Ford is pursuit rating all the things lately; it even applied the cop-readiness moniker to a Fusion hybrid earlier this year. Now comes a far different pursuit machine, based on the 2018 F-150. In both cases, the term “pursuit rated” is better viewed as a measure of each machine’s ability to slide into typical patrol duty more than any notion of chasing down baddies at triple-digit speeds. Besides, this F-150 can only reach 100 mph. Need we list the number of modern cars capable of 101?

As such, Ford rightly has positioned its latest creation to appeal to rural cops, fish-and-game outfits, and the border patrol. The truck’s 375-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and four-wheel drive make it perfect for towing up to 7000 pounds of, say, nautical patrol vehicles or for crawling around off-road. Its rugged steel frame, underbody skid plates, and FX4 off-road suspension should give it pothole- and curb-jumping abilities similar to those of other “pursuit rated” vehicles.

Other cop-specific items include a vinyl-covered rear seat that’s easily, er, washed, as well as special cloth front seats with anti-stab plates to protect front-seat officers from back-seat attackers. The gauge cluster includes engine-hour and idle-hour meters, the shifter is on the steering column, and a 240-amp alternator helps power the numerous lights and electronics used in modern police cars. To aid the F-150’s stopping and turning abilities, Ford fits upgraded brake calipers and pads and a new front anti-roll bar.

Just a word of warning: If you see one of these towing a boat for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, don’t assume they can’t pull you over for speeding. Just trust us on that one.

Ford introduced its latest police vehicle, the Ford F-150 Police Responder, today. It isn’t the first F-150 police vehicle ever, but it is the first one to achieve the same pursuit rating of other Ford police vehicles – including its Taurus- and Explorer-based Interceptors, and the new Fusion hybrid-based Police Responder Hybrid Sedan. What this means is that it’s fast enough for pursuits, and it can handle extended high-speed driving without risking overheating, reduced braking performance, or other mechanical issues. It also distinguishes it from the Expedition and F-150 SSV models that are already available, which are not pursuit-rated.

Under the hood is the familiar twin-turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 used in other F-150s and the Expedition. It makes 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, and will propel the truck to a limited top speed of 100 mph, which is 5 less than a civilian F-150. That engine is coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.

All Police Responder F-150s also come standard with the FX4 off-road package, which adds a locking rear differential, skid plates, and off-road tuned shocks. The shocks are also supplemented by a stiffer front anti-roll bar specific to the Police Responder. Upgraded brake calipers are fitted that can better handle heat, with reformulated pads.

The aluminum wheel and all-terrain tire package is also exclusive to the Responder. According to a Ford representative, aluminum wheels were acceptable because of the thicker tires. To complete the Police Responder package, a 240-amp alternator is fitted, along with redesigned cloth seats to allow for utility belts, steel-plates in the seat backs, and a column-mounted shifter. The shifter frees up space in the center console for equipment, and allows for quicker shifting.

It seems the term “pursuit rated” is losing its mojo lately, leading to so-called chase-ready cop cars such as the Ford 2.0-liter EcoBoost Taurus sedan and now this Fusion hybrid. Efficient, sure, but cool? No police chase worth its salt has ever been set to the soundtrack of whirring electric motors and an Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine.

So it is better to think of pursuit ratings as a metric of a car’s durability and endurance throughout the sort of hard use it might see in police hands, rather than as a stamp of approval for chasing down perps. The two agencies that evaluate cop cars’ bona fides, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Michigan State Police, apply these ratings to cars that can smack curbs at highish speeds, ford (no pun intended) deep puddles, and pull off sweet J-turns. To its credit, Ford’s 2.0-liter Taurus passed those tests, even though Ford didn’t advertise that specific Taurus for pursuit duty; the four-cylinder Taurus even managed to outaccelerate the long-defunct Ford Crown Victoria. As an aside, we hope the Crown Vic isn’t the baseline metric by which future pursuit vehicles are judged.

Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan

In any case, this Fusion hybrid, called the Ford Police Responder, is up to average patrol tasks with its heavy-duty suspension, underbody protection, neat steel wheels and cop tires, and “police tuned” brakes with massive 17-inch rotors. The interior, too, has been revised with seats friendly to cop utility belts, “anti stab” seatback protection, a rotary shift knob that upfitters can relocate from the center console to the dashboard, and a “pursuit mode” dashboard indicator.

Of course, the electric motor, the continuously variable automatic transmission, and the fuel-sipping four-cylinder gas engine are nowhere near as burly as the 365-hp twin-turbo V-6 available in the Taurus-based Ford Interceptor sedan. The combination is much more fuel-efficient, though—with Ford estimating it will earn a 38-mpg combined rating from the EPA—not to mention the hybrid’s ability to shut its engine off when the vehicle is stopped. This is where Ford expects the hybrid will sell itself: by offering fuel savings for police departments, with the added flexibility of using the efficient patrol cars for the occasional quick response or perhaps a low-speed chase. Unsurprisingly, the LAPD is among the first outfits to order the Fusion hybrid, being no stranger both to eco-consciousness and to high-profile, low-speed car chases like, say, one behind a white Ford SUV.

If you think of the number of police cruisers that a department like New York or Los Angeles has on the force, and the pressure government entities are under to reduce costs, something like this Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan makes a lot of sense. Ford claims it’ll return more than twice the EPA mileage (38 mpg combined) of the Taurus-based Police Interceptor equipped with a 3.7-liter V6.

This hybrid Ford Fusion couldn’t be more different than the old Crown Victoria-based Police Interceptors (that have been overtaken by the Taurus and Explorer police cruisers) – it’s front-wheel drive, unibody, and powered by a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine backed up by a single electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. If you’ll recall, the old Crown Vic was a very traditional (archaic, if you want to be snarky) body-on-frame, rear-drive car powered by a 4.6-liter V8. No fancy combustion cycles or crazy battery packs.

Now, some departments have been using hybrid police cars before, mainly for non-pursuit duties like parking enforcement and so forth. What’s new about the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, other than its awkward name, is the pursuit rating. That means it’s capable of handling the standard battery of police department tests to ensure it’s quick and tough enough to handle police pursuits. These tests include endurance at speed and the ability to ride over obstacles. Ford has calibrated the powertrain to allow it to run in battery-only mode up to 60 mph, and to allow for maximum performance (presumably at the expense of economy) whenever required.

Ford will debut the cars in New York and Los Angeles, so presumably those departments have already agreed to buy some. For everyone else, the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan will go on sale this spring and will be delivered next summer.
