  • There are good, bad, and ugly outcomes for the stock market as inflation continues to weigh, Charles Schwab warned.
  • Though inflation is coming down, it could easily rebound if central banks begin cutting too soon.
  • "This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned.

Stocks could spin three ways as inflation begins to cool, Charles Schwab analysts said in a note on Monday, outlining a good, a bad, and an ugly outcome for the market.

The good: stocks could rally as central banks ease up on rate hikes. The bad: inflation could rebound and set off even more volatility. The ugly: central banks will stay hawkish and send stocks lower.

The Fed just issued its third 75-point rate hike this year, and the European Central Bank has also hiked by an unprecedented 75 points, causing stocks to recoil in volatility.

A good outcome

If inflation continues its slow descent, markets could rebound on hopes that aggressive rate hikes will end, Schwab said. US inflation cooled slightly to 8.3% in August from 9.1% in July, sparking talk that inflation may have peaked.

Some central banks have already indicated they may be nearly done with hiking rates: Brazil's central bank stopped hiking in August, and Norway's central bank suggested its most recent 50-point rate hike could be its last, or close to it, analysts said.

"Should inflation begin to recede significantly around year-end due to a softer labor market and easing housing inflation … markets may rebound on prospects for an end to the aggressive rate hikes of 2022," analysts said. They noted though that economic growth could be slowed, as demand will take a time to pick up again, and central bankers are likely to remain cautious for any rebound of inflation.

A bad outcome

But inflation could come back, if central banks ease too soon, Schwab warned. The global policy rate for developed markets excluding the US is still low historically and remains "deeply negative" — even lower than the rate that preceded the Great Recession in 2008, analysts said.

"If central banks respond to a weakening labor market and stop hiking too soon or cut rates while the real policy rate is still firmly negative, there's a chance inflation may rebound. If it does, even higher rates may be needed to quell inflation," the note said.

That would be a repeat of the 70s and 80s when central bankers pivoted monetary policy too quickly, leading to a "whipsaw" effect in stocks.

"This whipsawing pattern may support a continued environment of volatility and wide market swings as seen this year," the bank warned.

The ugly outcome

And then, there's the possibility that central banks will actually do what they say and stay hawkish until inflation is dead. In that scenario, expect another year like 2022, Schwab said.

"Stocks would have further to fall with both price-to-earnings (PE) ratios and earnings contributing to declines; any prospect of a deep recession would likely force analysts to cut earnings estimates," analysts warned.

  • Trump called the FBI "vicious monsters" controlled by left-wing radicalists at a Saturday rally.
  • Two Jan. 6 panel members warned that Trump may be inciting attacks on the FBI with that speech.
  • The attack came after the FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate and found secret government documents.

Members of the House January 6 committee said that former President Donald Trump's criticisms of the FBI at Saturday rally may be a way of inciting his supporters to violence. 

At the rally in Pennsylvania for GOP midterm candidates, Trump claimed the August 8 FBI raid at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida was part of a plot by his political foes. 

"The FBI and the Justice Department have become vicious monsters, controlled by radical left scoundrels lawyers and the media who tell them what to do … and when to do it," Trump said.

Rep. Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans sitting on the committee, said his shows Trump was deliberately seeking to stir violence. 

"Trump is attacking law enforcement and yet again using language he knows will provoke violence. Only one group of Americans has a chance to diminish this danger — Republicans," tweeted Cheney, who was recently ousted from her Wyoming congressional seat following a campaign by Trump. 

"If my fellow Republicans fail to step up to stop this, they will share the blame for all that follows."

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat on the January 6 committee, gave similar remarks in a Sunday interview with CNN.

When host Jim Acosta asked Lofgren if Trump's comments constituted incitement, she said: "Well, potentially yes."

"In the lead-up to January 6th, there were extravagant claims made meant to inflame public opinion, and that is what is happening here."

"I think it's meant to turn people against law-enforcement officers," she continued. "And we've seen that sometimes that rhetoric reaches people who are prepared to act on it."

Lofgren cited the recent case of a Trump supporter who attacked an FBI office in Cincinnati after posting messages about the Mar-a-Lago raid online. The supporter was later killed by law-enforcement officers.

The Justice Department has warned of a sharp increase in threats faced by FBI officials in the wake of the raid, and has arrested several other people it alleges to have made threats against the agency. 

