This week on TNT’s Snowpiercer, Layton finally got a big lead in his investigation — but is it too little, too late?

After getting bagged and dragged from his cell and warned to not attempt further communication with the tail, Layton asks Melanie and Roche if Mr. Wilford is willing to disclose what it was that Sean Wise informed on. Melanie says that Sean was keeping tabs on the train’s black market, especially a new drug called Kronole. Andre laughs, informing the two that “K: has been in the tail for two revolutions. In fact, they can go ahead and ask breachman Oz, who trades the drug for blowjobs.

Ask Oz is precisely what Layton and Roche then do, cornering the breachman in the dining car. Oz offers little intel, claiming he only traffics the drug for “humanitarian reasons,” as he recently did for tailie Winnie’s amputated mother. But later, after getting wind from Jinju (who is Till’s lover) that Nikki Genet is actually conscious, Layton and Till check on the extremely out-of-it witness. Before getting interrupted by Melanie, they notice that Nikki has black gums — a sign of Kronole abuse. It is then that Dr. Klimpt confirms that Kronole is derived from the drug he uses to put people in suspension inside the drawers. He skims some off the top, then trades it, to a janitor/courier, for supplies he needs.

Before Andre works on that new lead, he learns from Melanie that Miles had been accepted into the apprentice program, and he is allowed to check in with the kid. Andre then asks to personally let Miles’ mother figure, Josie, know that he is doing very well, but Melanie balks.

Snowpiercer 1x03Suspecting that “Fight Night” — which Mr. Wilford/Melanie fast-tracked as a(n obvious) distraction from the “unrest” of the past 48 hours — might be a good place to confront Kronole couriers, Layton and Till head to the Night Car. Andre asks bartender Zarah to get word to the head janitor, Terence, that he wants a sit-down. Terence at first sends Oz to decline the invite, but Layton presses the issue, promising that he’ll lose his Till tail. Layton does just that, and is led to Terence’s loft in the Chains. Terence complains that the detective’s investigation has dried up his chemical pipeline. Andre says that if he can get a lead on the murder, Mr. Wilford might stop caring about the K. Terence shares that he saw Sean Wise the night he died, in the company of a guy from first class with a buzz cut. Before parting ways, Andre cryptically tells Terence, “I need something very small…,” as he hands over his wedding ring in trade.

Andre dangles his juicy new lead in front of Melanie and Roche, insisting on seeing Josie before he shares it in detail. Melanie obliges, and Andre is taken to the tail, where he reports to Josie that Miles is doing really, really well — he has his own fork and everything! — before prattling on about how he was “all wrong” about him and Zarah, and how he it is Josie he really misses. He then gives her a deep kiss, before getting dragged away, shouting, “It’s only doors between us!” Shortly afterward, we see Josie in private pull from her mouth a plastic capsule, inside of which is a tiny biometric key which we had earlier seen being extracted from a severed arm (Sean’s?) and traded back and forth throughout the train in a montage.

As for Andre’s big lead, he better share it with someone soon, because Erik — the buzzcut bodyguard who works for the Lolita-like LJ Folger and her fancy-pants folks in first class — has just brutally bludgeoned two people in order to confront Nikki in her infirmary bed.

“You don’t remember me, do you, Nikki?” he observes. “But you do know who I am….”

  • Senator Lindsey Graham may have changed President Trump’s mind about pulling troops out of Syria.
  • “I think the president’s going to finish the job when it comes to ISIS,” Graham told reporters after meeting with President Trump Sunday.
  • Trump’s decision earlier this month to order his staff to execute the “full” and “rapid” withdrawal of US military from Syria was met with harsh criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.

“We are in a pause situation,”  said Senator Lindsey Graham on pulling out US troops from Syria.

After a White House lunch with President Trump, Graham indicated that Trump may have changed his mind on on the highly criticized decision to pull out of Syria.

China busts World Cup gambling ring pulling $1.5 billion in crypto bets https://briefnews.eu/china-busts-world-cup-gambling-ring-pulling-1-5-billion-in-crypto-bets/ https://briefnews.eu/china-busts-world-cup-gambling-ring-pulling-1-5-billion-in-crypto-bets/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 01:44:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-busts-world-cup-gambling-ring-pulling-1-5-billion-in-crypto-bets/

Officials in China have busted a World Cup gambling ring that took in over 10 billion yuan (nearly $ 1.5 billion) in cryptocurrency bets, reports the South China Morning Post. Six individuals allegedly connected to a dark web-based crime syndicate have been arrested and authorities have seized cryptocurrencies found in their possession worth over 10 million yuan. In a statement, police in the Guangdong province said that gambling platform they ran accepted bitcoin, ethereum and litecoin.

The platform reportedly collected bets over the course of eight months, bringing in 330,000 users from around the world. Over 8,000 individuals were named as agents, earning commissions when they attracted new members. While this is apparently the first ring to be busted that used cryptocurrency, authorities in the country have been working to crack down on gambling, which is largely illegal across China. So far, they have reportedly arrested 540 suspects and frozen 260 million yuan (~$ 39 million) as part of an effort to stem illegal World Cup betting.

Chinese authorities haven’t been big fans of cryptocurrencies. The country banned initial coin offerings last year and has been making moves to shut down access to domestic and foreign cryptocurrency exchanges.

