“It’s going to be in two halves, it’s going to be 14 episodes, so the first half is going to air seven. “We’re hoping that’s sooner rather than later, it’ll be easier for us to get these first seven done.” While the Ozark writer seemed optimistic the first seven will be available “sooner rather than later”, Bateman soon jumped in with his thoughts. The Golden Globe-winner claimed that with President Joe Biden now leading the USA’s charge against the spread of COVID-19, he expects the release to come “a whole lot quicker” than initially anticipated if Donald Trump was still in the White House. Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Haunting of Hill House Episode 5. Here’s something that’ll make you even sadder — if that’s possible — aboutThe Haunting of Hill House‘s Bent-Neck Lady and her beau: Nell and Arthur’s entire love story starts and ends within a quarter-hour, series creator Mike Flanagan points out to TVLine. That means in roughly half the length of a broadcast sitcom, Victoria Pedretti’s Nell and Jordane Christie’s Arthur meet at a sleep clinic, fall in love, get engaged, find a helpful way to deal with her sleep paralysis, marry… and then tragically part when he suffers an aneurysm in the middle of the night, right as the Bent-Neck Lady appears in their bedroom. Flanagan says he’s “thrilled” that the characters resonated so well with the audience, especially given how little the two actually are seen together in the series’ first season. “Victoria and Jordane really made that love story come to life, and in a way that we really needed in order to feel the loss,” Flanagan says. “They did that in less than fifteen minutes of screen time. Over a 10-hour story, that’s an incredible testament to the actors.” He adds that he, Christie and Pedretti “talked about how we had very little real estate to flesh out that relationship, given where the story needed them to go, and when,” Flanagan says. “I’m really glad that it worked.”

Tesla has just made your Model 3 Performance EV a helluva lot more fun with the launch of Track Mode. The software shuts down all the traction control protection that normally prevents wheel slip in order to keep your car between the scenery. With that turned off, the dual electric motors are repurposed to improve cornering and, judging by Tesla’s demo video below, transform the Model 3 into a drifting machine.
All of the car’s prodigious torque can be sent to the back wheels to make them swing out in order to maximize track speeds. At the same time, power can be quickly transferred to the front wheels if things get out of hand. The system also boosts the regenerative braking power and uses the brakes to simulate a limited-slip differential.
Motor Trend tested the Model 3 Performance with an early version of Track Mode a few months ago, and, to the distress of Tesla’s engineers, beat it with an Alfa Romea Giulia Quadrifoglio. In Motor Trend’s rematch with the new software, however it thumped the latter car by a second and a half and matched the $ 86,000 Porsche Cayman GT4.
Motor Trend test driver Randy Pobst noted that Track Mode gives the driver more control, while carefully balancing the torque between the front and rear motors. “According to Tesla’s calculations, Track Mode lets the car apex earlier and begin accelerating sooner,” he said. “This simple ballet is kept carefully balanced from entry to exit by the lightning responsiveness of the electric motors and brake pads.”
The Track Mode Release Version software is now available for owners of the Model 3 Performance. Tesla, naturally, advises that you only use it on the track — so don’t, you know, try to scare the bejeezus out of your passengers like folks did with “Ludicrous Mode.”

One of the less appealing aspects of the twice-yearly Windows 10 feature updates is that they’re slow to install and, for most of the installation process, your PC is out of commission, doing nothing more than displaying a progress indicator.
Thanks to a new upgrade process, the next update—expected to be released in April—should result in substantially less downtime. The install process is split into two portions: the “online” portion, during which your PC is still usable, and the “offline” portion after the reboot, during which your PC is a spinning percentage counter.
Microsoft estimates that the Creators Update, released almost a year ago, would take about 82 minutes on average during the offline phase. Improvements made in the Fall Creators Update cut that to about 51 minutes, and the next update (which still hasn’t actually been blessed with an official name) will cut this further still, to just 30 minutes.

