From an early age, animator Don Bluth was a great admirer of Disney and has said in interviews that as a child, he would practice drawing by copying old Disney comic books. This childhood activity led to him being hired by Disney to work on their feature film version of “Sleeping Beauty” in the mid-1950s. After a stint doing missionary work and animating for various TV shows, Bluth returned to Disney in the mid-’70s to work on the company’s version of “Robin Hood.” Bluth worked on various animated features for Disney, eventually rising to the role of animation director for the 1977 film “Pete’s Dragon.” Over the course of working for Disney, however, Bluth became kind of disillusioned with the way the company owned all of their animators’ work, and how animators were all trained to draw and animate the same way. Bluth left Disney in 1979 to form his own production company.

During the final four years of his employ at Disney — during the production of “Pete’s Dragon” and “The Rescuers” — Bluth was, in his spare time, inviting his friend Gary Goldman and various younger animators to back home to his garage studio to work on a short film in secret. Bluth must have been motivated by production on this underground short, as he was eventually emboldened enough to quit in the middle of “The Fox and the Hound,” a film that was delayed because of his walk-out.

He, Goldman, and his animators completed the short they had been working on, and sold it to various TV networks as an animated Christmastime special. The short was called “Banjo the Woodpile Cat,” and you can watch it below.

Banjo The Woodpile Cat

“Banjo the Woodpile Cat” is a 26-minute short about an irascible talking kitten named Banjo (Sparky Marcus) who causes mischief to the point of damage. When he nearly kills one of his sisters, Banjo’s father (Ken Sansom) sends Banjo out to fetch a beating switch intended for Banjo’s corporal punishment. Rather than be beaten, Banjo takes to the road and treks into the big city (actually Salt Lake City where Bluth lived) where he runs afoul of the human traffic. He eventually falls in with numerous city cats before locating a truck that will drive him home. When he returns home, all is forgiven.

Like much of Bluth’s work, “Banjo” appears on its surface to be a lighthearted and delightful romp, but soon skews into darkness and sadness. A lot of Bluth’s films, especially in the early 1980s, emerges as dank, scary, or tragic. Even the Spielberg-produced “An American Tail” from 1986 is mostly about how sad the mouse characters feel in being separated. “Banjo” isn’t so much an adventure as a survival story.

The character animation in “Banjo” is first rate, and it’s certainly a sight better than a lot of Disney fare from the 1970s. If one notices a “shaggy” visual style in 1970s Disney animated fare, it’s because the studio had taken to using an animation technique called xerography, which would allow for the photocopying of animation cels. It was a great way to save money, but also a great way to make a film look cheaper than it was. “Banjo,” as its origin story would belie, looks like it was painstaking hand-animated over the course of four years. The story is detailed on various animation websites, as well as in the Los Angeles Times.

The Secret Of NIMH

“Banjo,” as it turns out, was the ideal proof-of-concept that Bluth needed to gather the wherewithal to make an animated feature film of his own. For the next few years, Bluth would work on a feature based on Robert C. O’Brien’s 1971 novel “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.” The completed feature, released in 1982, was called “The Secret of NIMH,” it proved to be an intense, shadowy antidote to Disney. This was during a time when Disney’s animation studio was floundering; the ’80s, with bombs like “The Black Hole” and “The Black Cauldron, is certainly Disney’s biggest flop era.

“NIMH” stood counter to that. The film followed an anthropomorphic mouse named Mrs. Brisby (perhaps “Frisby” sounded too much like “frisbee,” the role played by Elizabeth Hartman) as she needed to trek from her cinder block home — at the advice of a terrifying owl — to find medicine for her child, ailing from pneumonia. In her quest, she discovers an enclave of rats who reveal that they, along with Mrs. Brisby’s dead husband, had been genetically enhanced in a local lab. These are not mere anthropomorphic rats in clothes, but enhanced rats who have learned to make use of human technology. Those are some pretty intense notions for a kid flick.

According to Goldman, speaking with Traditional Animation in 2012, Disney took a look at “Banjo the Woodpile Cat” while he and Bluth were working on it … and they didn’t offer to buy it. Disney passed on “Banjo,” and they passed on Bluth. A rival studio was born, and Bluth made some pretty striking, and amazingly animated feature films throughout the ’80s.

Disney’s loss was everyone else’s gain.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. EPs Reflect on Their Sousa Fake-Out, Why ‘Unlikely Match’ With Daisy Proved Peachy https://briefnews.eu/agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d-eps-reflect-on-their-sousa-fake-out-why-unlikely-match-with-daisy-proved-peachy/ https://briefnews.eu/agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d-eps-reflect-on-their-sousa-fake-out-why-unlikely-match-with-daisy-proved-peachy/#respond Sun, 16 Aug 2020 20:20:54 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d-eps-reflect-on-their-sousa-fake-out-why-unlikely-match-with-daisy-proved-peachy/

If you thought that Agent Carter alum Enver Gjokaj would only be making a glorified cameo during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s final season, that misdirect was 100-percent on purpose.

“The plan was always for him to come on for more than one [episode] but to make it feel like [just] one, so that we could surprise people,” exec producer Jeffrey Bell told TVLine at a press event for the series finale.

