Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world’s most popular video site. Chrome is the world’s most popular browser. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it’s just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google’s next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.
Protocol’s Janko Roettgers has a report on “Project Caviar,” Google’s plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby’s old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company’s technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol’s report says $ 50 streaming sticks end up having around $ 2 of that price tag go to Dolby.
Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that’s three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Atmos is supported by Apple, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

]]>Despite becoming one of the most important filmmakers of the last 40 years, Cameron is an explorer at heart, and his fascination with the Earth is on display in the new National Geographic series, Super/Natural. Executive produced by Cameron, Super/Natural takes viewers into the minds of the world’s extraordinary creatures. Thanks to scientific and technological advancements, the series displays some of the most fascinating imagery ever recorded.

Digital Trends participated in a roundtable discussion with Cameron about the upcoming series. He spoke about discovering new science for Super/Natural, designing new creatures for Avatar, and the excitement behind looking for new ideas.
Note: This interview has been condensed and edited for length and clarity.
Digital Trends: You’ve mentioned when humans get older, they are further removed from nature. With Avatar, you’re bringing people back to a state of childlike wonder with what we see onscreen. In Super/Natural, people are in awe thanks to these jaw-dropping visuals. How were you able to recapture that childlike wonder in Super/Natural?
James Cameron: Super/Natural, for us as the creators of the show, was all about attitude. We wanted to have a style. We wanted to have a subjectivity to it. We wanted to take you into the minds and behind the eyes of these animals and see how they view life. The extraordinary senses that they bring to bear and the strategies that they use. They’re not as intelligent as us, but they’ve had millions of years, in some cases, to develop these incredible strategies, these alliances, these ways of behaving. A lot of this is new science.
Collectively – National Geographic; my company, Earthship; and the lead production house, Plimsoll, in the U.K. – we looked for intriguing new results that had come from scientific investigation. There are obviously thousands of scientists out there all over the world looking into the nooks and crannies of nature to understand these strategies. So we look for exciting new ideas.

With Avatar, if I created a creature with my designers for Avatar and I said it could see infrared or it could process the world five times faster than we can or it can emit or reflect ultraviolet so they can see each other flying around in the forest at night, you wouldn’t blink an eye. But when you think, “Oh, that’s a squirrel,” or “That’s a lizard,” something that we think of as familiar, all of a sudden, we’re seeing it in a completely different light, literally and figuratively. And I think that’s exciting.
It’s also about this less reverential style. This isn’t a stodgy, sort of classic natural history series with the narrator droning on. We’ve got Benedict Cumberbatch. He doesn’t just narrate it; he acts it. He gets you inside what’s happening in a way that I think is very relatable.
Super/Natural streams September 21 on Disney+. Avatar will re-release in theaters on September 23.

US stocks closed with a loss Tuesday as investors saw a stronger-than-expected report on service-sector activity as providing further reason for rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
The S&P 500 fell for a third straight session, led by losses in the consumer services and energy sectors. The decline was softened somewhat by gains among sectors considered defensive — real estate, utilities, and health care. Wall Street's major equity indexes have lost ground over the past three weeks.
Stocks gave up gains earlier Tuesday and Treasury yields rose after the Institute for Supply Management said its August index on service-sector activity rose to 56.9%. The reading outstripped Econoday's consensus estimate of 55.4% for activity that drives more than a third of US economic growth.
The Federal Reserve has indicated it sees the US economy slowing but strong enough to withstand more interest rate increases to pull down inflation toward its 2% target.
Here's where US indexes stood at the 4:00 p.m. closing bell on Tuesday:
"The combination of peak hawkishness from the Fed and the frustratingly slow pace at which inflation is cooling could continue to weigh on stocks for another month or more," LPL Financial strategists said in a note published Tuesday.
"Still, we could see potential upside for stocks over the balance of 2022. Some inflation relief is likely coming, which can help foster interest rate stability. Friday's jobs report that many are calling 'Goldilocks,' sets up some needed cooling of labor markets," they said.
Last Friday's jobs report showed the US added 315,000 payrolls in August, beating the forecast for 300,000 new jobs but down from July's scorching addition of 528,000 jobs.
Around the markets, Digital World Acquisition Corp. shares tumbled after the company gave its shareholders more time to vote on a proposal to extend a deadline to merge with Donald Trump's social media company. Truth Media & Technology Group runs the Truth Social networking app.
Nobel laureate Paul Krugman called for gradual interest-rate hikes to avoid crushing economic growth and employment.
Saudi Arabia is lowering oil prices for Asia and Europe but hiking them for most US buyers.
Oil prices tuned lower. West Texas Intermediate crude slipped 0.1% to $ 86.64 per barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 0.2% to $ 92.69.
Gold fell by 0.7% to $ 1,711.40 per ounce. The 10-year Treasury yield increased by 14 basis points to 3.33%.
Bitcoin fell 4.5% to $ 18,848.12.

