The Choisir four-year-old lines up in a BM66 Handicap (1100m) and heading into this race only the smart Sei Stella has beaten him at his three runs this time in.

That was in a Highway Handicap in December and he’s a great fresh horse so six weeks in between runs isn’t going to hurt his chances.

“He has a crack every time. He’s my best chance,” Morgan said.

“He’ll go there and put himself in the first two or three and he looks really well. He looks great in the skin and he worked well on Saturday morning and should be hard to beat.

“He going into it with 57.5kg instead of 59kg will help and Wendy has ridden half a dozen winners for me this season so she’s riding well.”

MATT JONES’ BEST BETS

SCONE

BEST BET: ANCHOIS (Race 8, No. 2)

This horse comes off a good form race when second and the freshen up only plays to his advantage and it’s hard to see oneget the better of him if he’s at his best.

NEXT BEST: SINGLE SAPPHIRE (Race 6 No.11)

This horse has only had two runs but they’ve both been in town and she wasn’t disgraced on either occasion. She’s drawn perfectlytoo.

BEST EXOTIC: QUADDIE

Race 5: 1, 2, 4

Race 6: 3, 8, 11

Race 7: 1, 2, 5, 6

Race 8: Leg 4: 2

TRAINER TO WATCH

Peter and Paul Snowden send two horses — Vici (Race 1) and Single Sapphire (Race 6) — to the bush which doesn’t happen too often and you get the feeling they’re hear for confidence boosting runs.

PARKES

BEST BET: CASZAR (Race 7 No.2)

This horse is really knocking on the door and after some encouraging runs should be ready to get the job done.

JOCKEY TO WATCH

Qin Yong has five rides with Any Blinkin’ Day and Dynamite Dan looking like his best hopes.

********

Despite his good form this preparation, Morgan doesn’t think it will be a walk in the park with Wendy Peel on board from barrier four.

It’s an open race with at least three other good hopes.

“There’s probably a couple of sneaky chances in the race. I’ve always followed Rodney Northam’s horse (Love For Willow) on its home track and it will be getting home hard,” Morgan said.

“The dangers, Press Review and Love For Willow, are more 1400m horses and Kedah will be tough to beat too.”

Making Shadows is Morgan’s other hope and he’ll be trying to win a Benchmark 5 Handicap (1600m).

He’s got it in his to win on talent alone but needs to be more determined according to his trainer who said he had excuses last start when seventh at Tamworth.

He’s third-up now and is very fit.

“He was really good first-up. He paraded a bit over the top then and I made a mistake by taking the blinkers off second-up. I shouldn’t have,” Morgan said.

“I’ve put the visors back on him and taken the ear muffs off. He was caught three deep last time.”

The five-year-old has placed six times from 18 starts but it’s the number in the win column that is the worry for his supporters.

“The only concern is that he’s won one from 17 and that was on a heavy track so that’s hard to look past,” Morgan said.

“It’s D-Day for him here with a good drawn in an even race so I think he’ll be right in the finish even though he’s not that genuine. He wants the mile.”

Morgan just wants him to get smothered in the run and be allowed to finish off his race down the straight.

“I think he’ll be midfield then we’ll get him to the outside. He looks hard to beat even though he’s only won once from 17 starts,” he said.

Western Parade and Western Saga, along with St Luke look to be the main dangers in the big field and Morgan said his runner is a nice each-way chance if he gets even luck.

ANY BLINKIN’ DAY TO HAVE GOOD LOOK AT WIN

Clint Lundholm has plenty of faith in his veteran Any Blinkin’ Day as he sets him for another feature country race at Parkes.

The seven-year-old races in the Open Handicap (1400m) and he’s no stranger to this type of race as he enters his 43rd start.

He comes off a fifth placing behind the in-form Mackellar’s Love and he won at his only start at Parkes and over 1400m.

“I think the old horse is back in good form and has been very consistent of late. I think he’s a great chance in the race,” Lundholm said.

“It looks good paper. I can only go on what the horse is doing at home and he looks a million bucks and is doing well so I’m sure he can figure somewhere in the finish.

“He’s a hardened handicapper now and he can win it.”

Mum’s The Word is looking to make it back-to-back wins in a BM58 Handicap (1000m) after triumphing at Gilgandra over 1200m a month ago and the drop back in trip shouldn’t hurt her hopes.

“I think she’s struck a nice race here,” Lundholm said.

“She’s been going great. I know she’s only won the one start but she’s only been beaten by less than three lengths all preparation.”

Ben Shoof is racing for the Dubbo trainer in a Class 2 Handicap (1400m) and he feels the Hemlet four-year-old’s consistency will take him a long way in the event.

Zouzoom is still trying for a breakthrough win in a Maiden Plate (1600m) and he ran third last start over 1550m.

It was his best race performance after a strong of runs at 1000m and 1300m

“We finally got a placing out of him and he’s got to the distance he needs. He’s shown that he wants a mile,” Lundholm said.

“He’s got no pace early but he’ll keep battling away home and he can run well again.”

RACE 5

Bon Allen has been given his easiest assignment in a while today but he’ll still need to be at his best to win. In Good Healthis first-up and wasn’t bad in running third to end her last preparation and she’s got enough talent to figure in the finish.Go Joyce Go returns after suffering a bleeding attack last winter. He’s another who has the talent to go close to winning.Dreamy Dragon will come from off the speed and hit the line hard.

BET: Bon Allen to win

RACE 6

Luna Mia is a Redoute’s Choice filly who comes off a barrier trial win ahead of her debut here. Drawing wide is often a negative, especially with a first starter, but she may just have the talent to win. Expellable gets the blinkers on for the first timenow and he’s getting better each time he steps out on a track. Single Sapphire was less than three lengths off them in townlast start so she should be a big threat now in the bush. Akecheta will learn a lot off his debut run.

BET: Single Sapphire to win

RACE 7

Western Parade has been freshened and goes from a 2100m run back to a mile and that’s often a proven formula and he’s goingto look to come over the top of them late. Western Saga doesn’t fire a shot on wet tracks and the firmer surface at Sconeis what he needs to win again and he’s won twice at the distance. St Luke shouldn’t be discounted at a track and trip thathe enjoys. He missed the kick last start.

BET: St Luke to win

RACE 8

Anchois ran a good race when second in a Highway race more than a month ago and he will fire off a freshen up from a goodgate at a reasonable weight. Kedah looks like his main rival and she’s won two from four and forgive her ninth placing laststart. Press Review came of age later last preparation and gets a light weight and good gate so there’s no reason she can’trun a big race.

BET: Achois to win

PARKES

RACE 4

The Rouseabout is third-up now and should peak and he hasn’t been far off his victors for many starts in the past year. Hemight be over the odds. Bid To Fame is going up two classes here off a breakthrough win but it’s not the hardest Class 2 raceand he’ll be coming from off the speed. Recital has raced against better horses than he faces here and is a hope at a triphe likes. Zaze is similar and should be beat home with Greg Ryan on.

BET: The Rouseabout to win

RACE 5

A Martin Placepick is flying at the moment but in all her wins and placings of late she has drawn perfectly but that’s notthe case today. Kingsbridge will improve a lot second-up but the wide gate is a query. Sea Lady has been a nice mare for sometime now and she’ll be in this for a long way and she’s been unlucky not to win the past two. Trainer Rodney Robb told stewardsthat Thermosa will be looking to lead this race and he’s trying to get him into a Country Championships heat such is the opinionof him so he can bounce back. Attalea is a good hope too. This is a hot little race.

BET: Quinella 5, 6

RACE 6

Dynamite Dan has been racing in career best form for a while now and there’s no reason why he can’t win despite his poor strikerate. He’ll be there in the finish somewhere. Mum’s The Word is going well enough to suggest she’s a chance and she’s a versatilemare who can be anywhere in the run. Hu Hit Hu is building towards a win. She’s not a fresh horse and gets better with racingbut she is dropping back in trip and will have to defy history because she’s yet to win or place in 10 attempts at 1000m.

BET: Dynamite Dan to win

RACE 7

This is the day for Caszar to record his first win after three-straight second placings and he should in the perfect spotfrom an inside gate. Valarian has also recorded a number of placings of late and will probably look to cross the field froma wide gate and should run it out strongly if he gets a bit of luck early in the race. Hiemal will be on the speed and he’sjust dropping back a tough in trip and will be strong late.

