Now, Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice and Minnesota Wild coach Bruce Boudreau are engaged in another chess match as their teams face off against each other in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.​​

“He knows me as well as I know him. I think I know the way he changes lines and what he does there, and I’m sure he knows my tendencies as well, as far as the coaching aspects goes,” Boudreau told reporters Wednesday at Bell MTS Place as both clubs prepared for Game 1 of their opening-round series (Sportsnet, 6 p.m. CT).

“If I’m not on the ball, he’ll take advantage of us.”

Maurice said every Boudreau-coached team he’s ever faced has played a quick game and he’s expecting a very straightforward approach from the Wild Wednesday night, especially because Minnesota will be playing without injured defenceman Ryan Suter.

“They do a nice job of playing a simple game. You’re going to see that,” said Maurice, adding he expects the same from his own club in the playoffs.

“The game actually gets quite a bit simpler. It gets back to just doing the basics really well,” Maurice said, noting eight or nine Jets have yet to play a single playoff game.

“The intensity on every movement increases on the ice, but the game itself is probably played in a more simple fashion.”

Winger Patrik Laine is one of the Jets who have yet to see an NHL playoff game.

“I’ve played in big games before, so I kind of know how to play, but it’s still not going to help me, even though I played in the world juniors’ final,” he said.

Team captain Blake Wheeler said he’s looking forward to starting the series in front of a hometown crowd, especially against Winnipeg’s closest geographic neighbour in the league.

“Proximity-wise, it’s great to have these sort of matchups turn into rivalries in the playoffs. It’s really where the bad blood begins. It’s going to be a good matchup,” he said.

Boudreau said he’s well aware the Jets are favoured in the series, by virtue of their regular-season record.

“Well, you’d have to blind not to see it, especially on Canadian TV, everywhere,” the Minnesota coach said.

“I’m sure we know where Winnipeg stands and rightfully so — they won nine of out of 10 [at the end of the regular season]. They were second overall in the league. I can see why teams are picking them all,” he said.

“We’re here. We’re playing the game. We’re glad we’re invited to play, you know. We’ll give it our best shot.”

On March 21 and March 28, 1969, some 500,000 Czechoslovakian citizens poured into the streets to celebrate — and thumb their noses at occupying troops from the Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany and Hungary, which had been stationed across the country since the previous August, when Warsaw Pact allies quashed Czechoslovakia’s revolutionary period of liberalization known as the Prague Spring.

But the monstrous twin rallies weren’t just about defying the Soviet-led invasion or fomenting another revolution. They were about celebrating a pair of wins against the Soviets at the 1969 World Ice Hockey Championships in Sweden.

In the years following the dashed hopes of the Prague Spring, Czechs and Slovaks were one people, especially when they got on the ice.

“I remember, as a kid, we beat the Soviets and everybody just filled the streets,” says Peter Stastny, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, who was 12 at the time. “There were massive demonstrations. In retrospect, the police were fearful. I got hit a couple of times with a police baton because I was wandering in the wrong area. Somebody just whacked me. ‘What are you doing here, kid?’ He didn’t break my back, but …”

Still reeling from the aftermath of the Prague Spring, which saw citizens killed, progressive leader Alexander Dubcek neutralized and the Czechoslovakian political apparatus revert back to centralized communist rule, the people needed reason to cheer. They got it at that historic hockey tournament.

At the time the Soviet national hockey team dominated the sport, winning Olympic gold three times since 1956. And yet on March 21, an upstart Czechoslovakia squad won 2-0 in a match brimming with intensity. In protest against the Soviets, some members of the Czechoslovakian team covered the red star on their jerseys with tape. After his team scored the first goal, Czechoslovakian forward Jaroslav Holik brandished his stick like a rifle, pointed at the Soviet goaltender and called him a “bloody communist.”

Even with a 4-3 win against the Soviets on March 28, Czechoslovakia earned bronze in the tournament, which the Soviets won for the seventh straight year. But it was clear from that point on that the country had found a platform from which it could express its rage against the Soviets and the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia.

With the 50th anniversary of the Prague Spring coming next summer, proud citizens across Czechoslovakia cite that historic period as the starting point for what would become a prominent sports dynasty.

“The communists wouldn’t allow us to go on vacations to the West,” recalls Miroslav Frycer, a Czech defector who played eight seasons for four different clubs in the National Hockey League. “They wouldn’t allow us to play where we wanted to play. On the national team, you were allowed to go out. In that sick way, it helped motivate us. To go every day to the practice, to do the things extra. ‘I want to be on the national team, I want to have some good clothes, the possibility to do something else.’ That was a big motivation.

Make no mistake, the Soviet teams of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s remain to this day one of sport’s great dynasties. But Czechoslovakia was the only team that consistently competed with the vaunted Soviets. They won the world championships in 1972, unseating a Soviet team that hadn’t lost the tournament in a decade. Between 1963 and 1986, Czechoslovakia won four world championships, the only tournament titles not captured by the Soviets. The country also groomed and developed some of the world’s best players during the Cold War, including legendary forward Jaromir Jagr, who at age 45 continues to play in the NHL and still honors the Prague Spring by wearing the number 68.

Every Czechoslovakian player trained with a singular goal: to beat the Soviets. “It was a lot of fighting and dirty words,” says Frycer. “You know you cannot beat them, so you at least try to hurt them. If we beat them, we celebrated like we won the championship. Still on our minds was 1968 in every single game. After the games there would be shaking hands, and a lot of us didn’t do it.”

