The Hammers have made Benitez their No 1 choice to replace David Moyes, while Russian giants Zenit St Petersberg have identified the 58-year-old as Roberto Mancini’s successor. Both would be willing to meet the £6m buy-out clause in his contract, with the Hammers ready to make a formal approach given any encouragement from Benitez’ people. Benitez wants to stay at Newcastle – but only if he’s satisfied the club can match his own ambitions. And Newcastle so far have yet to convince him the two parties share the same goals. Benitez has just 12 months left on his current deal and wanted his future resolved before the end of the season. His representatives have been in talks with managing director Lee Charnley, acting on behalf of Ashley for several weeks, but little progress has been made. The former Liverpool manager wants cast-iron assurances that he can spend what cash he is given how he likes. Ashley has said that he wants Benitez to stay, but the pair have not held face-to-face talks and there is a lack of trust on Benitez’s side after three botched transfer windows. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach has never previously walked out on a contract and would be loath to do so now. But he feels the ball is firmly in Newcastle’s court and if they don’t accept his terms, it will prove to him they don’t want him to be in charge in the long-term. While Benitez has a close relationship with Toon fans, being manager of a club content to finish mid-table year is not what he is looking for. West Ham have also approached Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann but been told he is staying, while Manuel Pellegrini, currently at Chinese club Hebei China Fortune, has priced himself out of the running with demands for an £8.5m deal, on top of £5m compensation. Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca and ex-Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery have also had talks. Newcastle’s only signing this month so far has been the loan acquisition of Chelsea defender Kenedy. Express Sport understands Benitez has held crisis talks with owner Mike Ashley in a bid to secure some fresh talent with the Magpies 15th in the table and above the relegation zone on goal difference. But speking ahead of Newcastle’s clash with Burnley this evening, Benitez hopes his side will have a busy deadline day. “We have some time and we have an important game tomorrow, I will not talk about the window. I will concentrate on the game and ensure we will not lose focus on that,” he said. “We still have time I am confident we can do something. I will not spend too much time speaking about that. “Yes, we are working on names and we have worked for one month, longer than one month. “The last month we have worked on the names we had on the list, we still have some time. It’s not how disappointed I am or not, I want to concentrate on this game.” Newcastle have been linked with the likes of Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala and Feyenoord forward Nicolai Jorgensen in recent days. Benitez’s side have already seen two bids rejected by the Dutch club and Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie reckons the club could be seeing more departures than arrivals at St James’s Park today. “Rafa Benitez is still desperate for a striker on this deadline day,” he said. “In terms of departures, we could see as many as three Newcastle players leave today. “One of them is Henri Saivet who has already arrived in Turkey ahead of a loan move to Sivasspor.”
TRANSFER NEWS: LIVE DEADLINE DAY UPDATES
The Harbour City has scored a coup over its interstate rivals after luring the 16-time grand slam champion to compete in the T20-style Fast4 Showdown at Ken Rosewall Arena on January 8.
Nadal will take his place alongside Australian star Nick Kyrgios and world top five-ranked players Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev.
The 31-year-old Spaniard is currently holidaying after enjoying one of the best year’s of his career in 2017. Nadal began the season at the Brisbane International and went on to claim the French and US Open titles to move into outright second on the grand slam winners list behind Roger Federer (19), winner of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
With Fast4 to be played at Sydney Olympic Park for the first time next month, Nadal will resume his rivalry with Kyrgios, after beating the 22-year-old in the final of the China Open in October.
“Rafael Nadal is a superstar, not just in tennis but in international sport and it will be fantastic to welcome him back to Sydney to play FAST4 Tennis, a format that was pioneered here in the Harbour City,” NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said.
“He completes a stellar line-up for the event and I have no doubt fans will travel from far and wide to see these players in action and experience everything our city has to offer in summer.”
The nine-year gap between Nadal’s first year-end No. 1 season in 2008 and this year is a record. Among other marks in reaching No. 1 for the first time since 2013, Nadal also became the first player:
*Over 30 to finish the year as world No. 1;
*To hold, lose and regain the year-end No. 1 on three occasions (no one has done it twice);
*To finish No. 1 four times in non-consecutive years; and
*To finish in the top spot four years since he last achieved the feat.
World No. 21 Kyrgios, a renowned lover of innovative tennis formats, is looking forward to travelling to Sydney and a possible rematch with Nadal.
“Playing the FAST4 Showdown was a lot of fun in Sydney and I’m looking forward to playing again,” Kyrgios said.
The Australian said he enjoys FAST4’s quick, high-pressure playing format.
“FAST4 is a bit different to what we usually face on tour. It brings the pressure points or big points earlier which is fun to play, and also a lot of fun for the crowd — it’s fast and exciting.
“It’s no secret I really enjoy the atmosphere of a big crowd and playing FAST4 this year was a fun experience. It’s great to promote this format and be a part of it.”
Tennis NSW CEO and Sydney International Tournament Director Lawrence Robertson said the line-up for 2018 is exciting for tennis fans.
“The FAST4 Showdown already boasts three of the world’s most exciting tennis players in Dimitrov, Zverev and Kyrgios, and to add the best player in the world — Nadal — to the mix is going to take the event to an even higher level,” Robertson said.
“I’m really excited to welcome the FAST4 Showdown to Ken Rosewall Arena at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre as part of what is already going a fantastic week of tennis in January.
“Each we’ve seen the players find fresh enjoyment of the sport through FAST4 as it allows them to perform in a way they can’t day-in-day-out on the tour. It was terrific to see Nadal really get into the spirit of the event in 2017 and Kyrgios is one of tennis’ ‘early adopters’ of alternative formats so he is a perfect fit for our event.
Tickets for FAST4 Showdown are on sale now via Ticketek. Adult prices start at
$ 39 and $ 10 for children. Family passes start at $ 88.