BET: Caszar to win

Herald Sun chief racing writer LEO SCHLINK has cast his eye over the formguide, and believes an unlucky runner last start can break through, while highlighting some other key runners on the eight-race card.

TOO HARD: LEADING VIC TRAINERS’ TRACK CONCERN

RV INVESTIGATION: POSITIVE COBALT SWAB

See Leo Schlink’s BEST BETS below:

ON THE PUNT — FLEMINGTON

BEST BET: LAURE ME IN (Race 8, No 3)

Blocked for runs late at Caulfield when fourth behind Silentz after being heavily backed. Wide draw of no concern given his racing pattern. Will be storming late.

NEXT BEST: LONG LEAF (Race 2, No 2)

Yet to win either over this distance or at Flemington, but has an imposing formline around Ringerdingding, Native Soldier and Seabrook. Michael Poy’s claim offsets big weight.

FIVE KINGDOMS (Race 3, No 1)

Brave here last start behind talented Declares War when little went right. Can bounce back to the winning list with luck.

PRINCE ZIGGY (Race 5, No 5)

Building a decent record with three wins and three placings from past six starts. Chelsea McFarlane’s 3kg claim leaves him just above the minimum.

THE TRAINER — SIMON ZAHRA

SEAS NO LIMIT (Race 3, No 4)

“The first-up run was huge. Will be suited here by the extra distance and we’re confident he’ll run really well.”

INTO RIO (Race 5, No 11)

“Put a line through the last run, been set for this race.”

SMART COUPE (Race 6, No 11)

“Thrown in at the deep end here but she deserves a crack at a Group race after her last run.”

THE JOCKEY — TAHLIA HOPE

Hope continues to travel far and wide and, after appearances at Randwick, Seymour and Echuca, the 3kg-claimer returns to Flemington to partner NORTH AFRIKA (Race 2, No 8), CORONEL (Race 3, No 13), EVIL LIL (Race 4, No 9), PROUD WOLF (Race 6, No 10) and HOSTAR (Race 8, No 12).

First of all is the form that surrounds Gunnaza before he races in a Benchmark 64 Handicap (1000m).

Two starts back he ran half a length behind Falerina for third at Newcastle and she went on to win at Rosehill on a Saturday for trainer Brett Cavanough.

MATT JONES’S BEST BETS AT GOSFORD

BEST BET: Gogoldcoast (Race 7, No.3)

I rarely put first starters as my best bet but this horse looked great in a lead-up trial when getting the better of Kaperjack, who went on to win impressively at Rosehill last Saturday against older horses, so it’s a great form line.

NEXT BEST: Stock Up (Race 4, No.4)

This mare is starting to repay punters after losing a few times last preparation and she ran a super race, when slightly unsuited, against a good field in much better grade last start.

BEST ROUGHIE: Gunnaza (Race 2, No.4)

The form around him is great. He’s perfectly placed for this race and should put himself right into it from the gate.

QUADDIE

Leg 1: 1, 3, 11, 14

Leg 2: 1, 4, 8, 10

Leg 3: 1, 3

Leg 4: 2, 3, 5, 7

TRAINER TO WATCH

Scott Singleton’s horses are in form. While Stock Up is his top hope, don’t be surprised to see Mosht Up do well.

JOCKEY TO WATCH

Christian Reith has a number of top hopes today. Laguna Mountains and All Too Free look like they might sneak under the radar.

*********************

Last start O’Neill watched as Gunnaza went one better to run second behind Ozark at Muswellbrook, and Ozark’s trainer Cody Morgan thinks the former Godolphin runner will win in town soon.

So O’Neill knows he has a horse running well ahead of his first race at Gosford.

“He performed well at Muswellbrook last start and came up against a good one (Ozark) that day,” O’Neill said.

“When you get to the Benchmark up here we have to go down there. He’s an eight-year-old but he’s only lightly raced.”

O’Neill has another reason to be happy Gunnaza is racing on Thursday.

Gunnaza’s career was in limbo when he chipped a sesamoid early last year and didn’t race for 18 months.

O’Neill seriously contemplated retiring him but couldn’t let go of one of his favourite horses and did everything possible to get him back to the races.

“He jumped over the crossing at Coffs Harbour and landed awkwardly and we knew straight away something was wrong and he was operated on straight way,” O’Neill said.

“We were told to give him 12 months in the paddock or we would jeopardise him again.

“It’s hard to do that when they are six years old but we brought him back slowly.

“We decided to keep going with him. The Za-Ims are almost finished and they seem to train on pretty well.

“And you get attached to them and don’t want to see them go away.

“He has come back good and we will be trying to win again. He’s a pretty sound horse now and things have been going well.”

On Thursday Gunnaza races over his pet distance at which he has won five times and placed on four occasions in just 10 starts.

He hasn’t run since November 6 because he loves his runs spaced.

“That seems to be his go because he tells you when he’s ready,” O’Neill said.

“He’s not the best eater but we gave him a gallop on the back on Saturday morning then he licked the bin out.

“He just puts everything in to his races so it takes him a little longer to get back to the races.

“The trackwork riders have been coming back telling me he’s full of himself, so we know he’s pretty right.

“He can get 1100m but he loves 900m and 1000m. I’d prefer to see him one out and one back. We wouldn’t want to be far from the lead in a 1000m race.”

Andrew Gibbons will ride him out of barrier two, which is perfect for him.

“He will be up the front there somewhere,” O’Neill said. “He knows he’s tough and we’ve just got to pick the right races for him.

“If he does all right in Gosford we might be able to sneak into the midweeks in Sydney with him.”

TIME IS RIGHT FOR WARRIOR TO REACH POTENTIAL

Trainer Richard Butler believes this is the preparation when lightly raced Fruitful Warrior can come of age.

The Nowra runner lines up in a Class 2 Handicap (1200m) at Gosford after we last saw him winning at his home track on July 8.

Butler thinks he has put enough work into Fruitful Warrior and he’s ready to improve on a first-up record of two starts for no wins or placings.

SCROLL DOWN FOR MATT JONES’S INSIDE MAIL

That’s because the five-year-old is a different horse now.

“We’re probably throwing him into the deep end in regards to going into the race without a trial but he’s had a jumpout at Nowra and did everything right which, to me, suggests that he wouldn’t look out of place in this type of race,” Butler said.

“I think you’ve got to ignore those (first-up) statistics because he has taken a lot of time to get right, mentally.

“I feel he’s a more mature and stronger horse this preparation, so we’re hoping he can run an honest race.”

The negative is that Fruitful Warrior has drawn wide but Butler said Jay Ford had the luxury of being on a horse that was adaptable.

“I’ll leave tactics up to Jay,” Butler said. “If he begins well there’s no reason why he can’t run on the speed.

“There are some pretty quick horses in this race, though, so if he was to take a sit I’m sure he will be running home strongly in the end.

“He’s the type of horse that gets rolling early and continues his run right through to the line. He did that at Nowra and won convincingly.”

Fruitful Warrior might not have won first-up in the past but has shown dominance in winning off freshen-ups at two of his past three runs.

“I’d like to think he can run well given that he’s had a smooth preparation,” Butler said.

“Every other preparation it hasn’t been like that because he was so immature.

“He’s an older horse now so hopefully he can come back well from a break and have a nice preparation.”

INSIDE MAIL WITH MATT JONES

RACE 1

Nivalis has been unlucky not to win her past two races over 900m and now she’s ready to take the step up to 1100m and she should be just about leading the field. That Song drops in grade after pulling up 2/5 lame on the Kensington track last start so ignore that eighth placing. Impurity is getting close to a win and is fit enough to produce her best and she’ll be strong to the line. Magnifica is the each-way hope.

Bet: Impurity to win

RACE 2

Gunnaza has sensational form around him and he’s perfectly placed to win this open affair after three weeks between runs which is what he loves. Transmitter won easily in maiden grade last start but this is a step up. She looks capable of going to another level. Dreamy Belle returns from a long break after running in Listed grade in May and she won her lead-up trial and looked great in it. The removal of blinkers has done wonders for Fine Hero and he’s third-up and looking for three-straight wins.

