Enlarge / A 1983-era TRS-80 Model 100 as an action hero, dramatically exploding onto the scene. (credit: Radio Shack / Benj Edwards)
Faced with a broken Radio Shack laptop from 1983, IEEE Spectrum editor Stephen Cass didn’t throw it away. Instead, he pulled out the logic board and replaced it with a modern microcontroller so he could control the vintage screen. Cass wrote about his adventure in detail for Spectrum last week.
Cass performed his operation on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100—one of the first laptops ever produced—which features a one-piece “slate” form designed by Kyocera and released as the NEC PC-8201 in Japan. Its claim to fame was not only its small portable size (at 2 inches thick and 3.9 lbs), but having a great keyboard paired with its ability to run for up to 20 hours on four AA batteries.
The Model 100 included a 2.4 MHz Intel 80C85 CPU, 8 to 32K of RAM, and an eight-line, 40-character monochrome LCD with no backlight. It doesn’t sound like much compared to today’s portable beasts, but journalists loved the Model 100 because they could comfortably write stories on the go using its built-in text editor. It also included Microsoft BASIC, a terminal program, and an address book in ROM.

Radio and TV host Rush Limbaugh, one of the leading voices of the conservative movement over the last 30 years, has died at the age of 70.
Limbaugh died on Wednesday after a battle with advanced lung cancer. He announced his diagnosis to listeners of his radio show back in February 2020; his wife, Kathryn, broke the news of his passing on Wednesday’s radio broadcast.
Working in radio since he was a teen, Limbaugh rose to prominence with his self-titled radio show, which entered national syndication in 1988. Limbaugh promoted conservative viewpoints and railed against the liberal media, making Bill and Hillary Clinton his main targets when Bill was elected President in 1992. (He was so influential, when Republicans took control of Congress in 1994, the freshman class awarded Limbaugh an honorary membership in their caucus.)
Limbaugh’s radio show spawned a self-titled TV series as well, which aired in syndication from 1992 to 1996. (The show was produced by future Fox News CEO Roger Ailes.) He also had a brief, ill-fated stint as a commentator on ESPN’s NFL coverage in 2003, leaving the network after stirring controversy by criticizing Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and insisting that “the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.”
Limbaugh was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Trump during Trump’s State of the Union speech in February 2020, in recognition of his “decades of tireless devotion to our country,” Trump said.

Wanda Maximoff (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are still stuck in an eerie alternate reality, but someone seems to be investigating from the outside. Eagle-eyed Marvel aficionados may have deciphered who’s trying to contact the supernatural superhero in the second episode of WandaVision on Disney Plus.
Some observant comic book enthusiasts seem to have exposed Randall Park’s first appearance as Agent Jimmy Woo in the second episode of WandaVision.
While the Fresh off the Boat star is confirmed to be joining the series in a more physical role, Agent Woo appears to be trying to contact Wanda via an ominous radio signal.
Episode two of the series leaps forward in time to the 1960s, and kicks off when Wanda and Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) attend a meeting for the women of the neighbourhood, led by the uptight Dottie (Emma Caulfield Ford).
Wanda’s illusions grind to a halt when a mysterious voice asks ‘Who’s doing this to you, Wanda?’ from a nearby wireless.

Marvel fans are convinced that’s the voice of Jimmy Woo, now working for the intelligence organisation known as S.W.O.R.D.
One perceptive viewer summed up the theory on a recent Reddit thread, following the premiere of WandaVision’s first two episodes last Friday.
They said: “That voice over the airwaves was definitely Jimmy Woo from Ant Man and the Wasp (Randall Park).”
Woo made his first appearance in the Ant-Man sequel, where he was established as a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent whom the FBI recruited to be Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) parole officer.
As the mystery unravels over the next four episodes, Agent Woo is likely to make further appearances as more of S.W.O.R.D.’s investigation into Wanda’s hallucinations is revealed.
Moreover, the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe is notorious for wrapping up its films with post-credit stingers to tease the Avengers’ upcoming battles.
Having already built a rapport with Scott Lang/Ant-Man, his role in WandaVision could neatly set up the tiny hero’s next adventures with his partner Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly).
Randall Park is speculated to make another appearance in the upcoming sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will also set up the next Avengers-level threat, Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror.

