Game of Thrones season 8: Arya Stark’s weapon’s purpose revealed in season 6 clue? https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2019 12:04:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/

The first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones saw Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) give Gendry (Joe Dempsie) a drawing of the weapon she wanted.

The drawing showed a staff Arya wanted to be able to break into two parts, complete with a spear made from Dragonglass at one end and another blade at the other.

The second instalment saw the blacksmith present her with it, and some fans have been reminded of another weapon Arya has dealt with.

As fans of the HBO series will remember, Arya went to join the Faceless Men in season five where she met the Waif (Faye Marsay).

The Waif carried a staff that she used to hit Arya with and the Stark girl also learned to fight with it herself.

Fans have pointed out the resemblance between Gendry’s creation and the staff used by the Waif.

“Arya’s new weapon seems… familiar,” wrote Reddit user RonnieBear87 alongside a photo of the Waif holding the weapon.

Arya was blinded as she fought the Waif with the staff and some viewers think this is why she may have ordered Gendry to make her something with a similar design.

The Battle of Winterfell is approaching and it’s likely Arya could be blinded by the elements if a blizzard sets in.

On top of that, if she finds herself in total darkness, Arya has the skills to defend herself due to her experience.

She ultimately managed to kill the Waif because she lured her to her hideout in the sixth season and cut out the lights.

One fan replied to the theory suggesting it could be foreshadowing a fight in the blackout for Arya and a White Walker.

Reddit user ProgrammerNextDoor asked: “Is this foreshadowing her fighting some white walker in the dark?”

While BigBacon87 theorised: “She’s gonna lead the white walkers into the crypt and then it’s lights out.”

After Gendry handed the weapon over to Arya, the situation took a steamy turn.

Microsoft has changed the name of its venture capital (VC) fund from Microsoft Ventures to M12, two years after its official launch. The Microsoft Ventures name actually predates the VC arm by a few years, and it was used as an overarching term for Microsoft’s accelerator programs, which did include some seed-funding initiatives. Leon McCarron

One cart, two adventurers, and a desire to replicate explorer Wilfred Thesiger’s 1940s journey across the Arabian sands. Our featured contributor Leon McCarron describes his own 46 days in the wilderness with fellow adventurer Alastair Humphreys.

“Hunger, thirst, heat and cold; I had tasted them in full …”

So wrote the English explorer and great traveler Wilfred Thesiger in his book Arabian Sands, which details the journey he took in the 1940s across the Rub ‘al Khali, or Empty Quarter—the world’s largest sand desert, taking up most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula.

Thesiger’s name is synonymous with British exploration and immersive travel. He spent years living with the local nomadic Bedouin tribes, criss-crossing the Arabian Peninsula, and traveled 1000 miles from Salalah on the south coast of Oman to the then-small fishing village of Dubai, perhaps his greatest journey of all.

And so it was in the autumn of 2012 that I received an email with all the eccentricity of Thesiger himself—if not necessarily the poetry:

“Hi Leon. Hypothetically speaking, would you be interested in another long walk. 6-8 weeks. Desert. Pulling a cart. Home for Christmas.”

A friend of Al’s welded together a basic cart. And we took it, in earnest, to trial on the British landscape that most replicates a desert. That is, of course, a beach. Conditions were less than ideal: It was October, it was raining, and we pulled our prototype across damp sand under the watchful eye of an enormous inflatable gorilla from a nearby fun park.

RELATED: Is walking the most adventurous way to travel?

What was clear was that our design was terrible: In an effort to prepare for both the sand and gravel we’d encounter, we had mounted four rugged tires, but they were much too thin. What was also clear was we’d run out of time. Once back home, we hastily doubled the surface area with four more wheels, and flew to Oman with 50 kilograms (110 lbs) of disassembled steel girders in a cardboard box.

Thesiger wrote that he traveled, “ … to find peace in the hardship of desert travel, and the company of desert peoples.” And it was this latter aspect that had the most lasting impact upon him. It was not in the same place, but we found the same hospitality nonetheless.

RELATED: This man walked across Thailand in half a day

Once we crossed the ring of mountains that encircle Salalah, we headed for the ‘Lost City of Ubar’ which, disappointingly, was signposted—it was re-discovered by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who shares more than a few character traits with Thesiger. From there, we finally entered the Empty Quarter, albeit carefully. We couldn’t go too close to the border with Saudi Arabia as we weren’t granted permission to enter.

In the time that’s lapsed between Thesiger’s journey and ours, oil was discovered on the Arabian Peninsula. And the land was changed forever. Now, partly to facilitate the industry, a road delineates the fringes of the desert; and Al and I crossed it more regularly than we might have hoped. Indeed, we even traveled along it occasionally, wondering what Thesiger would have made of two idiots walking along tarmac in a desert pulling a glorified shopping trolley.

