Russian Border Guard ships have been chasing Ukrainian vessels that violated the border and were approaching Kerch Strait that separates Crimea from Russian mainland. The video taken from one of the Russian ships shows Ukraine’s artillery boats and a tugboat maneuvering dangerously closed to Russia’s vessels. The incident came as the Ukrainian Navy ships crossed into the Russian territorial sea without authorization, seeking to pass through the Kerch Strait. The actions of the Ukrainian vessels prompted the Russian border guards to intervene. Like this story? Share it with a friend!
The FSB, which is responsible for maintaining Russia’s borders, denounced the Ukrainian vessels’ actions as a deliberate provocation aimed at creating “conflict situations” in the region.
Two years later, as an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, Burton got a role acting alongside Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou in Roots, the TV miniseries. “They schooled me,” he said. He’d go on to act in Star Trek: The Next Generation and to host PBS’s Reading Rainbow.
I spoke to Burton recently about serving the greater community, his calling to the priesthood, and his advice for young people dealing with the challenges that can come with extraordinary success. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for length and clarity.
Lola Fadulu: You were born in Germany. How long did you live there?
LeVar Burton: We came back to the States when I was a year old, and then went again when I was in the third and fourth grade for another two years. So it is [my father’s] second tour of duty that I actually remember.
Fadulu: What do you remember about it?
Burton: Oh my gosh, I remember so many things. I remember our first apartment, which was what they called “on the economy,” which simply meant that it was in town. It wasn’t on the military base itself. This was the 1960s and the Allies had been in Germany since the end of World War II, so there was a constant influx of GIs and their families going there. I remember the beer man who came and delivered beer, just like they delivered milk.
Fadulu: Did your parents talk to you about their jobs often?
Burton: My mom talked a lot about not necessarily her job, but her belief that one’s life should be a service to the greater community. That was certainly something I picked up and absorbed. Most of the people in my family are in the field of education in one way or another. It’s kind of the family business. We are also a family that really values education, puts a very high premium on education and its value in society and for individuals. I personally believe that education is the key to freedom.
Actually, literacy is the key to freedom because you can educate yourself. But my mom didn’t talk a lot about her job, because she worked in a [federal program] that at that time was called AFDC. AFDC stood for Aid to Families With Dependent Children, so she worked with a lot of women who were then, as today, escaping situations that involved abuse, and she was really trying to help these women and their families get back on their feet after some catastrophic event that had obviously caused them to lose their balance. She didn’t talk about those cases specifically, because, No. 1, it was inappropriate because that’s confidential information and, No. 2, it wasn’t age-appropriate conversation either.
Fadulu: As a child, you were hearing about the importance of serving the greater community and of education. Did you ever push back on those life philosophies?
Burton: You did not push back where Irma Jean Christian was concerned. I’m sorry, that was just not an option. I don’t know how you were raised, but in my family, we did not push back on our mother. My first career choice was the Catholic priesthood.
Fadulu: Can you tell me a little bit about entering the seminary to become a priest?
Burton: It was all initiated by me. I had a calling. I felt like that’s how I was destined to spend my life, and so I took steps as early as I could in that direction, and my mom was very supportive. I entered the Catholic seminary at the age of 13 in Northern California. I began my formal training as an initiate into the order of the Society of the Divine Savior. I was there for four years. During my time there it actually shifted its focus from being solely a seminary to also being a college-preparatory program.
Fadulu: What is the most important thing you learned from your four years in seminary?
Burton: That I didn’t want to be a priest. I had a lay teacher who was neither a priest nor a brother who taught my favorite subjects, a man named Lee Bartlett. He was the English teacher, he was the drama coach, he also taught philosophy, and he opened up my mind to ways of looking at the world that were separate from the Catholic point of view, and a lot of it made sense to me. I had a lot of questions that the Catholic saints and the dogma of the Church could not answer. So I decided that I needed to find some other focus for my life at the ripe old age of 17.
[Jimmy O. Yang spent years getting ready for “Crazy Rich Asians.”]
Fadulu: How did you go about finding that other focus?
Burton: I sort of took inventory: What did I feel like I was good at? Where did I find some passion, some juice, in my life? And the answer was theater arts. It was the not-being-afraid-to-be-onstage part that I found I was good at. I had a natural affinity for acting and public speaking.
Fadulu: Were you nervous at all about finding a job in acting postgraduation or during your summers?
Burton: I wasn’t, no. I’m sure my mom was. But I had gone from wanting to be a priest to being an actor. I’m sure she had some concerns about both of those choices, but she never let on. She always showed a face of loving support.
Fadulu: Did you have any jobs in college?
