North Korea has demanded the US provide evidence to support its claims that the WannaCry ransomware attack was engineered by Pyongyang. The attack crippled 200,000 computers in 150 countries earlier in 2017.

Washington’s allegations are merely a “baseless provocation” used to generate tensions between the countries, Pak Song Il, the North Korean ambassador for American affairs at the UN, told AP.

Pyongyang considers these claims an attempt to create an “extremely confrontational atmosphere,” the North’s top official stated. “If they are so sure, show us the evidence,” the envoy added.

Earlier in December, White House Homeland Security advisor Tom Bossert wrote an Op-Ed claiming that the US has proof that it was North Korea behind the WannaCry cyber-attack, citing a “careful investigation.” Bossert named Pyongyang as the culprit in the attack, although no particular organization or person affiliated with the North Korean government was specifically named.

In May 2017, the global WannaCry cyber-attack targeted computers worldwide. During the attack, personal data was stolen from private users and ransom payment was requested in the form of bitcoin.

Following the ransomware attack, speculation emerged that North Korea may have played a significant role in the hack. Neel Mehta, a prominent Google security researcher, revealed a resemblance between the code used in what is said to be an early version of WannaCry ransomware, and that of a hacking tool attributed to the notorious Lazarus Group in a Twitter post.

‘Cannibals & murderers’: Pyongyang’s shocking anti-US propaganda prints revealed (GRAPHIC IMAGES) https://briefnews.eu/cannibals-murderers-pyongyangs-shocking-anti-us-propaganda-prints-revealed-graphic-images/ https://briefnews.eu/cannibals-murderers-pyongyangs-shocking-anti-us-propaganda-prints-revealed-graphic-images/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 23:11:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cannibals-murderers-pyongyangs-shocking-anti-us-propaganda-prints-revealed-graphic-images/

Tensions between the US and North Korea are rapidly escalating with both countries engaged in a bitter war of words. Gruesome sketches showing alleged US atrocities that Pyongyang uses in its propaganda campaign against Washington have been published online.

The graphic prints, showing US soldiers executing North Koreans, setting dogs on civilians, torturing women and leaving children to die during the 1950-1953 Korean War, constitute part of a collection of the North Korean Museum of American War Atrocities. They are believed to be mostly created around 2005.

Located in the town of Sinchon in the North’s south-western South Hwanghae Province, the museum commemorates what Pyongyang claims to be the Sinchon Massacre that reportedly claimed the lives of more than 35,000 people.

The Sinchon Massacre was committed in 1950 primarily by South Korean forces with the active collaboration of the US military, according to the North’s narrative. The atrocities reportedly lasted for about 52 days and left a quarter of the town’s population dead. According to some reports, the US Air Force also used illegal bacteriological weapons in the area.

The pictures featured in the museum established in the town that has since been turned into national shrine and now a cornerstone of the North Korean propaganda machine, show American soldiers directly participating in various atrocities against North Korean civilians.

In one picture, American soldiers are shown torturing a North Korean woman by removing her teeth with pliers while another one depicts them burning a man with hot metal. Other disturbing pictures show US servicemen slicing a man’s head with a jagged blade, driving a nail into the head of a female prisoner and burning a man at stake.

The gruesome images also show US soldiers leaving a toddler to die in a mass grave, while burying civilians that were apparently shot dead. One shows them holding a gun to an infant girl’s head as she weeps at the sight of her dead family on another.
Further shocking drawings show US forces taking North Korean children from their mothers and kicking bound women and children into a trench in the ground with an apparent intention to bury them alive.

Established in 1958, the grim museum that also exhibits personal belongings of those who are claimed to have fallen victims to the Sinchon Massacre atrocities, has repeatedly been visited by the North Korean leaders.

Kim Jong-un visited the venue in 2014 together with his sister. At that time, he reportedly denounced Americans as “cannibals and murderers seeking pleasure in slaughter.”

Tensions around the Korean Peninsula continue to escalate following the North’s nuclear and missile tests in early September. Earlier Thursday, the North Korean KCNA state news agency reported that nearly five million people have volunteered to join or re-enlist in the North Korean military to fight the US.

The news came after Kim vowed to “tame” US President Donald Trump “with fire.” The day before, Trump said the US is ready to strike North Korea if necessary with “devastating” consequences for the Asian country.

