Naga Munchetty has been co-presenting BBC Breakfast for the latter half of the week for the past six years alongside Charlie Stayt. Together they have built a substantial repertoire with viewers and she is a well-respected interviewee when it comes to the big gigs the channel lands every morning. Last year, the host was inundated with support against the BBC after they ruled her comments about President Donal Trump a breach of guidelines. The decision was eventually reversed and Naga was in the clear. During a discussion with Radio Times, BBC Breakfast’s front-woman spoke out about the support she received from her colleagues at this time. Naga made the comments when she was sitting in for Louise Minchin and delivered the show with Dan Walker. She expressed personal concern after the US President said four congresswoman should “go back” to the “places from which they came”. BBC Breakfast viewers will remember Naga going off script and dwelling upon her own experiences of being told to go home in the UK. It was then reported that Naga had breached BBC guidelines as she suggested President Trump was guilty of racism, the corporations complaints unit decided. READ MORE: Naga Munchetty scolds Fiona Bruce for ‘bringing BBC’s tone down’ When asked whether it’s made her more circumspect about what she says on air Naga insisted “it’s absolutely business as usual.” Radio Times also spoke to Assistant Editor Mark Grannell of BBC Breakfast who said: “Naga’s a tough cookie, so she can look after herself. “But I think the Breakfast team is very protective of her, as a colleague. “And, on a human level, my sympathy was with Naga.” Rising levels of carbon dioxide in seawater could be a major threat to the planet’s shellfish population, with a new study showing how the pollutant stunts growth and strips away the protective shields of marine life. In a joint project by the UK’s University of Plymouth and the University of Tsukuba in Japan, researchers analysed the effect of the pollutant from a natural gas vent on the sea snail charonia lampas, or triton shellfish. READ MORE: Lobster pot: Restaurant gets shellfish high on marijuana prior to cooking Famous for its large colorful shell, the triton was once harvested for jewelry, like necklaces. The unique shellfish is now facing a very different and encompassing threat in the form of increasing carbon dioxide in the planet’s oceans. According to the new study, which featured in the peer-reviewed Frontiers in Marine Science journal, tritons were smaller in seawaters predicted to absorb higher levels of Co2. There is also a threat to the animal’s protective shell which is used to ward off potential predators. Thickness of triton shells displayed “visible deterioration” in waters off Shikine-jima island, Japan, where scientists studying ocean acidification have previously visited a gas vent near near Mikawa Bay. READ MORE: Woman lucky to survive after flying fish slits her throat (PHOTOS) Dr Ben Harvey, assistant professor in the University of Tsukuba’s Shimoda Marine Research Center, said the acidification of oceans is a “clear threat to marine life.” “Here we found that the ability of the triton shells to produce and maintain their shells was hindered by ocean acidification, with the corrosive seawater making them smoother, thinner, and less dense,” he explained. The evidence uncovered by researchers signals “profound consequences” for calcified sea creatures in the future, Harvey warned. Like this story? Share it with a friend!

Microsoft first launched HoloLens in 2015 as a gaming-centric consumer product, but so far, very few folks have so much as picked up a Minecraft block with the $ 3,000 device. Microsoft isn’t complaining, though. HoloLens has been a big success with businesses, allowing designers to visualize digital changes on real-life objects and helping employees do complex tasks or high-tech sales demos. In fact, it’s been so popular with companies that Microsoft is now expanding sales to 29 new European markets, taking the total up to 39 nations.
Microsoft says that companies like Ford and Thyssenkrupp have been asking for HoloLens availability in Spain, Sweden and Turkey, where it’s currently unavailable. The device has been particularly popular for so-called firstline workers that repair elevators or build cars, for instance. HoloLens provides such folks with valuable information like repair instructions overlaid directly onto real objects. At the same time, it’s hands-free and doesn’t disrupt normal vision.

On top of the new availability, the HoloLens is now certified for use as basic protective eyewear, with an IP50 rating for dust protection in construction zones, for instance. On top of that, “we’re happy to announce a HoloLens hard hat accessory is in production and will be available for purchase next year,” Microsoft HoloLens GM Lorraine Bardeen added in the blog post. Intel, for one, demoed a mixed reality headset with a built-in hard hat at CES 2016.
For the consumer market, Microsoft and its partners have launched several Windows Mixed Reality Headsets that are strictly for VR right now, with plans for mixed reality models to come later. However, it’s not planning to introduce a new HoloLens model until 2019. When it does arrive, it’ll reportedly be equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) chip that should greatly expand its capabilities.