We walked long distances—sometimes upwards of 30 miles a day—because there was little to distract us. There were no weather patterns to predict nor remonstrate over, save the occasional sandstorm, and there was little to see other than more of the same sand and gravel that occupied our every waking moment. Yet we were not bored. A journey like this encourages attention to detail, and we began to notice how the texture beneath our feet gradually changed, and how the earth occasionally rose, almost imperceptibly, from perpetual flatness to great, towering dunes sculpted by the wind.

Every now and then, we met oil workers in the desert, and thus our wilderness trip became pockmarked with wondrous, spontaneous social interactions. We met Omanis and Syrians and Egyptians; Indians and Americans and Filipinos. Some offered us cold drinks from their trucks; one passer-by even gave us ice cream. Surely there is no greater gift to receive than the unsolicited kindness of strangers. Especially in the form of ice cream in the desert.

When we eventually reached Dubai, we had been walking for 46 days without changing our clothes. We tramped in along an eight-lane freeway, necks craned skyward in awe of the alien landscape all around. We couldn’t have found a greater juxtaposition if we tried. Our endpoint was atop the Burj al-Khalifa—the tallest building in the world—where we stared out over the vast swathes of desert that surround this fabricated oasis of glitz and glamor.

When I look back at this journey, I’m amazed at how inexpensive it was. We spent less than USD $ 1000 (£715) each. It was an expedition characterized by good humor at every turn and this, let’s not forget, is the Middle East. Oman is about as safe and welcoming a country as I’d ever visited, and that too is worth highlighting.

Above all, it felt like adventure in its purest form. It was silly, sure, but it was the unpredictability and self-inflicted hardships that made it so memorable. I like to think that Thesiger, while he would have rightly thought we were chancers, might just have had a sly smile to himself by the end.

How to Find the Purpose of Life (A Case Study of a High-Powered Woman) https://briefnews.eu/how-to-find-the-purpose-of-life-a-case-study-of-a-high-powered-woman-4/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-find-the-purpose-of-life-a-case-study-of-a-high-powered-woman-4/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 06:50:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-find-the-purpose-of-life-a-case-study-of-a-high-powered-woman-4/

As a mindset and performance coach, I help people achieve Success that Matters®. My clients create high performance in what matters most to them, resulting in a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment. I’m going to share with you the transformation of a recent client and how you can use these same strategies to create a life of purpose and find your true meaning of life.

How to find the purpose of life and live a fulfilling life

“Ding,” my phone beeped at me, signaling a new potential coaching client had filled out my pre-interview questionnaire. She was successful in her career and enjoyed the challenge of her work. But like many of my ambitious clients, she was struggling to balance her work and her personal life. She started to feel lost about her goals in life.

This is how I met her, Jenny (alias), a high-powered career woman.

Jenny’s career had gradually crept all over her calendar, and she was trying to cram her personal life around the edges. From the time she woke up in the morning until going to bed, emails marked ‘urgent’ from colleagues and clients flooded her inbox. She spent a lot of time putting out fires and responding to the demands of others. Her self-care had dwindled. She had little time to nurture her most important relationships with family and friends.

She was feeling overwhelmed with her never-ending to-do list and was wondering if the life she imagined living was even possible.

During her interview call with me, I knew I could help her. I’ve helped hundreds of high achievers with the struggles she faced, and was confident that 8 weeks later her life would look much different.

And it did.

The positive results 8 weeks later

In our weeks together, she achieved the following results:

  • Achieved her ideal work-life rhythm (without sacrificing her career success)
  • Began an exercise habit
  • Created time to nurture new friendships
  • Streamlined her workflow in her career and personal life
  • Created the space to realize a big dream and make an action plan to achieve it
  • Defined success on her terms and built her life around what matters most to her
  • Felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment

Here is a breakdown of the 4 strategies I used with Jenny. You, too, can use these strategies to find your purpose of life and your sense of significance.

1. Define your true priorities and eliminate false objectives

To live your extraordinary life, you’ll need to live YOUR life, not somebody else’s.

Often, we live our lives how others want us to live. We build our daily habits and schedules around what our families, friends, and society want for us. We are a product of our surroundings.

It takes guts to live your life according to your true priorities, especially when your priorities differ from the people around you. When you have the courage to build your life around what matters most to you, you live authentically and your days become filled with a stronger sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Remember:

In today’s high-pressure, crazy-busy world, it is very easy to stray away from your true priorities and build a life around false objectives. False objectives are the goals you’re working toward that don’t align with what matters most to you and the person you most want to be.

For some people, climbing the corporate ladder is a false objective because they desire more than anything to take some time away from their career to stay home with their young kids. For others, having a large home mortgage is a false objective, because they would love the freedom to travel the world.

In order to feel fulfilled, it’s important to closely evaluate your life and be 100% honest with yourself on the following questions:

  • What matters most to you?
  • What false objectives are you working toward?

It’s important to identify and eliminate the false objectives in your life. When you eliminate the false objectives, you begin focusing your life on what matters most to you; and, it gives you the space to create your authentic, extraordinary life.

