Add Verizon to the list of tech giants that can’t resist the temptation to offer their own virtual private network services. The carrier (and Engadget’s parent company) has released a Safe Wi-Fi app for Android that uses the encryption of a VPN to protect you against dodgy WiFi hotspots. Ideally, you won’t have to worry about a fake access point intercepting your data traffic at the airport or coffee shop. The app even blocks ad trackers that can lead to targeted marketing — yes, the telecom that got in trouble for aggressive ad tracking is now helping you avoid it.

There’s a recurring fee like with many apps, although the $ 4 per month you’ll pay is a bit of a bargain compared to other services. TunnelBear, for instance, amounts to $ 5 per month if you’re willing to pay on a yearly basis. The bigger gotcha may be the range of eligible devices. The app only secures up to 10 of the devices linked to your Verizon account. If you were hoping to use Verizon’s coverage for your WiFi-only tablet, you’ll have to look for a general-purpose alternative.

The news that Facebook fired an engineer who abused his power to stalk women has raised a question: can the social network raise alarm bells if one of its workers accesses private data? The answer appears to be yes — though you’ll currently have to work at Facebook to get a warning. The Wall Street Journal has learned that Facebook has a “Sauron alert” (yes, like Lord of the Rings‘ oppressive eye) that notifies employees when other staffers access their personal profiles. Everyday users only get notices of unusual login behavior, which could prove worrying if there is a case of abuse. However, Facebook may have a solution in the long run.

A spokesperson told the WSJ that Facebook has talked about offering “something similar” to Sauron for everyone, not just its own workers. The challenge is considering the implications, the company said. It doesn’t want to alert “bad actors” or spark “real world harm,” such as retaliation from an abusive partner.

The company’s internal policies are already designed to curb at least some abuse. Only a handful of employees have access to data without triggering the usual login alert, and those people are “closely monitored,” the WSJ‘s sources said. When they use their powers to access other accounts, they’re required to provide a valid reason for looking at a profile (managers inspect those reasons later) and ideally get permission in writing. If a worker ever gets one of those alerts, they can track down the reasoning in a bug report or talk to Facebook’s security team. “Multiple” workers have been fired over the years as a result.

There were already clues this system existed. Paavo Siljamäki, part of the trance trio Above & Beyond, noted in 2015 that Facebook didn’t need his login details after he gave them permission to access his account. This appears to be the first time outsiders have learned the extent of Facebook’s access and its ability to fight abuse, however. And the stalking incident exacerbates things — there’s a clear gap between safeguards for Facebook staff and everyday users, and there are instances where users could benefit from that added protection.

Silicon Valley royalty Anne Wojcicki may own a billion-dollar company, but she still tries to keep her life and her kids grounded.

Wojcicki, the cofounder and CEO of personal genomics company 23andMe and former wife of Google cofounder Sergey Brin, said she tries to protect their two children from the “insanity” of megawealth in an interview with The New York Times‘ Maureen Dowd.

“I have people who clean the house three days a week,” she told Dowd. “And I just told them to stop doing laundry on Fridays because my kids need to learn how to do laundry on Fridays. It’s so easy to be like, ‘I don’t have to do laundry again. I don’t have to cook again.’ But then you’re not normal. I have a new rule lately. I just don’t go out on weekdays. If I’m raising kids, I need to be focused on helping implement that normalcy.”

She also said that she cuts her children’s hair herself, and, to save time in the morning, sometimes lets them wear their clothes to bed.

“The other thing I used to do, when we’d travel in the summers, because I don’t like to pack a lot,” she told Dowd, “and so I’d have the kids bathe in their clothes and then they change into something else. And then their clothes are clean for the next day. Versus the hotel laundry, which is so expensive.”

As for how she keeps herself grounded, Wojcicki says she rides her bike to work every day (even in the rain), and doesn’t make “fancy cars and houses and the right dress” a priority.

Its muscle-relaxing properties will help patients to get a peaceful nights sleep, and will therefore help to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Magnesium helps more than 300 enzymes to work properly, and was vital for every metabolic reaction in the body, according to GP and medical nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

But, magnesium is lacking in daily diets, according to scientists.

Some people struggle to absorb the mineral, including those suffering with gastrointestinal problems like Crohn’s disease.

Taking magnesium supplements will help to improve health, but eating more magnesium-rich foods will also work.

Good sources of magnesium include dark chocolate, seafood, leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

TOBY Greene says he will use his knee for protection again if he finds himself in the same situation as he did with the Western Bulldogs’ Luke Dahlhaus three weeks ago at Etihad Stadium.

Speaking for the first time since he was reported and fined for the incident, Greene was apologetic for catching Dahlhaus in the mouth with his studs but said there was no intent to hurt him.

“I can’t guarantee in my next marking contest that I won’t protect myself with my knee,” he said.

It was a clash that divided the game. There was an argument that Greene had the right to protect the space around the ball from opponents. But others argued because it was a handball, and not a mark, Greene should not be allowed to fend off a tackler with his boot.

“That might have been the difference but it was still the same action,” Greene said.

“I was going up to mark the footy. It’s unfortunate I got Luke in the head but I didn’t mean to do that. I was just protecting the space.”

Greene was reported for incident, his fifth run in with the match review panel this year. He was suspended for a week for striking the Bulldogs’ Caleb Daniel in Round 6 and copped a two-match ban for punching Richmond’s Alex Rance in Round 18.

He maintains the Daniel clash was unintentional but the Rance blow was entirely his fault.

“The Rance thing was really stupid,” Greene said.

“The Daniel thing, I didn’t mean to hit him in the head but I guess if you play on the edge like I do, things like that are going to happen. I don’t think there was anything wrong with the Dahlhaus thing. I can’t control my reputation.”

Greene also revealed the Giants leadership group spoke with him after the Rance suspension.

“They were disappointed and don’t want me missing games,” Greene said.

“I’ve just got to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again. They’re in the leadership group for a reason. If these conversations have to be had, they have to be had.”

The talented small forward was again nominated for All-Australian honours this year and says he expects opposition teams to try to get under his skin but it’s just part of football.

“I just be more aware of it myself,” Greene said. “If people are going to come after me or niggle me, it’s about just being cool. You can’t really do anything these days so there’s no real point.”

Rival fans have also targeted Greene, with the Geelong faithful on his case at Simonds Stadium last Saturday night.

“The Cats’ crowd were all right,” Greene said. “I actually didn’t notice it too much compared to the Bulldogs game. It’s all part of it. It’s footy. It is what it is. I guess you feed off the notice but I don’t take anything in that gets said, or anything like that.”
