We see Elisabeth Moss’ punk musician Becky Something rock out on stage before we ever hear her talk or watch her terrorize her entourage. It’s a simple yet important introductory gesture from writer/director Alex Ross Perry to kick off Her Smell. The song establishes the character’s performative flair prior to launching headfirst into the maelstrom she unleashes, providing crucial understanding for why her “business family” stands by her. Addicts, particularly talented ones, can draw people in with the allure of the very same narcissism that will later repel them.

Perry’s film, depicting five one-location scenes playing out in apparent real-time, recalls a more theatrical structure than a filmic one – Shakespearean, even, if you’re inclined to believe the film’s introduction at the New York Film Festival. The first three scenes comprise something of a “pre-intermission” first act with Moss’ Becky nearing total implosion under the weight of artistic frustration, substance abuse and general vanity. Cinematographer Sean Price Williams restlessly follows her as well as the coterie of bandmates, family members and other executives who manage to withstand her toxicity. It is they who manage to keep the entire group, Something She, from total combustion.

Yet nothing about this tightly wound backstage drama feels overly stagey. Perry’s creation is wholly cinematic making full use of the intimacy and claustrophobia that films provide so well. Her Smell gives Damien Chazelle’s First Man a serious run for its money as the fall festival film most likely to cause motion sickness with its furious camera movements and jarring editing. It’s all amplified by top-notch sound design that plants a low rumble underneath Becky’s reign of terror, like a brewing thunderstorm that’s about to unleash all hell on everyone below.

None of the bravura filmmaking would have the same stinging impact were it not for Elisabeth Moss. Her fierce, tormented performance is not afraid to lean into her bandmate Mari’s (Agyness Deyn) description of Becky – to know her is to come to hate her. It’s not your average self-destructive character, in part because Moss plays Becky with such propulsive energy that she remains blithely unaware of the damage left behind on her war path. Becky does not exist on some arbitrary continuum of “likeable” and “unlikeable” because Moss blows up that spectrum altogether. She simply charges forward the only way her character knows how and lets the trail of tears and blood speak for itself.

It seems a bit beside the point to speculate about whether or not Moss played Becky with sympathy because it’s not what Alex Ross Perry aims for in Her Smell – at least, not explicitly. Compassion for Becky comes as an organic byproduct of the honest in Moss’ portrayal. We have to see her at rock bottom to fully feel the film’s “post-intermission” second act as Becky claws her way toward redemption and recovery. The pivot from visceral to emotional works as well as it does because Moss captures the full range of experience her character endures.

In one of the film’s most affecting moments, Perry pushes the camera in slowly on Becky’s face as she watches a group of her acolytes perform in front of her. In the shot, Moss shows amusement, jealousy, anger, resentment – a full battery of contradictory sensations she won’t let herself slow down to sort out. Only when Becky begins to take a step back from the chaos of her life, even going so far as to refer to herself in third person so she can separate person from persona, can she take proper emotional inventory of her life. From this vantage point, she can finally appreciate the enormity of sacrifices made by everyone from her bandmates to her ex (Dan Stevens) to her manager (Eric Stoltz).

To Alex Ross Perry’s credit, this portion of Her Smell never reeks of cheap sentimentality, which is especially remarkable given the cynicism of his previous downbeat dramedies. It’s a fully authentic conclusion to a story of a prodigious musician’s precipitous fall and subdued rebirth. Great talents attract good people into their orbit, and those supporters do not simply fall out when the going gets tough. Accomplished musicians endure thanks to the resilience of their boosters.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we learn how to live forever, get a retrospective of one of this generation’s most celebrated music producers who isn’t named Diddy, get queer as punk, find out where creativity comes from by just asking the question, and spend some quiet time with Uwe Boll.

Quincy

Directors Alan Hicks and Rashida Jones have created a documentary on Rashida’s father, the legendary music producer Quincy Jones. Watching this trailer, I’m struck by just how influential Jones has been in the music industry. No matter how much the market has evolved, no matter how much tastes have changed, Quincy has always been able to be a dominant force. I’m eager to hear the story and am genuinely interested if this will be the Oscar contender people are saying it could be or will it paint a flattering portrait of the artist and go easy on the more rougher edges of the man who has launched so many careers? Either way, this looks incredible.

Ad Vitam

When we last were talking about actress Garance Marillier, it had everything to do with her breakout role in Raw. This new series, from writer/director Thomas Cailley, who brought us 2014’s critically lauded Love at First Fight, is a mind scrambler. The synopsis is below:

A new regeneration process allows human beings to live forever, but when a number of teenage suicides rock the seemingly evergreen population, a hard-boiled detective must enlist the help of a rebellious 20-something to uncover the truth behind what happened.

