One of Google’s most senior female executives has revealed that she joined a mass protest at the firm’s handling of sexual harassment.
Speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s WSJ Tech D.Live conference on Monday, chief financial officer Ruth Porat said she walked out with her finance team from Google’s Mountain View headquarters in California. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Prescott, 25, was asked about the player-led kneeling protests aimed at highlighting social injustice in the US and initiated by former San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick, to which he replied he believed protesting during the pre-game playing of the national anthem was not “the time or the venue to do so”.
“I’d never protest during the anthem, and I don’t think that’s the time or the venue to do so,” Prescott said. “The game of football has always brought me such peace, and I think it does the same for a lot of people.”
The 2016 Pro Bowl player the went on to say the controversy of the protests should not be brought into football games, but did express that he would be willing to take the “next step” towards ending injustice.
“When you bring such a controversy to the stadium, to the field, to the game, it takes away … from that,” he said. “It takes away from the joy and the love that football brings a lot of people.”
“I think this whole kneeling, and all of that, was all about just raising awareness, and the fact that we’re still talking about social injustice years later, I think we’ve gotten to that point. I think we’ve proved it. We know about social injustice. I’m up for taking a next step, whatever that step may be for action and not just kneeling.”
Prescott’s comments come just days after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called US president Donald Trump’s interest in the NFL protest issue “problematic” but added that his players will be obliged to stand for the anthem. Prescott said the ruling had “no effect” on him as he does not partake in kneeling regardless.
“It has no effect to me because I do exactly what I’m doing and what I’ve said and what I stand by. Whether I was wearing the star or not, whether I was playing for Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones or any other owner. I believe in what I believe in, and that’s that,” Prescott said.
The NFL and NFL Players Association had earlier made a joint statement saying that no anthem-related team policies will be enforced for the next several weeks as part of a standstill agreement between the two sides.
Going against the ruling, Jones stated that “our policy is that you stand at the anthem, toe on the line,” and gave an emphatic “no” to whether he would support players remaining in the dressing room during the anthem.

Police removed some 200 students who occupied the famous Sorbonne University in Paris. Several universities across France remain blocked by protesters raging against a new educational reform.
The demonstrators in the University of Paris, commonly known as the Sorbonne, occupied the spaces inside the building on Thursday afternoon. The university authorities attempted to negotiate with the protesters but when three-hour talks failed, they called for police intervention. The evacuation of the students which took place in the early hours of Friday was “calm” and “without incidents,” according to the police statement.

The students were protesting against the government plans to grant universities the power to set up admission criteria in order to avoid overcrowding. The opponents of the reform insist that the law would violate the basic French principle of education for everyone.
On Friday, the Sorbonne announced on Twitter that it would shut for at least two days for “security reasons.”
The university, one of the oldest in Europe, was the epicenter of student protests 50 years ago in May 1968, a pivotal moment in modern French history. The protests at that time slammed capitalism, American imperialism and traditional values.
Also on Thursday, police units were called to the Paris-Tolbiac University, which has been occupied by protesting students since late March. However, officers didn’t remove the demonstrators. “We are going to stay here because we want the government to hear us, people are angry,” a female student from the university told L’Obs.
The protest in the Sorbonne is the latest in a string of demonstrations against the new educational reforms that have taken place across the country since March. According to the Education Ministry, four universities – in Toulouse, Montpelier, Rennes and Saint-Denis – either remain completely blocked by protesters or closed. Nine more have been struck by partial blockades and protests.

On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron stressed that he would push more for the reforms and called those who protest in the universities “professional agitators, professionals of disorder.” His pro-market reforms in the early days of his presidency were also met with student protests. Once regarded as a breath of fresh air, Macron has seen his approval rating slide among left-leaning voters. His popularity is rapidly collapsing following overwhelming presidential and parliamentary wins in summer 2017.
In less than a year in office, Macron, a former investment banker, has been already dubbed “the President of the Rich” for his lavish lifestyle. On several other occasions he was slammed for his royal birthday celebration, comparing himself to a king and advising workers protesting job cuts “to look for work.”