]]>Nadal has improved his winning streak to 16 matches after beating fourth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-5 7-6 (7-3) in Saturday’s semi-final. Top-seeded Nadal, winning a tour-best sixth title of the season at last week’s China Open, has beaten Cilic in five of their six matches.
The Spaniard hadn’t lost his serve in 32 games but Cilic broke him twice – in the sixth and 10th games of the second set.
At 30-40 in the sixth game, Nadal netted a forehand volley to surrender his serve for the first time, and responded by twice angrily banging his racket on his leg, just above the knee.
Nadal failed to take advantage of his first match point when he made a forehand error at 40-30 in the 10th game, and went on to have his serve broken. Leading 6-3 in the second-set tie-breaker, Nadal prevailed on his second match point when Cilic netted a service return.
Nadal, a Shanghai finalist in 2009, will play the winner of the semi-final between second-seeded Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro. The Shanghai Masters wants to expand to a 10 or 11- day event, increase its draw size from 64 to 96 and raise prize money to more than $ US10 million ($ A13 million), starting in 2019.
The ATP board is expected to discuss Shanghai’s request next month.
Murray has chosen Brisbane to launch his 2018 campaign rather than the richer ATP Doha tournament he has played in recent years.
The former dual Wimbledon champion is absent from the ongoing US Open due to a hip injury which clouds his schedule for the rest of 2017.
Murray, 30, will drop one spot in the rankings to No.3 next week and joins in the Brisbane entries top-ranked Rafael Nadal.
He was the 2012 and 2013 Brisbane International champion.
Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal play later today and will meet in the semi-finals if both progress.
Overnight Venus Williams secured her place in the women’s semi-finals and faces fellow American Sloane Stephens in the last four.
Kevin Anderson spoiled the American party in the men’s draw though by beating Sam Query 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
The 17th-seeded Querrey can blame himself for a meltdown in the first set tiebreak, where he lost five points in a row to allow Anderson into the lead under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 31-year-old Anderson, seeded 28th, will face Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta for a spot in Sunday’s final.

