whatever the song is… So why not celebrate the band who made that song?

“Those moments when you see the creation of a song like Bohemian Rhapsody or We Will Rock You by this group of misfits who wanted to sing to the everyone at the back of the room, is something we wanted to exemplify…”

More than anything, the movie is a celebration of Freddie, of the band and of the incredible music they made.

Critics are right that there is a whole other side of Freddie’s story that needs to be told – but that is a different film, another story.

Fans are not ignorant of the harsher realities and clay feet of their idol. Freddie’s fans have never shied away from every aspect of who he was and what made him so unique and special to millions.

Bohemian Rhapsody does what it set out to do and the phenomenal response to it is the only answer the filmmakers ever needed.

Bohemian Rhapsody: What Freddie Mercury's sister REALLY thought of Rami Malek – SHOCK https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-what-freddie-mercurys-sister-really-thought-of-rami-malek-shock/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-what-freddie-mercurys-sister-really-thought-of-rami-malek-shock/#respond Fri, 28 Dec 2018 19:10:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-what-freddie-mercurys-sister-really-thought-of-rami-malek-shock/

Audiences have been left stunned as the much-missed icon lives again on the big screen. Critics have attacked the alleged omittance of any harsher truths about Freddie Mercury’s life, but fans have flocked to see the film. Ultimately the only people who really know the truth are Freddie’s family and the band. Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor have paid tribute to the way their much-missed friend seems to live and breathe again, revealing they forgot they were watching a film. However, Malek has revealed the rather unexpected reaction from Freddie’s sister, Kashmira Cooke, to his transformation.

Malek has confirmed that getting to spend time with Kasmira was key to understanding Freddie and bringing his performance to life: “I thought, ‘I have one responsibility: to do this human being justice and to make him proud and to make Queen proud.’

“I got to spend a lot of time with Kash — I call her Kash, which is a phenomenal thing I never thought I’d be doing in my life — and just being able to talk to her and hold her hand and give her a hug and have tea with her is such a gift. And to have had this experience and to feel some kinship with Freddie Mercury and to hear stories about him through his sister, it means everything to me.”

However, the first time Kashmira saw Rami in costume did not go as expected.

Malek told Jimmy Kimmel: “She got to see me as young Freddie with long hair and the teeth, make-up, the whole 1970s, early glam-rock look.”

What happened next? Malek revealed: “She laughed. As you can imagine it was an incredibly bizarre, alien moment for her.”

The overwhelmed actor added that once the shock subsided, Kash also cried: “Later on, it was a very emotional moment. On a serious note, she wrote me the most moving email, it was very powerful. To get that vote of appreciation from the people who were closest to him was everything for me.”

That vote of appreciation has continued as the movie races past $ 640million at the global box office and Malek starts to pick up the first awards season nominations.

Many more are bound to follow, with the smart money on a Best Actor Oscar nomination and, quite possibly, win.