  • The US Defense Department is reportedly analyzing the cost-to-benefit ratio of a large-scale withdrawal or transfer of US troops in Germany.
  • Trump, who has had a tenuous relationship with the German chancellor Angela Merkel, was said to have been surprised by the number of US troops stationed there.
  • Some US officials were said to have tried to dissuade Trump from taking action.
  • European officials were reportedly alarmed at the possibility of US troop movements — some of whom wondered whether Trump might use it as a negotiation tactic.
  • The National Security Council has downplayed the report.

The US Defense Department is reportedly analyzing whether or not it is feasible to conduct a large-scale withdrawal or transfer of US troops in Germany, according to a Washington Post report published on Friday.

President Donald Trump reportedly mulled the option after meeting with military aides earlier this year, US officials said in the report. Trump, who has had a tenuous relationship with the German chancellor Angela Merkel, was said to have been surprised by the number of US troops stationed in the region.

GLOW Review: Pulling No Punches, Season 2 Packs an Emotional Wallop https://briefnews.eu/glow-review-pulling-no-punches-season-2-packs-an-emotional-wallop/ https://briefnews.eu/glow-review-pulling-no-punches-season-2-packs-an-emotional-wallop/#respond Fri, 15 Jun 2018 14:29:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/glow-review-pulling-no-punches-season-2-packs-an-emotional-wallop/ TV Review Grade ASitting down to review Season 2 of Netflix’s GLOW, I tried to settle on the word that best described it, and “hard” was the one I kept coming back to — and not just because that’s the way the sparkly, spandex-clad Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling go at it in the ring, either. Over and over, the 10 superlative episodes serve up painful reminders that relationships are hard. Platonic, romantic, parental… doesn’t matter; all of ’em can lay you flat as surely as a clothesline.

Most of the emotional smackdowns, as in Season 1, are reserved for castmates Ruth and Debbie, played Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin, contenders for the title of the modern-day Davis and Crawford. Their already-shattered friendship, if you can believe it, actually gets worse before there’s even a hint that it might ever get better. But by Season 2’s conclusion, they’ve had a confrontation that’s so epic, and so long overdue, that it has to have unpacked at least some of their baggage.

Ruth’s toxic relationship with the show-within-the-show’s director Sam (Marc Maron) also delivers blow after blow until, finally, he lets down his gruff guard enough that the unthinkable happens: You feel for him almost as much as you do her. And with surprise daughter Justine (Britt Baron) now crashing at his place, he even gets the hang of fatherhood — in, of course, a uniquely Sam way. (Cue Annabella Sciorra’s entrance as Justine’s mother in 3, 2… )

glow-review-season-2-netflix-alison-brie-betty-gilpinOf the supporting players, “Welfare Queen” Tammé (Kia Stevens) gets fleshed out the most, in particular during a poignant subplot involving her college-age son. And Sam’s hiring of a new cast member, lesbian stripper Yo-Yo (Shakira Barrera), not only has a surprising effect on one of her co-stars, it sets the stage for what just might be the last thing you’d expect to see happen in the ring — yes, even the GLOW ring!

And did I mention that Season 2 is funny? Because though it’s full of catfights and love triangles worthy of Paradise Cove, it is. Showrunners Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive again manage to zigzag between the lowbrow silliness of the show-within-the-show and the higher-brow hijinks behind the scenes without giving the impression that the series has a split personality. And nobody delivers a cutting zinger like Gilpin; in Debbie’s less sympathetic moments, she’s a glitter-coated razorblade.

Perhaps best of all, since Season 2 is so emotionally brutal, when we get a break that’s not of the heart variety, it doesn’t feel like a present, it feels earned. And while no matter what you might appreciate a moment of relief, of hopefulness, you’ll instead savor it — and cling to it all the way to Season 3 — if it’s a moment hard-won.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Season 2 of GLOW is a must-binge. You’ll come away from it feeling like you’ve been elbow-dropped by Machu Picchu… and still wish they’d made twice as many episodes.

Apple is reportedly pulling apps that share location data https://briefnews.eu/apple-is-reportedly-pulling-apps-that-share-location-data/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-is-reportedly-pulling-apps-that-share-location-data/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 08:15:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-is-reportedly-pulling-apps-that-share-location-data/

Apple has reportedly started enforcing an App Store rule regarding location data more stringently. According 9to5mac, the tech giant has already removed a number of apps from the Store that share users’ location to third parties without their explicit consent. In the letter it sent to the affected developers, Apple told them their applications didn’t comply with Legal sections 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 of the App Store Review Guidelines. Those sections state that apps must not transmit “user location data to third parties without explicit consent from the user and for unapproved purposes.”

Apple also told them they need to remove any code, framework or SDK used for location data collection and third-party sharing before their apps can be listed on the Store again. As 9to5mac noted, Cupertino has started cracking down on apps that violate its location data rules just before the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation law takes effect on May 25th.

Other tech titans are also preparing for its implementation. Facebook, for instance, recently made its privacy policy easier to understand following the Cambridge Analytica scandal and will also ask users to review information on the way the website uses their data. Apple might have also started enforcing those specific sections in its guidelines after high-profile fiascos that involve user location, such as what happened to MoviePass. The subscription-based movie service’s chief once proclaimed the company watches “how you drive from home to the movies.” MoviePass quickly backtracked and ultimately removed the app’s “unused” location features.

Whether Apple is truly doing this to comply with GDPR is unclear — we’ve reached out to the company and will update this post when we hear back.