As the first entry into the MCU since 2019, WandaVision could revitalise the blockbuster franchise even more with a surprise cameo from the two Ant-Man stars.
Meanwhile, while Woo is speculated to have been reinvented as an agent of S.W.O.R.D., which is connected to S.H.I.E.L.D., the same fan offered an alternative theory.
They continued: “Guessing that the FBI got involved in some missing persons’ cases and that intersected with Wanda’s infatuation with this reality where she can have Vision back.
“Dottie and all these people may have just been a genuine suburb that got taken hostage inadvertently.”
It’s still unclear if Wanda is in charge of her idyllic new reality, but S.W.O.R.D. definitely seems to be trying to breach her powerful illusions.
Fans got their first glimpse of the new organisation when Wanda noticed its logo brandished across an uncanny, red toy helicopter she found in the second black-and-white episode.
Another episode is set to air this Friday, so MCU fans will undoubtedly be keeping their eyes open for more references to the world beyond Wanda’s strange new reality.
WandaVision continues Fridays on Disney Plus.
The Voice judge Olly Murs has emerged as one of the most popular guesses among ITV viewers for The Masked Singer’s Robin in recent weeks thanks to the disguised act’s show-stopping performances. Renowned for his singing vocals and charismatic stage presence, Olly appears to fit the bill – something Heart radio host Mark Wright was keen to put to the singer on his show today. However, instead of getting an answer, Olly hung up the phone to avoid any further grilling on the subject, sending the rumour mill into meltdown.
So far on The Masked Singer, guesses for Robin from the judging panel have ranged from boxer Amir Khan to EastEnders’ Dean Gaffney to chart-topper Bruno Mars.
However, it’s former X Factor finalist Olly who seems to be one of the most popular possible culprits performing under Robin’s disguise with fans.
And despite initially denying the rumours to pal and former TOWIE star Mark on his radio show on Thursday, the host was left convinced he’d caught him out by getting him to perform a rendition of Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling – the same song Robin performed on Saturday.
The debate began as Mark grilled Olly: “So listen, I’m gonna have this out with you Olls, right. The Masked Singer, you know The Masked Singer, don’t you?”

Olly confirmed he did, adding: “It’s on before The Voice, it’s the support act for the main show.”
The pair shared a laugh before Mark admitted he too has had numerous tweets from fans asking if it’s him behind the Robin mask.
However, the Heart radio host had a theory of his own that it was instead Olly performing.
“You are favourite [with the bookmakers] to be the Robin,” Mark informed his pal. “And there’s a reason that makes sense because people say me and you sound like each other.”
However, a few moments later, Mark then played a clip from Robin’s performance of the same song to compare the two vocals.
Adamant he could hear similarities between Olly and Robin, Mark asked The Voice judge to perform the hit one more time.
Olly, however, had other ideas as he replied: “Mate, I’ve got to go, sorry.”
Listeners heard Olly put the phone after coming under the microscope by Mark, as the Heart host joked: “We’ve stitched him!”
“I think we’ve got him,” Mark excitedly said to his listeners – but is Olly really the one under Robin’s mask?
A number of fans seem to think so as several replied to Heart’s official Twitter account applauding Mark’s detective skills.
“Oh, Mark what have you done? [cry laughing emoji],” one fan replied, with a second adding: “Well played mate [wink emoji].”
Fans will have to wait until Robin is unmasked on the ITV show to find out for sure.
The Masked Singer continues Saturday on ITV.
Award-winning comedian Peter Kay has been relatively off the showbiz radar in recent years following the cancellation of his nationwide stand-up tour back in 2017. Despite two new episodes of his BBC comedy Car Share in 2018, fans have been rather starved of new material from the star in recent years. But today, he bucked that trend as Cat Deeley took over from Graham Norton for a one-off broadcast on Radio 2.
The Phoenix Nights star joined Cat for a lengthy and uplifting chat to kick-off 2021.
Peter and Cat shared a laugh as they reminisced about their careers in showbusiness as well as what life has been like amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The chat came as Cat filled in for Claudia Winkleman who’s set to take over in the time slot from Graham Norton following his departure from Radio 2.
And it was a welcome one with some fans even calling for Peter and Cat to spend more time on the airwaves together.

