(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching, why it’s worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: “President Wolfman”

Where You Can Stream It: TubiTV

The Pitch: Being the President of the United States is a tough job, but for John Wolfman, his political problems are much worse than anything Watergate or even the January 6th insurrection could have brought to the table. President Wolfman is in an uphill battle to prevent his opponents from selling the United States to China through a controversial “Chimerica” international merger bill, save his son Bobby from being killed by his murderous Vice President, judge a Miss Teen Beauty Pageant, solve a mysterious series of brutal murders throughout the capitol, avoid both a crazed scientist and a vindictive Smokey the Bear, and try to hide the fact he transforms into a werewolf during every full moon.

If “President Wolfman” sounds absolutely bananas, it’s by design, but unlike other ridiculous horror comedies, “President Wolfman” was made without ever shooting a single frame of footage. Crafted entirely from recycled stock and public domain footage, the creatives behind “President Wolfman” wrote a new script, score, and digitally enhanced all of the footage to create a movie all their own. Talk about eco-friendly filmmaking.

Why It’s Essential Viewing

I first caught “President Wolfman” at the bi-annual Cinema Wasteland Horror, Drive-In and Grindhouse Movie Convention, knowing absolutely nothing about the film other than the premise of seeing a movie made entirely out of recycled footage. Most of “President Wolfman” is made from clips of the truly abysmal Dean Stockwell film “The Werewolf of Washington,” (also available on Tubi) a 1973 horror “comedy” meant to satirize the Nixon presidency.

The film uses clips from “Werewolf of Washington” alongside vintage international Coca-Cola commercials, short films you’d probably see in a 1983 health class, old PSAs with cheap production value — all Frankensteined together to create the final product. Filmmaker Mike Davis claims that “President Wolfman” comprises 112 different pieces of public domain and stock footage, with the redubbed script miraculously bringing it all together.

“President Wolfman” was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek, with envelope-pushing (and often offensively racist) comedy bits that somehow manage to become a genuinely clever satire of American culture, politics, and B-movie filmmaking. “President Wolfman” isn’t trying to offend for the sake of being shocking, but to point out how ridiculously problematic the B-movie genre often was. It’s as if someone had an AI binge-watch the entirety of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and try to generate a movie of their own using the available footage, and it somehow works beautifully.

What Makes A Film, Anyway?

“President Wolfman” is by no means the first “green film,” with even prolific filmmaker (and disgusting excuse for a human being) Woody Allen redubbing the Japanese film “Kokusai himitsu keisatsu: Kagi no kagi” to make his debut feature, “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” While “President Wolfman” could be easily written off as an experimental gimmick, it instead turns into a remarkable exercise in the limitless possibilities of indie horror. It’s clear that Davis put genuine thought and talent into crafting this hidden gem by hiring a genuinely talented cast of voice-over artists to provide the dub, including Marc Evan Jackson (“The Good Place,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) who stars as John Wolfman.

A film like “President Wolfman” is worth seeing if only for the sheer audacity of its existence. The footage does not edit together seamlessly, the visuals vary wildly in quality, and in no way does the dub even remotely look close to matching the actors’ mouths, but in a weird way, it only adds to the film’s charm. People often ask for a good horror comedy to watch with a group of friends so everyone can laugh, cheer, and throw popcorn, and this is precisely that brand of movie.

“President Wolfman” asks the audience to question what exactly defines a “film,” and begs us to find something to love in even the most poorly received and forgotten films of yesteryear. There’s value in absolutely everything that has ever been committed to screen, as long as you know how to use it. “President Wolfman” breathed new life into a mess of footage most people have pushed to the margins, and turned it into something wholly unique. If that doesn’t speak to the ingenuity of indie horror, I don’t know what else will.

Ruth Langsford brings Loose Women to a halt with wardrobe blunder: ‘Proves it’s live!’ https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-brings-loose-women-to-a-halt-with-wardrobe-blunder-proves-its-live/ https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-brings-loose-women-to-a-halt-with-wardrobe-blunder-proves-its-live/#respond Tue, 29 Sep 2020 16:21:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ruth-langsford-brings-loose-women-to-a-halt-with-wardrobe-blunder-proves-its-live/

Ruth Langsford, 60, was on hand to front the Loose Women panel on Tuesday, joined in the studio by co-stars Coleen Nolan, 55, and Janet Street-Porter, 73. Saira Khan, 50, joined the trio by video link from her home, but it wasn’t technical difficulties which brought the ITV show to a standstill. Unfortunately, the This Morning star had an incident with her make-up bag just as the opening titles had rolled.