Bet: Gunnaza to win

RACE 3

Wokurna has led his only two starts which is an advantage at Gosford and this is his first go at a mile after very nice performances over 1300m at his past two and the form of Stock Uphas been franked. He’s Imposing stays at a mile after winning at the trip last start and this is a good option for him third-up. Beauty Kanas just got beat late over 1600m last start and will take plenty out of it after coming off a freshen up and is bred to run it out strongly. Laguna Mountains will also be strong to the line and can run them down.

Bet: Quinella 3, 7

RACE 4

Stock Up is starting to live up to her potential and she’ll be awfully hard to beat here after a good last start run in town when less than a length of emerging star Napoleon Solo. Weekend Affair beat Francesco in higher grade at Canterbury last start he’s going to give Stock Up a run for her money off that effort and the 1600m looks ideal. The Cartoonist also drops in grade so this is much more winnable.

Bet: Stock Up to win

RACE 5

Swelt put in a good first-up run and the horse that beat it went on to run in town on Wednesday. He should sit in a good spot and let down well in the straight. Montana Thunder has impressed at his two runs after being off the scene for two years and has extra fitness for this now. Montails ran in honest race on debut and will take a lot out of it for a powerful stable/jockey combination. Hopscotch didn’t do much on debut but ran behind He’s Super Lucky who has gone on to win in town since and she gets a light weight.

Bet: Swelt to win

RACE 6

Man And Superman should be leading this field into the straight and if he can have a good time of it out in front he can give a kick and make it hard for his rivals to chase him down. Triplicate got beaten by Wokurna, who races earlier on Thursday, two starts back which is a good guide and he’ll keep coming at them. Bulwark found form when put up over 1900m for the first time so he should be suited to 2100m. Time To Rethink should drop back from a wide gate and run home hard and Tim Clark gets on now.

Bet: Time To Rethink to win

RACE 7

Gogoldcoast looked great in his lead-up trial when winning after holding out Kapajack who went on to win at Rosehill on debut so this looks like a good first-up test for him. Battle Cry is resuming with some headgear added which should make a big difference and he’s had three trials to get him ready as he races as a gelding for the first time. Efficiently has drawn perfect and will be in the box seat while Mosht Up shouldn’t be ignored after a lovely last start effort.

Bet: Gogoldcoast to win

RACE 8

If Wander produced his best for his new stable he’ll go close in this grade and he wears blinkers for the first time and has a good first-up record and loves the trip. All Too Free secured a win last start which was probably overdue and if the mare hold that form she’s going to be right in the finish. Anna’s Joy hasn’t been far off a couple of nice horses at her past two while Screen Shot should be on speed and this is a lot easier than some of his past races.

Bet: Wander to win

PAKENHAM (THURSDAY NIGHT)

BEST BET

OLIVE (R1 No.11, $ 2.50)

Go on her debut run when she finished second to Flemington carnival winner Blue Roche at sale and she’s the one to beat. On that occasion she ran home strongly. At her next start she failed at Flemington when heavily backed but she was found to be coughing post-race.

NEXT BEST

DEPLOYS ALONE (R3 No.2, $ 6)

Went too hard when he led at Sandown Lakeside last start when he battled on for fourth behind Declares War. Cindy Alderson has chosen to take the blinkers off.

SOARING EAGLE (R5, No.8 $ 4)

Unlucky last start this track/distance and class as she was held up for a run early in the straight before finishing on strongly to go down in a close photo to No Reward.

GOT THE MOVES (R8, No.3 $ 6)

Returned to form with strong on speed win at Bendigo second-up. He’s had seven starts now for three wins and two placings (both at this track).

KYNETON

BEST BET

CASTLE ROCK (R1 No.1, $ 1.85)

Building to a win. Gave away a big start but ran on solidly for well beaten third at Morphettville last start over 1600m. Step up in distance to 1875m should suit.

NEXT BEST

ZOOPHORIA (R7 No.4, $ 2.40)

Looked home last start at Moe but was worried out of it on the line by Don’t Dismiss. That was over 1614m and she goes back to 1469m which should suit. She remains in a Benchmark 58.

Mosuo, a flashy daughter of Blue Diamond winner Star Witness, made an inauspicious beginning to her career by finishing nine lengths behind the winner at odds of $ 81 when she made her debut at the Sunshine Coast in April.

BRUT FORCE: WEIR WINS FIRST VICTORIA DERBY

Fast forward almost four months and this time the filly was $ 7 to $ 5 for Newnham winning at Nowra despite some significant obstacles placed in her way during the run.

“She was in an awkward spot and still had a lot of work to do in the last 100m yet managed to do it and do it well,’’ Newnham said.

TRAINER TO WATCH

KRIS LEES brings a good team to Muswellbrook with Crowd Surfer, I Am Awesome and Kadah looking like top picks in their respective races.

JOCKEY TO WATCH

GREG RYAN has a winning chance in each race he contests today. Voyages could cause an upset in the third.

******

“She has had a little setback after Nowra and we just had to give her a bit of time to come right. She trialled up the other day and it looks a suitable race for her.

“I wanted to give her another easy assignment before we step up too much but it looks a winnable race. I’d imagine there would be enough pace for her (Sunday) to sit back off them and launch in the straight.’’

A recent impressive trial placing from lightly-raced gelding Valarian stands him in good stead in the Radio Goulburn Maiden (1200m). The son of Ad Valorem had two starts, both in May, at his opening campaign finishing on the heels of the placegetters each time.

“He has strengthened up a bit since his first prep,’’ Newnham said. “His work’s been good, his trials have been good, he gets blinkers on (today) so I’d expect him to run in the first three.’’

The trainer’s representative in the feature Waratah Thoroughbreds Anniversary Cup (1300m) is Cyrus Rocks, who is resuming.

“He had a long time off after being with Gai (Waterhouse), he had a bowed tendon,’’ Newnham said.

“He’s done a good job to win a couple of races. Whether he’d be sharp enough for 1300m is probably debatable but it’s a nice race to start him off in.’’ Cyrus Rocks raced well over the summer months in late 2017, early 2018 — his last win was at Canterbury over 1900m with Josh Parr and 59kg on his back.

“He is sort of stuck there somewhere between a Wednesday and a Saturday class horse at the moment so we’ll just see how he goes (Sunday),’’ Newnham said. “There is always the Goulburn Cup and a couple of nice night meetings at Canterbury where he has been effective.’’

MUSWELLBROOK

PIPPI’S Pride has won his past two races thanks to new tactics and trainer Stephen Gleeson is giving jockey Cejay Graham all the credit.

The eight-year-old will be trying to win her third cup race in a row today when he contests the Sandy Hollow Cup (1450m) after victories in the Denman and Kayuga Cups when Graham led all the way on him.

“You never would’ve dreamt of riding him like that. When you used to go to the front on him he’d never find the line so it’s funny how things work out,” Gleeson said.

“I just think he’s enjoying Cejay riding him where he can be the boss. She’s not fighting him and he’s enjoying racing his own way. They’re both clicking together and it’s just worked.

“There’s no point in changing. She’s done it twice now and got away with it. On paper, Dreamnomore on his inside has been leading too but I think he can race forward without too much effort.”

From barrier three Graham should get him into an ideal spot but he does rise 2.5kg in weight which shouldn’t be a huge problem considering he races on the speed.

“The more you go up in weight the harder it gets but he’s the type of horse that can carry weight,” Gleeson said. “The wins have given him more confidence and it’s been good to see him win.”

Voyages is also a big chance for Gleeson in a Maiden Handicap (1500m) where Crowd Surfer is set to start favourite for Kris Lees.

But Gleeson’s runner is fourth-up now and has a big fitness edge on the fresh favourite.

“He’s been consistent and his last run was very good after he got held up and the winner then came out and won well again,” Gleeson said.

“He indicates that he’s ready to run 1500m and has had the perfect grounding for the race.

“He’s pretty close to a win. He does meet an odds-on favourite in the race but if he gets a nice smother early he’ll be hard to hold out.”

La Loi is a first starter for the stable and she’s had just two trials in the past year but won her most recent one at Muswellbrook over 880m ahead of her Maiden Plate (900m) race today.

