Police seized 500,000 boxes of counterfeit Durex condoms, complete with matching fake branded boxes, from workshops in three Chinese provinces. Seventeen people were arrested in Hebei, Henan, and Zhejiang after cops were tipped off that a local businessman was selling condoms for suspiciously low prices.
“The hygienic conditions in those villages were very bad. We saw the condoms they were making – they blended the condoms with silicone oil in a bucket. It was totally below official manufacturing standards,” said Cangnan police chief Zheng Xidan. The phony rubbers were made in Henan and Hubei provinces, then packaged in Zhejiang, according to authorities.
While the fakes were found to contain fungi, thin patches, and holes, retailers apparently couldn’t resist a bargain – the gang sold them wholesale for 14 cents per pack, a bargain compared to $ 22 for the real thing.
Condom counterfeiting is a big business in China, apparently – more than 10 similar cases have passed through Henan courts since 2014. The defendants who have been found guilty have received sentences of up to four years. In February, police seized two million phony Durex and Okamoto brand condoms in Yuncheng in neighboring Shanxi province.
In 2015, Shanghai police seized three million condoms believed to be worth $ 1.67 million and found they contained toxic metals. The condoms, which were being sold under popular brand names including Durex, were manufactured for just 1 cent apiece by a criminal network operating across eight provinces. Unlike the ring busted Tuesday, however, these fakers sold their product at full price on their online shop, reaching out to customers on social media.
Chinese knockoff condoms are unfortunately not just a problem for the Chinese. US customs authorities seized 40,000 Chinese-manufactured counterfeit condoms in San Juan, Puerto Rico last March. Chinese-made fakes have also turned up in Ghana.

Roger Federer last night followed up returning to the top of the global tennis rankings by winning the Sportsman and Comeback of the Year gongs at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.
But he would have been outraged at this outburst from Daria Gavrilova.
Gavrilova lost her temper against American Madison Brengle at the Acapulco Open, throwing her racket after misfiring on a serve and nearly hitting a ball boy.
The racket then bounced up and slammed into the umpire’s chair, yet Gavrilova escaped punishment and went on to win the match 4-6 6-3 6-3.
The Australian was seen laughing and joking with the umpire after the match.
But her behaviour hasn’t escaped the attention of notorious bad boy Nick Kyrgios.
Kyrgios, known for tantrums and controversial moments of his own, tweeted a video of the incident and wrote: “I would be banned for 6 years and been on every paper and news channel for the next month.”
American Coco Vandeweghe, who has also found herself in trouble with tennis authorities, appeared to support Kyrgios with a reply to his tweet that included an emoji of a woman shrugging.
“Double standards everywhere,” she commented.
Speaking after the match, Gavriolva said: “It was so hot, especially in the first set, but I looked at the weather forecast and so I knew it that after an hour or so the weather would drop down.
“So I was just trying to hang in there for the first set and trying to be really tough battling it out. And when the weather went down I felt much better.
“My serve wasn’t really working today in the first set, but I was hurting her with my forehand. I was trying to get it high, and thankfully the court is bouncy here so it helps.”

The infamous “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli is in jail, but the egregious drug-price-gouging scheme that shocked America and made him a household name last year is still doing just fine.
Now, you’ll recall Shkreli is not in jail for price gouging, but defrauding investors.
But we know who he is because in 2015 he bought a decades-old AIDS-related treatment and then unapologetically raised the price more than 5,000%. At the time, his wasn’t the only drug company doing that kind of thing, and that remains true today.
What has changed, though, is that the people who pay for these drugs — the insurers and health plans and even small cities — are finally starting to do something about it.
And they’re starting to explain in detail just how this works and how many people are involved in a drug-price hike.
We got the best look at this pushback on Wednesday when Bank of America Merrill Lynch got its clients together for a venerable Wall Street tradition: a call outlining the risks in the year ahead.
This one was about the pharmaceutical industry. And it was a complete and total takedown.
BAML’s industry expert broke down the secret of how drug-price gouging is perpetuated in the pharmaceutical industry more candidly than we’ve ever heard before.
Spoiler alert: The drug companies aren’t doing this alone.