This trailer enchants you into its universe and with its premise. But then, as with all good sci-fi, there’s the catch that shakes the entire foundation. To see how, on the one hand, there is the ability to live forever, and, on the other, there are those who want to end it all, it’s compelling. The trailer expertly bobs and weaves through the narrative while being gorgeous to look at and listen to because, by the end, I had goosebumps just wondering where this all would end. I hope the series is a fraction as good as this trailer.

Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution

As movements go, this one was pretty incredible. Director Yony Leyser, who directed 2010’s William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, is here with a documentary looks back to the 1980s punk scene. Specifically, Leyser delves into how punk became a backdoor for many of those within the LGBTQ community. To wit:

Started in the 1980s as a fabricated movement intended to punk the punk scene, Queercore quickly became a real-life cultural community of LGBTQ music and movie-making revolutionaries. From the start of the pseudo-movement to the widespread rise of pop artists who used queer identity to push back against gay assimilation and homophobic punk culture, ‘Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution’ is just that: a how-to-do-it guide for the next generation of queer radicals.

I love how rough this trailer feels. Immediately you get why this took off the way it did within the community. For decades there was this megaphone of media and popular thought about how homosexuality was to be thought of, dealt with, or suppressed by the cis overlords who were in control of the message. Here was this outlet, then, this empowering and powerful conduit through which frustration and raw emotion flowed free. It’s punk for sure.

Why Are We Creative?

This is just nutty. Director Hermann Vaske was a dude who spent 30 years getting in front of people like David Bowie, Bono, Quentin Tarantino, Stephen Hawkins, Wim Wenders, so many others, and just asked them the question of why they are creative. After that, he seems to just sit back and listens intensely to the response. It’s brilliant, to be honest. For those of us who don’t care what it was like to work with so-and-so or whether they can confirm a rumor having to with this or that, this gets to the heart of everything and the trailer is impressive. While it seems like it would be cringy to wait patiently for a response to this heady question the interview subject’s response ends up being kind of fascinating. There is no “gotcha” to any of this but, rather, a frank exploration into the minds of those who have created something as to why they do it.  (via Screen Daily)

F**k You All: The Uwe Boll Story

Hoo boy. I don’t think you could make a more accurate title for a documentary dealing with director Uwe Boll. I remember a long time ago when it was the stuff of movie blog headlines to revel in the critical tug-of-war between critics who would bash Boll’s cinematic efforts with the kind of glee only reserved for pinata parties. Boll’s responses, too, to that pelting was just as satisfying. From the videos he made to the boxing ring antics where critics did put up their dukes to face the man 1-on-1, Boll has always been a sideshow. Director Sean Patrick Shaul, then, seems to have channeled that energy to create a retrospective of the man who has nearly all but disappeared from our daily film news cycle. The trailer is nothing short of fantastic concerning the people he has participating in this, as well as the man himself, who looks all but too delighted to revel in his past behaviors.

Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers for possible inclusion in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

‘Her Smell’ Teaser: Elisabeth Moss is a Punk Rocker Who Hits Bottom in Alex Ross Perry’s Latest https://briefnews.eu/her-smell-teaser-elisabeth-moss-is-a-punk-rocker-who-hits-bottom-in-alex-ross-perrys-latest/ https://briefnews.eu/her-smell-teaser-elisabeth-moss-is-a-punk-rocker-who-hits-bottom-in-alex-ross-perrys-latest/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 14:58:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/her-smell-teaser-elisabeth-moss-is-a-punk-rocker-who-hits-bottom-in-alex-ross-perrys-latest/ her smell teaser

When Elisabeth Moss and Alex Ross Perry team up together, you know you’re in for a hell of a performance from Moss. The pair first collaborated on 2015’s psychological thriller Queen of Earth, and now they’re reuniting for the maniacal rocker drama Her Smell.

Now, ahead of the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, you can get a glimpse at Moss’ no-holds-barred performance as a punk rocker hitting rock bottom in theHer Smell teaser clip.

Her Smell Teaser

With glitter smeared on her cheeks and smudged kohl lining her eyes, Elisabeth Moss looks like a punk rock diva from hell, as she rants and raves to a captive audience backstage after a show. The brief scene follows Becky mid-breakdown backstage, filmed in extreme close-ups that serve to unsettle and unbalance you — a staple of Ross Perry’s style.

Moss stars in Her Smell as Becky Something, a self-destructive rock star whose relationships with her bandmates, family, and fans suffer during her years-long war against alcoholism. She finds inspiration again when she becomes the mentor to a rising all-female band The Akergirls, but begins to crack under the pressure to succeed when her former bandmate begins to rise to stardom and she begins to fade into obscurity.