That Czechoslovakian teammates could establish such cohesion was an accomplishment, given the animosity and resentment that festered over generations between the Czechs and the Slovaks. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, each group established its own state. But in the years following the dashed hopes of the Prague Spring, Czechs and Slovaks were one people, especially when they got on the ice.

“I never felt such a unity,” says Stastny. “Usually we didn’t like each other, Czechs and Slovaks. That was the first moment when everybody realized a common enemy unites you more than you can imagine.”

Nazem Kadri, James van Riemsdyk and William Nylander scored in a three-minute span in the first period for the Leafs. Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews each added their first goals of the season.

Tyler Bozak, Matthews and van Riemsdyk each had a pair of assists and Marleau, Marner and Kadri all contributed one.

Frederik Andersen made 35 saves in net for Toronto.

Marleau, who spent the first 19 seasons of his career with the San Jose Sharks, signed a three-year contract with Toronto on July 2.

The seven goals tied Toronto’s highest output from last season, a 7-1 home win against the New York Islanders on Feb. 14.

Mark Scheifele nixed the Leafs’ shutout bid at 11:31 of the third period to make it 6-1. Mathieu Perreault also scored for Winnipeg.

New Jets veteran goalie Steve Mason was pulled after Marleau’s second goal 36 seconds into the third period, having allowed five goals on 20 shots. Connor Hellebuyck stopped nine of the 11 shots he faced.

Winnipeg was dominating the opening period, getting three early power plays and testing Andersen with at least eight shots with the man advantage, but it was Toronto’s only power play of the period that paid off.

With Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba in the penalty box for hooking, Kadri went in front of Mason and took a shot, got his own rebound and then jammed the puck into the net.

The Leafs went ahead 2-0 at 17:40 after Bozak went up against Scheifele in a faceoff, got his stick on the loose puck and sent a backhand pass to Van Riemsdyk for his quick, low shot.

Nylander used Toronto’s 10th shot of the game to make it 3-0 at 18:23.

Winnipeg outshot the Leafs 17-11 in the opening period and took its fourth power play of the game into the second period, but couldn’t solve Andersen.

The netminder stopped Shawn Matthias on a breakaway and later stretched out his arm while lying on the ice to make another save.

On the other end of the ice, Mason was beat again after Matthews sent a pass across to Marleau, who went in alone, did a little stickhandling and flipped a backhand shot into the net at 8:32.

By the end of the middle period, Winnipeg was 0 for 6 on the power play, Toronto was 1 for 2 and the Jets had the 27-19 shot advantage.

Marleau had his second goal after Kadri went down the ice into the corner and fed a pass back to the veteran newcomer to score just 36 seconds into the third.

Marner took advantage of his team’s fourth power play of the game to stretch the lead 6-0 at 8:07.

Scheifele broke the goose egg when he took a Patrik Laine pass across the front of the net and beat Andersen to make it 6-1. A Matthews goal 26 seconds later and Perreault’s at 12:57 rounded out the rout.

Winnipeg heads out for a three-game road trip starting in Calgary Saturday. Toronto begins a three-game homestand Saturday against the New York Rangers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended two Moscow region ice hockey games Wednesday, accompanied by stars of the legendary 1972 Super Series.

Moscow region representatives Luch and Victoria faced off in the 7,000-seat state-of-the-art Shayba Arena in the Sochi Olympic Park in Adler.

Super Series legends Vladislav Tretiak, the current president of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia, and Hall of Famer Alexander Martynyuk, joined Putin at the Shayba Arena.

The duo played together for the Soviet Union in the Super Series, also known as the ‘Summit Series’ – a series of eight ice hockey matches of great historical significance played between Canada and the Soviet Union in September 1972.

The series featured the first match to include players from the National Hockey League (NHL). The idea of the tournament was to create a true best-on-best competition with the first four games being held in Canada and the final four in Moscow.

Canada eventually won the series four 4-3, with one match ending in a tie.

At Sochi Wednesday, Victoria eventually won the game 9-0. Putin addressed the young hockey hopefuls, introducing them to the players and offering a few words of advice after the match.

“We have brought here today the most legendary players in the entire history of hockey. The people who have done an awful lot for the development of hockey,” Putin said.

“Both the Soviet and Canadian hockey players, who took part in the outstanding series in 1972 and pushed the development of hockey forward. Thanks to this series, the interest in hockey grew worldwide.”

Putin love for ice hockey is legendary fan, featuring in a friendly game with Russian hockey veterans also in Sochi.

Wednesday’s hockey event was the second sporting event attended by Putin in a matter of days. Last weekend, the president was on hand at Moscow’s newly-renovated Luzhniki Stadium to preside over the official World Cup trophy tour ahead of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 tournament.

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski came back from a play that would have knocked most people out of a sport for life.

During the second period of Game 3 of the Blue Jackets’ first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Werenski took a puck to the face while defending a shot by Phil Kessel.

Weresnki was immediately down, gushing blood on the ice, as play continued. The Penguins later scored to tie the game up at 3-3, leading to some controversy over whether play should have stopped.

That Werenski was able to skate off the ice by himself is incredible. Even more incredibly, Weresnki later returned to the game. The Penguins won 5-4.

Afterward, Weresnki showed off the aftermath of the incident with a gruesome photo.

Replay showed the puck actually slipped under the visor and hit Werenski just below the eye.