On September 19, Trump threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea, a country with 26 million people, in his first UN address. He also later said that the North Korean leader “won’t be around much longer.”

Not to be outdone, Pyongyang has also fired off equally aggressive statements. On September 25, the North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong-ho accused the US of “declaring war” and said North Korea now has “the right to shoot down US strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country.”

As Pyongyang and Washington are whipping up tensions, Moscow and Beijing are urging calm. Russia and China are calling for the implementation of the so-called “double freeze” initiative that envisages North Korea suspending its nuclear and missile program in exchange for the US and South Korea abandoning their military exercises in the region.

The US, however, continues to reject this proposal.

The South Korean military has conducted a live-fire drill, simulating an attack on the North’s nuclear site, which involved fighter jets and a surface-to-surface ballistic missile, Yonhap reports.

The combined exercise involved South Korea’s Hyunmoo-2A ballistic missile, as well as long-range air-to-ground missiles, all of which “accurately hit their designated targets,” according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The simulated targets were in the Sea of Japan, at a range that corresponds to the distance to North Korea’s Punggye-ri nuclear test site, the military added, according to Yonhap.

“Our military has conducted a joint drill of the Air Force and the Army,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. “It is a strong warning after North Korea’s sixth nuclear test.”

“We fired the Army’s ground-to-ground ballistic missiles, and the Air Force’s long-range air-to-ground missile at the East Sea target,” the statement read.

The military added that the exercise carried out by South Korean forces is just the first demonstration of their power, warning that they are “preparing additional countermeasures by the ROK-US alliance.”

On Sunday, Pyongyang claimed it had successfully tested a new hydrogen bomb which can be mounted on an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). The announcement on state TV came shortly after a powerful “artificial earthquake” rocked a known North Korean nuclear site.

China and Russia have strongly condemned the test, but urged Seoul and Washington to show restraint.

Meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Xiamen, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, agreed to “appropriately deal” with the nuclear test. Both leaders recognized the necessity “to stick to the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and to maintain close communication and coordination to deal with the new situation,” Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

Seoul, Washington and Tokyo have meanwhile called for tougher sanctions and countermeasures.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned that any attack on the United States or its allies would be met with a “massive military response.” He noted that while the US was not “looking for the total annihilation” of North Korea, it had “many options to do so.”

“Any threat to the United States or its territories, including Guam or our allies, will be met with a massive military response – a response both effective and overwhelming,” Mattis said.

Pentagon vows to protect US & allies after Pyongyang’s ‘escalatory ICBM test’ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-vows-to-protect-us-allies-after-pyongyangs-escalatory-icbm-test/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-vows-to-protect-us-allies-after-pyongyangs-escalatory-icbm-test/#respond Wed, 05 Jul 2017 03:06:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagon-vows-to-protect-us-allies-after-pyongyangs-escalatory-icbm-test/ The Pentagon has vowed to defend the US and its allies against any possible North Korean threat after Washington confirmed Pyongyang’s claim that it has developed the technology to potentially deliver a nuclear warhead to the US mainland.

The Pentagon has concluded that North Korea test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can potentially strike the United States. Initially, the US military had assessed the missile fired Tuesday morning to be of an intermediate-range category.

“We remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies and to use the full range of capabilities at our disposal against the growing threat from North Korea,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement. White also condemned Pyongyang’s “escalatory launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.”

The US response comes after North Korea boasted about conducting a successful launch of its Hwasong-14 missile, which allegedly flew for a distance of 933 km (580 miles), reaching an altitude of 2,802 km (1,741 miles) at the peak of the 39-minute flight.

For years now, North Korea has been developing nuclear technology and missiles that will be able to strike the US mainland, located around 9,000 km (5,500 miles) away. A missile is considered intercontinental if it can travel at least 5,500 km (3,400 miles). ICBM technology requires complex methods and means of engineering to successfully deliver the payload to a designated target.

The latest test managed to verify technical capabilities needed for a fully functioning ICBM, state news agency, KCNA reported. Tuesday’s launch tested the stage separation, the atmospheric re-entry of the warhead and the late-stage control of the warhead, according to KCNA.

“The test-launch confirmed the features of the rocket’s blast-off from its launching pad and technological features of its guidance and stability system in its active-flight stages and structural system,” KCNA said.