Moss gave a revelatory performance in her last collaboration with Ross Perry, but judging by what we’ve seen of Her Smell,  this latest film could easily top that. “[T]his was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Moss said in an interview ahead of the film’s TIFF premiere. “It was not fun a lot of the time. It was hard to be in that head space, and hard to be in that person, with all that chaos and craziness. Some things are more fun to play than others. And this was difficult. At the end, I was incredibly fulfilled and happy that I’d done the role. But when we were shooting it, it was not easy.”

Her Smell also stars Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard.

Here is the official synopsis for Her Smell:

The latest from Alex Ross Perry traces the psychology of an unforgettable woman under the influence. Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss, in a powerhouse performance), the influential lead singer of a popular ’90s alt-rock outfit, struggles with her demons as friends, family, and bandmates alike behold her unraveling through a prism of horror, empathy, and resentment. Perry tracks Becky’s self-destruction—and potential creative redemption—through snaking long takes (arguably some of DP Sean Price Williams’s finest work) in claustrophobic backstage hallways, garishly lit dressing rooms, and recording studios, and the film’s ensemble cast (including Cara Delevingne, Ashley Benson, Amber Heard, Virginia Madsen, Dan Stevens and Eric Stoltz) is impeccable in support of Moss’s rattling trip to the brink.

Dramatic video footage has captured the moment the lead singer of the punk rock band ‘Social Distortion’ allegedly attacked a supporter of US President Donald Trump during a live performance.

Local man Tim Hildebrand says the violent confrontation took place after frontman Mike Ness started bad-mouthing Trump at a concert in the Ace of Spades music venue in Sacramento, California.

The Republican took umbrage with the singer’s political remarks and he made his feelings known with an insulting hand gesture. “I stood pretty much with my silent protest with my middle finger up for the next two songs,” Hildebrand told CBS.

That act inflamed the situation further and before long Ness and Hildebrand allegedly came to blows. Video footage from the scene shows the singer remonstrating with Hildebrand from the stage before removing his guitar and launching himself into the crowd to confront the farmer.

Hildebrand says he was left with two black eyes, a busted lip and a concussion after the fight. “I wasn’t able to defend myself because people in the crowd were holding me back,” he said.

He was then removed from the venue by security officers. When outside he reported the confrontation to Sacramento police, which confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

“Someone that has the status that he does shouldn’t get away with assaulting someone,” Hildebrand added. “If he wants to have a talk someday, man to man, I would love that but he would have to not be a child about it.”

LOS ANGELES—The first Rage didn’t generate much buzz amongst fans of first-person shooters when it shipped in 2010, but one of id Software’s later titles (the 2016 Doom reboot) made a big splash. With Rage 2, publisher Bethesda is hoping that some of the post-Doom goodwill can elevate this low-profile franchise to popularity.

The publisher partnered id’s FPS veterans with Avalanche Studios (Just Cause, Mad Max) to make this sequel open world. The first game had a veneer that made it look open-world, even though it was just as enclosed as Doom.

I played Rage 2 at Bethesda’s E3 booth this week, and unfortunately I can only judge the id Software side of that partnership. The demo I played was a linear, corridor-crawling action shooter experience with no open-world aspects. When I asked a Bethesda rep why that was, he told me that the company wanted Rage fans to be sure that the gunplay is still just as good even though the game is going open world. I think it’s more likely that the open-world part of the full game (which is slated to launch in spring 2019) just isn’t ready to be played yet.

The pictures she captured are an invaluable history of the time (and they’re pretty great-looking to boot). Here are some highlights:

‘How to Talk to Girls at Parties’ Trailer: Your Average Story of British Punk Boy Meets Curious Alien Girl https://briefnews.eu/how-to-talk-to-girls-at-parties-trailer-your-average-story-of-british-punk-boy-meets-curious-alien-girl/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-talk-to-girls-at-parties-trailer-your-average-story-of-british-punk-boy-meets-curious-alien-girl/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 15:01:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-talk-to-girls-at-parties-trailer-your-average-story-of-british-punk-boy-meets-curious-alien-girl/ How to Talk to Girls at Parties Trailer

As someone reading a movie website, you’ve surely seen a coming of age romance here and there. And you’ve probably seen an alien invasion movie as well. But now they’re about to combine in a sexy, punk acid trip of a movie in the form of an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s short story and graphic novel How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

The first trailer just arrived, and it looks like a wild, charming genre mash-up that should be a hell of a good time at the movies this summer.

