US sanctions & protectionism strengthen bonds between Russia and China https://briefnews.eu/us-sanctions-protectionism-strengthen-bonds-between-russia-and-china/ https://briefnews.eu/us-sanctions-protectionism-strengthen-bonds-between-russia-and-china/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2018 07:25:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-sanctions-protectionism-strengthen-bonds-between-russia-and-china/ Energy ties between China and Russia will see deeper development as the neighboring countries are planning to jointly work on the Arctic shelf projects, according to Igor Sechin, CEO of Russia’s biggest oil company Rosneft.

“New growth points in Russian-Chinese cooperation could be joint development of the oil and gas resources on the shelves of the Arctic and Russia’s Far East, as well as development of navigation along the Northern Sea Route,” Sechin said at the first Russian-Chinese Energy Forum in Beijing.

The project, aimed at creating a major electrical power complex in the Far East region, looks promising, according to the Rosneft chief. The complex, which will reportedly be powered by coal and renewable energy, will mainly export energy to China.

“We may also boost cooperation in petrochemicals and gas processing,” Sechin said. “We see synergies from these interactions, Chinese banking services are more in demand, there is the opportunity to build vertically integrated networks and we have opportunities to work together in other countries.”

Over the past years, Moscow and Beijing have significantly increased energy cooperation, as energy-rich Russia has been using its proximity to China to reach the Asian nation’s growing market.

Moreover, both countries have found themselves in the middle of geo-political and trade tensions instigated by Washington. Numerous US sanctions against Russia, as well as the current trade spat between Washington and Beijing have forced China and Russia to further boost their partnership.

“Amid the politics of unilateral action and trade protectionism, strengthening Russia-China energy cooperation is extremely important for jointly securing energy security and shaping an open world economy,” China’s First Deputy Prime Minister Han Zheng said.

So it continued this week when the American president made comments that could signal a big escalation in the two countries’ trade war—or that a resolution is near. “I think we’ll make a great deal with China,” he told Fox News in an interview. But, he added, if talks sputter, America will impose tariffs on all goods from China. Having already hit $ 250bn-worth of annual Chinese imports with tariffs, America could target the remaining $ 267bn.

A bilateral meeting between Mr Trump and Xi Jinping, China’s president, later this month at a G20 summit in Buenos Aires should determine which outcome is more likely. First, though, Mr Xi will be pressing China’s case in the court of global opinion. On November 5th he will open a huge trade show in Shanghai designed to demonstrate to the world that China’s…

THE post-war system of global trade has been close to expiring, seemingly, for most of the post-war period. It tottered in the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan muscled trading partners into curbing their exports to America. It wobbled with the end of the fruitless Doha round of trade talks. The system now faces the antediluvian economics of President Donald Trump, who seems bent on its destruction.

Mr Trump’s mercantilism is gaining steam. Straight after saying he would slap hefty tariffs on aluminium and steel imports, he is setting his sights on China, a favourite stump-speech bogeyman. This week he blocked the takeover of an American chipmaker by a Singaporean rival, because of fears of Chinese technological leadership. He is poised to act against China over its theft of intellectual property and its trade surplus.

And yet global trade has proven itself to be remarkably resilient. An optimist could argue that, historically, it is big political realignments that overturn trade-policy…

Markets fret about America’s turn toward protectionism https://briefnews.eu/markets-fret-about-americas-turn-toward-protectionism/ https://briefnews.eu/markets-fret-about-americas-turn-toward-protectionism/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 20:45:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/markets-fret-about-americas-turn-toward-protectionism/

IN THE run-up to the presidential election of 2016, investors were nervous about Donald Trump. They liked his tax-cutting, anti-regulation promises, but fretted about his foreign and trade policies. Some dubbed the two agendas “Trump lite” and “Donnie Darko”.

Almost as soon as it became clear that Mr Trump would become president, the markets decided to believe in the optimistic version. His tweeting and decision-making may have been erratic, but investors seemed to forgive the president his peccadilloes as a wife might her errant husband: “He may not be faithful but he’s a good provider.”

Fears about trade conflict almost disappeared. In last month’s survey of global fund managers by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, just 5% regarded a trade war between America and China as the biggest risk facing the markets, compared with 45% who worried about a return of inflation or a crash in the bond markets.

The announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminium on March 1st thus came as a…

Russia calls economic sanctions one of the worst forms of protectionism https://briefnews.eu/russia-calls-economic-sanctions-one-of-the-worst-forms-of-protectionism/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-calls-economic-sanctions-one-of-the-worst-forms-of-protectionism/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 11:40:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-calls-economic-sanctions-one-of-the-worst-forms-of-protectionism/

Russian economy minister has urged the World Trade Organization (WTO) to make global trade free from sanctions.
Maksim Oreshkin has called on the trade body to put an end to what he called a “degrading phenomenon.”

“We’ve been facing a rise in one of the most aggressive forms of protectionism in recent years. I mean sanctions. We have enough evidence proving that protection of companies and their preference on the domestic market is one of the reasons for imposing sanctions against partners in the WTO,” he said at the WTO ministerial conference in Buenos Aires.

“We should make the global trade system free from this degrading phenomenon.”

According to the Russian minister, global trade is facing many challenges, although growth exceeded three percent this year. “The expansion of isolationist and anti-competitive practices poses a threat to openness and fairness of global trade,” said Oreshkin.

“The WTO must join current global reforms and adapt to the current realities to withstand turbulent times,” he added.

The minister also suggested taking measures to promote investment and electronic commerce, as well as to increase the transparency of WTO procedures.

