Now that a Chinese court has granted Qualcomm an injunction against Apple that could block the sales of several older iPhone models (6S through X), Apple says it can fix things with a software update. When the ruling came down Apple said only devices running pre-iOS 12 software were in violation. All of the phones listed are capable of updating further, however Apple China told Reuters that “Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case.”

We’ll see if that update is enough to keep its older phones available for sale in the country, and if it holds up on newer XR and XS models that Qualcomm is also trying to ban. One thing is for sure — the struggle over technology, licensing fees and lawsuits between the two giants isn’t over yet.

ITC judge denies Qualcomm’s request, won’t stop iPhone imports https://briefnews.eu/itc-judge-denies-qualcomms-request-wont-stop-iphone-imports/ https://briefnews.eu/itc-judge-denies-qualcomms-request-wont-stop-iphone-imports/#respond Sat, 29 Sep 2018 11:42:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itc-judge-denies-qualcomms-request-wont-stop-iphone-imports/

While the patent lawsuit battle between Qualcomm and Apple is far from over — remember how long it took for things to get settled with Samsung? — we do have an update. On Friday, U.S. International Trade Commission judge Thomas Pender found (PDF) that the iPhones violate one of Qualcomm’s patents, but still refused to block imports of the devices. Their squabble is focused on Apple’s use of Intel chips instead of those made or licensed by Qualcomm, and how they’re being used in some iPhones.

According to Pender, “statutory public interest factors” weighed into his decision against issuing a ban. Other judges will review the decision, but as Bloomberg explained, if this holds up it removes a tool Qualcomm could use as leverage for a possible settlement from Apple. Reuters quoted Qualcomm lawyer Don Rosenberg saying “It makes no sense to then allow infringement to continue by denying an import ban.”

Apple is glad its imports haven’t been banned, while Intel’s general counsel, Steve Rodgers published a blog post that said “(Qualcomm) publicly disparaged Intel’s products – products created by the innovation and hard work of dedicated teams of scientists and engineers at Intel.” We’ll see everyone soon for the next round.

Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 670 is focused on AI https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-mid-range-snapdragon-670-is-focused-on-ai/ https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-mid-range-snapdragon-670-is-focused-on-ai/#respond Thu, 09 Aug 2018 05:33:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-mid-range-snapdragon-670-is-focused-on-ai/

While Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon 700 chip seemed like its answer for AI in lower cost phones, the company hasn’t forgotten about its mid-tier series. The new Snapdragon 670 also centers on speedier AI performance when it comes to computer vision, as it’s around 1.8-times faster than the previous generation Snapdragon 660. Notably, the Hexagon 685 DSP delivering all of that speed first appeared on the high-end Snapdragon 845 last December. It’s also part of the technology powering the HDR+ algorithm on Google’s Pixel 2, so there’s a good chance it’ll lead to better looking photos on cheaper phones.

The Snapdragon 670’s Adreno 615 GPU is 25 percent faster than before, making it even better suited for games (which will also see a benefit from the faster AI performance). And the new Kryo 360 CPU is 15 percent faster than the last chip. That’s not a huge jump, but any gains are welcome in mainstream phones. Qualcomm claims it’ll be better at handling several high-intensity tasks without eating up as much battery life, as well. It’s assisted by the Spectra 250 image processor, which can shoot 4K video while using 30 percent less power than before.

It’ll be interesting to see what sorts of devices will get the Snapdragon 670, compared to the 700 series. The latter was supposed to straddle the line between mid-range and the higher-end 800 series, but at this point the 670 seems like a worthy contender for that spot, as well.

Details of the SDM1000, tentatively named Snapdragon 1000, a new Qualcomm chip built for Windows 10 laptops, have started to trickle out.

Microsoft’s development of Windows 10 for ARM has seen the company partner with chip company Qualcomm. The first Windows 10 on ARM machines use the Snapdragon 835 processor, with designs based on the Snapdragon 850 (a higher clocked Snapdragon 845 intended for laptops) expected later this year. Snapdragon 1000 will be the follow-up to the 850.

