Python is one of the most popular languages for coding in the world.
The majority of top U.S. colleges even use Python in their introductory coding classes: teaching students to use Python to build simple games, parse information from web pages, and even conduct language processing!
Still, many parents and students alike often wonder — how is Python actually used in companies or various fields?
Read on to learn how Python powers today’s leading industries, and plays a major role in numerous computer science disciplines.
Python is a high-level and general-purpose coding language — meaning that it’s easier to understand and can be used to solve a variety of problems!
With its simple syntax, high readability, usability across operating systems, Python is a valuable language to both learn and use for a variety of applications.
It’s therefore not surprising that Python is prevalent in not only today’s job market, but also in common technology we use everyday.
Python programming is a skill that can be used in virtually any industry, as well as in positions far beyond just software development. From industries like finance, healthcare, and insurance, to fields like aerospace to entertainment — Python-based tech is driving innovation and new solutions.
In our What is Python 101 guide, we introduced Python as well as a few of the fields Python is used in such as tech, finance, and biotech. But in this article, we’ll be taking a deeper look at even more of Python’s broad uses — specifically in the following areas:
While HTML, CSS, and Javascript may be the common choice of tools when it comes to web development, Python is also a great choice.
Web development refers to the building of websites on the internet, from static, plain text pages to dynamic ecommerce sites and interactive internet applications.
Coding is crucial in web development to build out site functions, optimize user experience, and ensure that that information is organized properly. Python’s web frameworks such as Django and Flask have become popular options for website development.
Python is a great option for backend web development, and is used by many companies today.
These open-source frameworks allow users to build web applications more efficiently due to Python’s ability to handle vast amounts of data and automate tasks. In fact, companies such as Instagram, Pinterest and Google incorporate Python in their backend web development.
Python is also a major language of choice when it comes to data science and data analysis.
In the age of big data, we come into contact with data frequently in our everyday lives, with technology such as navigation (GPS), online shopping, energy use, and wearables such as smart watches.
The average household contains around eleven devices and that number is likely to increase in the future! With so many devices, there is a vast amount of data that businesses need to process in order to provide their services.
Python-based tools are often used to visualize, process, and analyze large amounts of data.
Data science relates to processing data and inferencing trends — and Python is incredibly useful in this area due its intensive packages like scipy, numpy, and pandas.
Additionally, the matplotlib package can be used to build data visualizations. This makes Python a popular choice in fields like bioinformatics that also involve a lot of data and modeling.
These Python-based tools have become popular due to their ease of use and scalability. For example, Netflix uses scipy and numpy for numerical computing to manage user traffic across the platform.
By analyzing vast amounts of data, machine learning algorithms can find patterns and apply those patterns to make sense of future behavior.
The most obvious use of machine learning in products is recommendation systems. Companies such as Netflix, Spotify, and Youtube collect user activity to make predictions and suggest playlists and videos.
Scikit-learn and tensorflow are Python libraries that enable the use of algorithms for classification, clustering, and regression on large data sets. The high performance and extensive functionality of these libraries make them essential in any exploration of machine learning.
Machine learning is actually just one facet of artificial intelligence. AI refers to the intelligence of machines and the development of computer systems to perform human-oriented tasks such as perception or decision making.
One prominent example of artificial intelligence is in ridesharing apps, like Uber and Lyft.
Python is used in artificial intelligence for apps like Lyft or Uber. The AI system can then predict things like user demand and estimated arrival times.
Uber utilizes AI for predicting user demand and estimated arrival times (among other features) and much of this is accomplished through Python.
In addition to some of the previously mentioned Python libraries, AI functionality such as prediction models and neural networks can be created through other libraries like keras and pytorch.
Among popular programming languages, Python is one of the most diverse in its applications. Moreover, it’s deeply integrated within our everyday life as well as today’s leading companies.
The range of careers that involve Python include software engineer, web developer, data scientist, product manager, business analyst and more. Regardless of industry, companies in this technological age rely on data-driven decision making and Python is the perfect tool to do just that.
If you or your child are interested in the fields or roles listed above, then learning Python is a great choice!