Burton: No. My first day as a Bachelor of Fine Arts major in drama at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, they made an announcement: “If you want to be a B.F.A., if you want a Bachelor of Fine Arts major”—and there were only two places that really offered a B.F.A. in drama at the time, USC and Carnegie Mellon—“If you want to do this, then you’ve got to commit to it. You will not have time to hold down a part-time job. You will not have time to go out for a sport. You will not have time to join a fraternity or sorority. You will be spending every waking moment in these environments, and you will be busy.” And they were right. But before I went to USC, the two summers before, I worked at Mr. B’s Formal Wear in Sacramento, renting tuxedos to wedding parties and proms. I had to wear a tuxedo every day.
Fadulu: What was it like getting Roots in college?
Burton: Are you kidding me? My life was changed forever. My first day as an actor, Cicely Tyson played my mother, Maya Angelou played my grandmother. I was 19, and they embraced me as a peer. They schooled me. They certainly taught me what it meant to be a professional, but they assumed that because I was there I belonged there, and they treated me as such. It was an extraordinary experience for a young person.
Fadulu: What did they teach you about what it meant to be a professional?
Burton: So many things that it’s impossible to list. For instance, the importance of being on time; the importance of knowing your dialogue, knowing your lines; the importance of treating everybody with respect. Just things that they don’t teach you in college.
Fadulu: Do you have any advice or tips for young people who are dealing with the stresses of extraordinary success?
Burton: Extraordinary success at a young age is incredibly challenging. My advice would be to make knowing yourself, discovering yourself, and engaging in a rigorous process of introspection and personal growth your primary focus because it’s only through a foundation of knowing who you are that you’ll be able to maintain your balance in a very unstable and destabilizing career.

The history of British motorsport is well stocked with underdog stories, most famously those of the “garagista” upstarts who conquered Formula 1 in the 1960s and ’70s before remaking the sport in their own image. But the attempt of a small group of engineers based in Bristol to break the world land speed record—and take it to 1000 mph—is perhaps an even greater example of cheery optimism in the face of long odds.
–
It has been more than five years since we first told you about the Bloodhound project, and more than nine years since it began. That the team’s jet- and rocket-propelled car was meant to have achieved its 1000-mph goal in 2014 shows how far things have slipped. But last week Bloodhound ran under its own power for the first time, driven by Andy Green, 55, current holder of the land speed record at 763 mph. RAF fighter pilot Green set that mark in ThrustSSC on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in October 1997.
–
–
Twenty years later, the 200 mph that Bloodhound and Green achieved on a borrowed runway at Newquay, in the westernmost English county of Cornwall, is a scant percentage of what the team hopes to accomplish when it moves testing to South Africa. But it did give proof that the project possesses both life and undimmed ambition.
–
Still long and wedgy, the car has evolved steadily from preproduction renderings to reality, with a profusion of sponsors’ logos supplementing its blue and orange color scheme. (The Union flag on the tailfin also incorporates the names of more than 30,000 individual donors.) The basic concept remains unchanged, with a combination of jet and rocket power necessary for the more ambitious record attempts. Bloodhound will use both a Rolls-Royce EJ200 Turbofan borrowed from a Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft and rocket motors built by Norwegian company Nammo.
–
The rockets will burn high-test peroxide for the first record attempt—a goal set at a mere 800 mph—before the team switches to a brawnier hybrid rocket that will require the back end of the car to be redesigned for the attempts at a four-figure speed. The rocket side of the powertrain is still under development, and the runs at Newquay were exclusively under jet power and also on aircraft tires rather than the solid metal wheels the car will employ when it reaches the desert of the Northern Cape in South Africa.
–
It feels rude and un-British to turn the conversation to money, but funding has been the limiting factor in much of Bloodhound’s slipped schedule, with delays responsible for the departure of several of the earlier sponsors, including Jaguar. Back in 2014, we reported that the entire project was expected to cost around $ 28 million, but Ewen Honeyman, Bloodhound’s marketing director, said that getting to this point has cost $ 40 million at current exchange rates, and a similar amount will be needed to get to the 1000-mph target.
–
–
“That’s a lot of money, obviously,” he said at the test, “but compared to a Formula 1 budget, it’s modest. You could not run a team at the back of the grid for that.”
–
Mark Chapman, Bloodhound’s chief engineer, also reckons the publicity raised by getting the car moving will also help to raise funds more quickly. “There’s been a huge amount of interest from around the globe. We’re only running to 200 mph, 220 mph tops on the runway, but people really want to see what this car can do when we get it to the desert.”
