Flightradar24 said that the Royal Air Force flight carrying the body of the late monarch from Edinburgh, Scotland, to RAF Northolt near London ahead of Monday’s state funeral was tracked by 5 million people across its web and mobile app services.
Final flight of Queen Elizabeth II sets all-time flight tracking record.
Between web, apps, and live stream, 5 million people followed the flight from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt on Flightradar24. https://t.co/sCCrSadVLk pic.twitter.com/sdE9VMyH8f
— Flightradar24 (@flightradar24) September 13, 2022
Flightradar24 revealed that the interest in the flight, which took around 70 minutes, put “unprecedented strain” on its platform, causing issues for some of those watching the progress of the Boeing C17-A Globemaster III aircraft as it made its way to London 32o miles south.
Those following the flight made an astonishing 76.2 million requests on the site, described by Flightradar24 as “any action by a user, like clicking on the flight icon, clicking on the aircraft information in the left side box, or adjusting settings.”
In a post about the record-breaking flight, Flightradar24 said: “We expected a large influx of users, but this immediate, massive spike was beyond what we had anticipated. Approximately 600,000 users were able to successfully follow the flight before performance degraded.
“As the stability of the site suffered, we implemented additional measures to ensure Flightradar24 remained accessible to as many users as possible, and users unable to access the site could continue to follow the flight via livestream [on YouTube].”
It added: “Even though our platform suffered under such heavy load, Queen Elizabeth II’s final flight from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt is by far the all-time most tracked flight on Flightradar24 and will likely remain at the top for a long while.”
Queen Elizabeth II died in Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8 after 70 years on the throne. The passing of the nation’s longest-serving monarch has dominated the headlines in the U.K., and with so much interest linked to related events such as the proclamation of King Charles III and preparations for the Queen’s funeral, it’s perhaps not surprising that so many people were curious about Tuesday’s flight.
Flightradar24’s previous tracking record was set just recently by the aircraft carrying U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei for her controversial trip to Taiwan, with around 2.2 million people visiting Flightradar24 to follow the plane while it was in the air.
Flightradar24 was created in 2006 by two Swedish aviation enthusiasts. The cross-platform service now tracks around 200,000 flights per day and has several million daily users, comprising everyone from serious aviation fanatics to those checking on the flight of a loved one.

Some pilots were sent a mid-flight bulletin announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon.
The note, issued through the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, offered a choice on whether to announce the death of the monarch to crew and passengers on board.
According to an image shared by a British pilot on Twitter, the bulletin read: "ATTN all aircraft. To be read at your discretion it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. Sent 17592/08."
The pilot, who goes by the username Katie Pilot, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in Balmoral Castle on September 8. The news was first announced by the royal family on Twitter, quickly followed by media outlets.
The pilot said who shared the image said she received the news while flying "somewhere over France," adding it was a "somewhat surreal and extremely sad moment."
She said in a Twitter comment that she opted not to announce the Queen's death to the rest of the plane as the flight had on-board WiFi and the news was already making its way around the cabin.
A pilot on a British Airways flight traveling from Miami to London chose to utilize the plane's announcement system to relay the news.
In a video taken by a passenger and reported by E! News, the pilot can be heard telling people mid-flight: "This is an incredibly sad day for all of us on British Airways. Our thoughts are with the entire royal family as we grieve her immeasurable loss."
He can also be heard inviting passengers to hold a moment of silence for the late Queen.

Scotland's busiest airport plans to temporarily close its airspace on Tuesday to ensure Queen Elizabeth II's coffin is transported to London safely.
Although the airport will remain open to passengers during this time, the airspace closure will mean some flights are grounded, delayed, or canceled on Tuesday afternoon, the airport confirmed to local media outlet Edinburgh Live.
Representatives for Edinburgh airport did not immediately respond to Insider's request for confirmation.
Scottish regional airport, Loganair, warned travelers that some flights had been rescheduled.
The company said via a Facebook post: "If you're traveling with us to or from Edinburgh on Tuesday 13 September, some Loganair flights have been re-timed or combined due to closure of the airport during the late afternoon to enable HM The Queen's final journey from Scotland to take place."
The airline also warned passengers traveling to the airport that there will be "several road closures and likely more traffic and congestion than normal."
The late Queen's coffin is currently traveling across the UK before her funeral in London on Monday 19 September.
On Sunday, the Queen's coffin traveled by road to Edinburgh's Palace of Holyrood from Balmoral Castle where she died on Thursday. It was laid to rest overnight in the Palace and will be moved on Monday to lie in St Giles' Cathedral until Tuesday afternoon when it is flown to London, the Mirror reported.
The coffin is due to land at a Royal Air Force base in London at 6:00 p.m. It will then travel by hearse to Westminster Hall, where it will lie in state until the funeral, with the public able to visit the coffin and pay their respects.