]]>For kids 10 and under, there are many games and toys that help them understand the building blocks of computer programming. For example, Bitsbox delivers a physical box to your home every month containing a kit of projects, and then your young child can login to Bitsbox’s online platform to program their own version of these projects. The apps are selected based on difficulty and interests – they offer anything from interactive birthday cards to Tetris-like games. The apps can then be easily shared onto phones and tablets.
The Osmo is an iPad-based programming game system that incorporates physical blocks to write code. Using a set of magnetic blocks, your child controls Awbie, a cute character who must navigate the different levels of the Osmo universe. The physical blocks must be connected together logically so that Awbie can move on screen, using commands like “move,” “turn,” and “repeat.” The Osmo is ideal for kids as young as five years old because they don’t need typing skills to learn the basics of programming logic and to practice their critical thinking skills. After your child has mastered Awbie, they can move onto Osmo’s other products like Coding Jam, which uses a similar block system to generate digital music, and Coding Duo, a more advanced version of Coding Awbie with multiple players.
Cubetto is a completely screenless coding toy for kids 6 and under. Cubetto is a wooden robot that is programmed by placing colored blocks onto its surface, which instructs it where to move. The Cubetto is placed on top of different maps, mazes, and books. For example, in one challenge Cubetto must navigate around a big urban city. In another, he is in ancient Egypt, learning about pyramids, hieroglyphics, and the Sphinx. This is a great toy that encourages active play and critical thinking without any screens.
For older kids who love robots, the Anki Cozmo is a palm-sized robot, built with facial recognition, self-maneuvering capabilities, and an “emotion engine” to respond to real-world situations. It comes with a Code Lab app for users to program the Cozmo’s movements and responses to different environments. Code Lab is built on Scratch, a visual programming language. For example, you can use Code Lab to program Cozmo to move around and write his name, or to approach a human and Cozmo recognizes his or her face. There is even a more extensive software development kit to tap into the Cozmo’s computer vision capabilities and third party integrations (like with Google Assistant and Android). Kids can also play games with Cozmo like Memory Match and Keepaway.
If your child is interested in building hardware, the Kano might be the best toy for them. With the Kano, you follow a storybook to build a simple computer. The kit comes with a power supply, Raspberry Pi (the chip that powers the computer), keyboard, SD card, and optionally a microphone and an HD touchscreen. Once built, the touchscreen version allows you to program your own art, games and music. The coding starts with a block-based environment, but for more advanced students, there are projects available in Python and Javascript programming languages.
Many kids this age love Minecraft, an open-ended game where users can build their own worlds and experiences using the resources they acquire. Building in Minecraft is very Lego-like, where the pieces are varied and fit together in infinite combinations. Given the nature of Minecraft, “modding” the game is extremely popular, where you create new items, resources, and functionality by programming extensions to Minecraft’s code. The most popular mods, for example, add new animals, crops, and furniture pieces to the game; allow you to monitor and control your inventory more efficiently; and even introduce magic and wand-making into the game. While modding Minecraft was not designed for beginning programmers, there are sites dedicated for helping kids learn how to mod with online tutorials like LearnToMod and books like Coding with Minecraft.
There are also many online-based games and platform for students to start learning programming. CodeCombat offers a series of online levels in settings like the Kithgard Dungeon and the Backwoods Forest. Students gain points by completing challenges so that they can advance to the next level and buy power-ups. CodeMonkey is another online game where the student moves through a series of challenges in tracks like Coding Adventure and Coding Chatbots. The main language they focus on is CoffeeScript.
For students who want to take a more rigorous course, Khan Academy offers self-paced courses in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, focusing on website and game development. These courses include online videos, written explanations, and coding exercises.