–
Proof of Concept
–
Newquay, located on Cornwall’s north coast, is known as a low-price party town favored by students and also as one of the few spots in Blighty to offer surfable waves. The Newquay Cornwall Airport—a former Royal Air Force base, used by the U.S. Army Air Forces at the end of World War II—allowed its runway to be shut down for a couple of hours to allow Bloodhound to make a series of proving runs.
–
An impressive crowd made the long trek to see the car run, many of them the same individuals who have contributed to get their names on the tailfin. Early-morning fog raised concern—Green needed to be able to see through the tiny cockpit windscreen—but it cleared well before the allotted hour.
–
–
The test runs were slightly anticlimactic, certainly for anyone who has ever seen a jet-powered drag racer run. Bloodhound powered itself along the airfield’s long taxiways with the characteristic whine of an idling jet engine. On reaching the runway, it paused briefly before Green did what seemed to be a full-power launch, with cones of fire spitting from the jet engine’s afterburner. But the car had barely started moving before the engine sound dropped and it passed out of sight. The limiting factor here was stopping: It was on tires that are nearly 40 years old, the same as those fitted to the English Electric Lightning, a jet fighter the RAF retired from service in 1988. These same tires were used by the Thrust2 and ThrustSSC record cars in test runs on sealed surfaces, and although they can handle both speed and load, their braking performance is limited.
–
After another trip down the runway, the car returned to the staging area to be shut down and inspected. This wasn’t the first time it has moved under its own power—there was a trial run the week before the official event—but the 22 minutes that Green spent with the cockpit canopy closed is the longest time he has spent inside the car. He handled the public debriefing in his usual laconic style; Green is the man who barely seemed to break a sweat while simultaneously breaking the sound barrier and applying corrective steering lock in ThrustSSC. He admits that the jet engine’s response delay meant that even shutting off power at 130 mph saw the car continue to accelerate to 200 mph, and that he also wants some form of defogger for the windscreen.
–
Chapman admitted the acceleration came as something of a surprise, the car being run without its rocket engine, peroxide fuel, or the Jaguar V-8 that is currently the choice of powerplant for the rocket’s oxidizer pump. “The rate of acceleration surprised us all,” he said. “This is a five-ton car, and in Africa, when ready to do a record run, it will be an eight-ton car. It’s a lot more sprightly off the line.
–
“The thing we learned most is about the engine. We’ve got an intake for the jet engine that’s been designed to optimize at 800 mph, Mach 1.1, but we’ve shown that it works at far lower speeds. We’ve been able to apply full power pretty much from stationary. That’s better than we expected.”
–
–
The Jaguar V-8 is not guaranteed to be part of the final configuration. Chapman said his team is considering switching to an electric system for the oxidizer pump, which will need to deliver hundreds of gallons of peroxide fuel to the rocket engine.
–
“When we looked at this for the first time back in 2009, the battery technology wasn’t there. We’d have needed a half-ton or three-quarter-ton battery. Now we’re looking at what’s out there; it may well be that a few liters of [gasoline] and an automobile engine is still the best way to do it. But [this is] a great opportunity to show what an electric system could deliver—we need 600 horsepower for 25 seconds.”
–
By happy coincidence, Polestar—a subsidiary of Bloodhound’s current automotive partner Geely—has just announced a 600-horse electric powertrain for its forthcoming sports car. Chapman confirmed that discussions over its suitability have started.

A Steely-Eyed Focus on South Africa
–
–
Unsurprisingly, given the temporal slippage that has already occurred, Bloodhound’s senior team was unwilling to commit to a fixed schedule for the remainder of the project. Presuming funds are found, the first plan is to go to South Africa next year for jet-powered runs, up to around 600 mph, on the carefully prepared surface of the Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape. Development of the rocket engines will continue in parallel, with the ambition being that the first trip to Africa will unlock enough additional sponsorship cash to allow for a return in early 2019 to attempt to take the land speed record. If you’re a billionaire looking to help make history, this could be a good time to get involved.
–
–
–
–
–
“We’re going to need a bit of help,” said Honeyman, “but we’re very confident that we’ll get there in the end.”

Emma Watson is pursuing legal action after dozens of her private photos were reportedly stolen and leaked online.
The “Beauty and the Beast” actress’ spokesman said the images aren’t nude photographs, but instead show the star trying on clothes.
“Photos from a clothes fitting Emma had with a stylist a couple of years ago have been stolen,” her spokesperson said in a statement obtained by Variety, and original reported by BBC News. “They are not nude photographs. Lawyers have been instructed and we are not commenting further.”
Watson, a UN Women goodwill ambassador, was also threatened in 2014 with a leak of nude images after delivering a speech on gender equality.
Two men — one from Pennsylvania and the other from Chicago — were recently sentenced in connection with the 2014 celebrity nude photo hack. Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, and Kate Upton were among the actresses who fell victim to the iCloud hack.

