Eleven more acts returned to the America’s Got Talent stage on Tuesday for another round of (mostly) live performances. But will the voters be as easy to win over as super-soft guest judge Kenan Thompson?

“First of all, thank you all for having me here,” Thompson, the second celeb to step in for an injured Simon Cowell, said atop the two-hour broadcast. “This is incredible. The only thing I can say is just seize the moment. If you have nerves, turn those nerves into superpowers. Go out there and take it!”

Read on for a breakdown of the 11 acts we saw on Tuesday…

KELVIN DUKES | The 14-year-old crooner kicked off the night with a high-energy rendition of “Valerie” that was definitely more Bruno Mars than Amy Winehouse. And that’s not a bad thing! Howie Mandel said he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, and Heidi Klum officially dubbed him one of her favorites. No complaints. Click here to watch.

THE SHAPE | The next time someone tells you that Generation Z has no appreciation for artists of yesteryear, point them in the direction of this charming bunch. Decked out in matching Charlie Chaplin mustaches and canes, these dancing “brothers” dazzled the judges with a routine set to Pitbull’s “Fireball” and Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks.” Actually, make that most of the judges; Mandel opposed his fellow panelists, telling The Shape that they had “no precision.” (I don’t know who’s the bigger monster — Mandel or the cops that wouldn’t let the guys rehearse at their local park during quarantine.) Click here to watch.

KAMERON ROSS | The first single-tear moment of the night came courtesy of Kameron Ross’ tumultuous backstory about coming out to his mom, who is now battling cancer. It was a beautiful story, and I was really rooting for Ross to kill it this week… which is why I was pretty bummed that he didn’t. But it’s up to America, so time will tell whether his nervous Lady Gaga performance gave voters a million reasons to let him go — or just one good one to stay. Click here to watch.

BAD SALSA | This dancing duo took us to Bollywood this week, prompting a very impressed Klum to suggest the act rename itself BAD-ASS Salsa. “Is this a dance act or a danger act?” she asked, to which Vergara added, “Before I die, I need someone to spin me like that!” (Your move, Joe Manganiello.) Mandel even used BAD Salsa’s performance to take another jab at The Shape, telling his fellow judges that BAD Salsa showed the “precision” that The Shape lacked. (Honestly, what happened to Mandel in his childhood that left him so angry at shapes?) Watch:

VINCENT MARCUS | This. Poor. Guy. Marcus’ performance of nursery rhymes-turned-raps was easily one of the cringiest television moments I’ve experienced in recent weeks. I’m not saying he owes a personal apology to each and every one of the rappers he attempted to impersonate, but it might be a nice gesture. Thompson offered mostly positive remarks, but Klum — who had to whisper “He’s doing Eminem” into Mandel’s ear — told it like it was. Click here to watch.

ALEXIS BROWNLEY | I’ll be honest, I kind of wish AGT hadn’t shown us the pre-recorded bit with Brownley’s dogs talking before this week’s performance. I mean, now that we know they can talk, is it really that impressive to watch them jump over a few hurdles? That said, I do agree with Mandel’s assessment that “this is better than pigs.” Click here to watch.

BONAVEGA | In the immortal words of Monty Python, “and now for something completely different.” This self-proclaimed “rock ‘n’ roll crazy person” gave us an extremely necessary mid-show energy boost with an ’80s-tastic performance of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” The vocals were pretty solid, but what the judges really enjoyed was BONAVEGA’s aerobics-inspired outfit — even if Vergara preferred the J.Lo-inspired number he rocked during his initial audition. (“It was better for your body type!”) Click here to watch.

SPYROS BROTHERS | For two guys who excel in something called “the diablo,” these bonded brothers really do present themselves like little angels. Am I a diablo person? I wouldn’t say so. Much like Vergara, I feel like “it brings me fear.” But at least Mandel, who once again threw the word “precision” into the mix, had their back. Click here to watch.

