Office of the President of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.
Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.
In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.
"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.
The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.
Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane. The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.
In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.
"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.
"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.
British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

A recent phishing campaign targeting US government officials, activists, and journalists is notable for using a technique that allowed the attackers to bypass two-factor authentication protections offered by services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail, researchers said Thursday. The event underscores the risks of 2fa that relies on one-tap logins or one-time passwords, particularly if the latter are sent in SMS messages to phones.
Attackers working on behalf of the Iranian government collected detailed information on targets and used that knowledge to write spear-phishing emails that were tailored to the targets’ level of operational security, researchers with security firm Certfa Lab said in a blog post. The emails contained a hidden image that alerted the attackers in real time when targets viewed the messages. When targets entered passwords into a fake Gmail or Yahoo security page, the attackers would almost simultaneously enter the credentials into a real login page. In the event targets’ accounts were protected by 2fa, the attackers redirected targets to a new page that requested a one-time password.
“In other words, they check victims’ usernames and passwords in realtime on their own servers, and even if 2 factor authentication such as text message, authenticator app or one-tap login are enabled they can trick targets and steal that information too,” Certfa Lab researchers wrote.

In early 2015, researchers unveiled Rowhammer, a cutting-edge hack that exploits unfixable physical weaknesses in the silicon of certain types of memory chips to transform data they stored. In the 42 months that have passed since then, an enhancement known as error-correcting code (or ECC) available in higher-end chips was believed to be an absolute defense against potentially disastrous bitflips that changed 0s to 1s and vice versa.
Research published Wednesday has now shattered that assumption.
Dubbed ECCploit, the new Rowhammer attack bypasses ECC protections built into several widely used models of DDR3 chips. The exploit is the product of more than a year of painstaking research that used syringe needles to inject faults into chips and supercooled chips to observe how they responded when bits flipped. The resulting insights, along with some advanced math, allowed researchers in Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s VUSec group to demonstrate that one of the key defenses against Rowhammer isn’t sufficient.

Tucked into an economic development bill signed by Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker earlier this month was a little-noticed provision that could have a big economic impact for Massachusetts workers. The language, introduced by state Rep. Lori Ehrlich, aims to rein in the abuse of employee noncompetition agreements in the state.
In a Thursday phone interview, Ehrlich told Ars that her work was motivated by hearing from hundreds of Massachusetts workers who had suffered from the abuse of noncompete laws. In one infamous case, a summer camp got a high school student to sign a noncompete agreement that effectively barred her from working at another summer camp the following year.
“We heard from people working at pizza parlors, yogurt shops, hairdressers, and people making sandwiches,” Ehrlich said. “Those stories were incredibly compelling and really drove the narrative for change.”

As acting director of the bureau, Mulvaney has already articulated his intention to slow down regulation of the financial industry. On Wednesday, he made good on that promise, in dramatic fashion—effectively ousting all 25 members of one of the bureau’s advisory boards. The dismantled group had previously been tasked with advising the agency on regulations related to fair lending and civil rights, among other issues.
Until today, the CFPB had four advisory bodies: the Academic Research Council, the Community Bank Advisory Council, the Credit Union Advisory Council, and the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB). Members of the CAB said that they were notified that they would no longer serve on the board, and that they could not reapply for positions, during a call on Wednesday morning with Anthony Welcher, who recently joined the Bureau as the Policy Associate Director for External Affairs.
In a statement released on Wednesday the Bureau said that it was starting the process of “right-sizing” its advisory councils as a response to a recent public comment period, which focused on external outreach and evaluation. Consumer advocates say there’s good reason to be skeptical, even alarmed, about this explanation.
“Firing current members of the advisory board is a huge red flag in this administration’s ongoing erosion of critical consumer financial protections that help average families,” Chi Chi Wu, an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center, and a CAB board member, said in a statement. “Apparently Acting Director Mulvaney is willing to listen to industry lobbyists who make campaign contributions, but not the statutorily appointed Consumer Advisory Board members.”
The bureau wasted no time launching a counterattack: “The Bureau has not fired anyone,” John Czwartacki, a spokesperson for the bureau, said in statement responding to criticism. “The outspoken members of the Consumer Advisory Board seem more concerned about protecting their taxpayer funded junkets to Washington, DC and being wined and dined by the Bureau than protecting consumers.”
The agency is required by law to meet twice a year with the Consumer Advisory Board to discuss trends in the financial industry, regulations, and the impact of financial products and practices on consumers. But Mulvaney, the agency’s interim director, has canceled meetings between the CFPB and its advisory groups several times during his short tenure. The move to eliminate the CAB comes after several board members expressed concern about the the acting director’s distance. Board members implored him to keep this week’s scheduled meeting on the books. (It, too, was canceled.)
Bureau officials say that the current board’s term will officially end directly before the next board meets for the first time—meaning, their tenure as advisors to the CFPB is abruptly over. The agency has said it will stand by the commitment to meet with its various advisory boards in the future, and will put together a new CAB board in the fall, with fewer members who are all limited to a one year term.
That promise is probably of little consolation to the many Democrats who have loudly opposed Mulvaney’s management of the agency, and warned that he would defang the Bureau. Given the interim director’s comments and actions thus far, it seems all but certain that any advisory board assembled by Mulvaney and his inner circle will have more conservative and corporate-friendly leanings, than the current board members appointed prior to the departure of Richard Cordray, an Obama-era appointee.
The swift dissolution of the CAB’s current membership raises many fresh questions. Since he took over, Mulvaney has slowed rulemaking and implementation of some of the Bureau’s most high-profile victories: including regulations on payday lending and rules that would force financial advisors to put customer interest ahead of their financial gain. Mulvaney has articulated a very specific vision for the Bureau: a smaller, leaner, and less active agency that does far less regulation and enforcement than it once did. Those ideals fit in neatly with the Trump administration’s vision of how government agencies should operate, and Mulvaney has proven time and again that he’s happy to abide by those parameters.

