  • RBG would have fought back against Samuel Alito's Roe v. Wade opinion, her longtime friend says.
  • NPR's Nina Totenberg discussed the late Supreme Court Justice in an interview this week.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would have been displeased with her inclusion in Justice Samuel Alito's majority opinion overturning Roe v. Wade earlier this year, according to Ginsburg's longtime friend and peer.

NPR legal correspondent Nina Totenberg spoke about her years-long friendship with the late judge in an NPR interview this week while promoting her forthcoming book "Dinners with Ruth." During the conversation, Totenberg suggested that Ginsburg, a fierce defender of women's rights, would have fought back against Alito's choice to quote her in his polarizing opinion.

The Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade in a 5-4 decision that gutted the nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling that legalized abortion nationwide, following an unprecedented leak of the draft opinion in the case.

In his majority decision, Alito cited Ginsburg twice in arguing his belief that Roe was "egregiously wrong from the start," 

"Everybody knows that if she had been alive, she would have taken his skin off over that section, but it remained in the opinion," Totenberg said of Ginsburg's quote.

In a lecture published in the 1992 issue of the New York University Law Review, Ginsburg argued that Roe v. Wade didn't go far enough in enshrining a women's right to choose. 

"Roe…halted a political process that was moving in a reform direction and thereby, I believed, prolonged divisiveness and deferred stable settlement of the issue," Alito quotes Ginsburg near the start of his 98-page opinion.

Totenberg said Alito's decision to include Ginsburg's voice was one made in bad faith.

"I think that's an indication of how much bad feeling there is among the justices on this court that that section was not taken out because it was written out of context completely," the journalist said.

Ginsburg throughout her life was open in her reservations about the legal basis on which Roe was passed, arguing that the landmark ruling actually "stopped the momentum that was on the side of change" in favor of abortion rights. She believed it would have been more effective for the court to consider a case that emphasized a woman's right to choose on the matter of equal protection under the law, rather than the right to privacy on which the case was ultimately decided.

Ginsburg died at the age of 87 in 2020. Her death opened the door for then President Donald Trump to appoint Justice Amy Coney Barrett in his effort to support judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade — which she ultimately helped do. 

In the aftermath of her death, some have criticized Ginsburg for not stepping down when Barack Obama was president so he could appoint a liberal judge to replace her.

Totenberg suggested that Ginsburg's reason for remaining was twofold: She thought the Republican-controlled Congress would block her successor, and she believed Hillary Clinton would be the next president and wanted to give the first female leader the opportunity to appoint her successor.

"She rolled the dice, and she lost," Totenberg said.

The Man Utd midfield has lacked bite at times this season and the Portuguese boss is ready to re-enter the race for Dendoncker.

According to the MEN, Mourinho had cooled his interest but the latest comments from Van Holsbeeck might reopen negotiations. 

“Dendoncker was already busy in the previous transfer period,” he said.

“But now that Kara is injured, Leander is doing a great job as a central defender and we’re not going to let our star go. 

“Unless there is an insane bid perhaps.

“These are matters that are discussed. 

“A transfer for €25-€30m is possible, but then we also need a replacement right away.”

West Ham are also heavily linked with the versatile midfielder.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who instigated the NFL anthem protests, has been named GQ magazine’s ‘Citizen Of The Year’ for 2017.

In 2013, Kaepernick appeared in a GQ photoshoot as one of the NFL’s most talented players after leading his team to the Super Bowl, where they were beaten by the Baltimore Ravens 34-31.

Four years later, he is on GQ’s front page, as a symbol of the anthem protests campaign which he instigated last season by refusing to stand for the national anthem, to draw attention to what he viewed as racial injustice in America.

The player didn’t give an interview to the magazine, but “remained silent” and posed for photographs.

“When we began discussing this GQ cover with Colin earlier this fall, he told us the reason he wanted to participate is that he wants to reclaim the narrative of his protest, which has been hijacked by a president eager to make this moment about himself,” the article reads.

“But Colin also made it clear to us that he intended to remain silent. As his public identity has begun to shift from football star to embattled activist, he has grown wise to the power of his silence.”

In the article – titled “Colin Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced” – the former football player is compared with legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, whose refusal to be drafted into the US Army’s war in Vietnam led to a three-year layoff in his professional career.

