James Cleverly MP grew frustrated during his interview on BBC Breakfast this morning. He spoke to Charlie Stayt about the latest measures the government have announced in a bid to help curb the spread of coronavirus from hotspots abroad. When Stayt quizzed the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa on potential new coronavirus hotspots, Cleverly hit back, claiming the presenter didn’t give him the opportunity to provide a full answer.

“Do you know where the next strain is coming from?” Stayt asked.

“No,” Cleverly replied before being interrupted and spoken over by the BBC Breakfast presenter.

“The reason I asked that question is because you don’t know when the next strain is coming from, it’s impossible to know so why don’t we shut the borders to all countries?” Stayt asked.

Hitting back, the minister said: “You’re trying to clip up a radio moment but if you let me answer in full you’ll understand why our policy is very effective.”

Rachel Maddow to Miss Election Coverage, Will Quarantine After Close Contact Tests Positive for COVID-19 https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/ https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/#respond Sat, 07 Nov 2020 00:51:09 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rachel-maddow-to-miss-election-coverage-will-quarantine-after-close-contact-tests-positive-for-covid-19/

One of MSNBC’s biggest stars is being forced to sit out the cable news network’s continuing election coverage.

Rachel Maddow will be off the air indefinitely and in quarantine at home after a close contact tested positive for the coronavirus, the host announced on Friday. “I’ve tested negative thus far, but will be at home quarantining ’til it’s safe for me to be back at work without putting anyone at risk,” Maddow said in a tweet. She will miss at least Friday’s edition of her primetime MSNBC show, which airs weekdays at 9/8c and is among the top-rated news programs on cable. It’s not yet known when she might return to on-air duty.

This has happened, of course, at an inconvenient time, as the 2020 presidential election is still undecided after three days of vote counting. Cable news ratings have soared as viewers tune in to see the latest vote counts from still-undecided states like Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada. (Democratic challenger Joe Biden leads at press time with 253 electoral votes, to President Donald Trump’s 214.)

MSNBC anchors Nicolle Wallace, Joy Reid and Brian Williams, along with breakout analyst Steve Kornacki, will pick up the slack in Maddow’s absence. “Wishing everyone patience and calm; may these remarkable times bring out the best in us,” Maddow concluded, before adding: “See you soon!”

Connecting EPs Tease the ‘Catharsis’ of NBC’s Upcoming Quarantine Comedy https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/ https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/#respond Tue, 06 Oct 2020 22:16:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/

Finding the comedy in any collective tragedy is a daunting task for entertainers. But bringing levity to an ongoing global pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 U.S. lives and kept Americans in quarantine for six months and counting?

Well, that was a Barnum and Bailey-level tightrope walk for the producers of NBC’s Connecting — but it was also a challenge they were eager to face.

“The way many of us deal with uncomfortable and painful situations is with humor,” executive producer Martin Gero (who’s coming off the recently concluded Blindspot) tells TVLine. “That duality of comedy and pain is inside us in a pretty ingrained way already. It was just about finding that balance and making sure the show never got too dark, but also never got too light.”

Connecting — premiering Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8/7c — follows a group of friends who, like many in 2020, have been forced to spend time together remotely as the coronavirus sends America into lockdown. The season opens on March 29, just a few days into those strict stay-at-home orders, and will eventually reach November’s election, with each episode jumping forward in time by a few weeks.

But even though the pandemic is still wreaking havoc around the world, Gero and executive producer Brendan Gall say they didn’t second-guess making a TV show that so closely reflects real life. (Other events that have unfolded during quarantine, including a wave of Black Lives Matter activism, are covered on the show, too.)

“We were definitely conscious that there was a version of this that would feel tone-deaf and wrong, and it was our goal to not do that version,” Gero explains. “But we also need stuff that speaks to the moment we’re in, and people want to feel seen and have those stories resonate. What we’re going through is a lot, and we could use some place to have catharsis. That’s what comedy does so well.”

Adds Gall, “We have these genres of storytelling — drama and comedy and crime and blah blah blah — and that’s not how any of us walk through the world. We don’t get to exist in just one single genre in our lives. That’s what we were embracing.”