“Anger's a potent spice. A pinch wakes you up. Too much dulls your senses.” — Harry Beltik
In times of uncertainty and upheaval — which 2020 certainly was — people tend to gravitate towards that which is comforting. The voice of a loved one, a favourite food, a familiar song, warmth, television.
In 2020, the scripted series that Netflix subscribers turned to the most, with a whopping 62 million views in its first month, was The Queen’s Gambit, according to the streaming service. The tight seven-episode mini-series created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott is an adaptation of a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis and stars the enigmatic and wide-eyed Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy struggling with abandonment, addiction and other demons as she works her way up the ranks. Remarkably, the show bears no opening title sequence – just a simple title stamp during the beginning of each episode.
But in chess, opening moves are everything. It’s a beguiling bit of direction, allowing viewers to focus on Beth – and perhaps enjoy an uninterrupted binge experience – while saving some dazzle for last.
When the title sequence does arrive – a surprising closer capping off the show’s seventh and final episode – it’s a demonstration of skill, a celebration of Beth’s journey and a visual delight. The checkerboard abstractions are the brainchild of title designer Saskia Marka, most well known for her work on Babylon Berlin, which earned the top spot in Art of the Title’s Top 10 Title Sequences of 2018. The hypnotizing patterns used as the basis for the graphics were created by physicist-turned-animator David Whyte (aka Bees and Bombs) using the coding language Processing. The imagery, framed by dark vignetting and doused in dusty particles, is lifted to joyful heights thanks to the elegant, triumphant theme by composer Carlos Rafael Rivera. Watching the swagger of shapes in black and white transform, shift and dance, one can’t help but hear the warm echo of Beth’s last word: сыграем. Let’s play.
A discussion with Title Designer SASKIA MARKA and Animator DAVID WHYTE.
Congratulations on your work this year, Saskia! It’s been a difficult year to get anything done but you managed to work on three titles projects – Deutschland 89, the update to the Babylon Berlin titles and The Queen’s Gambit. How have things changed for you, given the pandemic and everything that’s going on?
SM: Thank you so much! I’m very thankful for the great projects I was still able to work on but it was definitely a challenge during lockdown and throughout the year, working, with the kids running around,…

This has already felt like the longest season in RuPaul’s Drag Race herstory, and Friday’s episode did nothing to change that.
Fresh off the elimination of Olivia Lux, the four remaining queens — Gottmik, Kandy Muse, Rosé and Symone — assembled in the werkroom to brace for their final challenge, immediately theorizing about the surprises still remaining up Ru’s sleeve.
“It could be that one of us goes home, it could be that two of us go home, it could be that none of us go home — we don’t know!” Symone said, though I think we all knew it was going end up being option No. 3. Seriously, did anyone think that only three queens would make it to the finale?
For their final challenge, the queens were tasked with writing, recording and performing their own verse to Mama Ru’s “Lucky,” complete with choreography by Jamal Sims. The end result was a fun, colorful music video that really featured all four girls in their best light. Gottmik delivered a spoken verse that remained inspiring without getting too cheesy, Kandy looked back on her journey “from the hood to Hollywood,” Symone served more attitude than anyone else, and Rosé… can rap? Is that what that was? Honestly, everybody slayed this in their own way, but if I had to pick a winner, it’d be another Symone/Rosé split.
Luck be a lady tonight!