An alarming viral video shows a toddler playing with a huge python snake in East Java, Indonesia.
Pythons are capable of squeezing large animals to death and swallowing them whole – yet the child shows no fear.
In fact, the infant appears to be thoroughly enjoying himself as he sits among the python’s coiled body as though it’s an armchair.
He appears to see it all as a game as the python’s body constricts around him.
The minute it gets too close for comfort, the toddler hops out and lies across the moving reptile.
He crawls over the python, with clearly no knowledge of how dangerous the creature could be.
At one point he rolls off so he runs to the head of the python and picks it up, grinning at the person filming.
He curls the head back on itself – but the snake doesn’t seem to mind being manhandled.
When the reptile drops itself back to the floor, the boy picks it up once more before the video clip ends.
Luckily no harm comes to the child despite the dangerous nature of pythons.
This has led one viewer to speculate that the snake could be a family pet.
“Had to have been a family pet or something,” commented on the video. “No one in right mind would sit there and film a child playing with a huge snake like that if they didn’t think it was safe and docile.
“Snake clearly has had interaction with children before or it would have struck in defence, even if it wasn’t seeing the child as food (sic).”
Some pythons only eat four to five times a year. They kill their prey by wrapping themselves around it and constricting it.
They will swallow the animal whole and can eat very large animals, digesting them slowly over a period of time.
Pythons are in fact kept as pets around the world and can live for up to 40 years in captivity.
At San Diego Zoo, their pythons are fed thawed rodents and rabbits, according to the zoo’s website.
However, earlier this year there was an incident of a 54-year-old woman being killed and eaten whole by a 23-foot reticulated python in Indonesia.
The incident came one year after a 25-year-old man was also eaten by a reticulated python in the same country.
According to National Geographic, such attacks are rare, but deforestation from Indonesia’s palm oil industry could be removing the snakes’ natural prey.
Recently, a viral video emerged of the horrible moment a man was gored by a stampeding bull in Spain.
A video of a python dining on a pigeon in the middle of a busy London street has gone viral, while it still remains a mystery where did the hungry snake come from.
The footage was shot on Leytonstone High Road early on Saturday and uploaded to a Facebook group dedicated to strange and weird occurrences in the British capital.
In the video, the python is seen wrapped around the pigeon and devouring the poor birds in front of amazed onlookers.
The exotic snake was eventually taken off the street and delivered to a nearby wildlife center by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) staff.

With pythons not endemic to London, an RSPCA official told the Press Association the animal could’ve been an escaped pet or the reptile could’ve just been thrown out by an irresponsible owner.

The comedy troupe Monty Python was a milestone in the evolution of comedy.
Hailing from the United Kingdom, members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin brought some of the most surreal, silly and satisfying laughs to television in the 1970s with their sketch series Monty Python’s Flying Circus. That success led them to the big screen, where they delivered revered comedy classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Life of Brian and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.
Now the hilarious work of Monty Python is coming to Netflix as the streaming service has just landed the rights to a huge chunk of the Monty Python comedy catalog, including their most famous television and film works, as well as a couple reunions and even a documentary about the troupe’s comedic influence. Find out what’s part of the Monty Python Netflix deal below.
This is where Monty Python got their start in 1969. The series aired 45 episodes of comedy sketches through 1975. What was so great about the comedy of Monty Python was the range of comedy on display. Of course there was silliness, but there was also smart material here, political and social commentary from time to time, and a surreal quality (especially from intermittent animated segments) that really tied the insanity of it all together rather nicely.
Easily the crown jewel of Monty Python’s work on the big screen, this is one of the most beloved comedies of all time. It influenced generations of comedians and spoof-style hilarity for years to come. Also, did you know that the money to make the film was raised in part with investments from rock groups such as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and Led Zeppelin. Crazy!
Though they no longer have Graham Chapman with them, Monty Python reunited for a live show in 2014. It was their first live performance in 34 years, and it could end up being the last time they all get together like that. It was initially planned as a single show, but expanded to 10 because the demand for tickets was through the roof. Thankfully, for those who couldn’t attend, it was recorded and broadcast into theaters, and soon you’ll be able to watch it on Netflix.
This documentary looks at the history and evolution of Monty Python, not to mention the influence they had on comedy. Talking heads from the likes of Judd Apatow, Hank Azaria, David Hyde Pierce and more reflect on their love of Monty Python and the legacy of comedy that still has an impact on entertainment today.
Above are just some of the titles we wanted to call out, but here’s the whole list of the titles that will hit Netflix this year:
All of these titles are expected to hit Netflix in the United Kingdom, Canada and other international territories on April 15, but they won’t arrive in the United States Netflix library until sometime later this year. You might notice that not everything from their library is here, such as Mothy Python’s The Meaning of Life (though the live special for the film’s 30th anniversary is included). But there could be more additions on the way.