The Snapdragon 1000 is believed to be an even more powerful laptop chip intended to go head to head with Intel’s Y- and U-series Core processors. These have a 4.5W and 15W power envelope, respectively, and are used in a wide range of tablets and Ultrabook-type laptops. The Snapdragon 1000 is reported to have a 6.5W power draw for the CPU itself, with a total power draw of 12W for the entire SoC. The Snapdragon 1000 test platform has 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and two 128GB UFS flash drives. It also has 802.11ad gigabit Wi-Fi, gigabit LTE, and a new power management controller.

Battle of Broadcom claims its first victim: Paul Jacobs out as Qualcomm’s executive chair https://briefnews.eu/battle-of-broadcom-claims-its-first-victim-paul-jacobs-out-as-qualcomms-executive-chair/ https://briefnews.eu/battle-of-broadcom-claims-its-first-victim-paul-jacobs-out-as-qualcomms-executive-chair/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2018 14:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/battle-of-broadcom-claims-its-first-victim-paul-jacobs-out-as-qualcomms-executive-chair/

The Jacobs’ family semiconductor business, otherwise known as Qualcomm, has been battered by market forces in recent years and is now trying to fight a hostile takeover bid by Broadcom. While it remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will survive as an independent business, it seems that the founder’s scion will no longer have a hand in steering its fate.

Today, Qualcomm announced that Dr. Paul Jacobs had been removed as executive chairman of the company his father co-founded in 1985, though he will remain on the board. The company hinted that the move was in part an effort ensure that its handling of Broadcom’s unwanted overtures is above reproach.

The board named Jeffrey W. Henderson, to serve as an independent and non-executive chair. What remains to be seen is how this may or may not shift Qualcomm’s posture toward Broadcom’s offer.

“The Board is committed to the principles of strong corporate governance and believes that having an independent director as Chairman at this important juncture in Qualcomm’s history is in the best interest of the Company and our stockholders,” said Tom Horton, Qualcomm’s lead director, in a statement. “We are focused on maximizing stockholder value, and will consider all options to achieve that objective, as we seek to move Qualcomm forward by closing the acquisition of NXP, strengthening our licensing business, and capitalizing on the enormous 5G opportunity before us.”

More to come.

Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 is a graphics powerhouse https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-flagship-snapdragon-845-is-a-graphics-powerhouse/ https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-flagship-snapdragon-845-is-a-graphics-powerhouse/#respond Mon, 12 Feb 2018 12:38:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-flagship-snapdragon-845-is-a-graphics-powerhouse/

Qualcomm recently let journalists benchmark the upcoming Snapdragon 845 on its own reference smartphone, and the results look promising for the Galaxy S9 and other new devices. On the one hand, CPU improvements were merely incremental, despite a switch to new ARM Cortex designs. On the other, Qualcomm’s new Adreno 630 GPU performed impressively, especially considering the power draw, putting rivals like Samsung and Huawei on notice. “There is need for more radical change to keep up with Qualcomm,” said Anandtech.

The Adreno 630 provides a one-two-three punch for the Snapdragon 845, offering 30 percent better performance and 2.5 times faster display output, all with 30 percent estimated power reduction. While no one was able to test the power draw, the chip pretty much smoked all rivals on most benchmarks. “Qualcomm current generations of SoCs are simply unmatched and the gap is so wide that I do not expect upcoming rival solutions to be able to catch up this year,” Anandtech said.

The one phone that did best it in a couple of graphics tests from GFXBench was Apple’s iPhone X. And when it comes to an overall score, the iPhone X with its A11 Bionic processor still blow away the Snapdragon 845 by a good 15 percent on Geekbench’s tests, Tech Advisor noted. It did gain a slight edge over its the iPhone X on Antutu’s combined tests, however. On the Android side, however, Qualcomm’s new chip is over 20 percent faster than its rivals.