The biggest obstacle for her is barrier 13.

“She’s always shown ability which is why we’ve put up with her for so long. She’s gone shin sore four or five times and we haven’t been able to get past the trials,” Gleeson said.

“She wasn’t tested in her last trial so we don’t know fully what we’ve got but she’s got ability. The wide draw will be hard for her and from that gate she’ll have to go forward and she’ll give a good sight.”

So what’s Gleeson’s top winning chance on Sunday?

“I think Voyages is my best hope. He’s ready to win and only has to beat one on paper. Pippi’s Pride is going well but it’s hard to win three straight but he’ll be a good show,” he said. “The wide gate is all the worries me with La Loi.”

GOULBURN

RACE 1 (1.50pm)

Song And A Prayer has raced far and wide throughout her 10 starts and while she has only won the one race, she does have a pattern of get back/run on that often has made it hard for her to get there in the end. The big, long straight here at Goulburn should give her the opportunity to reel them in if good enough. Battle Fury should get a good run just off the speed from the favourable alley and is never far away at the end. Lui Bang is a Wagga Wagga visitor who has only missed a place twice in five runs. Should medal here.

BET STRATEGY: SONG AND A PRAYER win; Exacta 2 to beat 1.

RACE 2 (2.25pm)

There are five last-start winners in the field of six but the decision still looks clear cut. The Mark Newnham-trained Mosuo came down from Queensland after failing at the Sunshine Coast but was incredibly impressive against some obstacles to win at Nowra at her stable debut. Went back to the trials and waltzed in. Indicators On was well backed to win at Orange on debut and is ready to take the next step. Bobby Dazzler is a three-quarter brother to Straspangledbanner and won on debut from almost last.

BET STRATEGY: MOSUO win; MOSUO win all-up BENFICA MAID win R4 No.1.

RACE 3 (3pm)

Triple Hero was scratched from a scheduled engagement at Gosford to run here instead which is a positive lead from a very astute trainer in Clare Cunningham. Failed first-up but is seven starts for zero return when fresh but improves out of sight with a run or two under the belt. Ignore the first-up run. Marabel has been racing far, far superior horses having contested a Group 3 last start but did fade out quickly. Big weight here. Red Heat is racing in great form at present.

BET STRATEGY: TRIPLE HERO win; Exacta 8 to beat 1.

RACE 4 (3.35pm)

Jason Coyle has a decent opinion of Benfica Maid and rightly so. The filly trialled extremely well before her debut at Newcastle where she had the misfortune to bump into a handy horse from the James Cummings yard but pushed him to his limits just the same. Scratched from Newcastle on Saturday and has drawn one for this. Winspear was a real eye-catcher winning her trial at Warwick Farm the other day. Has plenty of speed and may prove hard to catch. Korrawi is a Bjorn Baker narrow runner-up from last start.

BET STRATEGY: BENFICA MAID win; Exacta 1 to beat 5.

RACE 5 (4.10pm)

Speaking of Bjorn Baker, he has the $ 900,000 yearling Nordicus resuming here. The colt is by his father’s great champion Dundeel out of the Golden Slipper winner Miss Finland. Pure and simple, if this colt runs up to his trials then he will be winning. Bought to win much better races than a Goulburn maiden. Unknown Universe is a capable type but finds a strong race to resume in.

BET STRATEGY: NORDICUS win

RACE 6 (4.45pm)

Thorn In My Side is a Bryce Heys-trained son of Golden Rose winner Duporth out of a Snitzel mare. The gelding has a solid record of three wins and nine placings from his 18 starts and sent out all the right signals with that first-up second at Canberra when tried hard right the way to the line. With Purpose is a beautifully bred last start track/distance winner by Pierro out of Paprika who was beaten a nose by Phelan Ready in the Magic Millions. Go well again. Nines Enough is a ready to peak third-up today.

BET STRATEGY: THORN IN MY SIDE win; Quinella 1,8

RACE 7 (5.20pm)

Danny Williams-trained Arrondissement showed what she is capable off when the tempo is on and she gets a straight clear crack at them when charging past her rivals to win a Bm58 here last start. Goes up in class considerably here but she drops down from 58kg to 54kg and has Kathy O’Hara up. Magicaz is a midweek winner who wasn’t at all disgraced when five lengths off the winner at Warwick Farm at her most recent outing. Go well here. Equal Balance is another local who is wholly equipped to figure.

BET STRATEGY: ARRONDISSEMENT win; Quinella 8,13

Raceday focus: Best bets at Warwick Farm https://briefnews.eu/raceday-focus-best-bets-at-warwick-farm/ https://briefnews.eu/raceday-focus-best-bets-at-warwick-farm/#respond Tue, 23 Oct 2018 08:02:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/raceday-focus-best-bets-at-warwick-farm/ SINCE arriving at Cameron Crockett’s stables, Reprimand hasn’t been tested in her easy wins, but on Wednesday at Warwick Farm she will face her stiffest test.

The I Am Invincible mare lines up in a Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m) after belting up three fields by a combined total of 14 lengths, including a 6¼-length demolition job at Wellington last start over 900m.

Crockett knows Wednesday’s race will be her toughest but she’s a very confident mare who is in form. “She’s flying,” Crockett said. “Warwick Farm won’t worry her. She got around Wellington and won by more than six lengths, so if she can get around Wellington she can get around anywhere.”

SWEET AVA (Race 6, No.5)

This is by far the easiest race she’s contested and if she holds her current form she’ll win, despite it being a competitive little race.

Before coming to Crockett’s stables she ran second, 10th, fifth and eighth.

Since her last-start win on September 10 she has had a 1000m trial win to keep her ticking over and will jump from barrier three with Mathew Cahill again aboard.

“I just put her in my system,” Crockett said. “I just had to lift her confidence.

“She was fractious in the barriers and hitting herself, so we have taped her up heavily. She has such great gate speed and is super quick and very tough.

“We haven’t seen her under pressure yet, which is the question mark, but she has just been far too good in every race I’ve had her in, which is a good sign that she has the ability to come to town.

“We haven’t got cracking on her yet. Mathew hasn’t let her go but this is the next test. She will reach her potential next preparation.”

Cahill will drive her forward once again from an ideal gate, and Godolphin’s Beware looks to be her biggest threat.

“She’s a seven-year-old mare but has only had seven starts so we’re not racing against the clock with her,” Crockett said. “She’s still learning and I think she has a few years left in her. She is fairly valuable as a broodmare, though, being a full sister to Fiesta.”

Meraki Miss is the other Crockett runner on the card and she also comes into today’s meeting off a bush win, at Orange over 1000m.

She lines up in a Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m) and Cahill will ride her from barrier nine, which is ideal.

Crockett believes Meraki Miss has a bright future and he has decided not to shoot her straight up the grades in easier races.

He wants to claim a city win with her but it’s a competitive race against the likes of Pierina, Sweet Ava and Prahaar.

“I think she’s a highway horse in the making,” Crockett said.

“I’m taking her to town because I think she’s going better than when she won at Orange.

“That run has really brought her on in the coat and she has really strengthened up and put on weight. I think she can run a decent race.”

Meraki Miss will be trying to swamp them late.

“We’ve been trying to teach her to settle and find the line and we’ll continue that same pattern again,” Crockett said. “She just needs a bit of cover and even though she hasn’t had a start on a soft track I don’t think it will matter.”

Meantime, trainer Paul Cave and Nacho Libre are riding a wave together, so there’s no reason why he can’t match it with the city-class horses at Warwick Farm.

The five-year-old is coming off wins at Kembla Grange and Canberra at his past two runs and has turned into a proper racehorse ahead of his Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m).

“The horse has pulled up a treat since his last run and is very well,” Cave said.

“I just hope the track improves because he’s not at his best on wet tracks, but I think it will improve for him. No horse minds the jar out of it but we don’t want it chopped up and shifty.

“He’s fit and peaking. He enjoyed a few days out at our farm at Mulgoa after his last run.”

Nacho Libre always had the tools to be a force on the track but needed a break after his last run last preparation in February. Cave knew some time to mature was what Nacho Libre needed and he has come back to fulfil his potential.