Taking to Twitter after the chat, one fan said: “Listening to Peter Kay on the radio love him so much!”
A second echoed: “@catdeeley could you and @peterkay_co_uk be the next Radio or TV double act? You were absolutely brill on @BBCRadio2 earlier. More please!”
“If you want a good laugh today then listen to @peterkay_co_uk chatting to @catdeeley on @BBCRadio2 today. It’s great to hear him back on form,” encouraged a third fan.
While a fourth concurred: “Absolutely love Peter Kay, brilliant to hear him this morning with Cat Deeley.”
After Cat insisted it “didn’t work” to have him sing in the movies, Peter recalled how he mistook the story’s plot for real-life when meeting the cast of the stage production.
“I went to watch Mamma Mia!, the stage version, and I loved it and I don’t want to ruin it, but she gets married at the end,” the comedian began.
“They go off into the moonlight to I Have A Dream (and) I got a bit emotional. Anyway, I knew the stage manager and she said, ‘Come back’.”
Peter detailed how he headed backstage to meet the cast only to congratulate the leading star on her nuptials.
“I went back [stage] and the main girl she said, ‘Lovely to meet you’ and I said, ‘Congratulations,’ and she said, ‘Why?’”
Peter then reminded the actor that she had just got married before having to correct himself when he made the realisation it was just acting.
“She looked at me as if to say, ‘This is a play, this is a musical and this isn’t real life’,” Peter added as Cat let out a laugh.
The chat is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
The Irishman stunned fans after his bombshell announcement, which confirmed his final slot on Radio 2 will be December 19 – around 10 years after his first show on the station. In a gushing statement, the comic – who was revealed to be the BBC‘s third highest earner – said he was “obviously sad to be stepping away” and that he would miss being “part of the listeners’ lives”. He also paid tribute for being “part of the Wogan House family”, a reference to the iconic broadcaster Terry Wogan, who he replaced as commentator on Eurovision, and was a staple of Radio 2.
But in a surprise admission, the 57-year-old once brushed off suggestions he could replace another BBC legend, as he faced calls to step into Sir Bruce Forsyth’s shoes as a host on Strictly Come Dancing.
At the time, Sir Bruce had announced he would be standing down from the BBC One show amid health issues, and in 2014 he was temporarily replaced by now-co-hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
Laughing off the claims, Graham told The Sun that he “wouldn’t jump at the chance” if he was asked.
He added: “I really enjoy the show but it’s a very tough gig.
“It’s very hard for a new person to take over… and I’m quite lazy.”
Graham began his career on Channel 4, and became a household name thanks to his appearance on the celebrated comedy Father Ted.
He has amassed a wealth of awards throughout his television career and was revered for his performances hosting the British Academy Television Awards.
Previously, Graham has spoken about how the BBC is perceived, especially some of its stars, and how he believes the press decide who should be targeted.
JUST IN: Graham Norton QUITS role on BBC Radio 2 after 10 years
He cited examples like Jonathan Ross, who resigned from the broadcaster after he made lewd comments on actor Andrew Sachs’ answering machine regarding his granddaughter Georgina Baillie while on BBC Radio 2
The row sparked national outcry, with papers, such as the Daily Mail, demanding Jonathan move away, which he eventually did before Ofcom fined the BBC £150,000.
He said that after decades on the TV he had not been targeted, but added during an interview with RTE’s The Late Late Show in 2016: “It’s like there’s a whiteboard in the office and they have names on it and they’re like who are we going to get next.
“People like Jonathan Ross – boom. Jeremy Clarkson – boom. Chris Evans – boom. So I’m almost offended they haven’t come for me!”