The queens also appeared as guests on RuPaul and Michelle Visage’s new Inside Drag Race segment. (Don’t worry, there were still plenty of Tic-Tacs to not go around.) Rosé insisted that Jan will be more supportive than jealous of her success on the show, Kandy defended herself against haters who feel she hasn’t earned her spot in the Top 4, Gottmik admitted that her drag name may or may not have a porn star connection, and Symone looked back on her own journey of self-acceptance.
There was also some emotional kiki-ing as the queens prepared to hit the main stage one last time. Gottmik said this whole experience has taught her not to feel pressured as a representative of the trans male community. “I’ve learned that the best way to represent your community is just by being you,” she said. “The pressure’s just unnecessary.”
That revelation resonated with Symone, who explained, “I’ve had to unpack a lot of things about myself. I was a very lonely and very shy kid. I didn’t love myself. To come to this competition and to blossom into the Symone that everyone sees… I finally see it. And let me tell you, when you finally get on the other side, it is a beautiful feeling. Nobody can take that from me. I love me, and I can say that. I can say that now.” (BRB, sobbing.)
Now, for the runway: “Drag Excellence!” Mik gott things started in a form-fitting, Cruella de Vil-approved spotted dress; Kandy followed with a “fun, sexy, flirty” little number; Rosé paid tribute to her Scottish heritage in a gown made entirely of tartan; and Symone closed the show in a stunning purple gown with enormous sleeves that screamed “royalty!” in surround sound. The judges, of course, didn’t have a single negative thing to say about any of the queens’ looks. (I thought Symone’s was great, Rosé’s was good, Gottmik’s was fun and Kandy’s was a choice.)

Whose final four eleganza were you gagging over?! #DragRace pic.twitter.com/8gmhkz16ZO

Then came the final gag of the evening: Not only did all four queens have to lip sync for their lives, but they had to do it individually. Thus began a montage of four separate performances to Whitney Houston’s “I Learned From the Best” (HQ2 Radio Remix) — a song I have absolutely, 100-percent heard before. Like the girls’ performances in the music video, what is there to even critique about this? They all went the dramatic route, they were all fully committed, and I wasn’t the least bit surprised when Ru announced that they would all be staying for the finale.

Looks like the next edition of Now That’s What I Call Music is going to be a must-have for TV fans.
In a riff of the popular NOW music franchise, SNL delivered its own version entitled, Now That’s What I Call Theme Songs Sung by Stars, allowing myriad series leads (or facsimile thereof) to perform original lyrics to some of TV’s most classic tracks (watch the full clip below).
The short began with Chloe Fineman giving us her best Nicole Kidman, as she crooned The Undoing‘s opening tune, “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” (“Did you notice my coat?” she asks.) From there we were served new renditions of the songs from Bridgerton (by way of Lady Whistledown aka Julie Andrews), The Mandalorian, The Queen’s Gambit, Succession and more, as Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett, Melissa Villaseñor, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat and all stepped in to exercise their vocal talents.
But in the clip’s final hurrah, first-time host John Krasinski sang the “long-lost lyrics” to The Office‘s theme song, which began with a whole lot of “Scrantons.” He then did Dunder Mifflin proud, singing alongside the actual opening credits, which basically turned into a narration of the accompanying video (“That’s a calculator!”).
That wasn’t the night’s only fun tidbit for Office fans. In Krasinski’s opening monologue, he was consistently interrupted by “Office fans” Kenan Thompson, Moffat, Davidson and Ego Nwodim, who neglected to ask any real questions but rather used it as a chance to repeatedly call the actor “Jim.” The bit culminated in a kiss between “Jim and Pam,” with SNL‘s own Pete Davidson subbing in for Jenna Fischer. (Watch that full monologue here.)
What was your favorite skit from SNL‘s return? Grade the episode in the poll below, then tell us your thoughts in the comments!

He continued: “I for one could not imagine a day when Britain’s Got Talent would be without Simon Cowell.”
Dabbing at his eyes with a tissue, David joked: “These are not tears of sadness, they’re tears of joy.”
Going on to mock the Royal Family, the comedian laughed: “Even the closest members have had to stay away two metres away from.
“Something me and Philip have bee doing since…well, how old is Edward?”
