Several hundred yards away from one of the premier automotive events in the country—The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering—lies yet another bounty of head-turning machines. Yes, it’s The Quail parking lot, home to a whole range of beautiful exotics, rare classics, and everything else in between.

Unlike the multimillion-dollar masterpieces on display within The Quail’s hallowed gates, the gems you’ll find scattered among the Camrys and the F-150s are not garage queens. Their owners see fit to use them as intended, at least during the festivities of Monterey Car Week.

We scoured the grounds this year and found plenty of cars to get excited about: a classic Mercedes-Benz SL, a Volvo P1800, a Ferrari F50, a Honda kei-car trucklet, and more. Flip through the gallery to see some of the standouts found beyond the hedges of The Quail itself.

Monterey Car Week is upon us, and to celebrate, Audi is bringing a slew of performance vehicles for display. The new R8 V10 Plus Spyder, which will be making its U.S. debut, will be the centerpiece, but it will vie for attention with the Audi Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak, the R8 LMS GT3 and GT4, and the RS5.

Having made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. earlier this year, the R8 V10 Plus Spyder will roll into the States for the first time in its appropriate habitat, the California coast. It will be at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, one of the few places in the world where it will not come close to being the rarest and most expensive vehicle on the field. But that doesn’t take away from how special it is.

Like the V10 Plus coupe, the Spyder boasts 610 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, which is 70 more horsepower and 15 more lb-ft of torque than the regular V10 Spyder. Audi claims it can bolt from zero to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and top out at 204 mph. In our test with the V10 Spyder, however, with the help of Audi’s brilliant seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel-drive system, we saw zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds, so it would not be surprising to see this model kiss 3.0.

Like its slightly lower-powered brother, the V10 Plus Spyder is a softtop; the top’s magnesium and aluminum frame weighs only 97 pounds total and only takes 20 seconds to open or close. Distinguishing the Plus are “racing shell” bucket seats, a carbon-fiber fixed rear wing, carbon-ceramic brakes, 19-inch light-alloy forged wheels, and a sport exhaust system with black outlets. Audi has yet to announce U.S. pricing, but in coupe form, the V10 Plus is $ 27,000 more than the regular V10; with the V10 Spyder at $ 176,350, that same upcharge would put the V10 Plus Spyder just over $ 200,0002018-Audi-R8-Spyder-V10-Plus-REEL

The winner will take home the biggest ever cheque for victory at the tournament, at $ 1.89million (£1.45million), while the total prize fund is more than $ 10m (£7.7m).

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, the highest ever ranked Asian golfer at No3 in the world, started as one of the favourites after winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio last week with a sensational 61 in the final round.

World No1 Dustin Johnson should also be among the front runners while Rory McIlroy will lead the European charge.

PGA Championship 2017 latest updates

5pm: Dustin Johnson is battling hard to stay in the group of 10 players at even par and is through 10 holes with two birdies and two bogeys, scrambling well a number of times to save par.

The good thing for him is that because he started at No10, he is through the so-called “Green Mile”, which is what many call the final three holes at Quail Hollow.

The distances of 15, 16, 17 and 18 actually add up to more than a mile but after the par five 15th, the last three are a brutal set of holes the last of which is supposed to be the hardest on tour. (Johnson escaped with a par).

Jim Herman has joined Woodland in the lead at three under – the 39-year-old from Ohio has just one career PGA Tour win and only three weekend appearances at a major so this is pretty unchartered territory.

4pm: To the pessimistic Lee Westwood fans, the Englishman’s familiar “briefly threaten in a major before falling away because he can’t putt” act is underway.

To those more optimistic souls, Westy is on the move! He’s one under through six holes.

Woodland retains the lead, having made it to the turn in a bogey-free 32 shots.

3pm: Lots of people getting themselves under par but not many pulling away from the pack. It’s like a peloton in a big road race at the moment with no single rider able to break away cleanly.

Gary Woodland is doing his turn at the front, three shots under par after seven holes. The 33-year-old has missed the cut in his last two appearances at the PGA but has made a much more tidy start to his campaign this time around.

2pm: Right. We’re rolling in North Carolina for the last major of the year, which will soon be the second when it moves to May in 2019.

But for the moment, it remains hot and humid in Charlotte for the tournament, with temperatures today expected to get up towards 30 degrees Celsius. Sweltering.

The first few starters are out with those going off on the 10th – it’s a two-tee start – making the best of the running.

England’s Chris Wood has flown out of the blocks by birdie-ing 10 and 11 to take an early lead at -2.

Spieth’s dramatic Open victory at Royal Birkdale means he needs to win the final major of the year to become the youngest player – and only the sixth ever – to complete a career grand slam.

And although McIlroy has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite on the back of his improved form and superb record at Quail Hollow, the world number four knows Spieth will be tough to beat.

“He has got that knack,” McIlroy said. “I call it resilience. I don’t know if there’s a better word to describe what it is that he has. But he has got this resilience where he gets himself in positions in tournaments where you don’t think he can come back from, and he does. It’s awfully impressive.”

Spieth took a three-shot lead into the final round at Birkdale but found himself one behind Matt Kuchar after a fifth bogey of the day on the 13th, which followed a wild drive, penalty drop and 20-minute delay before playing his third shot from the practice range.

However, the 24-year-old almost holed his tee shot on the par-three 14th as he played the next four holes in five under par to finish three ahead of a shellshocked Kuchar.

McIlroy added: “You can stand and hit the shots that he was hitting for those last five holes at the Open on the range, no problem. But being able to do it under those circumstances, under the pressure, that’s what makes him so good.

“Resilience, mentally tough, strong, whatever you want to call it. That’s his biggest asset. Being able to forget about a bad shot and move on to the next one, that’s his greatest weapon.”

McIlroy won his fourth major title at the 2014 US PGA but has failed to genuinely contend for another since, despite a share of fourth place in the Open being his sixth top-10 finish.

But the 28-year-old could hardly hope for a better venue than Quail Hollow to end his barren streak, having won his first PGA Tour title here in 2010 and cruising to a seven-shot victory in 2015, which featured a course record of 61 in the third round.

“Obviously I haven’t won this year and there’s been a few components to that, injury-wise, changing equipment and stuff. It has been a bit of a transitional year,” McIlroy said.

“But I feel like everything’s settled. My health is pretty much where it needs to be so I just want to go out there and play well this week.”

The US PGA will move from August to May from 2019, with the Players Championship switching to March and the BMW PGA Championship moving from May to September.

“From a player’s perspective, to now have one really big tournament every month from March and to have the FedEx Cup most likely at the end of August or start of September, it just has a better flow to it, I think,” McIlroy said.
