“The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) and the US Air Force completed two non-nuclear system qualification flight tests of the B61-12 gravity bomb on June 9 at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada,” the Department of Energy announced last week. “These tests are the first such end-to-end qualification tests on a B-2A Spirit Bomber for the B61-12.”

The experiments included running trials on “NNSA designed bomb assembly and US Air Force acquired tail-kit,” as part of the effort to evaluate the “aircraft’s capability to deliver the weapon and the weapon’s non-nuclear function.”

Different versions of the B-61 nuclear gravity bomb have been deployed across the US and NATO bases for five decades. While, over the years, the Pentagon produced numerous modifications to the deadly weapon, B61 variants of 3, 4, 7, and 11 remain in service.

The Pentagon is currently in the middle of the $ 7.6 billion ‘B61-12 Life Extension Program’, which aims to “refurbish, reuse, or replace all of the bomb’s nuclear and non‐nuclear components” and extend the service life of the B61 by at least 20 years. The “first production unit” is scheduled for completion in 2020.

Besides deploying B61-12 on modern and future long range bombers, the Pentagon is making sure the bomb can be easily used by F-15E fighter jets, and wants to integrate it with the F-35 Lightning II fifth generation combat jets, raising concerns it is creeping towards lowering the threshold for tactical use of nuclear weapons.

After former President Barack Obama authorized a nuclear modernization program, Trump revised it into an ambitious 30-year project that would cost at least $ 1.2 trillion to complete. Some $ 800 billion will be spent on maintaining nuclear forces, while about $ 400 billion will be spent on modernizing them, under the pretext of an existential need to deter “revisionist powers” such as China and Russia.

Russia has repeatedly expressed concerns over a loosening of nuclear launch guidelines under Trump’s Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which says that non-nuclear attacks which result in mass casualties or target key infrastructure constitute enough grounds for a US nuclear retaliation. Moscow also warned that deploying more B61 bombs to NATO bases in Europe would also violate the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Meanwhile, to justify taxpayer spending on nuclear upgrades, Washington constantly points the finger at Russia, accusing it of threatening its neighbors and US national security. “Russia has demonstrated its willingness to use force to alter the map of Europe and impose its will on its neighbors, backed by implicit and explicit nuclear first-use threats,” the NPR report claims, despite Russian military doctrine clearly stating that nukes can only be used in response to a nuclear attack, or when the state’s very existence is put under threat by a massive conventional attack.

Liverpool went into their showdown with Brighton knowing a point would seal a top-four finish ahead of Chelsea thanks to their superior goal-difference.

And Salah was on hand to calm any nerves at Anfield mid-way through the first half when he smartly slotted the ball past the stranded Maty Ryan.

That goal was the Egyptian’s 32nd of the season and he now holds the record for the most strikes in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

Salah’s milestone-goal set to the tone from there on in as Dejan Lovren doubled Liverpool‘s lead minutes before the break.

Dominic Solanke, who started up front for Jurgen Klopp’s side, ended the contest by scoring his first Liverpool goal from Salah’s assist in the 53rd minute, with Andrew Robertson adding a fourth late on.

Liverpool’s comfortable win saw them move on to 75 points and that meant Chelsea‘s result – a 3-0 loss to Newcastle – was inconsequential to them.

Klopp’s men can now look forward to back-to-back seasons of Champions League football for the first time since 2010.

Liverpool were forced to settle for fourth place after Tottenham’s thrilling 5-4 win over Leicester at Wembley moved them on to 77 points.

But Klopp’s side will care not a jot with silverware still in their sights as a hugely promising 2017/18 campaign draws to a close.

Liverpool travel to Kiev on Saturday May 26 to face Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

And they will do so confident that Salah can do the business for them as he chases down Ian Rush’s club-record of 47 goals in a season.

Alan Shearer, who previously shared the record for goals in a 38-game Premier League campaign with Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, paid tribute to Salah after his strike against Brighton.

“Congratulations @MoSalah on the new goal-scoring record,” the Newcastle legend wrote on Twitter. “I enjoyed it while it lasted.”

“What the boys have done this season is unbelievable,” Klopp said.

“So many injuries to key players. You saw today Lallana came on, we missed him the whole year, I can’t believe it, how we could achieve something like this without a player like him.

“Milner couldn’t play today, and Hendo and Gini have 9,000 games in their legs, the three up front try everything, Dom Solanke without match time doing things like this.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement. I am really proud of the boys.

“A nearly perfect season for us. We have had no chance to challenge Man City so then all you can really go for is a Champions League spot.”

Celebrations marking Morocco’s return to the World Cup finals turned violent in the Belgian capital, Brussels, with fans smashing windows, torching cars and scuffling with police, injuring 22 officers in the process.

Morocco’s 2-0 away win over Cote d’Ivoire, which ensured a return to the World Cup finals for the first time in two decades, prompted mass and wild celebrations in Moroccan communities worldwide. In Belgium, where some 100,000 people of Moroccan origin live, the festivities turned into violence and chaos.

Some 1,500 people gathered to celebrate the team’s win in Brussels late Saturday, and roughly 300 of them started to misbehave, according to Belgian police. The crowd smashed shop windows and overturned cars. Dustbins were also set alight and traffic lights and street signs vandalized. Riot police officers were dispatched to the scene to stop the violent celebrations.

At least 22 officers were injured in the scuffles. Police had to use pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the crowd. No arrests have yet been made.

Belgian prosecutors, however, vowed to punish those responsible, stating that law enforcement has evidence against the rioters. The number of injured officers and the scale of damaged property is unacceptably high, “especially for a football match that took place in Africa,” Belgium’s Interior Minister Jan Jambon stated.

“The fundamental problem is that such events are used as an excuse for reckless behavior and doing unacceptable things,” Jambon told Belgium’s Radio 1. “We have camera images – whoever did this will pay for this, there is no way around it.”