The missile is capable of carrying a “large, heavy nuclear warhead” KCNA added, as cited by AFP. The report further stated that Pyongyang’s battle with Washington had entered the “final stage.”

Immediate US military assessment of the projectile fired by North Korea said the rocket was a land-based intermediate-range ballistic missile. The Russian military also said the range of the projectile classified it as an intermediate-range and not an ICBM.

However, after reviewing their data, the Pentagon now apparently believes that the North Korean rocket had a two-stage design which would provide enough velocity for the projectile to fly the range required to be classed as ICBM.

Seoul meanwhile stopped short of concluding that the North succeeded in developing an ICBM, with its defense ministry noting that “the missile was launched from a fixed launch pad” and that “we have yet to confirm whether (the missile) has re-entered (the atmosphere),”according to Yonhap.

The US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, lent additional credibility to North Korea’s claim that it had launched an ICBM.

“The United States strongly condemns North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Testing an ICBM represents a new escalation of the threat to the United States, our allies and partners, the region, and the world,” Tillerson said in a statement.

Tillerson said international action is required to stop what he called the North Korean “global threat,” as he warned countries against supporting Pyongyang. “We will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea,” Tillerson underlined.

Washington has called a UN Security Council meeting Wednesday to discuss the latest developments on the Korean peninsula. The US military has also conducted joint drills with their South Korean counterparts, firing surface-to-surface tactical missiles into neutral waters in an apparent show of force to Kim Jong-un.

While the US and its allies remain nervous about North Korea’s missile delivery capabilities, Pyongyang is yet to design a functioning nuclear warhead that can be deployed on the ICBM. Last September, North Korea claimed that it had conducted its fifth nuclear test, announcing it is now capable of mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic rockets.

The September test appears to be the most powerful in the history of North Korea’s nuclear program, measuring 20-30 kilotons according to estimates from South Korea’s Defense Ministry and data from various universities across the globe. The yield from the previous January 2016 test was about 6-10 kilotons. Earlier tests were conducted in 2013 (6-16 kilotons), 2009 (2-5 kilotons), and 2006 (1-2 kilotons).

The US and its allies have recently been anxious that Pyongyang is set to carry out its sixth nuclear test. South Korean defense minister Han Min-koo said Wednesday there was a “high chance” that a sixth test was imminent as “North Korea’s eventual goal is to weaponize its nuclear power.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, meeting in Moscow, called for a freeze of Kim Jong-un’s nuclear and ballistic programs with a simultaneous reduction of US military activities on the peninsula.

As tensions in the region continue to escalate to alarming levels, China and Russia – which both share a land border with North Korea – condemned the test and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

“We’ve agreed to promote our joint initiative, based on a Russian step-by-step Korean settlement plan and Chinese ideas to simultaneously freeze North Korean nuclear and missile activities, and US and South Korean joint military drills,” Putin said at a news conference in Moscow.

North Korea has been under UN sanctions since 2006, when the Security Council prohibited the provision of large-scale arms, nuclear technology, and related training to Pyongyang. Despite the economic pressure, North Korea continues to pursue its research and developments in the nuclear sphere.

US President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter, wondering if North Korean leader Kim Jong-un really doesn’t have anything better to do than launching missiles. The statement came following Pyongyang’s latest medium-range ballistic missile test.

“North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer,” the US leader wrote on his Twitter.

Trump also said that Seoul and Tokyo’s patience is wearing thin after dozens of such North Korean tests.

In his second tweet, he once again urged China to exert more pressure on the North.

“Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!” Trump said.

The series of two tweets came just after North Korea carried out another ballistic missile test on Tuesday morning. According to North Korean state TV, the ICBM covered some 933 kilometers in 39 minutes, reaching an altitude of 2,803 kilometers.

The US military tracked the projectile right from the launch and determined that it was a single, land-based, intermediate range ballistic missile, which fell into the Sea of Japan after covering more than 930 kilometers in 37 minutes. The missile did not pose a threat to North America, according to the US military.

After meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Friday, Trump stated that “the era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed,” adding that Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo are working together to deter the North Korean “menace.”