DANELIYA TULESHOVA | I definitely appreciated Tuleshova’s slightly softer, more emotional take on Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” even more so when I was reminded that the songstress is only 14 years old. It was hardly surprising to see her nab one of the few standing ovations of the night. Watch:

JONATHAN GOODWIN | The minute this certified lunatic appeared on my screen, I felt like I was watching an entirely different show. Kind of like Fear Factor, only with someone a million times more charming than Joe Rogan. (I especially enjoyed Goodwin’s off-the-cuff joke about Mandel’s dangerous bedroom activities, mostly because of how visibly uncomfortable it made him.) As I was saying, this certified lunatic doused himself in fuel before attempting to break himself free from a trap before he burned alive. It was… stressful. Klum put it best: “You’re completely insane, but I kind of liked it.” Click here to watch.

VOICES OF OUR CITY CHOIR | This inspiring San Diego-based group blessed us with another powerful performance, this time taking on the timeless classic “Stand By Me.” The harmonies were tight, the emotions were palpable, and that spoken-word moment was an especially nice touch. “I don’t know if you get a kick out of making people cry their eyes out, but that’s what happens every time you step onto the screen,” Thompson told them. (The SNL actor also earned points for knowing what the choir sang for its first audition. A guest judge who actually watches the show? Revolutionary!) Click here to watch.

So, which five of these acts should move on to the semifinals? And how’d Thompson as a fill-in for Cowell? Vote in our polls below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts.

Tenacious Swiss upset top-ranked Sweden in quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/tenacious-swiss-upset-top-ranked-sweden-in-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/tenacious-swiss-upset-top-ranked-sweden-in-quarter-finals/#respond Thu, 03 Jan 2019 02:16:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tenacious-swiss-upset-top-ranked-sweden-in-quarter-finals/

Switzerland is brimming with confidence at the world junior hockey championship after defeating top-ranked Sweden 2-0 Wednesday in a quarter-final upset.

Swiss netminder Luca Hollenstein shut out the Swedes, who peppered the goalie with 41 shots throughout the game.

"To us it's very big," said Swiss forward Luca Wyss, who scored the second goal of the game. "Everyone around talked that Sweden is going to beat us. We as a team had in our heads we can play against Sweden."

Swiss goals from Yannick Bruschweiler and Wyss advanced Switzerland to the tournament semifinals in Vancouver.

Wyss, who scored at 13:59 of the second period, put the puck between Swedish goalie Samuel Ersson's legs during a goal-mouth scramble.

"I had a shot before from the slot and I went to the goal and the puck came out and I just put it on the net and it ended up in the net," he said.

The best previous result for the Swiss in the tournament was a bronze medal in 1998.

Switzerland's coach Christian Wohlwend said his team needs to play the way it competed against Sweden every game.

"The confidence is huge," he said. "The team belief is huge. We're just riding on the wave now."

Hollenstein made several key saves throughout the game, including stopping forward Filip Sveningsson on a breakaway. Sweden outshot the Swiss 41-35.

The Swiss players mobbed their goalie at the end of the game.

Sweden's coach Tomas Monten said the Swiss were able to take away his team's puck moving offence.

"It's hockey," he said. "They played a really good game. We lost our tempo with the puck."

Monten said his team was stricken with a bad flu during the tournament that kept many of his players in bed between games. Sweden did not dress five players due to sickness on the team's New Year's Eve game against Kazakhstan.

"I don't want to take anything from the Swiss," said Monten. "They were great. As I said in the locker room now, 'step up and take it. This is the way it is.' "

The Swiss opened the scoring on a wrist shot by Bruschweiler from deep in the slot that beat Sweden's netminder Samuel Ersson on the glove side.

Shots on goal in the first period were almost even — Sweden with 13 and Switzerland with 12 shots — but the Swiss had several point-blank scoring opportunities.

Bruschweiler, who lost his stick during a second period Swedish power play, managed to block two shots while sprawled on the ice.

Wyss scored Switzerland's second goal at 13:59 of the second period, putting the puck between Ersson's legs during a goal-mouth scramble. The Swiss were out-shooting Sweden 26-22 at the end of the second period.