WRITING a ‘to-do’ list at bedtime can help you get to sleep quickly, a new study revealed today.![]()
When Tesla unveiled a brand new Roadster, it noted that the vaunted 1.9-second 0-60MPH time was present in the base model — implying that there might be headroom for even higher performance. But is there? Apparently, yes. Elon Musk has clarified that there will be a “special options package” that brings the Roadster’s speed to “the next level.” It’s vague, to be sure (does this include Founders Edition models?), but it does indicate that what Tesla quoted wasn’t necessarily the best it could muster.
It’s easy for Tesla to make these promises when the first Roadsters aren’t expected to ship until 2020. This gives it plenty of time to tackle the challenge and figure out exactly how much power they can wring out of this design. However, an even faster car is more plausible than it might seem. The key to the Roadster’s breakneck pace is cramming a 200kWh battery (twice what a Model S P100D has) into a compact body. It wouldn’t take a dramatically larger power pack to see substantial gains, even considering the added weight that usually comes with bigger EV batteries.
As it is, even a modest improvement could make the Roadster tough to beat, at least in some situations. At present, the fastest factory 0-60 time outside of Tesla belongs to Dodge’s Challenger SRT Demon at 2.3 seconds, and that’s a stripped-down single-seater. There are cars with higher top speeds, like Koenigsegg’s Agera RS, but they’re either no longer in production or aren’t as quick to hit the 60MPH mark. Provided the Roadster lives up to Tesla’s bragging, it might only face serious competition once other automakers commit to electric supercars.
Should clarify that this is the base model performance. There will be a special option package that takes it to the next level.

A week after its release, the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is already on five percent of Windows 10 machines, according to numbers provided by AdDuplex.
The previous Windows 10 update, the Creators Update, was given a very slow rollout as Microsoft sought to avoid problems faced in last year’s Anniversary Update. Five months after its release, it was only on two thirds of Windows 10 machines, and now, at what is likely to be its peak, it’s on three quarters of Windows 10 systems. The Anniversary Update itself is still installed on 17 percent of machines. In contrast, the Anniversary Update was on some 92 percent of Windows 10 devices when the Creators Update shipped.
Microsoft’s phased rollout approach distributes the update to systems using hardware and software configurations known to work, incrementally adding new configurations as more real-world data about hardware and software compatibility issues is collected and addressed. The company is believed to have a larger body of tested, known configurations to enable a faster deployment.

Few automakers exploit platform variants as much as lotus. The company has four models, one of which is essentially a hardtop version of another. The Lotus Evora 400 sits atop the range, and since its debut last year we’ve seen the Evora 410, Evora 410 GP Edition and the Evora GT430. Today, the British automaker announced the Evora GT430 Sport, essentially a less hardcore but nearly as capable version of the GT430.
The two biggest differences are the non-limited availability and the available six-speed automatic transmission. All 60 examples of the GT430 were only available with a manual. Both cars use the same 3.5-liter V6 topped with an Edelbrock supercharger that’s good for 430 horsepower. Manual models make 325 lb-ft of torque, while automatic-equipped cars make 332 lb-ft.
Despite a 24-pound penalty, the GT430 Sport automatic hits 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, a tenth quicker than the manual. While gearing in the automatic limits top speed to 170 mph, manual models can reach 196 mph. That makes this the fastest road-going Lotus ever.
No matter which one you choose, the GT430 comes with Öhlins TTX two-way adjustable dampers, slotted and ventilated brake discs with AP Racing four-piston calipers, a Torsen-type limited slip differential and an adjustable traction control system. The front and rear bumpers, front access panel, roof panel, rear quarter panels and one-piece louvered tailgate and spoiler are all made of carbon fiber. The non-Sport GT430 adds a carbon fiber front splitter, rear wing, louvered wheel arches and a wider set of wheels and tires.
The carbon fiber theme continues inside. The seats, door sills and parts of the instrument cluster are all made of the lightweight material. Most of the rest of the interior is trimmed in leather and black Alcantara.
At $ 136,000, the new GT430 Sport undercuts the limited-run model by about $ 11,000. There’s no word on if the car will make it here to the U.S. Hopefully Lotus’ new parent company will keep the ball rolling.