Prior to that meeting, National Security Adviser Herbert Raymond McMaster said on Wednesday that previous approaches to the North Korean ‘threat’ have failed. He also said that the president had ordered US officials to “prepare a range of options,” including a military one, “which nobody wants to take.”

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Pyongyang launched a projectile in the eastern direction from Wonsan, Gangwon Province at dawn.

“It is estimated to be a Scud type [missile],” JCS said, adding, that the projectile flew about 450 kilometers.

“The president was immediately notified of the situation, and the president ordered the NSC Standing Committee at 7:30 am,” the military statement said.

The missile was tracked for six minutes, US Pacific Command said, confirming that the projectile landed in the Sea of Japan. The US military said the missile did not pose a threat to North America.

US President Donald Trump has also been briefed about the launch, according to a White House official.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said the North Korean launches pose risk to air traffic in the area as well as to vessels navigating the Sea of Japan, Reuters reports.

“This ballistic missile launch by North Korea is highly problematic from the perspective of the safety of shipping and air traffic and is a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions,” Suga told reporters in televised remarks.

Suga announced that North Korea launched one ballistic missile around 5:40 am from the east coast, and that the projectile seemed to have fallen in the Sea of Japan within the Japanese exclusive economic zone (EEZ). He condemned the launch as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

“As we agreed at the recent G7, the issue of North Korea is a top priority for the international community,” Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in brief comment on the launch. “Working with the United States, we will take specific action to deter North Korea.”

Pyongyang announced earlier this month that it had successfully tested the Pukguksong-2 intermediate range ballistic missile after a projectile was detected landing in international waters off Japan’s east coast. The allegedly nuclear-capable missile was launched just a week after North Korea launched its Hwasong-12 rocket.

The launch comes amid extremely high tensions on the Korean Peninsula. On Sunday, US Defense Secretary James Mattis warned that a conflict with North Korea would be “catastrophic.”

“The North Korean regime has hundreds of artillery cannons and rocket launchers within range of one of the most densely populated cities on earth, which is the capital of South Korea,” Mattis said on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation.’

“This regime is a threat to the region, to Japan, to South Korea. And in the event of war, they would bring danger to China and to Russia as well,” the Pentagon chief added. “But the bottom line is it would be a catastrophic war if this turns into a combat if we’re not able to resolve this situation through diplomatic means.”

President Trump has repeatedly vowed to end Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, warning last month that if diplomacy fails, a “major, major conflict” with North Korea is possible.

Trump has also pressed China to put pressure on North Korea as its Pyongyang’s main economic lifeline. Beijing, however, has its own concerns with Washington’s decision to deploy its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea, saying it’s a threat to its own security and will not contribute to the easing of tensions with the North.

The Chinese have also repeatedly called for all sides to remain calm and level-headed during the North Korean stand-off and has urged the parties to “stop irritating each other.”

Moscow and Beijing have also been calling for a revival of the six-nation denuclearization talks which have been frozen since 2009.

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang’s latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China.

The identity of the object remained unclear, the military said, but Yonhap news agency said it was possibly a drone, more than 90 shots were fired in return and it disappeared from radar screens.

The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North’s test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nuclear-tipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets.

The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea’s lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions.

The North has made no secret of its plans to develop a missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons programs, even from China. It says the program is necessary to counter U.S. aggression.

“We urge North Korea to not do anything to again violate U.N. Security Council resolutions,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry’s website on Tuesday.

“At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint, not be influenced by every single incident, …persist in carrying out Security Council resolutions on North Korea and persevere with the resolution of the issue through peaceful means, dialogue and consultation.”

Wang was responding to reporters’ questions on Monday while in Ivory Coast, according to the statement.

The North’s official KCNA news agency, citing the spokesman for the foreign ministry, said the country had “substantially displayed” the capabilities for mounting a nuclear attack on Hawaii and Alaska and had built full capabilities for attacking the U.S. mainland.

U.S. and South Korean officials and experts believe the North is several years away from having such a capability.

North Korea said on Monday that Sunday’s launch met all technical requirements that could allow mass-production of the missile, which it calls the Pukguksong-2.

The test was North Korea’s second in a week and South Korea’s new liberal government said it dashed its hopes for peace on the peninsula.