Former President Donald Trump tore into Fox News on Sunday, accusing the network of amplifying the Democratic agenda and going harder on Republicans than Democrats.
"Wow! Fox News is really pushing the Democrats and the Democrat agenda. Gets worse every single day," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "So many Dems interviewed with only softball questions, then Republican counterparts get creamed."
It's unclear what interviews exactly Trump was referring to, but he also specifically called out Karl Rove, a former GOP White House official and Fox News contributor.
"RINO Karl Rove is unwatchable, very negative, and on all the time – Has a big record of losing! Not an easy place to be as a Republican, especially with all of the 'pervert' purchased ads," Trump said. It's unclear what ads he was referring to.
Rove served as a senior adviser and deputy chief of staff during the Bush administration in the 2000s. He has appeared on Fox News several times to discuss the Justice Department's investigation into Trump's handling of government records and the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago on August 8.
"None of these documents are his to have taken," Rove said last week, citing the Presidential Records Act.
While criticizing Fox News on Sunday, Trump also said that if the network's cable news competitor CNN adopted a conservative approach, he would support it.
"If 'low ratings' CNN ever went Conservative, they would be an absolute gold mine, and I would help them to do so!" Trump said of CNN, which he has frequently described as "failing" and "fake news."
Trump's comments about CNN come as the network appears to be shifting its strategy in order to attract a wider range of viewers.
On Friday, longtime CNN White House correspondent John Harwood abruptly parted ways with the network shortly after calling Trump a "dishonest demagogue" and saying the point made by President Joe Biden during his anti-MAGA speech on Thursday was "true."
Brian Stelter also had a sudden exit from CNN last month. Stelter, whose show "Reliable Sources" covered media, frequently criticized Fox News and right-wing outlets.
The shake ups come after Chris Licht took over as CEO of CNN earlier this year, following the departure of Jeff Zucker.
Several unnamed CNN employees and former staffers told The Washington Post they viewed the recent string of exits as evidence of Licht's plans to reposition CNN as an ideologically neutral network by limiting voices that are critical of Trump.
Representatives for Fox News and CNN did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

]]>A Republican senator who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee bought thousands of dollars-worth of stock in arms manufacturer Raytheon after pushing the Trump administration to approve massive hikes in defense spending.
Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma purchased between $ 50,000 and $ 100,000 of Raytheon stock last Tuesday – just days after news broke that US President Donald Trump had decided to back plans to request $ 750 billion from Congress for defense spending for the fiscal year 2020.
1. Sen. Inhofe pushed for record defense spending
2. Inhofe bought tens of thousands of stock in a defense contractor
3. Inhofe’s office was asked about the purchase
4. Inhofe dumped the stockhttps://t.co/DuZG6S9t9J— Citizens for Ethics (@CREWcrew) December 13, 2018
It seems that Inhofe was personally involved in the decision to hike the defense budget, too. When Trump suggested last week that he wanted to downsize parts of the US defense budget, Inhofe met with him and Defense Secretary James Mattis – a meeting which seems to have successfully convinced Trump to back increases in defense spending rather than cutbacks.
Inhofe’s communications director, Leacy Burke, told the Daily Beast, which first reported on the senator’s stock buy, that his financial transactions are “handled by a third-party advisor” and that he was not aware of the stock transaction. Burke said Inhofe had told his financial advisor to reverse the transaction when he learned of it. “This means that the transaction was canceled before it was settled; the Senator never took ownership of it,” she said.
The staffer also said Inhofe had written to his financial adviser instructing him not to buy anymore aerospace or defense stocks in future, given his position as the new chairman of the Armed Services Committee – but metadata on the letter provided by Burke showed that the letter was created less than 20 minutes after the Daily Beast contacted Inhofe’s office for comment on the stock purchase.
It appears that this was not the first time Inhofe owned stock in companies “within his direct legislative purview” either, the website reported. When he chaired the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee between 2015 and 2017, Inhofe owned stakes in multiple energy companies.
The stock buy has raised ethics concerns, with experts saying it highlights the conflict of interest that exists when elected officials’ financial interests are tied up in industries they have control over in the form of enacting or stopping legislation.

Trump warned of ‘disaster’ if he makes cuts to 2020 defense budget
Lawmakers are not allowed trade stock based on non-public information, but since the news of Trump’s defense spending request was already public, Inhofe’s short-lived Raytheon purchase would not have been classed as congressional insider trading, even if he had directed the purchase himself.
Still, one expert said the senator “likely has other nonpublic inside information, such as insight into what the final budget will look like and which industries stand to benefit.”

BY MANY measures, America’s economy is powering ahead. GDP is on track to grow at around 3% this year, and the unemployment rate is an impressively low 3.9%. For President Donald Trump, it is an unmissable opportunity to gloat. On September 10th he described the economy as “soooo good” and “perhaps the best in our country’s history”. But for others the very same figures present an economic puzzle.
The Federal Reserve has been raising its benchmark interest rate since December 2015, and will probably do so again this month, from a range of 1.75-2% to 2-2.25%. This is the central banker’s version of twiddling the bath taps, but on a national scale. It requires a delicate touch. Too much cold water, in the form of higher rates, will choke off demand and hence jobs. Too much hot, and rising inflation will eat away at people’s spending power. The aim is to find the perfect temperature, where employment is as high as it can be while inflation stays subdued.
But as Jerome…

An 18-year-old girl has been charged with reckless endangerment for pushing her 16-year-old friend off a 60-foot bridge in Washington state.
Prosecutors filed charges against Taylor Smith on Friday for pushing her friend, Jordan Holgerson, off Moulton Falls bridge earlier this month. Footage of the incident was uploaded to social media and quickly went viral.
Smith could face up to a year behind bars and a maximum fine of $ 5,000. Holgerson, who suffered six broken ribs and a punctured lung, said she would like her friend to “sit in jail” for what she did.