How is Boris Johnson handling the coronavirus crisis? Vote in our poll

The host was just detailing what was coming up on the show when her wardrobe necessity fell rather loudly on the floor.

At this particular moment, Ruth had to stop the programme as she explained to viewers what had just happened.

Coleen replied: “It’s a really big suitcase, actually,” to which the This Morning star added: “A big suitcase of make-up.

“And that just proves the show is live,” she continued with her co-stars bursting into hysterics over the comical moment.

“I’m really sorry about that. I had it balanced on a tissue box but it didn’t work,’ the former Strictly Come Dancing star remarked.

After the unfortunate incident, Ruth’s eye line then returned to the autocue to tell viewers what else was coming up on the show.

Despite the wardrobe blunder, the mother-of-one went on to open up about driving her son Jack to university earlier this month.

Along with husband Eamonn Holmes, 60, the pair bid farewell to their child in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

With campuses up and down the country now seeing masses of students going into self-isolation, the presenter admitted she was “absolutely bereft”.

“You’ve got heating and light and water, so it’s not the end of the world when you look at it like that,” she said.

Also on Tuesday’s show, Andrea McLean, 50, opened up about the new lease of life writing her book has given her.

Following a breakdown last year, the presenter began to write about how she was feeling and is going to share her experiences with the public.

As a guest on the show, Andrea admitted she is no longer afraid to speak out about how she’s really feeling.

“I’m not doing it anymore. I’m not just smiling and taking the short end of the stick just because I’m the one who’s easygoing.

“I’m speaking out. I was very afraid to speak out before – lots of reasons why. In some cases, the repercussions were terrifying.

“But in others, I didn’t want people to not like me. That was a fear in itself and now I’m not scared anymore.

“I don’t care if people don’t like me anymore because this is who I am,” the presenter told her co-stars.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.

Rick and Morty theories: Key Frog scene proves Morty is Evil Morty – here’s how https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-theories-key-frog-scene-proves-morty-is-evil-morty-heres-how/ https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-theories-key-frog-scene-proves-morty-is-evil-morty-heres-how/#respond Thu, 20 Aug 2020 00:42:22 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-theories-key-frog-scene-proves-morty-is-evil-morty-heres-how/

After murdering the Ricks in his cabinet who opposed his election, Evil Morty hasn’t returned in a significant capacity since.

However, the eyepatch-wearing Morty did show up for a brief cameo in this year’s midseason opener, Never Ricking Morty.

Whilst trapped on the Story Train, Rick and Morty become entangled in a montage of sorts featuring some of their old foes, with Evil Morty leading an army of Rick soldiers and Mr Meseeks.

Despite poking fun at the series’ formula, the episode frustrated some fans with Evil Morty’s inclusion, only for the series’ antagonist to remain absent for the rest of the series.

Trump’s ‘Lynching’ Comparison Proves He ‘Values Black People So Little,’ Says Late Night’s Amber Ruffin — Watch https://briefnews.eu/trumps-lynching-comparison-proves-he-values-black-people-so-little-says-late-nights-amber-ruffin-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-lynching-comparison-proves-he-values-black-people-so-little-says-late-nights-amber-ruffin-watch/#respond Wed, 23 Oct 2019 11:57:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-lynching-comparison-proves-he-values-black-people-so-little-says-late-nights-amber-ruffin-watch/

Seth Meyers on Tuesday let Late Night writer Amber Ruffin have the floor to respond to President Donald Trump, who earlier that day likened the ongoing impeachment inquiry by the House of Representatives to a lynching. During the segment, Ruffin rebuked the “raggedy bastard” for comparing his legal predicament to the racist killings of African Americans, and scoffed at the idea that this particular tweet is just another “distraction.”

“You’re not being lynched. You know how I know? Because people who are being lynched don’t sit in a mansion tweeting about bulls–t,” she said. “Look, the reason you’re comfortable comparing your situation to a lynching is because you value black people so little that, in your mind, a black person dying is equal to your slight discomfort. Well, you know what causes my slight discomfort? Listening to you breathe,” she said, which was followed by a montage of POTUS’ infamous sniffles.

“I keep hearing people say [that] this is a distraction,” she continued. “The president saying racist things isn’t ‘a distraction. It’s a real thing that makes real Americans feel unsafe… Now, it’s no surprise Trump is a racist, because his dad was a racist. His dad was arrested in 1927 near a Klan rally. That doesn’t prove that he was in the Klan, but if you see me near a Cinnabon, it’s not because I love waiting in line — and you will see me at a Cinnabon.”