Human rights are largely considered fundamental standards for the treatment of people, defending against slavery, illegal arrest and persecution. But, some surprising inhuman entities have recently been granted person-like status.
From a sacred mountain, to a holy river and a talkative robot, here are five things that have been granted rights similar to that of human beings.
Mount Taranaki – New Zealand
The New Zealand government and eight local indigenous tribes signed a record of understanding in December, giving Mount Taranaki similar rights to a human being.
The 2,500 meter tall mountain is located in Egmont National Park, New Plymouth, and holds special significance to Maori peoples, who refer to it as an ancestor. Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little said the move provides the mountain with more protection, similar to those already afforded to two New Zealand rivers.
“The legal personality requirement recognises the mountain’s status in a similar approach taken with Te Urewera and Te Awa Tupua Whanganui River as all Crown-owned land within the National Park will be vested in a legal personality,”Little said.
Sophia the robot – Saudi Arabia
A humanoid named Sophia became the first-ever robot citizen in October, when it was granted the honor in Saudi Arabia. Sophia’s new found status was announced at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, where the bot stated her ‘pride’ at being upgraded to the position.
“I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction,” she said. “This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.”
Himalayan glaciers – India
The High Court of Uttarakhand gave the Gangotri and Yamunotri glaciers the same legal rights as a person earlier this year. Located in the Himalayas, the two freshwater resources have been receding for decades.
According to officials from the State of Uttarakhand, the move is an attempt to “uphold the status of these bodies and also to promote their health and well being.”
Ganges River – India
Similar to the Himalayan glaciers, the Uttarakhand High Court also granted India’s sacred River Ganges legal status similar to that of a person in March.
Meandering through 29 cities, the river is one of the most polluted bodies of water on the planet. Providing the river with rights tantamount to a human’s was seen as a step towards reclaiming the holy water from sewage and waste. However, the decision by Uttarakhand officials was eventually overturned by India’s Supreme Court.
Cecilia the chimpanzee – Argentina
A chimpanzee named Cecilia was freed from Argentina’s Mendoza Zoo – once home to the ‘world’s saddest’polar bear – after a judge granted a habeas corpus against the animal’s confinement.
The case was brought by the Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights, which described the recognition of Cecilia’s right to live outside an isolated enclosure as a “landmark” ruling. Cecilia arrived at the Great Apes Sanctuary in Brazil last April, where she is now able to spend time with other chimpanzees.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has issued a memo reversing protections for transgender workers previously expanded under the Civil Rights Act. Under the revision, Sessions said discrimination only applies to men and women.
“Title VII’s prohibition on sex discrimination encompasses discrimination between men and women but does not encompass discrimination based on gender identity per se, including transgender status,” Attorney General Sessions wrote in the memo issued Wednesday. “This is a conclusion of law, not policy.”
Title VII makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate in the employment of an individual “because of such individual’s…sex,” and Sessions argued “Sex” is ordinarily defined to mean biologically male or female,” and cited legal precedent.
Attorney General Sessions reversed a federal government policy yesterday that clarified transgender people are protected from sex discrimination in the workplace under Title VII.
— ACLU (@ACLU) October 5, 2017
The memo reverses an Obama administration interpretation that expanded Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to protect transgender workers under “sex-based considerations.”
The revisions could now open up people to discrimination in the workplace due to their gender identity.
Under most state and federal laws, trans people are not explicitly protected from discrimination in the workplace, housing, public accommodation and schools. This means a person can be fired from a job, evicted from a home or kicked out of a business because an employer or landlord or business owner doesn’t approve of the person’s gender identity.
LGBT advocates argue that federal civil rights law should already shield trans people from discrimination, based on their broader interpretation of the legal protections provided by a ban on sex discrimination.