Sweden entered the quarterfinals undefeated with wins over Finland, United States, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. The Swedes, last year's silver medallists, boast a record of 47 straight victories in round-robin play.

The Swiss beat Denmark in round-robin play, but suffered losses to Canada, Russia and an overtime defeat to the Czech Republic.

Goal, assist, dive: Neymar 'hat trick' sends Brazil to World Cup quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/#respond Tue, 03 Jul 2018 06:39:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/ Flaunting his flair and his finishing touch wasn't enough. Neymar put his theatrics on show, too.

What became clear in Brazil's 2-0 victory over Mexico on Monday is that the wild side of the striker's character is going nowhere at this year's World Cup. And neither is Brazil.

"I don't much care for criticism," Neymar said, "not even for praise."

Neymar led Brazil to a 2-0 victory over Mexico, while Nacer Chadli scored in the 94th minute to cap a 3-2 Belgium comeback over Japan. 1:43

With a goal and an assist, Neymar propelled Brazil into the quarter-finals of a tournament it has won five times. He also extended his platform to show the world he is as good — or better — than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Although Neymar has scored only two goals in four games in Russia, he did enter the World Cup after spending three months recovering from a broken right foot. And it was the right foot that helped to break through Mexico's stern resistance in Samara.

After releasing Willian with a back-heel, Neymar raced into the penalty area and slid to tap his teammate's return cross into the net.

While his scoring is so often the focus, Neymar also creates goals for his teammates. A toe-poked attempt to beat Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 88th minute was diverted into the path of Robert Firmino, who scored with a tap-in just like Neymar did. The world's most expensive player has 11 goals and nine assists in his last 19 games for Brazil.

But before setting up the second goal it looked like Neymar's game — or even his World Cup — could be over with 20 minutes to go. It turned out to be pure histrionics. Writhing in agony after his right ankle was stepped on by Miguel Layun, Neymar managed to get back on his feet. But not before trying to step on Layun.

Both escaped punishment, but the judgment elsewhere was less forgiving, with Neymar asked after the match if he was a diva trying to draw fouls.

"I think it's more an attempt to undermine me than anything else," Neymar responded.

The five-time World Cup champions will next face either Japan or Belgium in the quarterfinals. Brazil has reached that stage at every World Cup since 1994.

Mexico has now lost in the round of 16 at every tournament over the same period of time, extending its wait for the "quinto partido" — or fifth game — for at least another four years. The last time Mexico reached the quarterfinals was when the country hosted the tournament in 1986.

This year's World Cup had started so promisingly for Mexico. The team opened with a win over Germany, setting the defending champions on the path to an early exit. They caused problems for Brazil, too, initially.

But they couldn't find a way to stop Neymar.

"He's very agile. He's very fast," Brazil coach Tite said. "Is it wrong to feign, to provoke the players in the last third? It's not a sin."

Canadian women's rugby team advances to Paris 7s quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/canadian-womens-rugby-team-advances-to-paris-7s-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-womens-rugby-team-advances-to-paris-7s-quarter-finals/#respond Fri, 08 Jun 2018 21:15:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-womens-rugby-team-advances-to-paris-7s-quarter-finals/

Canada's women's team advanced to the quarter-finals at the World Rugby Women's Seven Series in Paris after a solid showing in the round robin Friday in Paris.

They'll play the United States on Saturday at 10:08 a.m. ET.

Canada, which finished 2-1, began the tournament with a renewed sense of purpose after some struggles during the last two tournaments, winning its first two games in convincing fashion over Russia and Fiji.

Canada followed those wins up with a tough 31-14 loss at the hands of first-placed Australia. Charity Williams and Sara Kaljuvee scored tries for Canada.

Earlier in the day, the Canadians looked electric in a 31-5 thrashing of Russia. Ghislaine Landry scored two tries, while Britt Benn, Caroline Crossley and Kayla Molschi also scored.

Shortly after. in the second game, Canada surrendered the first score to Fiji but scored three straight tries en route to a 21-7 win.