In 1967, Ali, an outspoken protester against the war, was arrested for draft dodging and stripped of all his boxing titles and licenses following his refusal to fight in Vietnam, spending more than three years out of the ring and losing millions of dollars.

The GQ photographer decided to take pictures of Kaepernick in Harlem, New York City, where Ali visited frequently, “among the men, women, and children he is fighting for…to connect him to a crusade that stretches back decades.”

The article also contains short statements of Kaepernick’s 10 closest confidants, including rapper J.Cole, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, activist Carmen Perez and national co-chair for Women’s March Tamika Mallory, who shared their views on the subject of social activism.

Kaepernick still remains unsigned after opting out of his contract with the 49ers in March. In October the 30-year-old player filed a grievance against the NFL over alleged collusion to keep him unemployed. He linked his inability to find a new club with the protests he displayed last year.

The WWE universe is turning its attention to the 2017 Royal Rumble. This year’s battle royal takes place at the Alamodome in Texas of January 29. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, last week saw WWE superstar, The Undertaker, announce that he would be entering the first big WWE PPV event of 2017. It is perhaps understandable that the bookmakers have installed the Undertaker as a shot odds favorite to win, what could be his last, Royal Rumble. The Deadman is now 51-years-old, and many fans believe that he may retire after April’s showcase event, WrestleMania 33.

The WWE universe would love to see The Undertaker triumph over 29 opponents in the 2017 Royal Rumble. A win in the event would be seen by many as the perfect way to bring a stellar career to a close. The Undertaker has n0t participated in the Royal Rumble since he won the event in 2007, so fans will be delighted if the Deadman takes the Royal Rumble crown.

Royal Rumble sees 30 WWE superstars fight it out and the last man standing wins the opportunity of a World Championship bout at WrestleMania. The WWE’s Vince McMahon has played down rumors of a bout between The Undertaker and 15-time World Champion John Cena. WWE fans will know that Cena is challenging AJ Styles for the World Championship at the Royal Rumble event. Should Cena win that bout, and The Undertaker win Royal Rumble, then a match between the pair at WrestleMania would seem inevitable.

Cena and The Undertaker have met on five occasions in the past. Both stars have two wins, and there was one “no result.” Cena and The Undertaker are two of the biggest stars that WWE has produced and the WWE universe would love to see the pair face-off, especially if this is The Undertakers final year in the WWE.

Fans of WWE Monday Night Raw where surprised at the lack of Royal Rumble announcements on this week’s show. There were some announcements on this week’s WWE SmackDown Live but the official WWE website shows that the Royal Rumble lineup is far from complete. There are still 12 Royal Rumble slots available, and for the moment at least WWE is keeping quiet about who will fill those slots.

As is often the case, bookmakers have offered a few clues as to who those final Royal Rumble participants might be. Bizarrely Irish bookmaker Paddy Power is quoting odds for two very long shots as possible Royal Rumble winners. The bookmaker is offering odds of 500/1 for Donald Trump or Barack Obama to win the 2017 Royal Rumble.

Wait, Bookmakers Are Taking Bets On Donald Trump Winning The 2017 Royal Rumble?

As a fan of WWE wrestling you will know that the WWE universe loves a good storyline. WWE stories are often months in the planning and the more outrageous the story, the more fans love the show. It is hardly likely that we will see Donald Trump enter the Royal Rumble ring, even in the outrageous world of WWE wrestling the idea would be a little too preposterous.

Despite that, Irish bookmakers, Paddy Power, are offering odds of 500/1 on either Obama or Trump winning the 2017 Royal Rumble. Compare those odds to the fact that bookmakers were offering 5000/1 odds on Leicester City winning last season’s English Premier League title. History tells us that Leicester came through and made several gamblers very happy indeed.

Donald Trump overcame very long odds to win the U.S. presidential election, and no one doubts that the new president is up for a fight. Even during the normally quiet transition period Trump has continued to lash out at his detractors, most recently at human rights campaigner John Lewis. Trump is clearly a fighter, but what are the chances of Donald Trump using his inauguration speech to declare himself a candidate for the 2017 Royal Rumble? Many would expect those odds to be a lot greater than 500/1.

Sanity does prevail in Paddy Powers odds for the Royal Rumble, they have installed The Undertaker as a very short odds favorite to win the event.