Because of Season 7’s time travel element, “it made sense to us to have Sousa, who is a ‘man out of time,’ coming along for the ride,” said co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen. “We get a lot of fish-out-of-water, funny, generational, tech [humor].” (To cite but one example, per co-showrunner Jed Whedon, “You get a guy who says, ‘It’s peachy’!”)

When all was said and done, Sousa not only stuck around for 10 of the farewell run’s 13 episodes, he also wound up Zephyring off into the sunset with the formidable Daisy Johnson aka Quake (played by original cast member Chloe Bennet). That happy ending was something the producers could only hope for.

“We instantly fell in love with the concept during the season of bringing him in and letting him play with us for a little bit,” Whedon recalled. “But one of the good things about TV is you can make decisions as you move.

“We were hopeful that [Daisy and Sousa] would have chemistry, and we felt like we could write Sousa into a place, and her into a place, that felt like it would be organic to them,” he continued. “Seeing them on-screen and seeing them play, we were pretty confident that it would work.”

Whedon and Tancharoen of course had worked with Gjokaj before, as writers/story editors for Fox’s Dollhouse, so they knew that he could rise to any occasion. “Enver’s great, he could do anything,” Whedon noted, “so [a Sousa/Daisy pairing] was one of those things that we had hopes for, but only when he came on did we kind of cement that idea and run with it.”

The trick was “finding the angle, because they don’t, on paper, seem compatible,” Whedon observed. “She’s always calling him a dork and just kind of laughing at him. But he’s so solid and so confident in liking strong women and all that, it just felt great. So we were happy with that.”

“They were a very unlikely match, but we knew that it would work,” said Tancharoen. Added Bell: “The chemistry was even more than we’d hoped.”

The egg in the beer, it would turn out, was the bromance that also formed in the last few episodes.

“Not only was there chemistry between Daisy and Sousa, but Sousa and Mack (Henry Simmons),” Tancharoen noted. “Those are some of my favorite scenes, specifically in Mr. Bell’s episode” — the first hour of the series finale, which Bell wrote.

“They were fun to write in [Episode] 12, putting those two together,” added Bell. “It was great.”

F8 proved there’s no escape from Facebook https://briefnews.eu/f8-proved-theres-no-escape-from-facebook/ https://briefnews.eu/f8-proved-theres-no-escape-from-facebook/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 21:17:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/f8-proved-theres-no-escape-from-facebook/

During a keynote about privacy at F8, Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos shared an image of the world that used light to show the sheer size of the company’s network. It was intended to highlight all the places where people are using a Facebook product, and as you might expect, there weren’t many dark spots.

This year, Facebook’s F8 developers conference was bound to be different. After all, the company is still dealing with the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica (CA) data privacy scandal. But, Zuckerberg said during the opening keynote he was ready to “move forward,” and instead he came to talk about how Facebook plans to light up the rest of Stamos’ map.

The goal, Zuckerberg said, is to make the world smaller by building products that will help people connect in “meaningful ways,” no matter where they are or what device they’re using. With more than 2.2 billion monthly active users, Facebook alone is already hard to escape. How else will you find out about your next high school reunion or when your distant cousin has a baby? For millions it’s their preferred means of communication, and for an alarming amount of people, it’s how they get their news.

Facebook has also found ways to inject itself in people’s lives in an almost unthinkable way. If you want to donate to charities, you can do that on Facebook. Want to promote your bands show, it has you covered. And with Groups, which it now plans to make more of a centerpiece of its site, you can be in touch with like-minded individuals who you may never meet in person.

This reach is magnified even further when you remember that Facebook owns some of the other most popular social apps and services across the globe. This includes Instagram, which has more than 800 million monthly users (and will likely hit a billion soon); WhatsApp, which has 1.5 billion monthly users (almost as many as Facebook); and Messenger, the standalone chat app that now has more than 1.3 billion monthly users.

Oh, and let’s not forget about Oculus, which Facebook bought in 2014 and is arguably the most promising virtual reality company. Oculus just launched its first mobile VR headset, the Go, with a $ 200 price tag that puts it in impulse purchase territory.

VR hasn’t gone mainstream yet, but Facebook has a chance to make that happen with its Oculus Go. One of the ways it plans to do that is by making virtual reality social, with features that will let users “hang out” with others in digital, 360-degree spaces. You can be watching a movie with friends and it’ll be like going to the theater, except you won’t be there physically and you’ll have a headset strapped to your face. Facebook is also rolling out similar experiences for live events, including concerts and sports matches.

All of this is to say Facebook has something for everyone, whether you want to stay in touch with your older relatives (Facebook), make new friends (Instagram), chat with friends overseas (WhatsApp) or soak in the future of entertainment (Oculus). And as the company continues to grow, it will only collect more data on you and everyone you know.

Simply put, Facebook doesn’t just want to be a part of your life, it wants to be your life.

And the company isn’t done yet. At F8, it announced that it would be taking on Tinder with its own dating service, which is scheduled to launch in the next few months. With the billions of dollars it makes every quarter, Facebook could’ve just bought Tinder and called it a day. But why spend all that money when it can just build a similar experience and, perhaps, make it even better?