Striking the proper tone on Connecting has been just one of many obstacles for the EPs, who are also navigating the unprecedented process of filming a TV show with little human contact. Each actor received a filmmaking kit, which included an iPhone 11 (on which most Connecting scenes are shot), sound equipment and lighting equipment; the crew remotely guides the actors through their own hair and makeup, production design and just about everything else needed to get the shot.

“It’s the closest thing to theater that I’ve done in television” Gero reveals. “It feels like such a communal experience of ‘We’re all in this together,’ and it’s been incredibly powerful to work on at a time when people are feeling so isolated.”

Outside of their partnership on Connecting, Gero and Gall have been friends for 20 years, and their standing Sunday-night Zoom dinners with other close pals during quarantine were the inspiration for the show. That sense of community — and commiseration, perhaps — are what the producers hope to convey, per Gall, in spite of the year’s harrowing events.

“It’s a common knee-jerk response when people say, ‘I don’t know if I want to watch a show about what we’re going through right now,’” Gall admits. “But the second response, that seems to come almost universally, is that once you start to talk about the show and see the show, people really get pulled into it… This show lets you in on this ongoing, evolving conversation about what we’re all going through, which we all need right now.”

Charlotte Hawkins went on to say: “At one point the government were saying to go back to normal, people will have saved up hard, booked these holidays, gone out there to France and find themselves in a situation through no fault of their own and then the government says ‘If you don’t get back before four o’clock tomorrow morning you’re going to have to self-isolate’.

“You don’t think there should be any compensation from the government to make up for that?”

“I think the government should monitor it better and make people more aware when this quarantine is going to come in,” the guest replied.

“But at the end of the day, we’re governed by the virus situation and we just have to accept, if you go abroad they can bring it in on any country.

Friday TV Ratings: CBS’ Quarantine Haircut Show Draws Little Buzz https://briefnews.eu/friday-tv-ratings-cbs-quarantine-haircut-show-draws-little-buzz/ https://briefnews.eu/friday-tv-ratings-cbs-quarantine-haircut-show-draws-little-buzz/#respond Sun, 31 May 2020 01:53:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/friday-tv-ratings-cbs-quarantine-haircut-show-draws-little-buzz/

In the latest TV ratings, CBS’ Haircut Night in America — in which stylists walked celebs (and viewers) through the perfect DIY haircut — came out a bit short on the sides, delivering just a 0.4 demo rating to go with a total audience of 3.4 million viewers.

This week’s Blue Bloods rerun, meanwhile, copped Friday’s largest audience, with 3.93 million viewers.

Fox’s Friday Night SmackDown (2.15 mil/0.6) ticked up from last week to tie ABC’s Shark Tank rerun (3.9 mil/0.6) for the nightly demo win.

Elsewhere, The CW’s Masters of Illusion (835K/0.1) was steady.

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our daily-ish ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increases in delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms. These Live+Same Day numbers instead are used to illustrate any trends or high/low superlatives. Happy Fun Ball may stick to certain types of skin.

CBS to Offer Quarantine Style Advice With Haircut Night in America Special https://briefnews.eu/cbs-to-offer-quarantine-style-advice-with-haircut-night-in-america-special/ https://briefnews.eu/cbs-to-offer-quarantine-style-advice-with-haircut-night-in-america-special/#respond Thu, 21 May 2020 17:04:16 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/cbs-to-offer-quarantine-style-advice-with-haircut-night-in-america-special/

Before you take a pair of scissors to your quarantine mane, you might want to get some guidance from the professionals — and CBS can help with that.

The network on Thursday announced Haircut Night in America, a one-hour special in which top hair stylists will walk celebrities — and viewers — through the perfect DIY haircut, color and style from their homes.

Married actors Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan) and Rebecca Romijn (Star Trek: Discovery) will host the special, which will feature TV personality Kelly Osbourne, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and NHL player P.K. Subban, as well as frontline health care workers, as they attempt to change up their quarantine ‘dos.