To understand this call, a recording of which was obtained by Business Insider, you first have to familiarize yourself with a couple of things:
Though the drug’s primary use — its “indication,” in pharma speak — is for children, Medicare, a program for older people, spent $ 500 million on it in 2015. It was one of the program’s 20 most expensive drugs. Only 1% of doctors prescribe it.
PBMs manage lists called formularies that say what drugs an insurer will pay for. Drugmakers offer rebates to lower their prices and get their products on that list (and to you). The PBMs keep some of that rebate, but no one knows how much, because it’s a secret.
Three PBMs — Express Scripts (the largest), CVS Caremark, and UnitedHealth — control about 80% of the US market.
The expert on Wednesday’s call was a man named Chris Guinther, the systems director of PBMs and specialty pharmacies for the Mercy Health System, the largest such system and the fourth-largest employer in Ohio.
He says that because of news reports, payers are starting to look at the expensive drugs that use charitable programs and requesting they be knocked off their formularies.
Guinther excluded Acthar from his formulary about a year ago. He said he went from paying millions of dollars a year to zero with no patient disruption.

More payers are starting to do this to cut costs, but Guinther warned that they may get some pushback from PBMs.
That’s where a bunch of opaque relationships that keep this system alive come into play.
Mercy has what’s called a closed formulary, designed in-house. Most companies, unfamiliar with the complicated world of pharma, use the national formulary, designed by a PBM.
And some PBMs have really close relationships with the drugs on those formularies — remember, they get a cut of the rebates.
For some drugs, though, it goes even deeper. Express Scripts sells Acthar almost exclusively through its specialty pharmacy, Accredo Health. And Acthar’s charitable program was managed by United BioSource, a company Express Scripts sold earlier this month.
“I think that there needs to be more self-regulation and transparency in terms of how all these relationships work,” Guinther said.
“Express Scripts folks have said Acthar is not a good drug, and yet they operate the hub, they are funneling prescriptions through themselves through Accredo, and there are nondisclosed performance rebates between Mallinckrodt and Express Scripts,” he added. “So I would argue there’s a lot of money changing hands.”
And most of that money is coming from you.
American Health Policy
The way Guinther tells it, everyone is getting a cut — the drug companies pay the charitable foundations, as well as some healthcare providers (like doctors) to consult and do speaking engagements.
“The last I heard from Mallinckrodt, they were proudly announcing how they gave away half a billion in Acthar,” he said. “And I kind of have to laugh because they gave away half a billion because they raised the price that much.”
This is how the whole thing is perpetuated. It takes a village.
“For people with Express Scripts, Optum, and CVS, I think there needs to be a greater call for exposing these relationships, and I also think there needs to be a clearer understanding of what happens if you don’t have a custom formulary,” Guinther said.
He added: “If you have this national formulary where Acthar is on there, how is your PBM going to help you make your decision?”
Last month, Mallinckrodt told investors something was keeping prescriptions from being filled, but it didn’t elaborate much on what that something was. Its stock fell as much as 35% on the news.
Then, at a luncheon with investors in New York a few days later, the company acknowledged that at least one big payer had started putting severe formulary restrictions on the controversial drug, according to a person who was there.
Mallinckrodt declined to comment for this story.
So far, Washington has been noticeably absent from this story, despite all the talk of punishing pharma for its most egregious abuses.
In fact, if you ignored the rhetoric, you’d probably think DC is happy with the industry. The Trump administration has done absolutely nothing on drug pricing, and the industry is elated about the tax break it’s about to get.
But people are at least talking about these relationships.
Earlier this month, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on the drug supply chain and its effect on pricing. It didn’t go well for the industry, and the whole thing devolved into the drug companies blaming the PBMs, the PBMs blaming the drug companies, the pharmacies decrying getting crushed by the drug companies and the PBMs, and so on.
Frankly, the whole exercise seemed to frustrate legislators.
“I can’t for the life of me figure out what you do,” Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith of Virginia told the lobbyist representing the large PBMs. “We’ve got this black box called a PBM … and they” — the drug companies — “are saying they’ve got to raise their prices to pay you.”
Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado started asking about the administrative fees PBMs collect from the drug companies. Her colleague, Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, wanted to know how much money was going to charitable assistance programs — a question drug companies definitely don’t like to answer (we’ve tried to ask).
None of this is enough on the policy side, and what’s happening on the payer side is just a start. But at least someone out there is talking about how deep the scam runs, even if it is on secret Wall Street investor calls.

Johnson had beaten Yuichi Sugita over five sets in his opening match, a gripping encounter that started on Sunday and had to be finished on Monday.
The No25 seed admitted after that encounter that he had found it difficult to keep his feelings in check.
“Just a lot of the emotions. You know, my dad he was such a big part of my tennis life, just an emotional time. Yeah, it’s not about tennis right now,” Johnson said.
“The pain and trying to get through it, it’s just hard.
“Probably one of the harder matches I’ve played.”
And Johnson was again tested physically and mentally in his second round match from which he eventually emerged a 6-2, 7-6(8), 3-6, 7-6(6) victor.
The American had been given a harsh point penalty ball abuse late on in the fourth set, a decision that saw the match delayed as he argued the toss with the chair umpire who saw his hitting the ball away as an outburst of anger.
“I know I broke a racket and it’s the same rule,” Johnson said.
“But that’s not even an attempt at anger.
“It’s not an attempt at anything.”
The incident came at a crucial moment in the set but Johnson was not to be denied, closing out the fourth set tie-break to win a dramatic match.
Coric promptly shattered his racket on the court in frustration before storming off the court with his equipment, smashing a water bottle on the ground.
Johnson meanwhile was completely overcome by emotion and was seen sobbing at the net with his head in his hands.
“I just miss my Dad,” Johnson choked through tears in a post-match interview.
“I wish he was following along.
“I know he is from upstairs but it’s just so emotional.
“It’s hard to describe.
“I knew he was looking down on me in that last point and it gave me the strength to finish it off.
“Physically I’m okay. Emotionally I’m a mess.
“I know this is what he always told me to do: be a fighter and be a competitor.
“It’s the only thing I can do.”
He will now face No6 seed Dominic Thiem in a testing third-round match.
There is a lot of discussion surrounding VR as a spectator sport. Some folks are even trying to brand the term ‘vsports” as an update to “esports” for professional VR competition that can attract spectators.
But there are serious roadblocks to this evolution. Games like Call of Duty, Dota 2, or Starcraft 2 have millions upon millions of players and fans that are familiar with their respective games, providing a large base of spectators who can closely follow the action of professional players battling it out. Even then, some competitions enjoy only a few years of interest when the game is popular, and then fall off when players move on or a sequel arrives.
VR doesn’t have that player base yet. It does have something else, though — mixed reality. A big green screen and a beefy PC can be used in conjunction to instantly catch the eye of spectators. Given the way VR uses our natural body movements to interact rather than button presses or mouse movements, anyone watching can get a quick grasp on what is happening — jumping out of the way, ducking your head, or connecting perfectly with a virtual ball all make perfect sense to someone watching a mixed reality stream.
The mixed reality setup for Racket: NX is one of the best I’ve seen. First it was presented on a gigantic TV at VRLA and then I spotted it again at Unity’s Vision Summit this week, this time capturing the full match between two players in mixed reality.
I’ve just played the game these few times, so I am far from a professional. But between the first time I played it and the video above I noted a dramatic change in my ability to direct the ball and aim it where I wanted with precise timing and racket orientation. The sport itself would undoubtedly be even more exciting to watch with experts competing.
“Anyone who plays the game at home will find a very evident learning curve similar to learning a new sport,” said Dave Levy, CCO at Racket: NX developer One Hamsa. “If I don’t play for a couple days I feel my skill drop.”
Even with my limited skill playing, I found myself transfixed by the colorful mixed reality on the screens at both these events — something that makes me hopeful for the prospect of VR as spectator sport.
Racket: NX remains in early access on Steam selling for $ 20, with a demo version available for free. The plan is for the game to leave early access late this year as more pieces are added to it, like a competitive league and better matchmaking.