Riazantsev became Russian chess champion in 2016 as well as European champion in rapid chess. He also coaches the Russian women’s team.
RT: We have witnessed in the last decade that the popularity of chess has been on the decline. Has the situation changed in recent years?
Alexander Riazantsev: I believe that today the situation has changed, ever since the young Norwegian super-grandmaster Magnus Carlsen became World Chess Champion. When he became number one by defeating Anand [in 2013], interest for chess grew globally. It became absolutely obvious after the match in New York between Carlsen and Karjakin. It was a real thriller, where we had to be on our toes until the very last minute, until the tie-break. All the world media was following the match. Norwegian and Russian TV had live broadcasts. That is why I believe that chess is on the rise today. We have passed the period of decline that we experienced 10 years ago. Chess has been developing very fast, including in the United States. Such grandmasters as Webster University’s Wesley So, who is No. 2 in the world, and Fabiano Caruana [another super-Grandmaster], both are now playing for Team USA. I believe chess are booming after the Carlsen-Karjakin match, both in the US and in Russia. Chess schools are being opened all over the country, in some secondary schools chess has even become part of the curriculum. I am sure that in the near future it will produce a tremendous effect, because out of the hundreds of thousands of kids who are studying chess today, many will become professionals. I hope, we’ll see them soon winning junior and then adult competitions.
RT: The latest chess event, St. Louis Rapid and Blitz Championship, attracted much attention due to the return of Garry Kasparov to the board. How did you like the tournament?
AR: Levon Aronian has lately demonstrated very exciting and energetic chess. In classic chess, he is back again in the “2800 club” [the players with the very highest ratings]. In rapid chess, he was better than the others, that is why his victory seems logical. Kasparov’s name is known all over in the chess world, and it will always be like that. Of course, the eyes of professionals and amateur chess players were fixed on him. It was very interesting to see how he will perform after such a long break. Although it is not classic chess, but rapid chess, it’s a rather serious competition. I expected that he would perform a little better. I watched the games, he played fairly well, but apparently the lack of practice and in some instances lack of time affected the result.
RT: Speaking of St. Louis, how has a Midwestern American city become a center for chess and a training ground for professionals?
AR: Today the US team are the Olympic Champions, they really improved their game. Two of its members are from Webster University in St. Louis: Wesley So and Ray Robson. I had a chance to see them in action. Webster University has a unique team, it is a five-time all-American champion among students. I had a chance to talk to the players, and I was impressed by the team. Of course, here at Webster they have all the conditions they need for training and growth. I was here five years ago and I can see the difference and how much effort was put into development. All this is thanks to the enthusiasm and effort of the University Provost, Dr. Julian Schuster. He managed to attract some of the best players from all over the world, and this is the result. Today, chess is booming in America, many universities have teams, they try to compete but Webster is far ahead.
RT: Who among the Russian chess players besides Karjakin could compete for the world title?
AR: I believe that Vladimir Kramnik has not said yet his final word. His rating is very high: 2800+. That means that he is somewhere between 2nd and 4th place in the world. I also believe that Alexander Grischuk can compete for the world crown. He demonstrated time and again that he is capable of winning tournaments of the highest levels. I believe that players like that can definitely compete with Carlsen.
RT: What about Russian teams? The Russian women’s team came first in FIDE World Championship this July.
AR: Today, I coach the Russian women’s team. We are training for the European team championship later this year, and our goal is the gold medals. As for the men’s team, I’d rather let their coaches make assessments. However, I do know the team pretty well, the guys are capable of outstanding results. Team Russia is always among the favorites, we have great chess traditions and can win and did win before.
RT: How different is chess today from around the turn of the century?
AR: Chess have been changing rapidly. Every five years we witness a leap forward. When my carrier was just beginning, we had only just started working with computers, with databases, let alone chess programs. Today, one can’t imagine preparing for a tournament without them. We have witnessed great progress in this area, we’ve got access to a large amount of information, which allows players to progress rapidly. What took years before, nowadays can be achieved in just several months. And computer programs are also developing fast, they have become more powerful. The algorithms have become more human-oriented. The analysis has become deeper and more useful. The training at home is consuming more and more time, and thanks to that the quality of the game is rising.
RT: What future do you see for chess?
AR: As far as professional chess is concerned, I believe that in the next five years it will become faster. I expect that the time controls will become shorter, but this change would be gradual. I believe that we should keep all three forms of chess: classic chess, rapid and blitz, but the classic time control probably will be reduced. Maybe each player will get one hour, plus 30 seconds per move. Just enough to make it more dynamic, more spectacular. More so, since nowadays players have profound knowledge, this time should be enough for them to resolve the problems that they usually face during the game.
I also believe it is very important to create the infrastructure for public chess. If we install chessboards and clocks in our parks where people could compete in public events, it would help a lot. I know Moscow often holds such tournaments. I believe it is called the “chess boulevard,” a special program that allows chess fans to get together, play and compete in tournaments. So if other Russian cities support this idea, I believe we will get the infrastructure, people will get involved in developing it further. I hope, I want to believe, that one day, just like 20-30 years ago, chess will become popular again.