The mixed results show there’s more to performance than benchmarks. Another component of the Snapdragon 845 is the new X20 cellular modem, which can handle 1.2 Gbps speeds, a boon to users lucky enough to have Gigabit LTE. It’s also got other new components like 802.11ad WiFi, quick charging and a fingerprint sensor. The way handset makers implement all those features will be key to a smartphone’s performance and user experience.

We’ll soon know more about that part. Samsung is schedule to unveil its Galaxy S9 flagship on February 25th, and a host of models from rivals like LG, Moto, Nokia, LG and Google should arrive soon after. At that point, you’ll see the benchmarks that matter a lot more than Qualcomm’s.

Android Wear is getting killed, and it’s all Qualcomm’s fault https://briefnews.eu/android-wear-is-getting-killed-and-its-all-qualcomms-fault/ https://briefnews.eu/android-wear-is-getting-killed-and-its-all-qualcomms-fault/#respond Sat, 10 Feb 2018 12:19:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/android-wear-is-getting-killed-and-its-all-qualcomms-fault/

Ars Technica would like to wish a very special second birthday to the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC. While most flagship SoCs have a life cycle of about one year on the top of the market, over the weekend the Wear 2100 will celebrate two years as the least awful smartwatch SoC you can use in an Android Wear device. It’s positively ancient at this point.

Seriously though, Qualcomm has seemingly abandoned the smartwatch market. The Wear 2100 SoC was announced in February 2016, Qualcomm skipped out on an upgrade for February 2017, and it doesn’t seem like we’re getting a new smartwatch chip any time soon.

In a healthy SoC market, this would be fine. Qualcomm would ignore the smartwatch SoC market, make very little money, and all the Android Wear OEMs would buy their SoCs from a chip vendor that was addressing smartwatch demand with a quality chip. The problem is, the SoC market isn’t healthy at all. Qualcomm has a monopoly on smartwatch chips and doesn’t seem interested in making any smartwatch chips. For companies like Google, LG, Huawei, Motorola, and Asus, it is absolutely crippling. There are literally zero other options in a reasonable price range (although we’d like to give a shoutout to the $ 1,600 Intel Atom-equipped Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45), so companies either keep shipping two-year-old Qualcomm chips or stop building smartwatches.

Qualcomm’s new chip brings ultra-wide screens to mid-range phones https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-new-chip-brings-ultra-wide-screens-to-mid-range-phones/ https://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-new-chip-brings-ultra-wide-screens-to-mid-range-phones/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 04:42:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/qualcomms-new-chip-brings-ultra-wide-screens-to-mid-range-phones/

Ultra-wide screens are hot stuff on smartphones these days, but there still isn’t a whole lot of choice: you tend to either spring for the high end or make do with budget models. Where are the in-between options? Qualcomm might just help. It’s introducing the Snapdragon 636 processor, an upgrade to the mid-tier 630 whose centerpiece is support for extra-tall FHD+ resolution (roughly 2,160 x 1,080) screens. You should get a reasonably speedy, dramatic-looking phone without making your bank account cry for mercy. It supports Assertive Display, too, so you can expect better visibility in less-than-ideal lighting.

Logically, there’s some added power under the hood to back this up. The Adreno 509 graphics are only about 10 percent faster when you stack them up against the 630, but the Kryo 260 CPU is about 40 percent faster — you’re probably going to notice the difference with intensive tasks. Don’t expect a complete revolution when the 630 was still brand new half a year ago, though. You’re still getting the familiar 600Mbps LTE support, and the Spectra 160 image signal processor delivers the same photo-taking quality. This is is ultimately a speed bump, it’s just one that will have a very visible effect on mid-range Android phone designs.

Qualcomm isn’t naming customers, but it’s shipping the 636 to phone makers in November. And importantly, companies can use it on boards that were originally intended for the 630 or 660. If your favorite brand wants to make an ultra-wide phone at a modest price, it can reuse the innards from an existing design and put the new device in your hands that much sooner.