2. Develop a crystal-clear vision of the life you desire

As you define your true priorities, you can start developing a vision for the life you desire.

How will you build your life around your priorities?

Write down everything you can think of about the life you desire. Then work on believing it’s possible to achieve it. This can be really difficult, but it’s crucial.

If traveling is one of your biggest priorities, and you deeply desire to create a freedom-based career with a laptop lifestyle allowing you to work from anywhere in the world, you’ll need to believe it’s possible. If deep down you believe that it’s not possible for you to break free from the 9-5 in the cubicle, you won’t take the steps necessary to break free from the office.

If you say writing is very important to you and your biggest ambition is to become a New York Times bestselling author, but deep down you believe that you’ll never finish writing your book, the actions you take every day are going to align with your disbelief. When you’re not feeling motivated to write, you won’t. When you’re feeling defeated, you’ll quit.

What you believe about yourself–and what you believe is possible for yourself–affects how you show up every day to achieve your biggest goal.

Get clear about the life you desire, and work on believing it’s possible to achieve it.

3. Create a plan to achieve your vision

Let’s use the bestselling author example again.

If your biggest ambition is to become a New York Times bestselling author, because you want to write about a topic that matters a lot to you and make a difference in the lives of many with your words, you’ll need a plan to achieve that vision.

Hope is not a strategy. You’ll need a plan.

You’ll need to develop a writing habit. You’ll need to research how to get published. You’ll need to learn how to effectively market the book or how to hire somebody to market it for you.

Create a specific plan and give yourself deadlines to achieve it.

4. Deal with resistance effectively

Every day, when you are working on building your life around your true priorities and your big vision, you’ll face resistance. Your life will probably look something like this:

This resistance occurs in many forms including:

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Fear of standing out from the crowd
  • Fear that what you believe is possible maybe isn’t really possible for you
  • Feeling tired or unmotivated
  • Distractions
  • Interruptions

You will be bombarded every day with many things that attempt to distract you away from your true priorities.

It’s important to run YOUR race, live YOUR life, focus on what matters to YOU, and build your life around YOUR vision.

You’ll face a lot of resistance, and it’s important to have strategies in place to deal with your resistance effectively, so you’re able to stay on track even during tough times.

Follow those steps and everything changes

When you’re clear about what you truly desire and what matters most to you, and you develop a plan to achieve your big vision, everything changes.

You feel more focused and you make decisions that align with your true priorities.

You find the purpose of life.

You show up with more passion and enthusiasm.

You build your life around what matters most to you, and life becomes very fulfilling.

The 42-year-old became a topic of conversation last year for his repeated use of the word “fiyah” to describe something he liked the sound of.

However, fans of the Black Eyed Peas frontman will be disappointed to hear that this season will not feature the same sort of catchphrases.

Speaking at the launch for The Voice UK 2018, Will told Express.co.uk: “That was retired. I think I overdid ‘fiyah’ last season… that was 2017.

“That’s my fear that I will be the catchphrase guy so I wanted not to do that.

“It’s on purpose, like a boycott – I’m boycotting my catchphrase!”

will.i.am has been on The Voice since it launched in the UK back in 2011 and has admitted that he is looking past the show now when searching for the next big thing.

When asked what he wants to find this year, the rapper was resolved, saying: “This year I’m listening to voices that will sound good on the stuff on my hard drive.

“I’ve got songs from John Legend, David Guetta and I keep listening for voices that will sound good on them.

“I’m going for result-orientated… past the show.”

The Voice UK returns to ITV this Saturday at 8pm.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

What is the purpose of tax reform? https://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-purpose-of-tax-reform/ https://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-purpose-of-tax-reform/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 10:56:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-purpose-of-tax-reform/ IF MAKING America great again is the aim, you could do worse than bring back the economic growth rates of the late 1990s. President Donald Trump’s team reckons that the Republican tax plan making its way through Congress will do just that. “We are creating a model that creates economic growth in this country,” says Gary Cohn, the director of Mr Trump’s National Economic Council. Kevin Hassett, who runs the Council of Economic Advisers, reckons the bill should push growth above 4% per year.

Such heights are not beyond the realm of possibility, but if America reaches them tax reform will have little to do with it. That is not because of the specifics of the plan. Rather, it reflects an underappreciated reality: tax reform can accomplish many things, but raising long-run growth is not generally among them.

Most assessments of the Republican tax proposals, like most analyses of most tax plans, conclude their effects on growth will be small. The Penn Wharton Budget Model, a non-partisan public-policy initiative, projects that GDP in 2027 will be between 0.4% and 0.9% higher as a result of the bill.

Nonsense, say the adherents of the supply-side school of thinking. Economic growth can be broken down into changes in the supply of labour and in labour productivity. Supply-siders reckon that lower tax rates on labour income should raise its supply; lower…