09.45: Venus Williams has credited Serena Williams with carrying the American flag.
The US Open could see all four semi-final slots go to Americans this year.
Venus Williams takes on Sloane Stephens after both coming through quarter-finals yesterday.
And Maddison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe are in action today and could make it a clean sweep.
And Venus was quick to praise her sister who is out of action after giving birth over the weekend.
“I think we have to give some credit to Serena,” Venus said.
“There was a time in tennis when all my rivals were American.
“So I love seeing these young American’s coming up and playing big and focussed and I would love that again.
“The top four, top five in the world all playing each other in semi-finals – that would be huge. I would love that.”
09.30: Juan Martin del Potro is excited to come up against Roger Federer again.
Del Potro beat Federer in the US Open eight years ago but knows the 19-time Grand Slam winner is back towards the top of his game.
“It’s always a pleasure to play the greatest guy in history,” Del Potro said.
“I admire him, too. Everybody loves him. It’s going to be an interesting match to play.”
09.05: Kevin Anderson believes he was able to reset his game during the intense second set tie-breaker against local favourite Sam Querrey which eventually helped him prevail in the four-set thriller in the U.S. Open quarter-final on Tuesday.
The 28th seed, who had taken the first set also in a tiebreak, benefited from his opponent’s meltdown to set up a set point at 8-7 after falling 6-1 down, but Querrey saved it and eventually levelled the tie.
“You know, those matches are tough. I feel like I just try to play each point as best as I can,” Anderson said.
“I felt in the second set, after being 6-1 down and the next minute it’s 6-All, obviously a very tough point to lose that 6-All point. I don’t want to play too many points like that.
“But I feel like that’s where I was able to really reset. It’s almost tougher, it would have been better off losing that tiebreak almost 7-1 than coming so close to actually being two sets to love up.
“I felt I did a fantastic job resetting. These matches, it just comes to a point here and there. Fortunately, I was able to win a couple more points than him tonight.”
08.40: Sam Querrey insists he’s happy to have reached the quarter-finals despite defeat to Kevin Anderson last night.
Anderson beat the last home hope in the men’s draw leaving Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens in the women’s draw.
But Querrey still thinks he had a good tournament.
(I’m) pretty happy,” Querrey said. “At the beginning of the week, if you said I would have made quarters, I probably would have signed up for that.
“I know that bottom half of the draw was open, but you can’t say 63 guys blew an opportunity. Only one guy can go through, and Kevin’s pretty tough.”
8.15: Martin Del Potro has had a sickness scare ahead of his quarter-final with Roger Federer.
The Argentine admits he hasn’t been feeling well this week but hopes to be in a better condition for tonight’s game.
He said: “Hopefully my day off [Tuesday] I can recovery a little bit more.
“Then I will see if I’m ready to play in good conditions against Roger.”
7.45: Kevin Anderson spoiled the American party in the men’s draw though by beating Sam Query 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
Anderson’s win ended the U.S. presence in the men’s draw while Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams have both qualified for the last four in the women’s draw.
7.35: Venus Williams stayed on course for her third US Open title by beating Petra Kvitova overnight.
Williams faces fellow American Sloane Stephens in the last four.

Rafa Benitez has vented his transfer frustrations throughout the summer, but Newcastle could be set for a big spend before the summer deadline.
The Magpies have spent around £35million during the window with Jacob Murphy taking up a £12m chunk after joining from Norwich.
Several big Premier League names and rising foreign stars have been linked – but who are Newcastle most likely to land?