]]>During the interview, CBS host Anderson Cooper challenged Le Pen with questions such as, “You don’t believe Russia’s a threat for Europe?” while raising the familiar “Crimea invasion” argument against Moscow.
The right-wing French presidential candidate dismissed the “Russian threat” claims as a “big scam,” saying she doesn’t believe in it “at all.”
“I’ll tell you what the danger is for Europe. It’s carrying out a Cold War against Russia and pushing Russia into China’s arms. That’s the threat to Europe,” Le Pen emphasized.
Asked if she regards Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a threat,” Le Pen was quick to deny the claim.
“No, I don’t believe it is so. Nothing Vladimir Putin has done would make me reach that conclusion.”
Le Pen went on to discuss growing globalization, which, according to her, “has become an ideology with no constraints,” leading to “nations forcing themselves back into the debate.”
“Nations with borders we control, with people that we listen to, with real economies, not Wall Street economies, but rather factories and farmers. And this goes against this unregulated globalization, wild, savage globalization,” which has been “a catastrophe for most,” Le Pen said.
A steady stream of migrants is part of this issue, she added.
“France’s image has undeniably changed. There are a number of neighborhoods where you are no longer living a French life. That’s undeniable.”
However, this will stop if she becomes president, Le Pen said.
“France isn’t burkinis on the beach. France is Brigitte Bardot. That’s France. I’m opposed to wearing headscarves in public places. That’s not France. There’s something I just don’t understand: the people who come to France, why would they want to change France, to live in France the same way they lived back home?”
Asked if she would agree with a motto like “Make France great again,” mimicking Donald Trump’s “Make America great again,” Le Pen said: “Yes, of course. I’ve been saying that for many years. We are a great nation, which has lot to offer to the world, but to offer something to the world France has to remain France.”
CBS host Cooper seemed to have his doubts about Le Pen’s potential presidency, saying: “The polls say you can’t win.”
Le Pen quickly fired back by saying: “Yes. They also said that Brexit wasn’t going to happen, that Donald Trump wasn’t going to be elected, wasn’t even going to be his party’s nominee. Well, they’re saying that less and less now. They are much more cautious.”
The French presidential elections take place on April 23, with the run-off scheduled for May 7. In the latest polls, centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron is projected to beat Le Pen in the run-off, with 60 percent of the votes in his favor. However, National Front leader Le Pen is predicted to get 27 percent of the vote in the first round, while Macron is forecast to come in second with 24 percent.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is pursuing at least three separate probes relating to alleged Russian hacking of the U.S. presidential elections, according to five current and former government officials with direct knowledge of the situation.
While the fact that the FBI is investigating had been reported previously by the New York Times and other media, these officials shed new light on both the precise number of inquires and their focus.
The FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, which runs many cyber security investigations, is trying to identify the people behind breaches of the Democratic National Committee’s computer systems, the officials said. Those breaches, in 2015 and the first half of 2016, exposed the internal communications of party officials as the Democratic nominating convention got underway and helped undermine support for Hillary Clinton.
The Pittsburgh case has progressed furthest, but Justice Department officials in Washington believe there is not enough clear evidence yet for an indictment, two of the sources said.
Meanwhile the bureau’s San Francisco office is trying to identify the people who called themselves “Guccifer 2” and posted emails stolen from Clinton campaign manager John Podesta’s account, the sources said. Those emails contained details about fundraising by the Clinton Foundation and other topics.
Beyond the two FBI field offices, FBI counterintelligence agents based in Washington are pursuing leads from informants and foreign communications intercepts, two of the people said.
This counterintelligence inquiry includes but is not limited to examination of financial transactions by Russian individuals and companies who are believed to have links to Trump associates. The transactions under scrutiny involve investments by Russians in overseas entities that appear to have been undertaken through middlemen and front companies, two people briefed on the probe said.
Reuters could not confirm which entities and individuals were under scrutiny.
Scott Smith, the FBI’s new assistant director for cyber crime, declined to comment this week on which FBI offices were doing what or how far they had progressed.

The White House had no comment on Friday on the Russian hacking investigations. A spokesman pointed to a comment Trump made during the campaign, in which he said: “As far as hacking, I think it was Russia, but I think we also get hacked by other countries and other people.”
During a news conference Thursday, President Donald Trump said he had no business connections to Russia.
The people who spoke to Reuters also corroborated a Tuesday New York Times report that Americans with ties to Trump or his campaign had repeated contacts with current and former Russian intelligence officers before the November election. Those alleged contacts are among the topics of the FBI counterintelligence investigation.