Ruffin, who is best known to viewers for recurring segments such as “Amber Says ‘What?!’” and “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell,” will soon headline her own late-night series. The Amber Ruffin Show, which is set to air weekly, is currently in development for NBCUniversal’s forthcoming streaming service Peacock, which is set to bow in April 2020.

Don’t panic! Dad’s Army proves to be as good as it was https://briefnews.eu/dont-panic-dads-army-proves-to-be-as-good-as-it-was/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-panic-dads-army-proves-to-be-as-good-as-it-was/#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2019 16:49:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-panic-dads-army-proves-to-be-as-good-as-it-was/

Cold Feet’s Robert Bathurst was perfect as Sergeant Wilson and Kevin McNally wasn’t far off as pompous Captain Mainwaring; although Mathew Horne as Private Walker did occasionally feel more like a subdued Brian Conley than James Beck’s immortal spiv. Using the original Jimmy Perry and David Croft-penned scripts, Mercury Productions remade three long-lost episodes of series two of Dad’s Army that the BBC wiped in the mid-1970s – an act of cultural vandalism few comedy fans will ever forgive them for. After the pig’s ear BBC4 made of their 2016 classic sitcom remakes, expectations were understandably low. But mercifully these shows are faithful and respectful recreations.

The first, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Walker, was originally broadcast in black and white in March 1969.

A terrible crisis loomed for the Wilmington-on-Sea Home Guard when wily Joe Walker was called up for the regular army – “if Walker goes, so do the cigarettes and the whisky”.

Mainwaring and Wilson make Walker’s case to top brass in London, who wrongly believe him to be a contender for a crack team of long-distance walkers (“What’s this walker’s name?” “It’s Walker, sir.”) That fails but Wilson sits on the Military Service Hardship Committee which considers appeals from one-man businesses that would be ruined by military service.

“Wait a minute,” says Mainwaring. “Walker, he’s a one-man business.” Wilson: “Well if he’s called up he’d hardly be ruined, sir.” Mainwaring: “No, but we shall be.”

The bid conks out when the committee asks to see Walker’s books – he doesn’t have any. In the event, he enlists but is invalided out…

It’s a testimony to the writing the show works so well. Wonderful characters, a terrific cast, memorable catchphrases and scripts gave Dad’s Army universal appeal.

Even an apparent three-in-a-bed scene wasn’t what it looked like, with the camera pulling back to show our heroes on an underground platform.

The last original show was screened in 1977 but repeats still pull in millions. When Dad’s Army launched in 1968, Daily Express TV critic Ron Boyle dubbed it “a classic”.

He wasn’t wrong. If only we could still make them like this…

Episode two A Stripe For Frazer is screened tonight, episode three Under Fire tomorrow, both on Gold at 8pm.

Riverdale season 3 spoilers: Fan spots MAJOR clue which proves Archie Andrews is NOT dead? https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-3-spoilers-fan-spots-major-clue-which-proves-archie-andrews-is-not-dead/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-3-spoilers-fan-spots-major-clue-which-proves-archie-andrews-is-not-dead/#respond Thu, 17 Jan 2019 05:40:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-3-spoilers-fan-spots-major-clue-which-proves-archie-andrews-is-not-dead/

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale season three episode nine, No Exit.

Riverdale season three returned this week following a midseason break and dived straight back into the bizarre Gargoyle King mystery.

Episode nine, titled No Exit, also focused on Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa), who has been living in a cabin in Canada since escaping prison.

When the convict is attacked by a bear in the woods, while out with his dog Vegas, he puts in a distress call.

On the phone in the cabin, Archie is asked how severe his injuries are, and though bleeding heavily, he only says “it’s bad”.

After, he appears to pass out or hallucinate and is suddenly sat in the cabin with deceased Cassidy Bullock (Harrison MacDonald) and three dead men from the mines.

The guys ask him to play Gryphons and Gargoyles, claiming it is the only way he can get back to Riverdale.

First, Archie is tasked with defeating the Black Hood and goes back in time to the moment before the Black Hood shot his father and takes him down.

He then finds himself playing the board game with Warden Norton and is tasked with killing the Gargoyle King.

Believing the Gargoyle King is Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelous), Archie stabs the father of his former girlfriend Veronica (Camila Mendes).

His actions elevate him to the final level, where he is playing with Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica.

For his last task, Archie is asked to kill the man who got him into all the trouble – himself.

Suddenly, he finds himself with a bat in his hand in his own bedroom, telling his father he is responsible because he is weak and stupid.

After smashing his own face in, blood is seen pouring out of his body as he lay on his bed with his eyes open.