The battle over President Trump’s immigration policy has inflamed passions across the country, but Twitter and Facebook aren’t the only places to protest anymore.
In San Francisco, America’s tech capital and an epicenter of foodie culture, there’s a new way to protest: restaurant checks.
Well, at least one activist deli in the city so far is embracing the tactic.
I witnessed the new form of protest on a recent Sunday, while fetching some bagels and lox. The location of the incident: Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen, one of the few good Jewish delis in San Francisco — even if it offers more of a West Coast twist on deli classics, rather than fulfill the promise of an authentic eatery with East Coast bona fides.
While paying my bill, I noticed a pithy, strategically placed message directly under the signature line:
Alexei Oreskovic
“We are all Immigrants,” it read.
It’s possible that this is a reference to a pervasive internet image: Back in 2015, a viral photo showed a restaurant check with “Tip for U.S. Citizens Only” written in lieu of a gratuity for the server. While even the fact-checkers at Snopes have never been able to confirm that the incident in question ever happened, the picture still resurfaces periodically on social media.
So, perhaps, Wise Sons is offering its own take on that meme. And given that bagels became a classic American breakfast item thanks to the Jewish immigrants who brought them from Poland, the message on the invoice struck a pretty persuasive chord.

In a place like San Francisco, where people orient-their lives around food almost as much as they do around the startups they work for, the check-borne protest is a clever way to get a message across.
The potential is vast. From Pupuserias to Gyro joints, every restaurant in the city has the power to unleash a groundswell of activism by harnessing the thin slips of paper. And the causes need not be limited to immigration. Net neutrality, anyone?
Alas, the revolution isn’t here yet.
I’ve inspected every bill that’s crossed my table since that day, and have been disappointed to find only boilerplate commercial copy highlighting a web address, a phone number or a curt thank you for my patronage.
Maybe Wise Sons was just ahead of its time. Like every great tech product that originates in Silicon Valley, timing is everything.

Thousands of protesters gathered at the Capitol Building in Washington, DC to protest the Trump administration’s decision to ditch programs protecting immigrants. Over two hundred people were arrested, including two members of Congress.
Organized by The New York Immigrant Coalition and CASA Virginia, protesters called for Congress to vote to protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA) and the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.

Approximately two hundred protesters were arrested after blocking the entrance to the Capitol Building. Among them were Representatives Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) and Judy Chu (D-California).
Police set up tables to process the arrested protesters on the spot.
Protesters chanted the Spanish phrase “Si se puede” meaning ‘Yes we can’ and waved signs in support of the immigration programs.
“We are more than papers!” one sign read.
DACA provides protection from deportation to some 700,000 immigrants who were brought into the US illegally as children. In September, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the decision to rescind the program President Barack Obama issued via executive action in 2012.
Congress was given six months to pass a law that would regulate the status of so-called ‘Dreamers.’ That deadline is now just 50 days away.
The TPS program granted temporary visas that allow immigrants to live and work in the US and not be forced to return to their home countries. 321,220 immigrants from ten different countries in Central America and Africa are in the US under the TPS program, according to the Journal on Migration and Human Security. Many fled natural disasters and violence resulting from US-backed regime change wars.

Hundreds of National Football League (NFL) fans gathered outside AT&T Stadium in Texas before the game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, in a show of support for players who kneel during the national anthem.
The crowd of protesters, some of whom wore Colin Kaepernick jerseys, rallied around the statue of former NFL player and coach Tom Landry. They remained silent for half an hour once the national anthem was played inside the stadium, joining the wave of protests which has swept the league this season. Many of the demonstrators were also pictured raising their fists.
The action was directed by Freddy Haynes, a pastor at Friendship West Baptist Church, which is one of the largest predominately African American congregations in Dallas, to support “those NFL players who have been silenced by the NFL and the NFL team owners,” as stated in the description of the meeting’s Facebook page.
The Cowboys are one of the few NFL teams to have been relatively unaffected by the protests instigated by Kaepernick last season. Defensive lineman David Irving appears to be the only Cowboys player to have demonstrated by raising his fist at the end of the anthem on multiple occasions.
The Cowboys players’ preference to stand for the anthem, however, has frequently been associated with comments made by the team owner, Jerry Jones, who promised to bench athletes who “disrespect” the flag.
Pastor Haynes, who claims to follow “the narrative of what Colin Kaepernick originally took a knee for,” launched a “Justice for all movement” to support the NFL players “who are courageously protesting against police brutality and injustice against black and brown members of the community.”
One more protest action, also displayed on Sunday, took place outside NRG Stadium in Texas, where the Houston Texans hosted the Arizona Cardinals.
The demonstrators, among them members of the Texas Organizing Project, rapper K-Rino and state Rep. Ron Reynolds, reportedly called for Texans owner Bob McNair to step down, and chanted “McNair don’t care” and “We stand with Kaepernick.”

Tensions between the club owner and the Texans players escalated following McNair’s controversial remarks at the NFL meeting, where he reportedly said “we can’t have the inmates running the prison,” referring to the ongoing protests.
He later apologized for the comments, adding that the “inmates” comparison was not addressed to the players. Two days after the incident almost the entire Texans squad took a knee ahead of their game against the Seattle Seahawks in response to the team owner’s words.

