COP that NSW. A new Queensland dynasty is born.

Kevin Walters’ Maroons produced one of the finest fightbacks as an old dog and two young pups inspired Queensland’s epic series-clinching 22-6 defeat of NSW in the Origin decider.

Before a ground-record 52,540 at Suncorp Stadium, the Maroons overcame the loss of Origin II casualties Johnathan Thurston and Darius Boyd as they found fresh heroes to break the Blues.

Magnificent Cameron Smith produced a skipper’s knock in his 42nd Origin game, providing the inspiration for debutant Cameron Munster and hat-trick hero Valentine Holmes to torment the Blues.

Queensland’s record-breaking dynasty was on the verge of collapse after they suffered a humiliating 28-4 defeat in Origin I.

But returning to the scene of that rout, the Maroons were never headed, bolting to a 12-0 half-time lead before Holmes and Munster floored NSW with a one-two punch to clinch an 11th series win in 12 years.

Amid the euphoria, Smith clinched man-of-the-match honours, Dane Gagai snared the Wally Lewis Medal as player of the series … and coach Walters savoured his second consecutive series win.

Paul Vautin’s ‘Neville Nobodies’ which won the 1995 series 3-0 are widely regarded as Queensland’s bravest outfit. But Walters’ Wonders are now in the same league after his blooding of eight new faces this year was emphatically vindicated by a rampant Game Three performance.

Munster was magnificent filling in for Thurston at five-eighth, while Holmes was electric, scoring a first-half double before his treble in the 60th minute speared the Blues.

The emotion was capped by the sight of the injured Thurston rushing onto the field at full-time to embrace his Maroons comrades after Smith ran across field to find him.

The Blues dictated terms in the series opener at Suncorp but on this occasion, it was Queensland who set the early pace.

The Maroons were sharp around the rucks, powerful in the middle-third and dynamic on the edges.

In Game One, NSW had a trump card in Andrew Fifita. Last night, Queensland countered with Origin’s greatest servant _ Cameron Smith.

By his own admission, the Maroons skipper was ineffective in the opening two games, making just two runs for seven metres. In Origin, ruck control is everything and this was Smith’s stage to right some wrongs.

Playing at the very venue in which he made his Maroons debut 14 years ago, Smith didn’t so much raise the bar as summon 42 games of Origin know-how to impose his tactical will on the beleaguered Blues.

Wherever you looked, Smith was Queensland’s pied piper. He had touches at first receiver. He fed the backline at second receiver. Mainly, he sliced and diced from hooker, deconstructing the Blues with the poise and precision of a neurosurgeon.

Smith’s sublime display crystallised the gulf between these fierce foes. Talent is not necessarily the issue. Self-belief is. In clutch moments, the Maroons have champions like Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater who stand up and execute under pressure.

Queensland had one hand on the trophy at half-time. But the beauty of Origin is the small, almost imperceptible twists and turns in the narrative. Half-time saved NSW … and after the break, the rallied to give the Maroons an almighty fright.

For 20 minutes, Queensland were under siege. The ray of hope for NSW came in the 48th minute, when Josh Dugan successfully soared high for a bomb to whittle the deficit to 12-6.

But on the hour, coach Walters’ selection courage was borne out in his matchwinners as rookies Munster and Holmes combined to deliver the coup de grace.

The Blues are entitled to question if their time will ever come. With a new wave of Maroons, Walters is building another great Queensland dynasty.

QUEENSLAND young gun Zahara Temara is in the mix to make her Jillaroos debut, after she was named as part of the Australian squad for next week’s Test.

On Wednesday coach Brad Donald will reveal a 25-woman squad in preparation for next Friday’s showdown with the Kiwi Ferns.

Twelve Queenslanders are set to be named in the squad, including Temara, who is one of the stars of Burleigh’s women’s team.

Temara made her debut for the Women’s All Stars side this February and is now also one step closer to earning her first Jillaroos jersey.

Fellow Queenslander, veteran Steph Hancock, is also in contention to make her comeback to the Australian side after missing last year’s Test.