Has Archie really killed himself? Or is it all just a figment of his imagination, or perhaps he was hallucinating?

Some fans fear he ended his own life, with one writing on Twitter: “I think Archie may have just died, but that can’t happen right?”

Another person tweeted: “Mourning the death of a fictional television character is exhausting. I never got over Derek Shepherd [from Grey’s Anatomy] and now I have to deal with this Archie thing. I can’t.”

However, a fan pointed out that in the episode nine trailer Archie was seen pointing a gun at Hiram and in the preview clip for episode 10 the businessman suffered a bullet wound, suggesting the redhead did not die.

“Archie is not dead. In the episode nine teaser there is a frame with Archie pointing a gun at Hiram in the hospital and in the episode 10 teaser Hiram is shot laying on the floor. Archie is not dead don’t get fooled.”

Riverdale continues next Wednesday on The CW in the US and today on Netflix in the UK.

Grand Slam proves curling is as popular as ever on the Rock https://briefnews.eu/grand-slam-proves-curling-is-as-popular-as-ever-on-the-rock/ https://briefnews.eu/grand-slam-proves-curling-is-as-popular-as-ever-on-the-rock/#respond Mon, 17 Dec 2018 03:02:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/grand-slam-proves-curling-is-as-popular-as-ever-on-the-rock/ CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, N.L. — A small piece of curling history was made Sunday at the Grand Slam of Curling event in Newfoundland and Labrador.

For the first time ever at a Grand Slam, the men's final was played between two Scottish teams.

Bruce Mouat and Ross Paterson took to the ice in Conception Bay South Arena Sunday afternoon looking to claim the top curling prize and a cheque for $ 30,000, but the team everyone in the arena and across the province wanted on the ice wasn't playing.

The tournament didn't end the way the locals wanted it to but they still showed up at the rink for the men's championship. All week long they packed the arena, cheering wildly every time Team Gushue hit the ice.

The event sold out shortly after tickets went on sale one year ago. But hometown curling heroes Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker were bounced from the bonspiel in the quarter-finals, opening up the opportunity for the two Scottish teams to take the spotlight.

Back-and-forth they went the entire game, trading single points throughout. It was cautious curling from both sides, perhaps the case because of nerves.

Mouat forced an extra-end after scoring one in the eighth, giving Paterson last rock in the extra.

The Scottish skip made a tricky hit-and-stick to capture his first-ever Grand Slam win, defeating Mouat 4-3. After the game Ross Paterson was overrun with emotion.

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet," Paterson said with tears in his eyes. "I'm a bit emotional thinking about it. I think some people were skeptical about us at the start and maybe didn't give us too much of a chance but we believe in ourselves."

Watch highlights from Paterson's 4-3 win:

Scotland's Ross Paterson edged compatriot Bruce Mouat 4-3 in an extra end to win the National for his first career Grand Slam of Curling title. 1:42

For Paterson, the win was even sweeter doing it in front of a lively crowd where curling means a lot.

"It's incredible. You curl for events like this. This is what you dream of growing up and it's a shame our friends and family don't get to experience this with us."

Homan relishes 'fun vibe'

While the men's final was an all-international affair, the women's final was an all-Canadian matchup.

Two of the country's powerhouse teams took to the ice Sunday night in Conception Bay South. Rachel Homan and her rink out of Ottawa was facing Kerri Einarson and the all-skip team from Gimli, Man.

Skip Rachel Homan, right, had a successful week in Conception Bay South as her rink captured its ninth Grand Slam title. (Jeffrey Au/World Curling Federation)

The game was a story of missed opportunities, especially for Einarson who on a number of occasions failed to capitalize on chances throughout the game.

Homan took a 3-0 lead midway through the game after back-to-back stolen single points and never looked back.

She would cruise to her ninth Grand Slam title, defeating Einarson 4-1.

"It wasn't my best game here but this is a great place to win. It was a fun vibe all week and everyone was so friendly. Newfoundland loves curling and I'm sure we'll be back a lot," Homan said.

Watch highlights from Homan's 4-1 win:

Homan captured her second career National title, defeating Kerri Einarson 4-1in the final. She also ties Jennifer Jones with her ninth Grand Slam title. 0:31

The win is also marks back-to-back Grand Slam wins for Homan's team who seem to have found their stride in the first half the season after last year's Olympic disappointment.

"We took the break from last season and are finding that fire again to want to push our game and ourselves. We want to keep getting better more than ever."

Making a return to Newfoundland and Labrador?

