Apple’s patent battle with Qualcomm in China has intensified this week, with Qualcomm seeking a broader ban and Apple claiming it has a workaround to avoid Qualcomm’s patents.

On Monday, Qualcomm announced that a Chinese court had banned the sale of most iPhone models. However, Apple’s newest models, the iPhone XS and XR, were not covered by the ban because they had not yet been introduced when Qualcomm filed its lawsuit late last year.

Qualcomm remedied that oversight this week, asking the same Chinese court to ban sales of the XS and XR.

A Chinese court granted Qualcomm an injunction against Apple that halts sales and imports of most iPhone models in the country. The court ruled that several devices, including iPhone X, violated two Qualcomm patents related to resizing photos and managing apps.

The injunction reportedly affects iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X, though Apple is disputing the scope of the ban. It claims the order only affects iPhones running on older versions of iOS and that iOS 12 (which all of the above devices are compatible with) doesn’t violate the patents, according to CNBC.

“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us,” Don Rosenberg, general counsel of Qualcomm, said in a statement to Reuters.

“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world,” Apple said in a statement to CNBC. “All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China. Qualcomm is asserting three patents they had never raised before, including one which has already been invalidated. We will pursue all our legal options through the courts.”

The Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court (which earlier this year banned some imports of Micron’s memory chips) granted the preliminary order against four Apple subsidiaries. Qualcomm filed the suit late last year.

Apple and Qualcomm are also embroiled in legal battles in the US, and face a trial in April over a patent dispute. Meanwhile, the Federal Trade Commission is set to battle Qualcomm in court next month over antitrust issues related to — you guessed it — patents.

A couple of Microsoft engineers are contributing code to Google’s Chrome browser to help make it a native Windows on ARM application, as spotted by 9to5google.

Windows 10 on ARM, Microsoft’s second attempt at creating a line of PCs that run on ARM processors, does something important that Windows RT, Microsoft’s first attempt, did not. It can run x86 programs in an emulator, greatly expanding the range of software that it can use. But this has a performance penalty, so where possible, it’s better to have native ARM applications.

One of the biggest sticking points here is Chrome; Google’s browser is the most widely used third-party application on Windows. While Chrome does of course run on ARM systems (both Android phones and Chrome OS laptops), it doesn’t currently compile properly as a Windows-on-ARM application. The contributions made by the Microsoft developers are addressing these various issues—adding ARM64 build targets, specifying the right compilers and Windows SDK versions, providing alternatives to x86-specific code, and so on.

Qualcomm has accused Apple of stealing modem-chip designs and giving them to Intel in order to help Intel make cellular chips that could be used in iPhones at lower prices than those charged by Qualcomm.

“Apple has engaged in a years-long campaign of false promises, stealth, and subterfuge designed to steal Qualcomm’s confidential information and trade secrets for the purpose of improving the performance and accelerating time to market of lower-quality modem chipsets, including those developed by Intel Corporation, competitor of Qualcomm, to render such chipsets useable in Apple iPhones and other devices, with the ultimate goal of diverting Qualcomm’s Apple-based business to Intel,” Qualcomm wrote in a proposed amended complaint.

Apple started switching from Intel to Qualcomm modem chips in iPhones and other devices in 2011 when it launched the Verizon version of the iPhone 4, Qualcomm said. But Apple began switching back to Intel chips in some iPhone models in 2016, apparently to get lower prices despite the Intel chips’ lower performance. Qualcomm alleges that the switch to Intel in 2016 and Intel chip improvements since then were aided by Apple’s illegal actions.

Even as wearable devices have become more popular, the hardware backing many Wear OS (formerly known as Android Wear) devices hasn’t seen an update since Qualcomm’s 2100 SOC arrived in 2016. Now, as promised, a new chip will be unveiled later this year, and this afternoon Qualcomm invited journalists to a reveal event scheduled for September 10th. The invite only had a small smartwatch diagram and the words “It’s Time,” but Wareable’s interview with exec Pankaj Kedia already gave us some ideas about what to expect.

The new hardware will be built from the ground up for a wearable device, instead of trying to shrink smartphone technology, and should improve battery life. Plus, it will allow for smaller devices so that everyone can enjoy more stylish options. The big question, of course, is if we’ll see the first smartwatches packing Qualcomm’s new hardware at the event, like perhaps a Pixel Watch from Google?

Qualcomm will not re-nominate its former chair Paul Jacobs to the board of directors when the board meets on March 23, the company announced Friday.

Qualcomm also confirmed earlier reporters that Jacobs, its former CEO and chairman, is looking to acquire the company. The Financial Times first reported on Thursday that Jacobs is in talks with global investors, including SoftBank, as he seeks to gain ownership of the $ 89.7 billion publicly traded company.

The company said it has also withdrawn its slate of independent director nominees for Qualcomm’s annual shareholder meeting.