Hancock had finger surgery last year and has also been battling some knee issues, but is expected to be fine for next week’s clash if she is named in the final team.

With the World Cup looming at the end of the year, Donald said the side will be looking to continue their recent domination of New Zealand, after they defeated the Kiwis at the Nines tournament in February.

“The Test match next week looms as a significant occasion for our team,” Donald said.

“Our women had a momentous win against the Ferns in Auckland at the start of this year as part of the Nines tournament.

“The Test match next week however is entirely different and we will need to be at our peak against what will no doubt be a New Zealand outfit out to make amends.”

The Jillaroos squad will go into camp on the Gold Coast on Thursday before the final team is named on Sunday.

The match against the Ferns is going to be played as part of a double-header in Canberra on May 5, along with the Kangaroos and Kiwis ANZAC Test.

THE Firebirds stayed in the hunt for Suncorp Super Netball finals with a gritty 55-50 victory over West Coast at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Queensland temporarily jumped back into the top four with the win and will stay there for at least a week if GWS beat Collingwood in Sydney on Sunday.

The Firebirds play the Magpies in Tasmania next Sunday in what amounts to a double-points clash as the sides are locked in a battle for the last spot available in the top four with the Giants, Lightning and Vixens all but assured of finals action.

The Firebirds seized control early and maintained their advantage all the way through to halftime when they held a 30-23 buffer.

Queensland played with great energy and intensity and powered away to a 10-goal lead during the second term.

The home side went further ahead in the third term and held a 43-34 advantage at the last change.

FIZZER: Lightning shine after protest flop

West Coast showed some fight and closed the gap early in the fourth quarter but the Firebirds never looked seriously threatened and secured their fourth win of the 2017 campaign.

Romelda Aiken hit 38 goals from 43 attempts for the Firebirds while Gretel Tippett added 17 goals from 19 attempts.

Kaylia Stanton had 38 goals for the visitors while former Firebird Nat Medhurst hit 12 goals.

The Firebirds took the opportunity to honour ANZAC Day while the players in the second game of the double-header performed their protest against the Netball Australia board vote in the middle of the court.

Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson said the pre-match action achieved the desired result.

“I think it was just a fantastic way to unite all of the players. That’s what it achieved and it was fantastic. We just stood there united,’’ she said.

Simpson said the victory was set-up in the first three terms.

“The (first) three quarters were fantastic … you could feel the flow coming through the court and the connection in defence,’’ she said.

“We’ve been really working on that spark and we’ve really come together in the last two weeks.’’

For wildlife spotters, south Queensland is a little piece of heaven

It was only my third day in Australia but I could already tick kangaroos, turtles, 

“Nemos” (clownfish) and a kaleidoscope of other tropical fish off my wildlife-spotting checklist. But I was here on the search to find bigger creatures. Between April and November, the waters off Australia’s north-eastern coastline form part of the route that humpback whales take to get from Antarctic feeding grounds to warmer waters suitable for giving birth.

One of these islands, just out of sight from the mainland, is really special. Pumpkin Island is a tiny, privately owned hideaway, epitomising chilled-out, barefoot living. It sleeps 34 people in simple-but-spacious, solar-powered, self-catered huts. Bring lunch and fire up the barbecue. 

Life as a “Pumpkineer” moves at a leisurely pace – take a paddleboard, pedalo or snorkel out around the calm sea, then watch the sun set with a cocktail at the bar before falling asleep to the sounds of waves lapping and birds calling. 

Back on the mainland, half a day’s drive south is Bundaberg, an old fishing and sugar town that’s famous for freshly caught seafood, protected turtle-nesting sites and rum. Take a tour of the Bundaberg Distillery, where youcan even mix your own blend, and try to get a table at Indulge, a popular brunch spot.

Visit the waters of Hervey Bay for unrivalled whale watching

From the marina, we took a day trip out to Lady Musgrave Island. If you’re unlucky enough to be setting sail the day after a tropical storm, as we were, you’ll be in for a particularly stomach-churning, two-hour journey, but this will quickly be forgotten once you drop anchor in the coral island’s stunning lagoon. 

