The Sydney to London direct route is thought to be on the cards after Qantas chief executive spoke at ahead of an International Air Transport Association gathering in Sydney, Australia.

Alan Joyce said: “I think we’ll get to the stage where, technically, we will know where the aircraft are going to be, in the next few months.”

Qantas is said to be keen to close the “tyranny of distance” between Australia and global financial hubs such as London and New York, with a 2022 deadline slated.

Perth and London non-stop flights have already launched, but the airline is said to be considering an order for ultra-long jets that would allow Sydney to London flights, with the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X in the running.

A purchase decision is expected next year if the plans make financial sense, Joyce explained.

Ultra-long haul flights are aimed primarily at business travellers and can allow airlines to charge a 20 per cent premium over one-stop rivals, according to industry data.

Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Eric Schulz said: “I would not pretend we would sell 1,500 airplanes like this, but I would say a reasonable assumption could be in the neighbourhood of 50-100 airplanes total.”

Ultra-long haul flights are becoming more possible thanks to new airplane technology.

Last week, Singapore Airlines announced it would launch 19-hour flights from Singapore to New York in October.

This is possible thanks to the Airbus A350-900ULR, which carries more fuel than a typical A350-900.

Sydney-London, however, is an even tricker journey, and Qantas wants to do it with more passengers than the 161 business and premium economy seats that Singapore Airlines plans to use on its ultra-long haul routes.

Qantas are yet to announce how many ultra-long haul jets it will order, with Joyce simply saying it would be a “reasonable-sized fleet”.

Potential routes for the airline include Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to London, New York and Paris or Frankfurt.

Perth-London has sold better than expected, particularly in premium cabins, Joyce said, with the economics working even with oil at prices hitting $ 75 a barrel.

Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said the airport was considering the construction of special arrival lounges to cater to the expected increase in passenger numbers thanks to the ultra-long haul flights.

He explained: “At the moment, 70 per cent of the world’s population is reachable from Sydney on one direct flight.

“Once those aircraft come to market the entire population of the world will be reachable in one flight. It is just an amazing step change in aviation.”

To help passengers prepare for their long journey, Qantas is offering pre-flight yoga classes to Perth-London passengers in its lounge.

They have also adapted their menu offering in all classes onboard.

Singapore to New York flights with Singapore Airlines will launch on 11 October, and the route will be served three times a week before daily operations commence from 18 October.

Using a car to pull an airplane is nothing new. We’ve seen a Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI, a Nissan Patrol and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S all tug widebody aircraft. A few years ago, there was even a Toyota Tundra that pulled the Space Shuttle Endeavour across the 405 in Los Angeles. Now Australia’s Qantas Airways has joined the fray, feauturing the all-electric Tesla Model X P100D.

Now this is the first time we know of that a road-going EV has pulled an airplane, in this case a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Pulling anything really comes down to torque and traction, something the Tesla has in spades. This model has all-wheel drive thanks to a dual-motor setup and makes peak torque off-the-line (though finding a Tesla’s exact torque rating is about as easy as searching for the Ark of the Covenant).

Not to detract from the Tesla’s achievement, but the 787-9 is relatively lightweight for an aircraft of its size. It uses a combination of composite materials, aluminum, titanium and more to help reduce weight. Still, we’re sure the Model X would have no problem with a larger or heavier plane to tug. And anyway, it was enough to set a Guinness World Record as the heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle.

A British couple missed out on a five day holiday to China due to a confusion over a new visa law.

Ian and Jane Swann, from Devon, were travelling from New Zealand to China when the incident occurred.

After visiting their son in Christchurch, they decided to fly to Beijing to take advantage of a new visa regulation which allows travels 144 hours without a visa.

This means that for six days, travellers can travel between the two countries and be expect from a visa.

However, when attempting to fly with Qantas Airways, they were refused to board.

The check-in staff at the airport in Christchurch prevented the couple from being allowed on the flight.

Mr Swann told The Independent: “They say we do not have a visa and their information is we require an approved visa prior to boarding flight.”

They then asked if they could instead travel to Sydney, which they had the correct documentation for in the hopes of heading to the Qantas headquarters.

Yet when this was also refused, the couple were forced to book a new flight with Emirates, costing £1,164.