Moon Jae InREUTERS/Jung Yeon-Je/Pool

The U.N. Security Council condemned the launch and again expressed its concern over the North’s behavior. The Security Council is due to meet behind closed doors later on Tuesday.

North Korea’s recent missile tests were a legitimate act of self-defense by a “fully-fledged nuclear power”, North Korean diplomat Ju Yong Chol told the U.N. Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on Tuesday.

“It is the United States’ hostile policy and its aggressive joint military drills, nuclear threats and military build-up around the Korean peninsula that really aggravates the situation on the Korean peninsula and the region and which compels the DPRK to also up its nuclear deterrence,” he said.

DPRK are the initials for the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Ju was the only speaker at the forum who did not begin his remarks by offering condolences to Britain for the victims of Monday night’s bomb attack at a concert in Manchester.

The South Korean military did not say if the unidentified object was hit by the warning shots on Tuesday, but it disappeared from military radar.

North Korea has previously sent drones into South Korean airspace, with some crashing. In January 2016, South Korea fired warning shots at a suspected drone which turned back.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that a “major, major conflict” with North Korea is possible over its weapons programs, although U.S. officials say tougher sanctions, not military force, are the preferred option to counter the North Korean threat.

US Navy strike group heads towards N. Korea over Pyongyang’s ‘nuclear threat’ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-strike-group-heads-towards-n-korea-over-pyongyangs-nuclear-threat/ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-strike-group-heads-towards-n-korea-over-pyongyangs-nuclear-threat/#respond Sun, 09 Apr 2017 09:08:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-navy-strike-group-heads-towards-n-korea-over-pyongyangs-nuclear-threat/ The US Navy has sent a carrier-led strike group toward the western Pacific Ocean to provide a physical presence near the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against North Korea’s “destabilizing” nuclear weapons program and looming missile tests.

“US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson Strike Group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the Western Pacific,” Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command, told AFP.

“The number one threat in the region continues to be North Korea, due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilizing program of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability,” he added.

Deployed from San Diego to the western Pacific since early January, the strike group has been involved in numerous drills with Japan and South Korea and routine patrol operations in the disputed South China Sea. It is now headed from Singapore to the Western Pacific Ocean, scrapping planned port visits to Australia.

Retired four-star US General Jack Keane said earlier this week that in the wake of recent nuclear missile tests conducted by North Korea, bombing the country’s nuclear facilities “may be the only option left.”

Keane told Fox News that if the US was facing an imminent attack from a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), US President Donald Trump would have to act preemptively. “We’re rapidly and dangerously heading towards the reality that the military option is the only one left when it comes to getting North Korea to denuclearize,” Keane told Fox News.

Last month, Trump accused North Korea of “behaving very badly” and “playing” the US for years.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also told reporters during his visit to South Korea that Washington’s “policy of strategic patience has ended,” noting that “all options are on the table.”

Viktor Ozerov, head of the defense affairs committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament, warned on Sunday that there’s a high risk of a US missile strike on North Korea’s military facilities.

The US president could make the move due to the absence of unanimous condemnation from the UN Security Council of the US missile attack on Syria, Ozerov said.

On Friday, the US carried out a missile strike on the Shayrat airfield near Homs in response to an alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town in Idlib province, the blame for which Washington pinned on Syrian President Bashar Assad.

A total of 59 Tomahawk missiles were deployed in the pre-dawn attack. The Russian Defense Ministry noted on Saturday that Washington has presented no evidence yet that the Shayrat airfield had any chemical weapons.

Syrian officials have so far confirmed that six people were killed and several others wounded in the operation.

“The US attack on the airfield of the Syrian Armed Forces, which was not unanimously condemned by the UN Security Council, was explained by the threat of US national security. North Korea can be perceived by Washington as an even greater threat,” Ozerov told RIA Novosti.

On Saturday, North Korea lambasted the US strike, saying it was “an unforgivable act of aggression” that also proved that Pyongyang’s decision to develop nuclear weapons was “the right choice a million times over.”

“The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and unforgivable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn this,” KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry as saying.

“The reality of today proves our decision to strengthen our military power to stand against force with force was the right choice a million times over,” KCNA said. On Wednesday, Pyongyang fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, drawing strong condemnation from Tokyo and Seoul.

Last month, North Korea, believed to be working toward developing a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, successfully fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, three of which reached Japan’s territorial waters.