“He has come back this time a lot better,” Cave said. “He didn’t have any serious problems, it was more to do with his attitude. This time back in he wants to work and is generally enjoying his work. He has matured a lot and is a lot more confident in himself.

“Last preparation he wasn’t too sure what was going on but he’s happy as Larry now.”

Cave expects jockey Blake Spriggs to drive Nacho Libre forward and take bad luck out of the equation from barrier nine.

“He has good gate speed so I don’t want him hanging out the back, especially with the way the tracks are playing of late,” he said.

“He did it all very easy at his past two starts and I’d like to think he can do it again. We won’t change what’s working at the moment. The mile looks good for him.”

INSIDE MAIL WITH MATT JONES

RACE 1 (2pm)

Is this 1. Adana’s day? He probably should’ve won already but is still looking for a breakthrough win at start seven. If he’s going to win, it’s here. 3. Flying Legend ran behind a good one on debut so there’s a lot to like about him and he handles the wet. 7. Virtual Insanity has to be the fittest horse in this race after three good runs in Victoria and the 1300m should suit. It will also help 5. Napoleon Solo who found 1100m a touch short last time. Watch out of 6. Taj, he’s a monster of a horse and ran well on debut at the provincials.

BET: FLYING LEGEND to win.

RACE 2 (2.35pm)

1. Betty Blooms debuts and comes off a lovely lead-up trial win and she’s improved off each of her three trails so she should do well here. She beat home 7. Singing Sand by a large margin in that heat but the Godolphin horse will have support. 2. Georgia Hit will improve second-up and she was good enough to run 2½ lengths off star colt Graff in Stakes grade last preparation. 6. Proven Class was given a good hitout in her last trail so expect a forward showing. 8. Sunsuzie was going her best work late last start so watch out for her.

BET: BETTY BLOOMS to win.

RACE 3 (3.10pm)

2. Ilwendo looked like he was going to beat Shangani Patrol at the turn last start but Matthew Dale’s stayer dug deep and nabbed him on the line. These two look hard to separate again over an extra 200m but don’t be surprised if Ilwendo turns the tables. 1. Tamarack gets his chance to get another win by dropping in grade today. If he runs up to his best he’s a huge threat at his home track. 4. Everly Girl is better suited back to 2400m after struggling over 2800m last time. 7. Jagger will keep coming at them as will 6. Red Dubawi.

BET: ILWENDO to win.

RACE 4 (3.50pm)

7. Reprimand is “flying” at the moment, according to trainer Cameron Crockett, and it’s easy to understand why. She’s been belting them up in the bush but will be tested for the first time in a while on city grade here. She’ll push forward and make her own luck. 8. Beware drops in class for his first-up run and he’s running as a gelding for the first time. He’s got the talent to win. 5. Pro Consul loves rain-affected tracks and will like dropping back to 1000m and is the each-way hope of the race. 3. Ellie’s Encore’s form says she’ll do well and the drying track helps.

BET: REPRIMAND to win.

RACE 5 (4.30pm)

4. Watchdog is peaking fitness-wise after a good second-up win in lesser grade, but the step up here isn’t a huge one and he’s got to be a chance again. 6. Campari came over from New Zealand with a bit of hype and he didn’t let punters down by winning well at Wyong, defeating Flamin’ Al who won his next start well so she’s got to be a big hope again. The blinkers helped 5. Andaz last start and he’s raced against some nice types in the past so he’s well-placed in this grade. 1. Chaussure hasn’t raced in two years but was very good in winning two from three.

BET: CAMPARI to win.

RACE 6 (5.10pm)

8. Prahaar should start over the odds. She won at Wyong last start but is a city-class horse. She would have won at Randwick on debut if she didn’t throw the rider in the closing stages when in front. 1. Pierina is a nice type and she’s proven first-up and after two solid trials should be coming at them late. 12. Pohutukawa drops in grade for her fist-up assignment and Godolphin are so good at winning this midweek races at Warwick Farm and she’ll give it a shake. 5. Sweet Ava was less than three lengths off Gem Song last start. A repeat of that run means she wins this. It’s by far the easiest race she’s contested. She hasn’t raced in a month though.

BET: Boxed trifecta 1, 5, 8.

RACE 7 (5.50pm)

4. Nacho Libre has turned the corner this preparation and deserves a crack at city grade and he makes his own luck. He just needs a drying track. 2. Velocita’s last-start win was coming for a while and she can continue that form in the same grade of race with 3.5kg more on her back. 1. Equipped hasn’t won a mile yet but loves the trip and will improve second-up. 6. Danzie is on the quick back up, which is much more ideal than the break he had heading into his last run. 12. Kaapfever is back to his favourite trip now and always runs an honest race. He’s a nice hope if he finds a length.

BET: KAAPFEVER each-way.

La Loi is now a five-year-old mare but trainer Stephen Gleeson has kept the faith and she finally makes it to the races in the Maiden Handicap (900m).

Gleeson revealed he purchased La Loi for just $ 4,000 at the Scone Yearling Sales four years ago as she is closely related to stable star, Don’t Tease Me.

“We have had a lot of luck with La Loi’s family, particularly Don’t Tease Me, which is why we bought her in the first place,’’ Gleeson said.

“She’s a beautifully-bodied mare, a very good type with plenty of ability, but she is thick set and it has been a matter of whether her legs can hold her big frame.

BEST BETS WITH RAY THOMAS: MUSWELLBROOK

BEST BET: MARATHON (Race 8, No. 1)

Marathon is a tough competitor racing in very good form. He excels around 1400m and is a winner over this course and distance. He’s well drawn and should get the run of the race.

NEXT BEST: TIPPLER (Race 3, No. 12)

Tippler has been placed in each of her three starts and ran well at Newcastle when a close third over 1600m. She is coming back slightly to 1500m today which is no issue. Drawn perfectly and well weighted. This is her chance.

BEST VALUE: IAMACRUMPET (Race 9, No. 3)

Iamacrumpet is a lightly-raced four-year-old mare when resuming as she tore around the Muswellbrook 1000m course to win easily in very fast time. She has drawn right off the track here but that means bookies will take risks with her.

TRAINER TO FOLLOW: PAUL PERRY

The champion Newcastle trainer has a powerful team entered for Muswellbrook including Macal (race 2), Without Conviction (race 5) and Marathon (race 8).

***********************************************

“She has been in and out of work a lot but has gone shin sore four or five times.

“I think this is the first time we have been able to keep her together at this stage of her preparation.’’

La Loi showed good natural speed and dominated a recent Muswellbrook barrier trial, convincing Gleeson the mare is ready to go to the races.

“Her time wasn’t flash but she won the trial quite easily,’’ Gleeson said.

“Naturally, I would have preferred she drew a bit better than barrier 13 but I think if she goes like her trial she can overcome the wide gate.

“Looking at the race on paper, I would be surprised if she doesn’t get across.’’

Gleeson also saddles up Pippi’s Pride in the day’s feature race, the Kayuga Cup (1450m).

Pippi’s Pride is lining up for his 61st career start after scoring his eighth win in the Denman Cup on home track of Muswellbrook three weeks ago.

“He led most of the way and was there to be beaten last start,’’ Gleeson said. “He got headed in the straight but fought back hard. He’s in good form.’’

Gleeson also revealed Don’t Tease Me is due to resume training after a disappointing winter preparation.

Don’t Tease Me has been a great money-spinner for Gleeson stable, winning eight of his 41 starts and nearly $ 250,000 prizemoney.

“I don’t think he quite came up last campaign,’’ Gleeson admitted.

“Nothing went right for him last time in and hopefully he can bounce back.

“There is no reason he can’t and he did race very well last summer. He’s had a good break now so we are looking forward to getting him back into training.’’

Don’t Tease Me was in career-best form late last year, winning at Rosehill beating the smart Bon Amis and then finishing a close third to Princefamous at Randwick.

PERRY’S BACKING MACAL AND MARATHON – RAY THOMAS

MARATHON will be suited by the bigger track and Macal is a different filly with blinkers on.

This was champion trainer Paul Perry’s succinct summation of his stable two best chances at the Muswellbrook meeting.

The very consistent Marathon has to shoulder topweight of 59.5kg for the Tab.com.au Kayuga Cup (1450m).