French President Emmanuel Macron is in hot water over his remarks towards workers of a bankrupt plant who battle to save their jobs. He has been accused of “class contempt” after saying that instead of “creating havoc,” they should look for a job.
The 39-year-old French leader was visiting a training center in the Corrèze department in southwestern France on Wednesday. The city is some 100km from a GM&S auto-suppliers plant where workers staged repeated protests over job cuts.
Before the president’s visit the employees from the bankrupt plant gathered near the center of town, eager to ask the head of state about the fate of their company.
When Macron was told that another local factory, some 150km from GM&S was looking for workers, he said: “There are some who’d better go and see if they can have jobs there, rather than creating havoc.”
Macron, a former investment banker, was apparently referring to protests of GM&S employees. Some 280 jobs are on table after the plant went into receivership back in December – a form of bankruptcy in which a court-appointed trustee reorganizes the firm. After a planned takeover by French firm GMD, all but 120 jobs are expected to be axed.
Macron’s comment’s triggered waves of criticism on social media. His spokesman Bruno Roger-Petit, took to Twitter to explain that the president’s quote “was taken out of context.” Macron “reminded that the search for solutions on unemployment issue depends on all actors [government and workers],” he added.

However, there were many, including French politicians, who slammed Macron for the comment.
“Macron’s contempt towards the working class who is fighting for their jobs is the image of the budget proposed by his government,” Clémentine Autain, a member of the National Assembly tweeted.
#Macron son mépris de classe envers des salariés qui se battent pour leurs emplois est à l’image du budget proposé par son gouvernement @LCI

“1 job for 300 unemployed…’Get a job’, Macron has no idea what it is like [looking for a job],” Adrien Quatennens from La France Insoumise left-wing political party said. The party is headed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Macron’s presidential rival, who has repeatedly slammed his policies.
“Employees are fighting for their jobs. What Macron just did was his usual contempt for [the working] class,” Florian Philippot, a member of the European Parliament, who contributed to presidential campaign of right-wing Marine Le Pen, said.
Des salariés se battent pour leur boulot : tout ce que trouve à faire Macron c’est de ressortir son habituel mépris de classe. Insupportable https://t.co/slVORceW5k
— Florian Philippot (@f_philippot) October 4, 2017
“Macron never misses a chance to express his contempt for the French,” Valérie Boyer from the Republican Party wrote.
However, French Government spokesperson Christophe Castaner defended his ‘chef d’État’.
“A president should be able… to use the words that we all use all the time,” he said, as cited by BFMTV. “By saying ‘wreaking the havoc’ he [Macron] appealed to those who prevented GM&S employees from going to training centers.”
Macron’s ratings seem to have dropped significantly since his election. In September, the majority of French people said the policies of the recently-elected president were “unfair,” according to the Elabe online poll carried out in September.

Earlier the same month, Macron was harshly criticized for branding opponents of the labor reforms as being “lazy.” Quickly dubbed the ‘King of Slackers’ on Twitter, the French leader was undeterred, however, saying he has no regrets and aims to move the country forward.
Twitter also exploded with sarcasm a week ago after Macron reportedly told a former political rival, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, that “the king was elected four months ago,” apparently referring to his election victory in May.

On Friday President Trump derided NFL players who choose to kneel during the national anthem while speaking at a rally in Alabama, saying “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say ‘Get that son of a b—- off the field right now, out, he’s fired!'”
Since then, teams, players, and commissioner Roger Goodell have all responded with statements defending players’ right to kneel. Goodell said the president’s comments showed an “unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL.”
Sunday gave teams their first chance to demonstrate during the anthem in response to the president’s words, and teams across the league participated.
During the early games teams across the league demonstrated in various ways, with some teams standing arm-in-arm together and some with players both kneeling and standing with linked arms. Over an hour after kickoff, the president tweeted about the protests yet again, saying “Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable.”
You can take a look at how different teams chose to show solidarity below.

Sunday’s first game got started early in London. Some players on the Baltimore Ravens stood arm-in-arm during the anthem, while many others including Mike Wallace, Tony Jefferson, Terrell Suggs, and former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis chose to kneel.

On the Jacksonville sideline, it was a similar scene, with some players standing arm-in-arm and others choosing to take a knee. Eli Ankou, Tashaun Gipson, A.J. Bouye, and ten other Jaguars all knelt for the anthem. Also notable was the presence of Jaguars owner Shahid Khan.

In Minnesota, the Vikings chose to all stand together linking arms in a show of team unity. Members of the ownership and management were also present on the sideline.
