Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford secured a spot in next month’s Grand Prix Final by taking bronze in the pairs competition at Skate America on Saturday in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Canadian duo led after Friday’s short program but slipped to third place with their free skate and finished with a total score of 215.68, well off their personal best of 231.99. Meagan Duhamel, Eric Radford end up with bronze at Skate America8:07 Duhamel and Radford earned gold at Skate Canada International in October. Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany stormed from third to the top of the podium with a winning score of 223.13, while China’s Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang earned 219.20 total points to hold on to second place. Germans Aljona Savchenko, Bruno Massot golden at Skate America9:04 Canadian pair Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro were also in the field and placed sixth at 187.81. American skater Nathan Chen locked up a spot in his second straight Grand Prix Final, winning the men’s competition at Skate America despite a disappointing free skate Saturday. Countryman Adam Rippon finished second and also qualified despite falling and dislocating his right shoulder on his first jump. Chen struggled on a few of his five quad jump attempts, including a fall on a quad flip early in the program. The 18-year-old emerging star was second behind Rippon in the free skate with 171.76 points and won with a two-day total of 275.88s. Chen finished second at last year’s Final. This year’s event is next month in Japan. Rippon skated almost flawlessly after popping his arm back into place on the ice, punching his Final ticket with a 177.41 and 266.45 total. Russia’s Sergei Voronov was third at 257.49 and also earned a Final spot. Liam Firus was the top Canadian skater, finishing in eighth place. Israel’s Daniel Samohin withdrew after dislocating his left shoulder on a fall. Samohin’s arm dangled at his side as he skated off, and at least one young girl in the stands cried as he left. Live coverage on CBCSports.ca continues with the short in both ice dance (7:30 p.m. ET) and ladies (9:20 p.m. ET). The event wraps on Sunday with the free programs in ice dance (1:55 p.m. ET) and ladies (4 p.m. ET) and the gala exhibition (7:30 p.m. ET). Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford lead after the pairs short program at Skate America on Friday night, putting them in strong position to win a second Grand Prix event. Duhamel and Radford scored 75.37, beating China’s Yu Xiaoyu Yu and Zhang Hao at 73.67. Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot were third at 72.55 despite Massot’s fall on a triple salchow. While Canada’s Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro finished seventh with 59.97. Duhamel said the 2014 Grand Prix Final winners felt “tight,” and they struggled with their twist. The two-time world champions won at Skate Canada this year but were disappointed to lose levels on three elements Friday. The Canadians didn’t think they’d stepped back. “Overall, this was a lot better than Skate Canada,” Duhamel said, “and it’s going to be better at the Grand Prix Final, and it will be better at the Olympics.” Massot was competing for the first time since passing his German citizenship test. The French-born skater got the news Thursday, clearing the way for him to compete at Pyeongchang. He was held out of the Sochi Games because his partner failed to gain French citizenship in time. “It’s really different,” said Massot, “because I don’t have this now anymore in my head, this question like, ‘I will be blocked again, or not?”‘ Massot fell on his jump and the pair struggled with a spin Friday, too. “The pressure was here,” Massot said. “I was really concentrating, but I would say that just today my legs … difficult to be flexible on the ice.” American skaters Nathan Chen and Adam Rippon gave the home crowd what it wanted Friday night: Chen with a pair of powerful quad jumps, and Rippon with what he calls a “trashy dance-club program.” “I think we made a good team. I think we’d make an even better Olympic team,” Rippon said with a big smile. The fans and judges at Skate America agree. Chen and Rippon hold the top spots following the men’s short program at the last Grand Prix event before the Final. Chen leads with 104.12 points, and Rippon is next at 89.04. Both Olympic hopefuls are still trying to qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Japan next month. Chen landed two quad jumps, including one in combination with a triple toe loop. Chen will attempt five quads in the free skate Saturday night. An 18-year-old breakout star with gold medal aspirations at the Pyeongchang Olympics, he became the first skater ever to do five quads in one program at nationals in January. His biggest challenge Friday: a nick in the blade of his skate “It’s something that we’re addressing right now and it should be fixed for tomorrow,” Chen said. Rippon gasped when his score was revealed after one of the best performances of his career. He skated to “Let Me Think About It” with flair, and the audience reacted. Fans clapped along as the 28-year-old skated, and he egged them on by pumping his arms after finishing. “I like to show off,” he said. The home favourite did not perform his signature Rippon lutz — a triple jump he performs with both arms