But Perry said Marathon continues to hold his form and should get the right run from his good draw (barrier six).

“Marathon is never far away, he is a very consistent horse,’’ Perry said.

“The bigger track at Muswellbrook suits him as I don’t think he was all that comfortable at Cessnock last start in the Jungle Juice Cup but he still ran well for third.

“He also ran well at Warwick Farm before that (second to Mahalangur). He tries hard and this looks a good race for him.’’

Perry is also bullish about the chances of lightly-raced filly Macal in the Magic Millions Maiden (900m).

Macal has been placed in two of her four starts including a third to Boom Queen at Taree last month.

But Perry experimented with blinkers on the daughter of Mossman in a Gosford trial and she reacted brilliantly, winning the trial by nearly four lengths eased down.

“Macal did trial ‘terrific’ in the blinkers,’’ Perry said.

“She has been improving with racing but the blinkers have made a big difference. She is well suited in the Muswellbrook race.’’

Perry is sending eight runners across six races to Muswellbrook today including last start Port Macquarie winner Without Conviction in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate (1750m) and the emerging Shark Alley in the Class 1 Handicap (1280m).

“Without Conviction did a good job at ‘Port’ and she is there to run well again although the wide draw makes it tougher for her,’’ Perry said.

“Shark Alley is a young horse I like and although he has also drawn wide, he should run well, too.’’

Perry also revealed talented Perast has pulled up well after his closing third in the Moonga Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday.

Perast, a multiple stakeswinner, has been improved by two runs from a spell and Perry believes the four-year-old son of super sire Snitzel will be suited when he gets to Flemington next month.

“We are looking at a race on Melbourne Cup Day, a Group 3 over 1400m,’’ Perry said. “He’s working his way back into form.’’

Perry said Heritage Stakes winner Ragged Rascal will be switched back to sprints after he struggled over the 1600m when down the track in The Autumn Sun’s Caulfield Guineas.

“I’ve put him in a Group 3 over 1200m at Moonee Valley on Saturday,’’ Perry said. “I’m not sure he gets a mile strongly but over the shorter trip, off the faster tempo, he should be able to run home like he did when he won at Randwick.’’

INSIDE MAIL WITH RAY THOMAS: MUSWELLBROOK

RACE 1

La Loi is a five-year-old mare finally making her race debut. She is trained on the track looked the part winning a barrier trial here late last month. Drawn wide but has good natural speed, Miss Eimar ran a good race of the Muswellbrook 900m course back in March and can race well fresh. Starletto is an improving, speedy filly who comes off a good run at Cessnock, and Artistic Queen has been mixing her form but is capable of being in the finish.

BETTING STRATEGY: BOX TRIFECTA 2,8,12,14

RACE 2

Macal improving with racing and followed a competitive third at Taree with a brilliant trial win at Gosford. She is wearing blinkers for the first time in a race but had them on in the trial. The soft track won’t worry her. Kohinoor Road was in cruise mode when a close second in a Newcastle barrier trial which she could have won easily. She is poised to run a competitive race on debut. First starters Royal Swagger and She’s Strong both come off smart trial wins.

BETTING STRATEGY: MACAL EACH WAY

RACE 3

Tippler has been placed in all three starts and gets her chance today. To be fair, she had every chance at Newcastle last start but only went under by a half length. Coming back slightly in trip and drawn to advantage. Oakfield Romance has been placed in six of her eight starts including her Wyong third last outing although she seemed to struggle in the heavy going. The firmer the track the better her chances. Palais De Louvre hasn’t been far away in each of her four career starts and Lights Of Como is an each way chance.

BETTING STRATEGY: TIPPLER TO WIN

RACE 4

Cortesta and Lady Of Kos come out of the same race at Canberra last start. Cortesta never got clear galloping room and Lady Of Kos hit the line hard for second after getting a fair bump from an off balance Jersey Rose at the 300m. Both should be in the finish. Ocean Dash showed good acceleration to win a Warwick Farm barrier trial on a heavy track and can run well on debut. Regal Cannon got shunted back at Coonamble before finishing hard late for third, C’est Davinchi and Magic Ray have claims.

BETTING STRATEGY: CORTESTA EACH WAY, BOX TRIFECTA 4,6,8,10

RACE 5

Cartel is ready to win. He’s been placed in all four starts since resuming including a hat-trick of seconds at Newcastle. Chased home the handy Nicco Lad last Tuesday and should go close today. Front View, a half brother to Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup winner Viewed, and ran an encouraging first-up race over 1500m at Newcastle and will enjoy the extra distance. Hammoon Ballad and Ellie Beach are place chances.

BETTING STRATEGY: CARTEL TO WIN

RACE 6

Magic Beneteau has steadily improved with each run this preparation and broke through for a deserved win at Dubbo when he stormed home from well back on the turn. From the good barrier he won’t have to settle so far back today. Hard to beat again. Yambaah Prince was specked at odds when resuming at Port Macquarie where he finished fast to win narrowly. This race is no harder. Toast and The Wild Wild West should be competitive

BETTING STRATEGY: QUINELLA 3,4

RACE 7

Boom Queen tried hard when third in a class 2 at Newcastle last start. She won at Taree four starts back and has held her form since. In a race with many chances, she looks hard to beat. Damit won well at Moruya and would have been top pick but for the wide barrier. Litt Up won his maiden impressively at Tamworth and Delete is racing well but awkwardly drawn.

BETTING STRATEGY: BOX TRIFECTA 1,3,5,14

RACE 8

Marathon has the right form to win this race. He’s racing very consistently and chased home the very promising Mahalangur at Warwick Farm before his third in the Jungle Juice Cup at Ceesnock. Tough and genuine, he’s the best horse in the race and just needs even luck in running. Aragula had absolutely no luck in a Randwick Highway last start and went to the line full of running. His previous form was very consistent and will test Marathon. Pippi’s Pride led throughout to win the Denman Cup here last start and he should run well again. Miami Dade has drawn the car park but if he gets any luck in running, he can make his presence felt.

BETTING STRATEGY: MARATHON EACH WAY, SAVER ON ARAGULA

RACE 9

Iamacrumpet led throughout and dominated her rivals to win a Muswellbrook 1000m maiden in a very fast 56.84s, with a final 600m sectional in 33.1s. Promising mare with plenty of natural speed which can negate her wide draw. Sister Joy is very honest and she gets in well after the claim. Tully Ho has been improved by two runs from a spell and Rock The World has been impressive winning her last two starts but the wide barrier is a concern.

BETTING STRATEGY: IAMACRUMPET TO WIN, BOX TRIFECTA 1,2,3,7

The Snippetson four-year-old is shooting for win three at start seven and has only just started to turn himself into the real deal with two wins and a luckless fifth this time in.

“He’s a very good horse who had some dramas and has needed time,” Morton said. “He was a naughty boy at his first couple of runs. I sent him to Tim McIntosh to sort him out and he came back and was a good thing beaten at Grafton then we spelled him.

“He bolted in at his first two runs this preparation then got absolutely barrelled last start. My jockey had to stand up in the irons and pull him out of the race.”

Mister Smartee is Morton’s runner in the main race of the day, the Tuncurry-Forster Gold Cup (2100m). He’s got to get past the favourite White Boots if he’s to win and Morton said jockey Blake Spriggs might use the good gate (3) to his advantage.

“He put in a very big run in the Wyong Cup Prelude (third) over the same trip and I think he wouldn’t have been even better if there was more pace on in that race,” Morton said.

“We’ll try and have him a little bit closer this time and we may even lead. I’ve had a look at the field and there’s not much speed in it so he could go to the front.

“I think he’s matured and is a good 2000m horse now and I’d like to take him to the Port Macquarie Cup as long as he races well enough in this race.”

Acoustix could get Morton’s day off to the perfect start by winning on debut in a Maiden Handicap (1000m) and he’s a cracking Snitzel colt.

Morton got him out of the Magic Millions sales and decided not to race him in his juvenile season. He ran second of 10 in his lead-up barrier trial over 1008m.

“He’s a very smart horse and we’ve taken out time with him to let him mature after not racing him as a two-year-old,” he said. “I’m expecting a very forward showing and he’ll be very competitive. He’s doing everything right now.”