“With the majority of salons and barbershops still closed while America shelters in place, many increasingly hirsute people are missing their regularly scheduled salon appointments, and now more than ever need expert advice on how to rein in their unruly manes,” the special’s official logline reads. “After nearly three months of social distancing, the time has come for people to take haircare into their own hands. In Haircut Night in America, top stylists will expertly guide celebrities in a “cut-a-long” from their homes and reveal the final looks, no matter the outcome. They’ll also weave in tips and tricks for viewers to achieve the best at-home coifs, turning DIY hair-DON’Ts into hair-DOs!”

“We’re all in this together, and we’re all starting to look a little shaggy,” said executive producer Tom Forman. “So grab your scissors and join us for a night of makeovers, stars, laughs, tips and celebrity home haircuts overseen by the best stylists in the world.”

Haircut Night in America, which was produced remotely, airs Friday, May 29 at 8/7c on CBS. Will you be watching?

Frozen’s Olaf and SNL Cast Encourage Parents to ‘Let Kids Drink’ in Rousing Quarantine Anthem — Watch Video https://briefnews.eu/frozens-olaf-and-snl-cast-encourage-parents-to-let-kids-drink-in-rousing-quarantine-anthem-watch-video/ https://briefnews.eu/frozens-olaf-and-snl-cast-encourage-parents-to-let-kids-drink-in-rousing-quarantine-anthem-watch-video/#respond Sun, 10 May 2020 13:49:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/frozens-olaf-and-snl-cast-encourage-parents-to-let-kids-drink-in-rousing-quarantine-anthem-watch-video/

The cast of Saturday Night Live knows just how hard it can be to parent your children while holed up in quarantine. That’s why they’ve proposed a new rule: “Let kids drink!”

That was the premise of a song performed by most of the cast during this weekend’s Season 45 finale. The music video also included a surprise cameo by Frozen star Josh Gad, who voices Olaf in the popular Disney film franchise.

“Give kids drinks,” he pleaded. “Disney said it’s fine. And now here’s a bedtime story: it’s vodka, soda, lime.”

Gad’s solo was followed by a Pete Davidson verse, in which the twentysomething cast member begged his mother to let him have “a drink and a shot… and a little pills and crack.”

The number eventually dovetailed into an anthem about letting dogs got wasted. Cecily Strong led the charge, likening canines to “smarter, nicer kids.” At one point, she was interrupted by a very depressed Beck Bennett, who chimed in with a verse of his own about letting guys drink alone in their sheds.

This weekend marked the third remote installment of SNL since the coronavirus pandemic forced the late-night sketch comedy series to halt production. In addition to Gad, the episode featured cameos by Alec Baldwin, SNL alums Kristen Wiig and Tina Fey, Martin Short, ubiquitous guest star Danny Trejo and a musical performance by Boyz II Men and Babyface.

Late Night Easter Parade Floats Celebrate Unworn Bras and Other Quarantine Comforts — Watch https://briefnews.eu/late-night-easter-parade-floats-celebrate-unworn-bras-and-other-quarantine-comforts-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/late-night-easter-parade-floats-celebrate-unworn-bras-and-other-quarantine-comforts-watch/#respond Tue, 14 Apr 2020 14:15:36 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/late-night-easter-parade-floats-celebrate-unworn-bras-and-other-quarantine-comforts-watch/

We do love a parade, and NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers hosted one best it could, given the confines of the pandemic quarantine.

On Monday’s edition of the late-night NBC series, writer Amber Ruffin presided over an Easter Parade that was held within her own home. Because of the strange times we live in, each of the slapdash parade floats celebrated a certain and all-too-relatable aspect of quarantine life — including jeans that seem like such a fancy bother to shimmy into anymore, homemade cookies that barely hit the plate before being inhaled during a fit of despair, and of course a Zoom meeting with coworkers.

Press play above, grab a seat, and take in Ruffin’s stay-at-homemade festivities. Which float do you identity with most?