Australia’s abundance of marine life is no secret, but looking down though a snorkel mask or a glass-bottomed boat at the Great Barrier Reef’s colourful underwater world will never fail to amaze. Here, while I was snorkelling, three huge green turtles floated gracefully by just metres away from me – a moment that I will never forget.

But it’s Hervey Bay, another two hours’ drive south, where the real whale action happens. From here, you can board a ferry to Fraser Island; it’s full of jungle, sandy beaches and has the sparkling blue Lake McKenzie in the middle.

Everyone here is passionate about whales, and there are plenty of boats lining the harbour ready to take tourists out. The sheltered waters of the bay provide a playground for humpbacks and their calves, and it wasn’t long before we were in luck.

Growing up to 15 metres in length, they’re huge but placid creatures, often inquisitive enough to swim right up to the boats in between playful routines of rolls, tail slaps and giant leaps out of the water. Keep an eye open for Migaloo, the elusive albino whale whose appearance always makes the headlines.

Hopefully, they’re about to become even more protected. Hervey Bay is applying to become one of the world’s first Whale Heritage Sites, which would elevate whale conservation and education to the next level. For a unique trip to the country’s sunshine state, there’s never been a better time to visit.

The non-Broncos battle for Sunshine State bragging rights between the Cowboys and Titans was a cracking game of footy.

As you would expect of teams from God’s Country, there were dramatic momentum swings, great tries, crunching defence and 80 minutes of end-to-end entertainment.

The fightin’ Titans showed a heap of character. Again.

But those clever Cowboys found a way to win with JT leading the charge. Again.

As for the Broncos, it was classic Benny in the lead-up to the Raiders clash with the old dog producing a not-so-new trick to inspire his troops.

The Broncos were under the pump after two straight losses and a midweek fat-shaming drama.

So Wayne went to a tried-and-tested trademark.

He moved to divert attention away from Brisbane’s woes by picking a fight with his great mates in the media and creating a siege mentality.

And dah dah … the Broncos produce a terrific, finals-like effort to outlast Ricky’s Raiders.

The classics never go out of style.

COWBOYS. 32-26 win over Gold Coast

Thrills: Just shut up and give Coen Hess his Origin jumper now. If rugby league doesn’t work out, he can appear in “Rocky XII — The return of Drago’’. He is unstoppable near the line.

Ethan Lowe stood tall as the fill-in forwards leader. They got their attacking mojo back too.

Spills: Have leaked plenty of points in the past fortnight.

Dills: How good would the post-JT future look with Taumalolo, Hess, Gideon Mosby and Kalyn Ponga together for the best part of a decade? Oh, that’s right, Ponga is gone after this season. Utter madness. Looks so at home in that Cowboys no. 1 jersey too.

TITANS. 32-26 loss to North Queensland

Thrills: Amazing that they led 12-10 after having just 39 per cent of possession and conceding six penalties. Defended stoically early. Never quit.

Spills: Failure to get out of first gear in the first 20 minutes is killing them. Dropped ball and silly penalties are at the core of the drama. As gutsy as they are, they are using too much petrol early.

Dills: The referees who didn’t penalise North Queensland’s Michael Morgan for clearly interfering with kick chasers in the second half. The Cowboys scored off the next set of six. A potential 12-point swing. Game over.

BRONCOS. 13-12 win over Canberra.

Thrills: Ben Hunt has bounced back to some really good form based on his dangerous running game and rock-solid defence. His kicking game has flowed on from that. Andrew McCullough’s workrate was outstanding as was Brisbane’s willingness to get into, stay and emerge triumphant in the arm-wrestle.

Tackled like men possessed. Darius Boyd was also very good. Again.

Spills: Should have gone for a field goal earlier but they mucked around and handed the ball back to the Raiders, who quickly scored at the other end. The Broncos are rocks or diamonds when it comes to the field goal caper. Keep inviting teams back into the contest after doing all the hard yards.

Dills: Seriously, it didn’t occur to the Broncos that Jordan Kahu could kick field goals? The fact that he is a very useful goalkicker might have been a clue.