O’Driscoll is Morton’s other runner on the day and resumes in a Benchmark 58 Handicap (1500m) which he feels is the right race to kick him off him.

“He’s going to turn into a very nice middle-distance horse this time in,” Morton said. “He’s first-up with a big weight (61.5kg) but his work has been very good and I think he’s going to do well this preparation.

“He won at Port Macquarie by five lengths in a fairly handy field and then he went a bit hard in front on a heavy track and weakened but he was ready for the paddock by then.”

Davies keen to produce Magic

HE’S drawn the car park but if Magic Name gets a bit of luck he’s got the ability to surprise his rivals in the Class 1 Handicap (1400m) at Tuncurry.

Trainer Angela Davies couldn’t believe her bad luck when her Magic Albert six-year-old drew the widest gate but said if there were scratchings she’d glean more hope. Darryl McLellan’s ride will be as crucial as Magic Name’s run if the pair are to combine for a win.

“The horse has shown potential and I thought we’d be a good chance in this race but he’s drawn a terrible gate and we’ll have to ride him cold,” Davies said. “We’ll jag and go back and it will be hard to run them down if the track is wet, but if he gets all the breaks he’s a chance. Anything can happen in racing and he’ll do well if he gets the breaks.”

Magic Name has yet to manage more than two runs in four previous preparations due to injuries but he’s second-up today off a sixth placing at Taree over 1250m on August 19. He’ll take plenty of improvement out of that run, fitness-wise.

“He won’t handle a bog but he’ll like a bit of sting out of it (ground) and if they don’t get much rain it will be the perfect surface,” Davies said.

“He’s been very injury-prone which has been the unfortunate part about him, so it’s been frustrating to say the least. It’s nice to have him back. We think he tore a rib cartilage which is different, but you get the odd one that tears.”

If McLellan can find a spot near midfield he’ll give Magic Name a chance of recording win two at start seven. “He’s a big, long horse and the track will suit him but he can’t get too far back. Hopefully he can pinch a bit of ground up the inside and get through,” Davies said.

INSIDE MAIL WITH MATT JONES

RACE 1 (12.50pm)

14. Dream A Lot has the wide gate but is racing in fine form. She would have won last start had she had better luck in the run. 6. Ultimate Power has had two solid lead-up trials on good tracks. He won’t get that on debut but is from a powerhouse stable. Tas Morton thinks his first starter 5. Acoustix will run a race on debut. He’s a Snitzel colt so he will handle the wet track. 9. I’m Fluent gets barrier one and Ben Looker sticks with her after trialling her.

BET: Quinella 5, 6.

RACE 2 (1.25pm)

6. Rosesay got through a heavy track with no issues on debut. As long as that run didn’t take it out of her second-up, she will be in this for a long way and can go one better than second. 3. Directory has a wide gate but can get back and finish off her races, so look for her late. 1. Manhattan Gambler drops in grade after racing fairly at the provincials this preparation and this is his race to win from a good gate. 9. Great Danger has won his two barrier trials and is very forward for this.

BET: MAHATTAN GAMBLER to win.

RACE 3 (2.05pm)

1. Starvino resumes off a six-length barrier trial win and is dropping in grade for this. Will get a good run from the gate, which is crucial with the big weight on a wet track. 9. Tyrrhenian couldn’t get into a good spot on debut and ran into the back of a few in the straight when it looked to have plenty left to offer. 2. Avalene was unlucky not to win on debut and will get a charmed run in the big field. Will come off the back of one to let down. 6. Blind Love can’t draw a gate but with even luck should be running home.

BET: STARVINO to win, TYRRHENIAN each-way.

RACE 4 (2.40pm)

4. Sunsout Shirtsoff broke through last start. He will handle the track and should stay the trip. 12. Tam O’Shanter isn’t the worst six-start maiden and she too will run the 2100m right out. The wet track is the query. 10. Lake Hayes should present better value after starting short at her past four runs, mostly in higher grade, so maybe she’s worth one more chance. 5. Miss Zodiac should be considered on past form and should handle the soft track.

BET: TAM O’SHANTER to win.

RACE 5 (3.20pm)

1. Magic Name has drawn horribly but is in good enough form to win this race if he gets luck in running. 6. Keeva has drawn much better and comes off a nice win last start. Has only missed a placing twice in 12 runs. 2. Matakauri drops back in grade for this Class 1 after winning his maiden two starts in Newcastle. He wasn’t disgraced last start at the provincials, so he’s a major player. 3. Diamond Deluxe has also drawn wide but has the ability to be in the finish if she gets to the lead with ease.

BET: MATAKAURI to win.

RACE 6 (3.55pm)

1. O’Driscoll doesn’t have great fresh form and might need the run. But he performs very well at this distance and will be up on the speed making his own luck. 3. Sniponet only ran behind the handy Editors last start and he will love the rain-affected surface. Will be in the finish somewhere despite the wide gate. 7. Serious Dancer has run into better fields than she faces here and will be in the first three on settling. 10. Divisional has a poor winning record but often pops up to run place.

BET: SERIOUS DANCER to win.

RACE 7 (4.35pm)

How do they beat 2. White Boots here? He’s shooting for three in a row and won in town last start. Should be too classy for his rivals. 5. Mister Smartee is flying and will push the favourite all the way. He will love the trip and wet track. 7. Lamma Hilton has very strong form behind her after last start finishing three lengths off Cormac, who went on to win at Randwick on Wednesday. She will be coming home hard late. 6. Smith and 4. Lady Evelyn are hopes and 3. Loud Enough might be over the odds.

BET: WHITE BOOTS to win.

RACE 8 (5.10pm)

Tas Morton is expecting 11. Better Not Fly to win this race. He had no luck last start and won two in a row before that. He can bounce back. 5. Imperial Eagle returned to form last start and is a winning chance again in this grade. 9. Typhoon Bonny gets the good run from the gate and will be up on the speed. She has become so consistent of late and hasn’t missed a top-three finish in six runs. 6. He’s Our Toy Boy will give a good sight and should be close to the placings again.

BET: BETTER NOT FLY to win.

BEST BET

CASADIVA (R5, No.9)

Not beaten all that far when she resumed in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield first-up from a spell. Go back to her debut at Bendigo, where she defeated two smart horses — Aristocratic Miss and Krone — comfortably when she led throughout and she’s got to take beating. Brent Stanley has her set for Group 1 races.

LATEST BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS

NEXT BEST

ARISTIA (R3, No.11)

The Ellerton/Zahra camp have a big opinion of this filly and she’s also set for big races so needs to make an impact in this. Sat wide when she resumed from a spell when first-up fifth at Sandown Lakeside. Group 3 placegetter who should be able to overcome a wide draw.

MAJOR OAK (R1, No.3)

Bred to appreciate the step up to 2142m after his debut second at Donald, where he ran on well, as he’s by Pentire out of a High Chaparral stakeswinning mare.

VALUE BET

BILLABONG BABE (R6, No.4)

Talented mare resuming from a spell. She trialled well at Tatura recently and from her inside draw with a four-kilo claim from Mikeala Claridge will also aid her chances.

ZOOLOGY (R4, No.6)

“He got a bit of a bad knock coming out of the barrier and after that took a couple of strides to get going. 1000m was always going to be too short but up to 1200m will suit and his work’s been sensational. I’m confident he’ll win.”

CASADIVA (R5, No.9)

“She’s whacked her stifle when she was first-up at Caulfield and she pulled up a bit average in the behind. She’s back to her best and I think she’s the best horse in my stable, so she should be winning a Class 1 at Echuca.”

The Pluck five-year-old is coming off a 1½-length win in the South Grafton Cup (1610m) and Quinn said he was looking just as good for Thursday’s $ 80,000 Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m).

INJURY ENDS MENARI’S TILT AT THE EVEREST

“He hasn’t gone backwards,” Quinn said. “I think it was one of his best wins because he got all the breaks, which he’s never really got when he’s won before.

“He won his Highway when three-deep without cover the whole way, which was pretty tough, then he won the Country Championships heat when he got into trouble at the 800m and had to circle the whole field.”

will no doubt give every chance.