Watch the How to Talk to Girls at Parties Trailer

Set during the glorious days of punk rock and revolution in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s, a young teen boy named Erin (Alex Sharp) is having some trouble finding his way through the raucous social environment of late night partying and chatting up girls. But that all changes when he and his friends stumble upon a strange fever dream of a party featuring a bunch of strange, sexy alien teens who are trying to blend into human society as their own extra-terrestrial rite of passage. It’s here that he meets Zan (Elle Fanning), setting him on a course for first love in the strangest way possible.

This is undoubtedly an interesting blend of genres, but I hope that the story offers up a more than Elle Fanning being this clueless alien dream girl who Alex introduces to the ways of love, humanity and punk like some kind of lost child. It has the potential to be a little (here’s that word again) problematic, even though Zan does seem to take matters into her own hands when it comes to rebelling against her alien superiors trying to stop her from getting caught up in the punk movement.

If anything, the movie at least seems to perfectly pull Neil Gaiman’s wild story into reality, complete with some David Bowie influences, including a wild-looking Nicole Kidman, who stars along with Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas. And since this comes from director John Cameron Mitchell, who gave us Hedwig and the Angry Inch and co-wrote this adaptation with Philippa Goslet, that makes perfect sense.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties doesn’t have a specific release date in the United States yet, but it’s expected to open in the United Kingdom in May, so it will probably arrive stateside sometime this summer. In the meantime, here’s the official synopsis:

From the raucous dual imaginations of fantasy laureate Neil Gaiman (“American Gods,” Coraline) and glam-rock multi-hyphenate John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus) comes the electrifying and singular pop extravaganza film, How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Enn (Alex Sharp) is a shy suburban London teenager in 1977, sneaking out with his best friends to after-hours punk parties. One night they stumble upon a bizarre gathering of sexy teenagers who seem like they are from another planet. In fact, they are from another planet, visiting Earth to complete a mysterious rite of passage. That doesn’t stop Enn from falling madly in love with Zan (Elle Fanning), a beautiful and rebellious alien teenager who, despite her allegiance to her strange colony, is fascinated by Enn. Together they embark on a delirious adventure through the kinetic punk rock world of 1970s London, inadvertently setting off a series of events that will lead to the ultimate showdown of punks vs. aliens, and test the limits of how far each of them will go for true love.

Cambodia’s Queen of Punk Wants to Kill the Love Song https://briefnews.eu/cambodias-queen-of-punk-wants-to-kill-the-love-song/ https://briefnews.eu/cambodias-queen-of-punk-wants-to-kill-the-love-song/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 11:51:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cambodias-queen-of-punk-wants-to-kill-the-love-song/ Listen to a country’s music and you’ll learn some things. Pop songs spilling from radios tell you what the youth are dreaming about — or what dreams are being sold to them. And the sounds emanating from dark, underground venues are a clue to what they’re angry about, rebelling against. A country’s music is like its state of mind, etched into history like lines on a record.

Vartey Ganiva sits across from me at a cafe in Phnom Penh discussing the state of music in Cambodia — which, to her mind, is awash in sappy love songs. “Please tell me before I leave, did you ever love me?”pleads one popular tune. The 24-year-old is considered the only female “punk” singer in the country. And her group, known as the Vartey Ganiva band, has taken off since forming a year and a half ago, recording a slew of new cuts, performing at rock venues in Phnom Penh and scheduling live appearances on Cambodian TV. Meanwhile, I’m trying to put together what punk means in Cambodia and how it aligns with the transgressive strain that started in the U.S. and the U.K. in the mid-’70s in reaction to the commercial, overly sentimental rock music of the day.

Instead of churning out another song of unrequited love, she wrote about the reality many Cambodian women face: a lazy husband who spends his money on drugs or drink.

Offering a way in, Vartey tells me about writing lyrics while in her village outside Phnom Penh. She could hear her neighbors fighting. Again. Something about the man staying out too late. About drinking. She hears this kind of fighting a lot, she says. And so instead of churning out another song of unrequited love, she wrote about the reality many Cambodian women face: a lazy husband who spends his money on drugs or drink: “My husband doesn’t know what to do every day; he only knows how to smoke yama and cigarettes, makes a mess and drinks beer and fucks other girls, wastes money in the clubs and never gives a shit.”The song “Pdey Chongrai (Evil Husband)” is raw and aggressive, like a feminist rallying cry. And in Cambodia, that’s punk.