over his head. He said he hasn’t tried it since separating his right shoulder in practice trying to mimic Chen’s choreography over the summer. Jin Boyang of China entered with the most Grand Prix points in fifth place, but he scaled back his program and finished with a 77.97. Jin said through a translator he has a sprained ankle. Russia’s Sergei Voronov is in third place at 87.51. Ross Minor of the U.S. is eighth with 71.59. HELSINKI, Finland — All eyes were on Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford at the final practice Thursday before the short program at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland. We were all looking for the signs of the hip injury that Eric had disclosed the day before. The first thing that struck me was a change from side-by-side triple Lutz to the less valuable side-by-side triple toe jumps. They looked tentative and a little unsure. In her Player’s Own Voice blog for CBC Sports, Meagan talked about their loss of confidence after a season of sub-par performances in competition. What factor would this injury play into that mental state? I got the chance to catch up with Meagan in the stands during the ice dance event. One might think that the intensity of the training about which she spoke might have done something to exacerbate the injury, but Meagan said that wasn’t the case. “We were 100 per cent healthy coming into this competition,” she said. “It was only after we arrived that Eric felt a spasm in the muscles of his right hip. We had a plan coming into worlds and this had nothing to do with any lack of confidence that I felt over the season. I will say that this threw us off, mentally, a lot.” The seventh-place finish in the short program was a huge disappointment as the free program loomed in front of them. I wondered if there was a goal beyond capturing a third world title? “Our goal was always to come to worlds to have a season’s-best performance and to end up on the podium. We knew that we had to make adjustments based on the fact that Eric was experiencing pain doing the Lutz jumps and spins. “We couldn’t change the sit spin and pair spin, but we could make an adjustment with the side-by-side triple toes.” Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford reflect on their last-minute changes1:23 Eric mentioned to Brenda Irving after the free that they had considered withdrawing earlier in the day before their skate, which Meghan elaborated on. “We had a big meeting with our coaches and Mike [Slipchuk, high Performance Director of Skate Canada] because Eric was stressed that if he got into the spins he might not be able to get out and then what would happen? “We were reassured by the medical team who never told us or the coaches that we had to withdraw and that by skating, there wouldn’t be anything that we would be doing that would harm or cause permanent damage to Eric’s hip. That made the decision to skate the long more clear.” Canada’s Meagan Duhamel, Eric Radford place 7th after pairs short program3:42 Their decision to skate in the long – combined with Lubov Iliushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch’s result – has resulted in the maximum three spots for Canadian pairs at next year’s Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. Pushing through a performance that is not going to yield you what you want is tough. Doing it when you know it will be painful has to be worse. “It’s a funny thing, but stressing about it was in some ways worse. It was really just very bad timing. If it had happened last week, Eric would have taken a couple of days off and it would have been fine. We were hoping that we would be fine and that it would go away after a good night’s sleep. “Secretly, though, we didn’t quite believe that was going to happen.” When Meagan said in her blog ‘no regrets’ at Worlds, I wondered if this would still be the case after all. “How could I have regrets? You do the best you can. You go to bed knowing that you did all that you could and this trip to worlds is no different.” There had to be some source of pride for Meagan and Eric in Helsinki and I asked her what had made her most proud from this unique and challenging experience. Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford finish 7th at ISU Worlds8:19 “I have to say that we came here with a job to do and when we had to change our game plan we stayed with what we originally set out to do. Funny enough, we made fewer mistakes in this free program than what we have before in this season so we did accomplish our goal of our own season’s-best performance.” What now? What does recovery and beyond look like for this dynamic team? “Eric and I have already discussed the World Team trophy so when we get back he will continue with physio and massage appointments and as long as he can get the all clear by this Thursday and can do the Lutz jump, we’re going. The hips have always been an area of vulnerability for Eric and it takes a lot of work at weekly physio appointments to maintain the strength and stability.” “We have already had so many meetings about our plans moving forward,” she said. “It’s almost as if we needed this kind of rock bottom to be able to help us imagine what would come next and the changes that we are going to make.” Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford came to Helsinki with visions of a third consecutive world pairs title. But a peculiar hip injury to Radford derailed their dreams, and left the two both proud that they persevered but way down in seventh place after the short program. “We are surprised by marks. Out of our control. We have nothing to lose now.” @mhjd_85@Rad85E 72.67 7th after SP @CBCOlympics#helsinki2017pic.twitter.com/yenJcSQwoL Skating to Seal’s “Killer,” the two-time defending champs, who were practically unbeatable the previous two seasons, scored 72.67 points for their shaky program. How difficult was it? “I can’t even tell you,” Radford said. “Last night was one of the most difficult nights of my entire life. I feel so proud. It still doesn’t feel 100 per cent. I still was going in with ‘what-ifs.’ But I think the way we skated was excellent for the condition. And I think we’re both a little surprised with how low the score was. We anticipated it was going to be higher after our performance. Honestly, the last 24 hrs were some of the hardest of my life. Thank you for all of your support. Especially @mhjd_85. #helsinki2017#kitos — “But it just builds confidence for (Thursday’s long program). I’ve just got another four-and-a-half minutes of skating to get through and I really just hope that my hip can hold up.” Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China were first with 81.23 points, followed by Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany (79.84) and Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia (79.37). Lubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch were the top Canadians in sixth place with 73.14 points. Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford reflect on their last-minute changes1:23 Radford, a 31-year-old from Balmertown, Ont., had revealed a day earlier that he was battling a hip injury that began with a muscle spasm a week earlier. He spent much of Tuesday night receiving treatment — “I’m surprised that my hip is still intact. It’s been massaged to death,” he said. Wednesday night, Radford looked at times like he was gritting his teeth to get through, particularly in their side-by-side sit spins. He clearly didn’t have the flexibility or strength for a full crouch. “That was actually the biggest risk,” he said. “I didn’t know, that was one of those ‘what ifs,’ am I just going to have to save it?” A day earlier, he had fallen repeatedly on his triple Lutz in practice, so they opted to swap the jump out for side-by-side triple toe loops, which put less pressure on the bad hip. “It was either change the jump or pull out,” said coach Bruno Marcotte. “We haven’t tried a side-by-side triple toe until today since the first week of December,” Duhamel said. “I don’t know anybody else in the world who can not train a jump for three months, and go out, skating last, at the world championships and do one.” It wasn’t the first time Radford has competed injured. At the 2011 world championships, Duhamel badly broke Radford’s nose with a sharp elbow in the short program. They went on to finish seventh. Marcotte, who is also Duhamel’s husband, believes the pair will rebound with a vengeance in next year’s Olympic season. Canada’s Liubov Ilyushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch discuss their success on the big stage1:19 “They’re hungry, but I think they’re really going to be hungry coming home,” Marcotte said. “They’ve always come up to their best performance when they have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. It hasn’t been really the case in the last couple of years. “They’re really strong individuals, and I think sometimes when something hard happens, usually people get back stronger together, and work more as a team. I think that’s what’s going to happen.” Radford said they’re not considering withdrawing. These world championships are important as they determine how many spots a country can enter in each event at the Olympics. Plus, he said it’s not the type of injury that will get worse. “I hope that even if I wake up tomorrow and it’s 15 per cent better, that’ll make it that much easier to get through the long program,” he said. Tarasova was also competing injured after an accident in the morning practice. Massot had sliced her leg with his blade when the two fell, a gash that required about a dozen stitches and had them questioning whether they could compete. Ilyushechkina and Moscovitch, meanwhile, were all smiles after their skate to “Tango Jalousie.” Julianne Seguin, Charlie Bilodeau on pairs short routine: ‘We’re putting it behind us’0:54 “We are definitely happy,” said Ilyushechkina. “We did everything. . . we stayed in sync, and we did everything one by one to the end of the program with some emotions exploding in the middle from me.” “Lubov got a little excited,” Moscovitch said, laughing. “It’s good … it brings me more out of my head from thinking too much. It was fun, it was well-done.” The Toronto skaters were buoyed by the strong results of teammates Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman, who finished second and third in the women’s short program earlier in the day. “I believe in momentum. They were absolutely incredible, it felt good coming to the rink and seeing our teammates skate that way,” Moscovitch said. “I’m very proud of our ladies,” Ilyushechkina added. “What I felt when I watched them. . . from the depths of the heart, I was very happy. I think I kept a piece of that warmth in myself and brought it tonight. Definitely good energy.”