Civil rights advocates have argued the law that bans sex discrimination in the workplace includes transgender people because discrimination against someone based on their gender identity is fundamentally rooted in sex-based discrimination. The Obama administration embraced this view of the federal law, as did the Equal Opportunity Commission, which often takes up workplace discrimination complaints.
Under Trump, the Justice Department in July filed a friend-of-the-court brief arguing against an LGBTQ-inclusive interpretation of Title VII. The filing comes in the a discrimination case before the United States Court of Appeals in New York involving Donald Zarda, a skydiving instructor, who lost his job after telling a customer he was gay, and subsequently sued the company under Title VII.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has reversed a federal government policy that said transgender workers were protected from discrimination under a 1964 civil rights law, according to a memo on Wednesday sent to agency heads and US attorneys.
Sessions’ directive, obtained by BuzzFeed News, says, “Title VII’s prohibition on sex discrimination encompasses discrimination between men and women but does not encompass discrimination based on gender identity per se, including transgender status.”
It adds that the government will take this position in pending and future matters, which could have far-reaching implications across the federal government and may result in the Justice Department fighting against transgender workers in court.
“Although federal law, including Title VII, provides various protections to transgender individuals, Title VII does not prohibit discrimination based on gender identity per se,” Sessions writes. “This is a conclusion of law, not policy. As a law enforcement agency, the Department of Justice must interpret Title VII as written by Congress.”
But Sharon McGowan, a former lawyer in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and now an attorney for the LGBT group Lambda Legal, countered that Sessions is ignoring a widespread trend in federal courts.
“It’s ironic for them to say this is law, and not policy,” McGowan told BuzzFeed News. “The memo is devoid of discussion of the way case law has been developing in this area for the last few years. It demonstrates that this memo is not actually a reflection of the law as it is — it’s a reflection of what the DOJ wishes the law were.”
“The sessions DOJ is trying to roll back the clock and pretend that the progress of the last decade hasnt’ happened,” she added. “The Justice Department is actually getting back in the business of making anti-transgender law in court.”
The memo reflects the Justice Department’s aggression toward LGBT rights under President Trump and Sessions, who reversed Obama-era guidance that protects transgender students after a few weeks in office. Last month, Sessions filed a brief at the Supreme Court in favor of a Christian baker who refused a wedding cake to a gay couple. And last week, the department argued in court that Title VII doesn’t protect a gay worker from discrimination, showing that Sessions will take his view on Title VII into private employment disputes.
At issue in the latest policy is how broadly the government interprets Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which does not address LGBT rights directly. Rather, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.
But the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an independent agency that enforces civil rights law in the workplace, and a growing body of federal court decisions have found sex discrimination does include discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sex stereotyping — and that Title VII therefore bans anti-transgender discrimination as well.
Embracing that trend, former attorney general Eric Holder under President Obama announced the Justice Department would take that position as well, issuing a memo in 2014 that said, “I have determined that the best reading of Title VII’s prohibition of sex discrimination is that it encompasses discrimination based on gender identity, including transgender status. The most straightforward reading of Title VII is that discrimination ‘because of … sex’ includes discrimination because an employee’s gender identification is as a member of a particular sex, or because the employee is transitioning, or has transitioned, to another sex.”
But Sessions said in his latest policy that he “withdraws the December 15, 2014, memorandum,” and adds his narrower view that the law only covers discrimination between “men and women.”
“The Department of Justice will take that position in all pending and future matters (except where controlling lower-court precedent dictates otherwise, in which event the issue should be preserved for potential future review),” Sessions writes.
Sessions adds: “The Justice Department must and will continue to affirm the dignity of all people, including transgender individuals. Nothing in this memorandum should be construed to condone mistreatment on the basis of gender identity, or to express a policy view on whether Congress should amend Title VII to provide different or additional protections.”
Devin O’Malley, a spokesperson for the Justice Department, explained the decision to issue the memo, telling BuzzFeed News, “The Department of Justice cannot expand the law beyond what Congress has provided. Unfortunately, the last administration abandoned that fundamental principle, which necessitated today’s action. This Department remains committed to protecting the civil and constitutional rights of all individuals, and will continue to enforce the numerous laws that Congress has enacted that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.”
McGowan, from Lambda Legal, counters, “The memo is so weak and that analyis is so thin, that courts will recognize it for what it is — a raw political document and not sound legal anylsis that should be given any weight by them.”