Bianca Farella scored two of Canada's tries, and Breanne Nicholas added another.

Podium slipping away

Since the inception of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series in 2012, the Canadian women's team has never finished below third place in the overall standings.

But after disappointing fifth and 11th place finishes earlier this year in Langford, B.C., and Kitakyushu, Japan, respectively, the Canadians find themselves in fourth place entering the final tournament in Paris.

With 44 points, Canada trails Australia (74), New Zealand (70) and France (54) for podium contention.

It's an unfamiliar situation for what has undeniably been the country's most successful rugby team, with accolades that include a bronze medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics and frequent appearances on World Series podiums.

"It's been a bit of a roller-coaster this year with the group," said Britt Benn before the tournament, who returns to the squad after missing the previous tournament in Langford due to injury.

"We're not changing how we play, we're just making some adjustments here and there."

Elimination time

The Canadians' next test will be the United States as they look to stay alive in the tournament.

The Americans also finished 2-1, beating Japan and Spain before losing to host France in their final game.

For Benn, this season has been about "getting comfortable with the uncomfortable" in a sport with a razor-thin margin for error.

"When we dipped below top three, I think that was a big challenge," the 29-year-old from Napanee, Ont., said. "We just have to tighten up our game a little bit and make sure that we don't make those defensive errors or offensive errors."

Should host France finish fifth or better this weekend, the Canadians would fall short of that proverbial podium. Even a tournament win wouldn't guarantee a spot in the top three for the squad.

Regardless, the round robin was a confidence builder for the squad, who will need to have an exceptional quarter-final game if they want to avoid falling off the podium for the first-time ever.

Federer was pushed to advantage in the opening game of the match but after navigating his way through, he broke Paire in the next game with a forehand and raced in a 3-1 lead.

The 36-year-old then earned a double break with stunning cross court forehand winner off Paire’s wide serve.

Serving for the set, Federer brought up two set points but was guilty of uncharacteristic errors.

However he wasn’t denied much longer as Paire went long to lose the first set in just 23 minutes.

In the second set, Paire kept up with Federer until the seventh game when he went 0-40 down.

And another poor shot from the Frenchman gave Federer the break.

US Open 2017 LIVE updates: Build up to Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-live-updates-build-up-to-roger-federer-and-rafa-nadal-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-live-updates-build-up-to-roger-federer-and-rafa-nadal-quarter-finals/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 09:07:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-live-updates-build-up-to-roger-federer-and-rafa-nadal-quarter-finals/

Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal play later today and will meet in the semi-finals if both progress.

Overnight Venus Williams secured her place in the women’s semi-finals and faces fellow American Sloane Stephens in the last four.

Kevin Anderson spoiled the American party in the men’s draw though by beating Sam Query 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

The 17th-seeded Querrey can blame himself for a meltdown in the first set tiebreak, where he lost five points in a row to allow Anderson into the lead under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 31-year-old Anderson, seeded 28th, will face Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta for a spot in Sunday’s final.

US Open 2017 live updates: Follow all the latest news from Flushing Meadows

09.45: Venus Williams has credited Serena Williams with carrying the American flag.

The US Open could see all four semi-final slots go to Americans this year.

Venus Williams takes on Sloane Stephens after both coming through quarter-finals yesterday.

And Maddison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe are in action today and could make it a clean sweep.

And Venus was quick to praise her sister who is out of action after giving birth over the weekend.

“I think we have to give some credit to Serena,” Venus said.

“There was a time in tennis when all my rivals were American.

“So I love seeing these young American’s coming up and playing big and focussed and I would love that again.

“The top four, top five in the world all playing each other in semi-finals – that would be huge. I would love that.”

09.30: Juan Martin del Potro is excited to come up against Roger Federer again.

Del Potro beat Federer in the US Open eight years ago but knows the 19-time Grand Slam winner is back towards the top of his game.

“It’s always a pleasure to play the greatest guy in history,” Del Potro said.

“I admire him, too. Everybody loves him. It’s going to be an interesting match to play.”