In his statement regarding his resignation, Graham did confirm he would continue working with the BBC including on Friday Night with Graham Norton, Eurovision and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, describing the broadcaster as his “perfect TV home”.
Reflecting on his time with BBC Radio 2, Helen Thomas, head of the station, added: “For the past decade, Graham has made Saturday mornings his own on Radio 2.
“His sparkling interviews, as well as his brilliant shows from the Eurovision host city each May, have kept millions of listeners entertained each week.
“On behalf of Radio 2 listeners, and everyone in Wogan House, we’d like to thank him and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
If some of the above names don’t make the line-up, it seems bookmakers are putting their guesses forward as to who could take part.
Boyzone member and former Coronation Street star Keith Duffy, 46, is Coral’s favourite to be venturing to Wales.
The singer’s odds of signing up currently stand at 1/4, with his chances of winning being 5/1 as spokesperson John Hill said: “Keith Duffy has appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and Splash so he isn’t afraid of reality TV.
“His next challenge looks set to be on I’m A Celeb where he is odds-on to be a contestant this year.
“No matter what the new camp can throw at Duffy, we think he can handle it, and make him one of the early favourites to be crowned the winner of the series.”
I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! begins Sunday, November 15 at 9pm on ITV.

Radio 2 listeners regularly tune into Paul O’Grady on Sunday evenings but fans of the star will be disappointed to learn he will temporarily stepping back from the role due to worries of contracting the coronavirus, for which the star is “in the at-risk group” for.
Paul, 64, can currently be found on the airwaves where he presents his own Radio 2 show every Sunday evening.
However, it was announced tonight he has decided to take some time away from the Sunday evening show due to the spread of COVID-19.
A statement posted by his Radio 2 show’s producer, Malcolm Prince, detailed the popular radio host would not be presenting his show.
“As Paul is in one of the at-risk groups with a long-term condition, he is following the latest advice from the NHS and staying at home.”

It comes after the BBC has already announced several popular outputs that have been affected by the virus.
Yesterday, it was revealed that Radio 4 soap opera, The Archers, had halted production for the time being.
Jeremy Howe, Editor of The Archers released a statement via Twitter informing fans of the decision to stop recording.
He said: “For the time being we have enough episodes of #TheArchers recorded to keep taking listeners to Ambridge as usual for the weeks ahead.
“But, like everyone else, we are faced with an unprecedented situation.
“We’re working on plans for beyond this given there are significant challenges and the safety and wellbeing of #TheArchers production team and cast are paramount.”
Addressing the future of the show, Jeremy assured listeners they would be kept in the loop about any decisions made.
Jeremy added: “We’re sure listeners will understand this and we’ll update as plans become clearer.”
Controversial talk radio host Don Imus, whose popular show was simulcast on MSNBC and Fox Business for more than a decade, has died at the age of 79.
Imus passed away on Friday in College Station, Texas after being hospitalized on Christmas Eve, according to our sister site Variety.
Starting his radio career back in 1968, Imus hosted a daily talk show titled Imus in the Morning that originated in New York City and was eventually syndicated nationwide, carried by dozens of stations and becoming one of the country’s most widely heard radio shows. A rowdy mix of politics and comedy along with celebrity interviews, Imus in the Morning was picked up by cable news network MSNBC in 1996 and simulcast there until 2007, when a controversy stemming from Imus referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos” led the network to axe the show. Fox Business picked up the Imus in the Morning simulcast in 2009 and aired it until 2015.
Imus continued to host his radio show until he retired in early 2018, after a half-century on the air. He was also one of VH1’s original disc jockeys when the music network launched in 1985. Imus was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1989 and the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 1996.

The BBC has been slammed today after the organisation released a list revealing its highest-paid presenters. While Gary Lineker remains the top earner on an eye-watering £1.75million a year, there was an increase in the number of BBC stars on £150,000 or more. Radio 4 Today Programme hosts John Humphrys and Nick Robinson are among the corporation’s biggest earners.
The BBC salaries bill wet up from £19.77million to £21.77million in the last financial year.
This increase was criticised by some, as it comes just weeks after the move to stop free TV licences for over 75s was announced.
BBC director general Tony Hall confirmed the total talent bill had risen by £10million but argued it was a smaller proportion of total programming costs.

He wrote in a blog: “They would earn significantly more elsewhere – and recent departures to commercial rivals show this argument isn’t hollow.
“The simple truth is we have spent more than ever on content, but the amount we have spent proportionally on talent has come down.
“But more importantly, whenever we ask the public whether they want big stars on the BBC they say yes.
“They say yes because they are talented and entertaining.
“They also say yes as it means they are getting big value from the BBC.”