There's a case to be made that more national and international events should be hosted in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Yes, it's a fair bit of distance away from most of Canada, which makes travelling and organizing difficult, but the way the fans rally around events makes it worth considering.

There have been less than a handful of such events over the year but they always sell-out in a hurry, creating an incredible atmosphere that the players rant and rave about.

Throughout the week in Conception Bay South, volunteers were buzzing around with smiles on their faces, ready to help at a second's notice. The fans not only cheered and applauded every Gushue shot, they were appreciative of the other teams as well.

Rumours have swirled the entire week about the same Grand Slam event returning to Newfoundland and Labrador one year from now. From an organizer's perspective, it would seem to make sense to return as it's a guaranteed sold-out event.

When Newfoundland and Labrador gets a chance to host events like this, the people of the province use it to showcase their world-class hospitality — it's something they take tremendous pride in.

Now it appears the curling world is finally taking notice and bringing the roaring game to the Rock with more regularity.

Lili Reinhart looks like a “freakin’ idiot” — and we say that with the utmost respect. The Riverdale star chose to dress up as Napoleon Dynamite for Halloween, joined by castmate Camila Mendes as foreign exchange student Pedro from the 2004 cult-classic.

The CW BFFLs were, of course, far from the only TV stars to commence Halloween festivities a few days early. Timeless‘ Matt Lanter and wife Angela Stacy went with a couples’ costume, dressing as Office lovebirds Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly. Then there was Arrow‘s Stephen Amell, who ditched his DC Comics alter ego and allowed his adorable daughter Mavi to take the superhero spotlight.

Many other familiar faces — who play dress-up for a living — came up with some inspired looks for Halloween-weekend partying, including Vampire Diaries vet Nina Dobrev, who put her own unique spin on inevitable Best Picture nominee A Star Is Born, and Last Man Standing daughter Kaitlyn Dever, whose costume is bound to make your knees buckle. And we mustn’t exclude SIX operative Olivia Munn, who channeled a fan-favorite Crazy Rich Asian.

Flip through our this year’s Halloween photo gallery (to be updated over the coming days), then tell us which costumes impressed you most.

IBM finally proves that quantum systems are faster than classicals https://briefnews.eu/ibm-finally-proves-that-quantum-systems-are-faster-than-classicals/ https://briefnews.eu/ibm-finally-proves-that-quantum-systems-are-faster-than-classicals/#respond Thu, 18 Oct 2018 18:05:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ibm-finally-proves-that-quantum-systems-are-faster-than-classicals/

In 1994, MIT professor of applied mathematics, Peter Shor, developed a groundbreaking quantum computing algorithm capable of factoring numbers (that is, finding the prime numbers for any integer N) using quantum computer technology. For the next decade, this algorithm provided a tantalizing glimpse at the potential prowess of quantum computing versus classical systems. However researchers could never definitively prove that quantum would always be faster in this application or whether classical systems could overtake quantum if given a sufficiently robust algorithm of its own. That is, until now.

In a paper published Thursday in the journal Science, Dr. Sergey Bravyi and his team reveal that they’ve developed a mathematical proof which, in specific cases, illustrates the quantum algorithm’s inherent computational advantages over classical.

“It’s good to know, because results like this become parts of algorithms,” Bob Sutor, vice president of IBM Q Strategy and Ecosystem, told Engadget. “They become part of decisions about how people will start to attack problems. Where will they try classical techniques? Where will they try quantum techniques? How will those interplay? How will they work back and forth together?”

What’s more, the proof shows that, in these cases, the quantum algorithm can solve the problem in a fixed number of steps, regardless of how many inputs are added. With a classical computer, the more inputs you add, the more steps it needs to take in order to solve. Such are the advantages of parallel processing.

“The main point of this paper is not that somehow we discover some incredibly important quantum algorithm, or some practical, interesting problem,” Bravyi told Engadget. “We ask if we can separate a constant depth [between] quantum and classical algorithms. As we increase the problem size, the runtime of the quantum algorithm remains constant, but the total number of operations grows.”

As Bravyi points out, this new proof doesn’t, in and of itself, solve any existing computational issues.

Instead, “it gives us insight into what makes a quantum computers more powerful,” he continued. “And hopefully in the future it will lead to more practical, useful algorithms.”

Those yet-to-be-developed algorithms won’t even necessarily be designed for quantum systems, the research could lead to improvements in hybrid classical-quantum systems as well. “We can start discussing things to a much greater depth than we had to, or were able to, before. We can start to really kind of separate out for people, what goes in to all the decisions about creating quantum computers, and creating the software stack on them, and algorithms.”