Facebook’s hefty user base will make it an immediate threat to other matchmaking offerings. We don’t know yet if Facebook’s matchmaking feature will be a hit, but with the amount of data it already has on people and the resources at its disposal to create seamless apps, no one will be surprised if it simply makes all other dating services obsolete.

Case in point: When the company reportedly failed to buy Snapchat in 2013 for $ 3 billion, it went ahead and just cloned its most popular feature, Stories, which is now a big part of the Facebook and Instagram apps. It didn’t take long for Snapchat to start losing users as a result, and it also affected its bottom line, as advertisers flocked to Facebook’s product. Instagram is now at 300 million daily active users, compared to Snapchat’s 191 million. It’s clear this has paid off for Facebook, which says Stories will soon be the most popular way people share updates.

We should be concerned with the growing reach of Facebook.

Michael T. Zimmer, Associate Professor at The School of Information Studies, UCM

“We should be concerned with the growing reach of Facebook,” said Michael T. Zimmer, an associate professor at the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “The rise of Messenger — especially once it spun into a standalone app — was a big step in its reach into our daily activities. But more than that, the ubiquity of ‘Like’ buttons and ‘Login with Facebook’ features across the web means it is nearly impossible to avoid touching Facebook in your daily online activities.” Zimmer added that whether or not users take control of their privacy settings when they post on Facebook, which is what Zuckerberg focuses on when asked about privacy, nearly everyone will still be subjected to “Facebook’s immense apparatus of tracking and data collection.”

“Either you give enough people in the world what they want, or you don’t succeed. And Facebook over and over again is giving people what they want.”

Other academics don’t see an issue with Facebook becoming too powerful. “The success of Facebook in these various things that it does, and the fact that it just keeps doing more and more, is a reflection of the fact that [it’s] doing something right [and] that people are enjoying by and large what they’re doing,” said Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University. He noted that, while it’s obvious that Facebook has made mistakes and it’s not perfect, its success shouldn’t come as a surprise. “Either you give enough people in the world what they want, or you don’t succeed,” Levinson said. “And Facebook over and over again is giving people what they want.”

Mark Zuckerberg Delivers Keynote Address At Facebook F8 Conference

Some have even raised the “M” word when talking about Facebook. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) asked Zuckerberg directly during his congressional hearing: “You don’t think you have a monopoly?”

“It certainly doesn’t feel like that to me,” the embattled Facebook CEO answered with a nervous smirk, which drew laughs, including from Graham. It may not feel like it to Zuckerberg, but the truth is that Facebook really doesn’t have any competition — Twitter and Snapchat’s combined have around 400 million monthly users. That’s nowhere near Facebook’s 2.2 billion — and that’s not even counting Instagram or WhatsApp.

Even with the massive web it’s already created, Facebook says there are still more than 3 billion people who don’t have access to the internet, and by extension, it’s services. It wants to change that by building fast and cheap networks that will make internet accessible in every part of the globe. Theoretically, whether or not you use Facebook is up to you, though at the end of the day it may not feel like you have much of a choice.

How The Rock conquered the China box office and proved he’s the biggest movie star on the planet (TWX) https://briefnews.eu/how-the-rock-conquered-the-china-box-office-and-proved-hes-the-biggest-movie-star-on-the-planet-twx/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-rock-conquered-the-china-box-office-and-proved-hes-the-biggest-movie-star-on-the-planet-twx/#respond Mon, 16 Apr 2018 14:50:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-rock-conquered-the-china-box-office-and-proved-hes-the-biggest-movie-star-on-the-planet-twx/ Rampage 3 Warner BrosWarner Bros.

  • With its $ 55 million opening weekend take in China, Dwayne Johnson’s latest movie, “Rampage,” proved that the star is one of the few actors who can bring in major coin across the world.
  • But his dominance in China, the second-largest movie market in the world, has been years in the making.

For many studio heads these days, glancing at how their latest movie did in China is in some ways more important than how it did in North America. That’s because things are changing drastically for an industry where the domestic box office has been considered the true indicator of a movie’s worth for over a century.

Since the early 2000s, the movie industry in China has gone from almost non-existent to the second-largest market in the world. And by 2020 it could surpass the US to become number one, as movie theaters continue to be built at a hurried pace to feed the interest of not just the Hollywood titles, but the country’s burgeoning homegrown production industry.

Dr Stephen Hawking, who died on March 14 – Einstein’s birthday – aged 76, defied doctors for more than 50 years and rewrote our understanding of the universe in the process.

The Oxford-born, Cambridge-based Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology was diagnosed with motor neurone disease aged 21. Doctors said he had just a few years to live.

  • McDonald’s rolled out its famous Szechuan sauce across the US on Monday.
  • “Rick and Morty” fans rioted in October after the fast-food chain gave away Szechuan sauce across the US — and demand far exceeded supply.
  • The Szechuan sauce is good, but the goopy sweet-and-sour-style sauce is far from riot-worthy.

McDonald’s Szechuan sauce is finally on the fast-food chain’s menu after months of petitions, bidding wars, and riots in fast-food parking lots.