NEW YORK (AP) — Following a frightening scene in the stands, the New York Yankees are making a move to keep their fans safe.
Eleven days after a 1-year-old girl was injured by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium, the team said it plans to expand protective netting at its home ballpark and spring training complex next year.
The club announced the decision during its final regular-season game Sunday against Toronto.
Since the girl was injured Sept. 20 by a 105 mph line drive off the bat of Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier, several teams have announced they plan to add more netting to better protect fans.
“That’s great. I think not only here, but every team should have it,” Frazier said. “It’s a good step forward for the Yankees, man. I’m very proud to say I’m playing for this team and they’re going to make this change, and it’s really nice.”
In a news release, the Yankees said they will “significantly expand” the netting this offseason at Yankee Stadium and Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. The team said while its current netting meets Major League Baseball recommendations, the additional netting planned for 2018 will exceed those guidelines.
“I think that anything that keeps our fans safe is good,” manager Joe Girardi said. “The ball is extremely hard, and sometimes reaction time isn’t good, and sometimes you’re blinded by the fans in front. So anything that keeps them safe, I’m all for it.”
The club did not say how far it will expand netting that currently extends from the corner of each dugout closest to home plate. The Yankees said they will continue to consult with “architects, engineers, netting manufacturers and Major League Baseball to analyze and determine the best and most appropriate type of netting material, color and installation methods.”
The team said it also has considered comments from fans.
“I think a lot of fans realize it, too,” Frazier said. “There’s always going to be fans who don’t and some fans who do. That’s always going to happen, but it’s the right thing to do. It really is. I think safety first.”
The decision was announced over the Yankee Stadium public address system after the third inning Sunday. There wasn’t much audible reaction from the crowd.
Frazier kept in regular contact with the girl’s family for a while but said he hasn’t spoken to them lately. He plans to invite them to meet when they’re ready.
“They kind of want to settle in and get back to normal life a little bit. Eventually, we’ll hook up here. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
Frazier said as far as he knows, the young girl is feeling better.
“To the best of my ability, with a couple of fractures and whatever it is, she’s probably still hurting a little bit right now. But she’s out of the hospital, so that’s a good sign,” he said. “He (the girl’s father) said he’s going to call me when everything is fine. So I’m not going to bother them. From here on out, I’ll just wait for them to call me and eventually we’ll hook up.”
In a story posted Sunday on the website of The New York Times, the girl’s father, Geoffrey Jacobson, said his daughter left the hospital on Sept. 25. He said she turns 2 this week.
Jacobson, who did not make public her name, said that when he first walked into her hospital room after the injury, her eyes were swollen shut. He said she had multiple facial fractures and had bleeding on her brain.
Jacobson told the Times that doctors didn’t yet know whether his daughter’s vision would return to normal or whether facial surgery would be necessary.
“While there are numerous medical follow-ups and some remaining medical questions to be answered, we can’t ignore how fortunate we are that our little girl is home,” Jacobson told the newspaper.
As to the Yankees announcement about extending the netting, he told the Times “it’s what they should have said from Day One, but I’m happy to hear this. I hope the remaining teams follow suit, because it’s not just about the Yankees.”
Jacobson is a real estate lawyer and said he hadn’t thought about taking legal action against the Yankees.
“As a lawyer, I know we have a statute of limitations. There’s a time and a place for that, but it’s not on my radar.”
About Frazier, Jacobson told the Times that “Not only is he a world-class athlete, but he is a better person and that is what really matters.”

GUEST:
LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman spoke this past May at the Tech Alliance luncheon in Seattle, and something he said got me thinking about Silicon Valley – and all innovation hubs — in a different way.
While interviewed on stage by angel investor Sarah Imbach, he called Silicon Valley “myopic” and urged people to pay attention to what’s going on in Seattle, the other tech hub where he now spends time as a startup investor and Microsoft board member.
Myopic is exactly right. And with that Silicon Valley and other innovation hubs risk losing their edge.
The innovation ecosystem in the Bay Area comes together like a non-linear neural network. There’s the perception that it is all self-organizing and efficient. They have ideas, networks, partners, teams, capital, and customers — it’s all there, and innovation can quickly scale.
But, at times, a myopic view can result in a follow-the-leader mentality. A case in point: In some instances venture capitalists give the appearance of a herd mentality by investing in trends they all see, at the same time.
In a place like Silicon Valley, resources do come together quickly. And what’s dangerous is pushing the same idea forward by a multitude of investors and entrepreneurs.
Oftentimes, everyone wants to jump in for fear of being left out. This is human nature. This attitude can result in VCs and entrepreneurs not taking risks and instead pursuing what the VC or entrepreneur next door is doing. The VC’s goal is to aggressively participate in the financing feeding frenzy at the right time so they can get a return. The entrepreneur might look for a fast and easy exit. This is where bubbles come from.
But a return or an exit is not innovation.
The problem is this: You cannot innovate with a consensus mindset.
Of course, there are still new and original ideas that completely transform a market. Examples include ride sharing and Netflix, but these are rare.
Mostly what we are seeing is that networks too often come together to do incremental things. They are not creating the next transistor chip or laser or next energy source. Certainly not with the frequency you would expect or we desire.
Innovation is more than just cool new apps.
An incremental mindset does not create breakthrough ideas. It creates, simply, temporary market penetration.
The Silicon Valley ecosystem itself – and Seattle too — can at times act like a big risk-averse company with a big balance sheet it’s trying to protect.
It’s Clayton Christianson’s Innovator’s Dilemma, applied to the whole network instead of a company.
Here’s the Innovator’s Dilemma: Once a company has successfully developed and launched an innovative product, it wants to produce it in a more efficient and profitable way rather than invest money in new, innovative, disruptive ideas. The dilemma is between investing in something new that could cannibalize the business now and letting upstart rivals run with the lower-end disruptive innovation that could blindside you later.
Some companies are working to break free of this dynamic that chooses scale over innovation.
Google is leveraging its success via Alphabet. Internet search is becoming progressively less profitable, so they are focused on innovative new areas like life sciences, robotics, and home automation.
Amazon is succeeding around retail and looking at it from different angles; case in point: its recent purchase of Whole Foods. Amazon is leveraging its expertise around operational efficiency to innovate in very different ways from the moonshot approach.
It’s time to change the myopic approach to innovation ecosystems. If we don’t make adjustments now, we’ll be talking about how the Innovators Dilemma is no longer an issue just for companies. It wil instead be an issue impacting innovation regions and entrepreneurial hubs like Silicon Valley and Seattle.
The time is now to disrupt the actual innovation process.