09.05: Kevin Anderson believes he was able to reset his game during the intense second set tie-breaker against local favourite Sam Querrey which eventually helped him prevail in the four-set thriller in the U.S. Open quarter-final on Tuesday.

The 28th seed, who had taken the first set also in a tiebreak, benefited from his opponent’s meltdown to set up a set point at 8-7 after falling 6-1 down, but Querrey saved it and eventually levelled the tie.

“You know, those matches are tough. I feel like I just try to play each point as best as I can,” Anderson said.

“I felt in the second set, after being 6-1 down and the next minute it’s 6-All, obviously a very tough point to lose that 6-All point. I don’t want to play too many points like that.

“But I feel like that’s where I was able to really reset. It’s almost tougher, it would have been better off losing that tiebreak almost 7-1 than coming so close to actually being two sets to love up.

“I felt I did a fantastic job resetting. These matches, it just comes to a point here and there. Fortunately, I was able to win a couple more points than him tonight.”

08.40: Sam Querrey insists he’s happy to have reached the quarter-finals despite defeat to Kevin Anderson last night.

Anderson beat the last home hope in the men’s draw leaving Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens in the women’s draw.

But Querrey still thinks he had a good tournament.

(I’m) pretty happy,” Querrey said. “At the beginning of the week, if you said I would have made quarters, I probably would have signed up for that.

“I know that bottom half of the draw was open, but you can’t say 63 guys blew an opportunity. Only one guy can go through, and Kevin’s pretty tough.”

8.15: Martin Del Potro has had a sickness scare ahead of his quarter-final with Roger Federer.

The Argentine admits he hasn’t been feeling well this week but hopes to be in a better condition for tonight’s game.

He said: “Hopefully my day off [Tuesday] I can recovery a little bit more.

“Then I will see if I’m ready to play in good conditions against Roger.”

7.45: Kevin Anderson spoiled the American party in the men’s draw though by beating Sam Query 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

Anderson’s win ended the U.S. presence in the men’s draw while Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams have both qualified for the last four in the women’s draw.

7.35: Venus Williams stayed on course for her third US Open title by beating Petra Kvitova overnight.

Williams faces fellow American Sloane Stephens in the last four.

The Australian won the first set 6-2, which left the Spaniard and the crowd shocked.

But despite Nadal kicking into gear in the second set, he was unable to stop Kyrgios who claimed it at 7-5.

Nadal came into this match knowing that he would be crowned the new world number one when the ATP rankings are updated next Monday.

But he was no match for Kyrgios, who rattled off winner after winner to secure his place in the semi-finals.

He will now face David Ferrer after he beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-3.

The Austrian was no match for the Spanish veteran, who broke serve four times.

Despite Nadal’s defeat to Kyrgios he can go home happy knowing that he will reclaim the world number one spot for the first time since 2008.

This will be the fourth time in his career he has reached the milestone.

The other semi-final will be contested between John Isner and Grigor Dimitrov on centre court at 7pm tonight.

Raonic overwhelmed by Federer in Wimbledon quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/raonic-overwhelmed-by-federer-in-wimbledon-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/raonic-overwhelmed-by-federer-in-wimbledon-quarter-finals/#respond Wed, 12 Jul 2017 23:11:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/raonic-overwhelmed-by-federer-in-wimbledon-quarter-finals/

In a Wimbledon rematch, Milos Raonic proved to be no match for Roger Federer.

The third-seeded Swiss great, trying for a record eighth Wimbledon title, systematically dismantled Raonic in quarter-final action at the All England Club on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory.

Raonic, the tournament’s sixth seed from Thornhill, Ont., defeated Federer in the Wimbledon semifinals last year before losing to Andy Murray in the final.

Perhaps that defeat lingered in Federer’s mind, because he looked like a man on a mission Wednesday, flummoxing Raonic with his service game while showing no fear of the Canadian’s cannon arm.

Raonic had five break point opportunities — four of them coming in one game in the third set — but Federer saved them all.