Animal lover Daniel Brandon, 31, died from asphyxiation at his home near Basingstoke, Hampshire, on August 25. One of his 10 snakes, Tiny, who Brandon had owned for 16 years, was spotted out of her pen, hidden in a corner.
Brandon’s mother told Basingstoke Coroners Court her son kept ten snakes and 12 tarantulas in their family home. She added that Brandon called Tiny his “baby.”
Coroner Andrew Bradley said there was no doubt Brandon died “as a result of contact with Tiny” and he recorded a verdict of misadventure. But he added that he does not believe Brandon’s death occurred by way of aggression.
“We have nothing apart from Tiny so I have to accept she is instrumental in Dan’s death.
“I do not believe in any way it was aggression from Tiny nor a confrontation – if anything it was a show of affection, a moment of peace,” Bradley said.
The coroner added the snake had probably then hidden “because of the shock of him falling or because of his reaction.”
Pathologist Dr Adman al-Badri said there were no specific signs of strangulation on Brandon’s neck, and that the asphyxiation diagnosis was only reached by exclusion.
Moreover, examination showed there were no scratches on the snake’s skin either, which would indicate Brandon had struggled to pull the snake off.
But Brandon’s mother said her son was more cautious with Tiny than with the other snakes as he was aware of how strong she had grown.
“He was more wary of Tiny than the other snakes. He said she’s very strong.
“He had stopped putting her round his neck because she was so strong and unpredictable.”
She later recounted in court the night of her son’s death. She said had heard a loud bang from upstairs, but assumed it was a dumbbell which had fallen down or that he had knocked something.
But after calling him to dinner, she went upstairs to find him unconscious in his bedroom.
“I went up and he was face down on the floor. He felt a little bit cold. There were 10 snakes and 12 tarantulas all away in the vivarium but I could not see Tiny.
“At that point I shook him to try and wake him up and called 999. Nobody saw Tiny until later; she had hidden under a box that Dan used to put all his snake stuff in and she had found a way under there and was coiled up.”
Paramedics arrived at their home eight minutes later but despite their best efforts, Brandon couldn’t be saved.

The official repository for the widely used Python programming language has been tainted with modified code packages, a computer security authority in Slovakia warned. The authority also said the packages have been downloaded by unwitting developers who incorporated them into software over the past three months.
Multiple code packages were uploaded to the Python Package Index, often abbreviated as PyPI, and were subsequently incorporated into software multiple times from June through this month, Slovakia’s National Security Authority said in an advisory published Thursday. The unidentified people who made available the code packages gave them names that closely resembled those used for packages found in the standard Python library. The packages contained the exact same code as the upstream libraries except for an installation script, which was changed to include a “malicious (but relatively benign) code.”
“Such packages may have been downloaded by unwitting developer[s] or administrator[s] by various means, including the popular ‘pip’ utility (pip install urllib),” Thursday’s advisory stated. “There is evidence that the fake packages have indeed been downloaded and incorporated into software multiple times between June 2017 and September 2017.”

FRONTOTEMPORAL dementia is one of the less common types of dementia, and is sometimes called Pick’s disease or frontal lobe dementia. Terry Jones, Monty Python star has the condition, but what does it mean?![]()
The giant python paid a creepy visit to the home of a family on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers snapped a picture of the back garden where the snake was found.
The image was uploaded to Facebook, with a challenge to “spot the snake”.
Viewers were baffled as they searched the entire photo with no apparent python in sight.
Hundreds of people commented with their own guesses, including Mary Jane who wrote: “Long black thing running the length of the garden. Looks like a hose.”
Mandy Lees guessed: “Bottom left, curled up, python or carpet snake.”
Danny Leggate said: “Bottom left hand corner in blue box.”
The snake was so well camouflaged, it remained out of sight for many viewers until the hiding spot was revealed.
Snake catcher Lockie wrote: “The snake was on the fence in the back right hand corner of the photo.”
The coastal carpet python was mostly hidden by the green plant hanging over the back right corner of the fence.
Its dark body could just be made out poking through the leaves.
One Facebook user commented: “That is one hefty snake, it’s been well fed – I hope not on small domesticated pets.”