Good Doctor Winter Premiere Recap: Did Lim Survive the Quarantine? https://briefnews.eu/good-doctor-winter-premiere-recap-did-lim-survive-the-quarantine/ https://briefnews.eu/good-doctor-winter-premiere-recap-did-lim-survive-the-quarantine/#respond Tue, 15 Jan 2019 07:00:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/good-doctor-winter-premiere-recap-did-lim-survive-the-quarantine/ Warning: The following contains spoilers from The Good Doctor winter premiere. Fall behind? Read our fall finale post mortem here.

This week on The Good Doctor, Morgan aids an infected Lim, while Shaun performs his first solo operation, mid-quarantine.

Down in the emergency room, we learn that the deadly virus, which has already claimed three lives, is not in fact airborne. Morgan discovers that EMT Tyler had a hole in his mask, which allowed blood and saliva particles to travel and infect him during transport of those sickly airline passengers. Lim, who was the fourth person to contract the virus, was last seen passed out. She pulls through after Morgan places her on extracorporeal life support. Afterwards, Melendez pays Lim a visit in recovery, and it’s clear that there are some real feelings there. “The idea of you not being around wasn’t OK with me,” he tells her. (After all, with whom would he share an after-work bourbon?)

No one else contracts the virus in Monday’s winter premiere, but another life is lost. Bob, the absentee father who agreed to donate bone marrow to his son Chris, dies after Park completes the extraction; his IV breaks off and travels to his heart, and the doctor is unable to reverse the damage. On the bright side, Chris’ transplant is a success, and Melendez and Claire’s patient lives to see another day.

the good doctor season 2 episode 11 shaunMeanwhile, an overwhelmed Shaun manages to conquer his crippling anxiety and help Morgan complete her combat-style operation on Pete. (As for the source of Shaun’s anxiety, Park goes ahead and shatters the overhead light responsible for that incessant buzzing sound.) Afterwards, Shaun tends to pregnant patient Viola, who suffers from preeclampsia. Even scarier, her placenta erupts during a procedure to turn the fetus. Shaun is then forced to perform an emergency C-section on his own, as the hospital’s chief obstetrician guides him through it from outside the quarantine zone.

Viola’s baby is delivered, but has a buildup of fluid and fecal matter in its lungs. Meanwhile, Mom is bleeding out. With no other doctors around, Shaun instructs Kellan to perform CPR on the newborn while he tends to Viola. Both mother and child are last seen in stable condition.

Afterwards, Kellan and Park have a heart-to-heart, during which Park admits that he let his family go because he felt like a failure. His own father had a mantra — “Be like a stone, never cry” — which he took to heart; when he couldn’t live up to that mantra, he skipped town. “My father’s voice is still in my head, but I’m working on getting it to be quiet,” Park says. And should he get there, there might be a chance at reconciliation with ex-wife Mia (played by Will Yun Lee’s better-half Jennifer Birmingham Lee) — or at least that’s the vibe that this recapper got. Why else have her appear out of the blue at the end of the episode?

the good doctor season 2 episode 11 glassman leaOn the “good news” front, Glassman finds out this week that his cancer has not returned, as previously suspected. His CT scan instead confirms that he contracted meningitis from a CSF leak in his head, which caused his memory loss. He’ll need corrective surgery, but is no longer in danger of permanent cognitive impairment. The former hospital head will be able to retain his medical license upon recovery.

Before the meningitis diagnosis rules out another cancer scare, Glassman tells Lea that he plans to hide his condition from Shaun, who nearly killed a patient the last time he found out that his mentor was sick. Lea speaks up on Shaun’s behalf and tells Glassman that he needs to treat Shaun like an adult. In response, Glassman, who doesn’t take kindly to Lea’s advice, accuses her of constantly toying with Shaun’s emotions. He apologizes after he returns with a much less grim prognosis, then takes her advice and tells Shaun about the corrective procedure he’ll need to remedy the CSF leak. As the hour draws to a close, Lea implores Glassy to give Shaun a hug, during which he tells Shaun how proud he is of him for delivering that baby. All three of them then head out for a well-deserved pancake breakfast.