Raonic looked better in the third set, holding serve and taking it to a tiebreak. But Federer set up match point with an ace, then won when Raonic hit a return wide.

Federer, who has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon, improved to 254-2 when winning the first two sets of a match.

Sam Querrey stuns Andy Murray

Limping between points and fading down the stretch, defending champion Andy Murray was stunned by 24th-seed Sam Querrey of the U.S. 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1 in the Wimbledon quarter-finals Wednesday.

The No. 1-seeded Murray came into the tournament dealing with a sore left hip and it clearly impeded him at Centre Court. He grimaced as he stumbled or landed awkwardly while attempting shots.

Querrey took full advantage to reach the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career — and the first for any American man anywhere since Andy Roddick was the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2009.

“I am still in a little bit of shock myself,” Querrey said.

Djokovic retires

There was another quarter-final surprise later Wednesday, when three-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic stopped playing because of a right arm injury while trailing 2010 runner-up Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (2), 2-0. After dropping the opening set, Djokovic took a medical timeout while a trainer massaged his arm. A day earlier, during his fourth-round match, Djokovic had his right shoulder worked on by a trainer.

In Friday’s semifinals, Querrey will face 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic of Croatia, who also won a five-setter Wednesday, getting past 16th-seeded Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 with the help of 33 aces. On the other half of the draw, Berdych will face Federer next.

Murray is normally a terrific returner, but Querrey hit 27 aces, including on six of the last nine points he served to finish with a flourish. Querrey was impeccable for portions of the match, finishing with 70 winners and only 30 unforced errors.

“He was dictating all of the points,” Murray said.

From 1-1 in the fourth, Querrey grabbed eight games in a row to take that set and lead 3-0 in the last.

“I didn’t start my best, but I just kept with it. Kept swinging away and then really found a groove in the fourth and fifth set,” Querrey said. “And everything kind of seemed to be falling my way then.”

It is the second year in a row that the 29-year-old Californian upset the defending champion and top-seeded man at the All England Club. In 2016, he beat Djokovic in the third round en route to the only major quarter-final of Querrey’s career before Wednesday.

That snapped Djokovic’s 30-match winning streak at the majors. Murray didn’t have that sort of recent dominance, but he is a three-time major champion and had been to at least the semifinals at the All England Club in seven of the past eight years.

The hip, though, was a problem. Murray had to skip some practice sessions and pull out of a couple of planned exhibition matches in the leadup to Wimbledon. Even though he kept insisting once the tournament began that he was OK, he was not nearly capable of his best on this afternoon.

Murray’s serve speeds slowed, and his backhand, in particular, didn’t have its usual verve, either. One key to his success is his court coverage, which allows him to play defence as well as anyone. That was not the case in the latter stages against Querrey.

“I was pretty close today. It wasn’t like I was, like, a million miles away from winning the match,” Murray said. “Obviously the end was a bit of a struggle.”

Querrey is the lowest-ranked player to ever beat two-time Wimbledon champion Murray in his 12 appearances at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.

For Murray, this was the fourth five-set match he’s lost in a row. Querrey is headed in the opposite direction: Merely 4-10 in fifth sets for his career until last week, he has won each of his last three matches by going the distance: against 12th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round, Kevin Anderson in the fourth, and now Murray.

Querrey always has had an intimidating serve, but he’s never managed to put together his overall game for enough matches to play on the final weekend at a major.

Indeed, until last year’s win over Djokovic, he might have been best known for some of his unusual off-court episodes. In Thailand for a 2009 tournament, he cut two muscles in his right arm when he sat on a glass table that shattered. Two years ago, he appeared on the reality TV show “The Millionaire Matchmaker.” There’s a popular video clip on social media of Querrey — sunglasses and hat on, shirt unbuttoned — dancing with friends wearing horse-head masks.

Now Querrey’s on-court accomplishment Wednesday made headlines. Win two more matches, and he’ll be the Wimbledon champion.