They also missed out on visiting China and meant they travelled back to the UK via Dubai.

A spokesperson for Qantas told The Independent: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the Swann family who were incorrectly denied travel from Christchurch to Beijing for allegedly not having the required visas.

“We’re working with our check-in team to ensure this mistake doesn’t happen again and have reached out to the customer to offer compensation.”

The couple has said that they have since been offered £137 in compensation.

Qantas Airways have been contacted by Express.co.uk.

The ban follows on from another couple who were prohibited from flying thanks to visa issues.

A couple who were flying with EasyJet were attempting to travel to Turkey.

Yet when boarding, their e-Visas which they had downloaded were not allowed and were told they had to print them off.

This goes against the rules given by the Foreign Office which states an electronic copy is allowed.

It states: “Print off and carry a paper copy of your e-Visa, or make sure you have an electronic copy on a smartphone or other device to show to the immigration officer.”

Qantas, the flagship carrier for Australia has floated the idea of launching a cargo ticket for passengers.

The proposed plans would have passengers placed in a hold with room to exercise and sleep.

The new zones would be fitted with exercise facilities and sleeping booths that would provide luxurious respite for passengers on long-haul flights.

As airlines plan to extend flight times, the new cargo zone would be beneficial to the health of passengers.

Whilst speaking to the London Aviation club, Qantas Chief announced to the audience that the plans are being discussed.

Named “Project Sunrise”, the new zones could be revolutionary to long-haul travel.

According to The Australian Business Traveller, Alan Joyce revealed the plans in a speech at the club.

He said, “One of the concepts that we have is … could some of the freight areas we may not use be used as an exercise area?

“Could they be used for berths for people to sleep in?”

He went on to question the cabin class system saying: “Is there a new class that’s needed on the aircraft?”

According to Mashable, Qantas already approached the idea with Boeing and Airbus.

The airline already works with these companies on their 777-8X and A350-900 aircrafts.

Mr Joyce reportedly added that the new proposal would be a challenge for the airlines as planes are already tight for space.

He also explained that aviation regulator would need to changes the rules regarding pilot flight time.

The proposal comes as airlines such as Qantas are looking into extending flight times with a cabin full of passengers.

As current, the average stopping flight time from London to Sydney takes 23 hours.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner from London to Perth is currently the longest flight in the world.

If this flight time was to be increased, the new proposal zone would provide passengers with more space to move around the cabin.

Mr Joyce elaborated to say “nothing is off the table.”

The elaborate and bold plans would re-image commercial flying as we know it.

This weekend, Qantas will inaugurate a new route that will finally deliver non-stop scheduled flights between Australia and Europe.

The iconic Aussie airline will use its fleet of brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for its new service between Perth, Western Australia, and London. 

In October, Qantas took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Currently, the airline boasts a fleet of four Dreamliners.

And by the end of 2018, that number will grow to eight aircraft.

The Dreamliner is the first new aircraft type introduced to the Qantas fleet in a decade and is destined to connect Australia and the UK with nonstop flying.

For Qantas, the significance of the new plane cannot be overstated.

“One of the big advantages of the Dreamliner is that it gives us a range of destinations we couldn’t have done before,” CEO Alan Joyce told Business Insider in an interview last October. “It gives you better economics because it’s 20% more fuel efficient and with a lot lower maintenance cost given the new technology. That means there are routes we could have done before with distance, but couldn’t do economically that now come onto the radar screen.

“For Qantas, it also starts overcoming the tyranny of distance we have,” Joyce added.

Qantas also held a contest that allowed members of the public to submit names for the new plane. In the end, the name Great Southern Land was selected. It was chosen in honor of the ’80s rock anthem of the same name by the band Icehouse, which is about the vastness and the beauty of the Australian landscape.

Boeing turned the plane over to Qantas at its Everett Delivery Center outside of Seattle, Washington.

As part of the festivities, Qantas allowed a group of journalists to experience the jet’s delivery flight to company headquarters in Sydney alongside executives and dignitaries. Normally, delivery flights are fairly humdrum with only pilots and airline staff involved. However, this was a special occasion for Qantas, so the airline decided to make it a big event.