The Toon have started the season poorly, losing to Tottenham 2-0 on the opening day and 1-0 to fellow promoted side Huddersfield yesterday.
Benitez has been vocal in his unhappiness at the transfer business he has been able to complete at Newcastle this summer.
But Carragher, who played under Benitez for six years whilst the Spaniard was at Liverpool, says his former boss is not going about it the right way.
The former England centre-back says his negative demeanour is rubbing off on his players and that needs to change.
“Rafa Benitez is a God really to Newcastle fans,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“They’re writing books about him, the way he brought them up, he’s integrated himself into the city with his work.
“But his negativity, I think, is rubbing off on the whole club.
“The supporters, all they’re chanting for is Rafa Benitez, there’s no players, so you can see how they feel about him but there’s got to be more of an upbeat mood.
“What he’s basically saying is the players he’s got aren’t good enough but 80-90 per cent of that squad, those are who you are going to need to keep you up.
“You need to somehow lift them as well, it’s far too negative and it has to change.”
Newcastle’s next league game is against West Ham this Saturday (3pm).
Benitez has made a number of signings, headlined by the £12million capture of Jacob Murphy from Norwich and Florian Lejeune from Eibar for £8.7m.
But the Spaniard admits he is frustrated that more has not been done to improve last season’s Championship winners ahead of Sunday’s opener against Tottenham.
“I am not happy but at the same time for me it’s a challenge,” Benitez said on Sky Sports. “I try to do my best.”
Benitez said inflated prices in the transfer market were a big part of the problem, but also said the Magpies were paying the price for making a slow start to the summer.
“It is very hard, the prices are crazy,” he said.
“We missed some targets at the beginning and we’re paying for that. Hopefully we can find solutions and bring what we need. It’s not what you want, it’s what you need.”
When Benitez committed to stay at Newcastle at the end of last season he was promised “every last penny” by club owner Mike Ashley to invest in the squad, but the reality has not been so simple.
“When I decided to stay for me it was a challenge,” he said.
“I’m not totally happy with what we did, but I will try to do my best. I’m working very hard with the people in the club to try to improve what we have at the moment.”
However, the 57-year-old deflected a question regarding his future with a joke.
“It’s very difficult for me because my Chinese is not good enough,” he said, referencing links with the Chinese Super League.
“I am trying to do my best right now. It is something you cannot control but at the moment I am fully committed to doing the best that I can.”

Tennis: Novak Djokovic survives his first real scare of the French Open.

Rafael Nadal.
ANDRE Agassi rates Roger Federer’s miracle Australian Open victory as even more incomprehensible than Rafael Nadal’s push this week for a record 10th French Open crown.
At Roland Garros to coach Novak Djokovic, the American says while statistics – for once – accurately convey the staggering magnitude of Nadal’s feat, Federer’s Melbourne Park success is harder to quantify.
“This is one of those scenarios where the statistics alone put Nadal’s French Open achievements into perspective,” the former world No 1 and eight-time major winner said.

“To win the French Open once is a herculean performance – he’s trying to win it for a 10th time.
“It’s just remarkable.
“I think the harder thing to put into perspective is what Federer accomplished in Australia.
“I mean six months away from the game, the competition and at his age (35) and he goes out there and wins the way he did with multiple five-setters.
“That’s a little bit harder to tangibleise (sic) but winning 10 times – winning nine times, forget about 10 times – all you have to do is write that down on a piece of paper.
“It puts into perspective.”
In Paris as a Longines Future Tennis Aces ambassador, Agassi revealed his wife and fellow former champion Steffi Graf had been pivotal in his return to the circuit in a coaching capacity.
The Nevadan said he is frequently telephoned for advice and Graf encouraged him to get back on tour – albeit briefly – with Djokovic.

Agassi said the world No 2 could still improve, despite recently turning 30, and can easily add to his 12 majors.
“He’s a spectacular player who can get through difficult times even if he’s not necessarily on point but I think that match made him better in a lot of way,” Agassi said.
“When you’re out there on a tennis court, you have to know what makes you good and you have to rely on it.
“To succeed by going up and down or playing better than you have to, that’s one of the hardest things to do on a tennis court.
“Novak, quite frankly, just has to meet everybody where they are, introduce themselves, raise the stakes a little bit and ask them to do a little bit more.
“I gotta hunch he can do it easier than most of the players he plays.”
Agassi agrees with Boris Becker that Federer is primed to land an eighth Wimbledon next month despite not playing since March.
“I’m gonna guess that Federer is better at making decisions for himself than I would be from this vantage point,” Agassi said.

“At first glance it does seem like a long time away from the game.
“In my experience, playing a little bit on the clay helped me prepare for the grass just because it kept me in my mindset and kept me in my discipline.
“But Federer’s proven me wrong so many times.
“He’s simply stopped surprising me but he continually amazes me.
“And to watch him go to Wimbledon, it wouldn’t shock me if he goes in there as if nothing has ever happened.”
Agassi said he was employing some of the wisdom passed on by Australian coach Darren Cahill.
“I think I learned from him in coaching from years of working with him than anyone,” Agassi said.
“Even now, he has a lot to contribute.
“He was so quick to want to learn me. That taught me a lot about myself and now in this new role trying to help Novak, I try to learn him.