Canada’s Dabrowski moves on

Canadian Gabrielle Dabrowski advanced to tomorrow’s mixed doubles quarter-final with teammate Rohan Bopanna of India.

The 10th-seeded pair defeated the Croatian duo of Nikola Mektic and Ana Konjuh 7-6 (5), 6-2 to move on to the final-eight stage.

Canada’s Milos Raonic is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after posting a 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

Raonic, seeded sixth at the All England Club, struggled against the 10th seeded German early on and looked to be in trouble after falling behind two sets to one.

But a break to win the fourth set seemed to invigorate the Canadian, who steamrolled to victory with a dominant fifth set.

He served to love in the deciding game, converting his first match point with his 23rd ace.

Raonic, a finalist last year at Wimbledon, will face Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.

Federer, the third-ranked Swiss star, is looking to win a championship at Wimbledon for a record eighth time.

Nadal upset after epic 15-13 5th set

Rafael Nadal was beaten in the fourth round at Wimbledon, losing to Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 15-13.

The two-time champion at the All England Club saved two match points in the 10th game of the fifth set, and two more in the 20th game.

“When you are in the fifth, against a player like him, (the outcome) just depends on a few balls,” Nadal said, shaking his head. “Actually, he was a little better than me on a few balls.”

Nadal dropped the opening set despite not making an unforced error, ending his Grand Slam set winning streak.

Nadal had won 28 consecutive completed sets at major tournaments, equaling his personal best. Only two men have had longer such runs: Roger Federer won 36 Grand Slam sets in a row in 2006-07, and John McEnroe had a 35-set run in 1984.

The last set lost by Nadal at a major was the fifth in the Australian Open final in January against Federer. After that, Nadal won his 10th French Open title without conceding a set, then won his first three matches at Wimbledon in straight sets.

“It’s tough to say what, exactly, made the difference at the end,” Muller said. “To be honest, I haven’t really realized what just happened.”

No issues for Murray

Andy Murray is in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the 10th straight year.

The defending champion beat Benoit Paire 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-4 on centre court.

Murray has won two titles at the All England Club. In his previous nine quarter-final matches, Murray is 7-2.

“I’ve done a good job so far here,” said Murray. “Today was by far the best I hit the ball, the cleanest I hit the ball. I was happy about that.”

The top-ranked Murray will next face Sam Querrey.

Kerber falls

Garbine Muguruza eliminated Angelique Kerber from the Wimbledon tournament Monday, a result that means the German will lose her No. 1 ranking.

Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, beat Kerber 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round on No. 2 Court.

With the loss to Kerber, either Simona Halep or Karolina Pliskova will take over as the top-ranked player after the tournament.

Muguruza, a Wimbledon finalist in 2015, will next face two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarter-finals.

Federer makes history

Playing on centre court again, Roger Federer won.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion advanced to the quarter-finals for the 15th time by beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

“I didn’t expect it go to that easy,” said Federer, the Australian Open champion. “It wasn’t as easy maybe as it looks like.”

Federer has won 18 Grand Slam titles. One more at Wimbledon will give him a record eighth championship at the All England Club, breaking a tie with Pete Sampras.

Venus through to quarters

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams returned to the quarter-finals at the All England Club with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 19-year-old Ana Konjuh of Croatia.

The 37-year-old Williams made her Grand Slam debut at the 1997 French Open, seven months before Konjuh was born.

“Winning never gets old at any stage in your career, ever, ever,” Williams said.

Williams served pretty much impeccably, hitting seven aces and winning 31 of 36 first-serve points.

This was Williams’ first match since police in Florida rescinded their original conclusion that she was at fault in a two-car crash last month. A passenger in the other vehicle died about two weeks later. Police said Friday that video showed Williams legally entered the intersection and now no blame has been determined in the accident.

Nestor moves on in mixed doubles

In mixed doubles second-round action, Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Slovenian partner Andreja Klepac defeated India’s Purav Raja and Japan’s Eri Hozumi 6-2, 7-5. The 11th-seeded Nestor and Klepac next meet American Nicole Melichar and Germany’s Andre Begemann.