The upstairs at Phnom Penh’s Showbox resembles any tight, sweaty space that hosts punk and metal gigs. White walls are tagged with graffiti. A bartender pours draft beer for a dollar in the back. Onstage is the death metal band Doch Chkae, which started when Cam Projects, a nongovernmental organization, provided instruments and recording space to kids living near the notorious Stung Meanchey dump site. Given a chance, the kids — not that you’d dare call them that today — created this brutal and original music. The floor gives slightly, bouncing as Cambodians and Western expats thunder about in a mosh pit.

Vartey ganiva golden street festival phnom penh cambodia 25 february 2017 0172 edit copy

Vartey looks slightly out of place in the rowdy crowd. She has the delicate features and fashionable clothes of the Khmer pop darlings she listened to as a child and now stands in opposition to. She says Doch Chkae changed how she thought about music after seeing the metal-obsessed teens perform in 2015. She knows the guitarist, who asked her to write lyrics for him. At first, she tried delivering what most Khmer women seem to want: love songs as slow and sweet as if they’d been squeezed from the country’s sugarcane. But when she began singing about women’s rights, about destitute children, dump sites and drugs — about real things — she felt she was onto something more meaningful. “I love love songs,” she says. “But not this stereotype, this well-selling recipe of a woman leaving because the other guy has a bigger motorbike.”

“A man is gold, a woman is cloth” goes a Khmer proverb. While Vartey, who’s married to a Swiss expat, sees more social progress for women in cities like Phnom Penh, she says rural Cambodia retains many of the strictures of a traditional patriarchy. In 2015, 14 percent of women fell victim to financial control by their partner and 11 percent experienced physical or sexual violence, the World Health Organization reports. Even more alarming, a 2013 U.N. survey revealed that 1 in 5 Cambodian men admit to having raped a woman. “Women can’t work outside,” Vartey says about the countryside. “You can only work for your husband at home.” And men are free to do whatever they want, she adds. “If they want, they can go out and fuck another girl. Women can’t. If they do? People talk shit.”

Vartey is “challenging the current ideas of what a female singer writes about,” says Vanntin Hoeurn, lead singer of the Cambodian metal band Sliten6ix. It’s not the music necessarily; it’s the message, he explains. In another of her songs, “Yerng Ker Chea Sattrey (We Are Aware),” she belts out: “We are the women that have come to build a masterpiece for Cambodia.” Her message? Cambodia is ripe for a #MeToo debate, and the masterpiece will be a better Cambodia built by women.

Vartey ganiva showbox phnom penh cambodia 23 december 2017 0201 edit copy

Now she’s taking her message mainstream. Vartey started out with Yab Moung Records, a Cambodian metal and punk incubator run by her husband, but she just signed with TMS, a management company that plans for her to perform live shows on Cambodian television, film music videos and play more broadly on the radio — right alongside those treacly love songs. “We saw a lot of potential,” says Dennis Garcia Arce, head of TMS. Vartey brings a “touch of reality” to a market he thinks is ready for it. “She has vision,” he says.

Part of her vision is to form an all-female punk band to perform songs that claw at the reality of growing up poor, feeling trapped by your husband and made to feel inferior. There are girls from her village who want to join, Vartey says, but first they need to learn their instruments. And they’re still too young. But she thinks they’ll be ready soon. Others will be too.

We’ll admit that we’re reaching a little bit outside of our wheelhouse with this one, but considering the talent involved in this special musical project coming in 2018, we just couldn’t resist.

There’s a chance that in your life experience of pop culture, you’ve heard the name Dr. Demento. He’s an American radio broadcast best known for novelty songs and sketch comedy, the kind that inspired “Weird Al” Yankovic to become the master song spoofer that he is today.

Dr. Demento’s show sadly came to an end back in 2010, but a wonderful musical tribute to the radio host’s influential show is coming in 2018 thanks to a cavalcade of talents getting together to record an entire album of punk covers of “mad music and crazy comedy songs” that were made famouse on the Dr. Demento Show. One of those tracks comes from the late Adam West, and let’s just say that it’s exactly the kind of song you’d want to hear Adam West covering.

Adam West Sings The Thing

That’s a cover of “The Thing,” a tune from the 1950s recorded by Phil Harris which somehow spent four weeks on the top of the music charts when it was released. Adam West’s signature voice makes it even more lively and fun than the original, and since it’s one of the final performances we’ll get from the late Batman star, we love it even more.

If you’re interested in the rest of this wacky album, it also features “Weird Al” Yankovic, Joan Jett, The Misfits, Fred Schneider of the B52s, and William Shatner and more. There are over 30 different punk covers of oddball songs that you’ll get on the album when it arrives on January 12, 2018. You can pre-order it now over pre-order the physical album over here or you can pre-order it on iTunes and get this incredible Adam West track right now.