HAWKESBURY

BEST BET: WHITE BOOTS (Race 8, No. 4)

Still untapped and looks to be headed towards city racing, sooner rather than later. The 1800m should not be an issue.

TEAM SNOWDEN has a few nice chances, including Surging To Win, Sytus and Classic Thoughts.

Thursday’s race is stronger than his last one and Cogliere goes up 1kg in weight but still gets into the event well and will jump from barrier three with Matthew McGuren on board.

Quinn said there was no reason why he couldn’t win again.

“I thought he was very sharp last time and I said before that race that whatever beats him will win the race,” he said. “He was near unstoppable that day and he’s in the zone.

“I think it will be the same in this race. He’s drawn perfect and whatever beats him in this race will win it as well. He’s flying at the moment.

“I think he’s well placed in this race and that’s my job.”

However, the field is a formidable one. A few city runners have made the trip up to take on the bush horses, including Curragh, who is set to start favourite. He was unlucky in town on a Saturday two starts back and won its last start at Warwick Farm in a midweek event.

But Quinn isn’t fazed by them or Brazen, who he beat last start to get revenge for a loss to the Brett Cavanough runner a start earlier. He has an awkward draw, though.

“There are horses like Pelethronius and Curragh who are city winners but they probably want the track wetter and they’re not going to get that,” Quinn said.

“Brazen meets us a kilogram better but he’ll have to do a bit of work from that gate to go forward, while we’ll be fifth of sixth with cover.

“I just think my horse gets the ideal run and he’s in it up to his ears.

“I imagine Belinda Hodder will go forward on the Sawtell Cup winner (Eight Below).”

Cogliere has triumphed twice in three runs at the Cup distance and has won at his only attempt on the Coffs Harbour track. He tends to race at his best when on top of the ground, too, but a spot of rain wouldn’t hinder his chances.

After this run he will tackle the Taree Cup (August 19) before trying to win his hometown race over 2000m on October 5.

“It’s been a deliberate plan to pick these races off until he gets to the Port Macquarie Cup,” Quinn said. “At the moment the mile is probably his best trip but I think he can be a force over 2000m.”

HAWKESBURY

White Boots looks to tie up another triumph

WHITE Boots faces a tougher test at Hawkesbury but trainer Kim Waugh says he is up to it and will continue to improve off a last-start win.

That was at Cessnock, which was easier than the Benchmark 67 Handicap (1800m) he faces on Thursday, but Waugh says the jump up 230m in distance plays right into his hands.

“He’s just going like he’s going to get over a trip and he pulled up very well from that last run, and I think he’ll be even better over 1800m,” Waugh said. “I’m not sure how far he’ll get out to but I think he’ll get the 1800m pretty well based on the way he works and races.

“He’s going great and I’m very happy with how he’s been going this preparation. He’s come back a bit stronger and more mature.”

Star jockey James McDonald takes over from Aaron Bullock and Waugh won’t need to give him any instructions on the Animal Kingdom four-year-old.

He’s looking for hsi fourth win from six starts and looks like a city horse, but Waugh has taken her time with him and is enjoying the way he’s going through his grades.

“He’s very fit and well and James is riding him so I think we’ve done well. James is hard to get,” she said. “He’ll sit in behind the leaders somewhere but if he starts really well I’ll just leave it up to James. He can sort it out.

“He is untapped. He’s one of those horses that just keep improving. It’s a bit hard to say where he’ll get to but I think he’ll be even better next preparation.”

White Boots may be in good form but he won’t have the race handed to him on a platter.

Belle Du Sud, Classic Thoughts and Gravitate all have their claims and Scratches comes off a last start win.

INSIDE MAIL WITH MATT JONES

COFFS HARBOUR

RACE 5 (2.50pm)

4. Anzio will go forward and give a good sight after a nice last-start win on the Gold Coast. Running out the 2000m is the question mark. He’s had three goes at it for three unplaced runs, but off his last win you would have to have confidence in him. 7. Chantilly Chateau drops 4.5kg for this and will run out the trip from a good gate. 9. I’ll Miss You is going great guns and loves the distance. She also drops greatly in weight and will be there at the end. 10. Light Motion and 12. Saint Element are also big players.

BET STRATEGY: I’LL MISS YOU win.

RACE 6 (3.25pm)

1. Lucky Meteor loves the track and distance but from the wide gate will have to do some work to get to the front so the first few hundred metres is crucial. 8. Alot Like Home also has an awkward gate but returned well from a spell and has a good second-up record, so it’s easy to stick with him. 13. Still Undaunted is a real winner, having won seven from 16, but a few of them have come in weaker races but he’s still racing well enough to win this. 2. Epic Dan comes off a good run in city midweek grade and going up to 1200m helps him now and if he holds his form he’s the one to beat.

BET STRATEGY: EPIC DAN win.

RACE 7 (4.05pm)

7. Curragh is just about the best horse in the race but he really wants a wet track. He did win in town last start on a Good 4 track, though. 12. Zamex has a tricky gate but that’s the only knock on him and he’ll thrive over the trip and look the winner at some stage. As will 5. Cogliere who will just get a cushy run behind the speed with cover. As long as he doesn’t run into slow horses, he’s going to be hitting the line hard. 2. Pelethronius hasn’t won in a while but that’s been in city grade and he gets Hugh Bowman to guide him.

BET STRATEGY: Boxed trifecta 5, 7, 12, 16.

RACE 8 (4.45pm)

He’s got 60kg and a wide gate but it’s hard not to like 1. Evopex after his last-start win in a stronger field. He just needs a bit of luck and her can salute again. 3. Gordon’s Leap is looking for 1600m now and is very fit after three runs back, which have included two wins so his confidence is sky high and he gets the dream run. 9. Real Time Warrior comes into this in good form, too, but is dropping back 600m in trip. It shouldn’t matter because he’s been nicely freshened for this and should be strong late. 10. Fine Verse should be leading and will give a good sight, while 5. Exorbitance is in career-best form.

BET STRATEGY: EVOPEX win.

HAWKESBURY

RACE 5 (2.30pm)

1. Stone Cold only finished three lengths off Our Malambo last start at Randwick and Oria was just in front of him at the finish and it came out and won at Rosehill last Saturday, so if he holds his form he should just about win this. 2. Black Chilli is another coming off a Saturday race in town. He may have finished last to Bandiour but was less than four lengths off the winner and this is a much more suitable race. All of 3. Lucky Symbol’s six wins have come over 1000m. 5. Invincible Gangster and 7. Rastafarian are threats.

BET STRATEGY: STONE COLD win.

RACE 6 (3.05pm)

4. Squaw Peak comes back to 1100m and that looks more ideal than the 1250m last start. This is an easier race and he’s won at the track and distance before so he rates highly. 6. Surging To Win won well to end his short campaign last time in and has trialled with a win at Hawkesbury on July 23. This is a good race to kick-off in. 1. Our Royal Egyptian hasn’t been able to match it with them in town so far but has won at the provincials before and has his first run for Brad Widdop, who is coming off a very successful season. 5. Tiny Taj is lightly raced but looks to have the talent to win after trialling well for James Cummings.

BET STRATEGY: Quinella 4, 5.

RACE 7 (3.45pm)

4. Given Time is well placed here after falling short in town to end his last campaign. He trialled nicely behind the smart stablemate Star Of The Seas. 5. Homework was great on debut in town when looking good to the line and he looks like a determined horse, which will take him a long way in this race, and Joe Pride’s horses are always better second-up. 3. Cool Dude Ausbred might be looking for further but can sprint well first-up and there’s a bit of form around him. 10. Begin takes on older horses on debut and Godolphin must rate him to start him here.

BET STRATEGY: HOMEWORK win.

RACE 8 (4.20pm)

4. White Boots won easily last start and this isn’t too much harder for him. Trainer Kim Waugh thinks he’ll be even better over this trip. James McDonald rides him, too. 6. Classic Thoughts drops in grade and is peaking first-up after a few good runs and looks to be working up to this trip nicely. 9. Belle Du Sud was unlucky not to win last time and should improve off that run and be in the finish again, but it looks like White Boots is going to be very hard to beat. 3. Gravitate put in a forgive run last start and can bounce back at a track he likes racing at.

BET STRATEGY: WHITE BOOTS win.