Trump and his allies have unleashed a furious series of attacks on the agency following the raid. Sen. Lindsey Graham warned last week that Trump supporters would riot if the former president were indicted, prompting critics to say he was making a veiled threat.

The FBI believes Trump may have violated several laws in taking highly classified documents and other government records to Mar-a-Lago after leaving office, and that his aides tried to obstruct their investigation. 

At the same time the former president is facing multiple investigations into his bid to overturn his 2020 election defeat, with the January 6 committee saying that Trump deliberately sought to stir his supporters to attack the Capitol in an incendiary speech ahead of the riot.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the riot. On Friday, he also said he could offer pardons to all of those convicted in relation to the attack if reelected.

When the New Orleans Saints finally found their rhythm, they marched one step closer to the Super Bowl.

Using a dominant ball-control offence and a few gambles that paid off, the Saints got two touchdown passes from Drew Brees and two interceptions from Marshon Lattimore in a 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brees took the Saints on scoring drives of 92, 79 and 67 yards after falling behind 14-0. Lattimore clinched it when Nick Foles' pass from the Saints 27 deflected off usually sure-handed receiver Alshon Jeffery with about two minutes remaining. A couple dozen Saints players surged off the sideline toward the end zone in celebration, while Jeffery fell face-first to the turf in agony.

New Orleans (14-3) will host the NFC title game next week against the Rams (13-4). Los Angeles, which fell 45-35 at the Superdome in November, will try again next week, with the winner going to the Super Bowl. The Saints' win finished off a sweep of the divisional round by teams coming off byes.

Wil Lutz added two field goals for the Saints, who last got this far in 2009, when they won the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia (10-8) will not repeat as NFL champion; no team has done so since the 2004 Patriots.

This was really two games in one. Philly scored on its first two drives as the Saints could do virtually nothing right. After that, it was all New Orleans, but the resilient Eagles kept it close enough that when Lutz missed a 52-yard field goal with 2:58 remaining, they were only one-score behind.

Foles, the hero of last year's Super Bowl run, got them in position for yet another late winning score — just like last week at Chicago and last February against New England for the championship.

Then, Jeffery couldn't handle a second-down pass, and it was over.

Brees had 2-yard touchdown passes to rookie Keith Kirkwood and All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas, who had 12 receptions for 171 yards.

  • Asian shares jumped and European stocks soared, capping a tumultuous week of holiday trading in global stock markets.

The Euro Stoxx 50 and most major regional benchmarks posted gains of at least 1.2% in the first hours of trading on Friday, following a 0.4% rise in the Shanghai Composite Index.

Khawaja is set to take his place in Australia’s XI in the four-Test series opener against India, which starts on Thursday.

Arsalan Tariq Khawaja was arrested in Sydney on Tuesday following a counter-terrorism investigation. He was freed on bail amid accusations he framed a colleague with a fake terror hit list targeting senior politicians in a feud over a woman.

Usman Khawaja didn’t train with the Test squad on Wednesday but skipping the optional pre-match session is how the stylish left-hander, renowned for his relaxed demeanour, has prepared for almost all of his 35 Tests.

Coach Justin Langer suggested Khawaja is “absolutely” ready to play the first Test, noting the squad has rallied around the batsman.

“We look after each other as well as we can. One of our values is our mates,” Langer told radio station SEN.

“We’re keeping an eye on Uzzy. It was obviously a little bit of a shock for him yesterday.

“He’s got great family support, great support around him. I know his wife’s here with him and we’ll look after him.

“I’ve heard a lot of cricketers say that their actual sanctuary is out in the middle playing cricket, so while there’s a lot going on in his personal life, we’re all around him to support him.

“He’s a terrific player and usually as cool as a cucumber. I’m sure there’s a few things going on in his mind and his heart, on the outside he’ll be as cool and calm as usual.”

Adelaide was the scene of one of Khawaja’s career highlights, when he scored 145 against South Africa in 2016.

He suffered a knee injury during Australia’s previous Test, played two months ago in the UAE, and had been racing the clock to prove his fitness.

The Queensland captain demonstrated great resilience and composure throughout that recovery process, as was the case during an epic 141 in October that helped Australia salvage a draw in Dubai.

“He’s a really calm, composed young man,” Langer said.

Khawaja read a prepared statement on Tuesday, asking the media to “please respect my privacy and my family’s privacy”.