How protectionism sank America’s entire merchant fleet https://briefnews.eu/how-protectionism-sank-americas-entire-merchant-fleet/ https://briefnews.eu/how-protectionism-sank-americas-entire-merchant-fleet/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 01:21:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-protectionism-sank-americas-entire-merchant-fleet/

IN APRIL 1956 the world’s first container ship—the Ideal X—set sail from New Jersey. A year later in Seattle the world’s first commercially successful airliner, Boeing’s 707, made its maiden flight. Both developments slashed the cost of moving cargo and people. Boeing still makes half the world’s airliners. But America’s shipping fleet, 17% of the global total in 1960, accounts for just 0.4% today.

Blame a 1920 law known as the Jones Act, which decrees that trade between domestic ports be carried by American-flagged and -built ships, at least 75% owned and crewed by American citizens. After Hurricane Irma, a shortage of Jones-Act ships led President Donald Trump on September 28th to waive the rules for ten days to resupply Puerto Rico. This fuelled calls to repeal the law completely.

Like most forms of protectionism, the Jones Act hits consumers hard. A lack of foreign competition drives up the cost of coastal transport. Building a…

Japan and the EU are trying to make the US think twice about protectionism https://briefnews.eu/japan-and-the-eu-are-trying-to-make-the-us-think-twice-about-protectionism/ https://briefnews.eu/japan-and-the-eu-are-trying-to-make-the-us-think-twice-about-protectionism/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2017 08:02:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japan-and-the-eu-are-trying-to-make-the-us-think-twice-about-protectionism/ Raffaele Mauro Petriccione Yoichi SuzukiREUTERS/Issei Kato

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese and European Union negotiators meeting in Tokyo aim to reach a free trade deal that would stand against a protectionist tide threatening the global economy, and make the United States think twice over pursuing inward-looking policies.

Japan and the EU have been negotiating since 2013, but talks have intensified since last week, with almost daily meetings to overcome key hurdles, including tariffs on Japanese automobiles and car parts and European wine, cheese, pasta and other foods.

A Japan-EU deal could leave U.S. firms at a disadvantage, especially after President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, earlier this year.

“There is an atmosphere among negotiators that Japan and the EU need to stop protectionism that is prevailing in the world,” said a source familiar with the issue who declined to be identified because talks are ongoing.

“The momentum is building for Japan and the EU to take leadership in promoting and executing free trade.”

In a sign of optimism, EU trade chief Cecilia Malmstrom said on Monday she could sign a provisional deal with Japan as early as next week.

An agreement between the EU and Japan would “send a strong message to the United States that free trade is important and that you shouldn’t be too inward looking,” said another source, who declined to be named while negotiations were underway.

Trump favors bilateral trade deals over multilateral accords and his decision to walk away the TPP, left the other 11 members of the Pacific Rim trading bloc, including Japan, in limbo.

Although, together Japan and the EU account for about a third of global GDP, their trade relationship has a lot of room to grow – EU forecasts reckon by as much as a third.

Their bilateral trade totaled $ 144 billion last year, whereas Japan-China trade was $ 262 billion and Japan-US trade was $ 192 billion.

After unsuccessful attempts to conclude a deal with Tokyo the past two years, there is a sense in the EU camp that people will start to lose faith if they cannot wrap it up this year, an EU official familiar with the talks said.

Japan wants to phase out the EU’s 10 percent tariff on Japanese passenger cars over the next five to 10 years and scrap a 4 percent tariff on many car parts. The Europeans, meanwhile, would like Japan to reduce its 15 percent tariff on wine and up to 30 percent on cheese.

For now, the Japanese side is digging in on dairy.

“Our number of dairy farmers is in decline, but we have a plan to strengthen our dairy industry, so I would like to ask for understanding,” Agriculture Minister Yuji Yamamoto told reporters on Tuesday. “I don’t think there is room to compromise any further.”

An agreement would put American companies at a disadvantage in Japan because they compete against European businesses in many of the same markets, said Junichi Sugawara, senior research officer at Mizuho Research Institute.

It could even be used by Tokyo to convince Washington to rejoin the TPP, he said.

“The U.S. side is likely to come at Japan with strong requests for better market access, but Japan can use a deal with the EU as leverage to lure the United States back to TPP,” he said.

$45 BILLION HEDGE FUND BOSS: Protectionism is ‘a convenient fig leaf for the shortcomings of US business leaders’ https://briefnews.eu/45-billion-hedge-fund-boss-protectionism-is-a-convenient-fig-leaf-for-the-shortcomings-of-us-business-leaders/ https://briefnews.eu/45-billion-hedge-fund-boss-protectionism-is-a-convenient-fig-leaf-for-the-shortcomings-of-us-business-leaders/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2017 13:23:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/45-billion-hedge-fund-boss-protectionism-is-a-convenient-fig-leaf-for-the-shortcomings-of-us-business-leaders/ David Siegel Two SigmaTwo Sigma

Add David Siegel, co-founder of $ 45 billion hedge fund Two Sigma Investments, to the list of those warning against protectionism.

In an op-ed on LinkedIn, Siegel recites a recent trip to an Abu Dhabi camel farm, which he toured in a “comfortable, Japanese-made SUV.” His host explained that everyone used to drive American cars, but they don’t stack up anymore.

“As US policymakers wrestle with how to stanch (if not reverse) the decline of manufacturing employment and alleviate the US trade deficit, my thoughts often return to that conversation in the desert, and to many others like it,” he said.

From the op-ed:

We hear a lot about how both automation and globalization have affected factory jobs here at home. It’s true that repetitive manual and cognitive tasks are increasingly likely to be automated, and that labor costs in developing countries remain far below those of the developed world. When it comes to solutions, however, I see a concerning sign: trade protectionism is once again becoming the response to dwindling factory payrolls and a swollen trade deficit.

The recent re-embrace of this warmed-over policy seems more like a convenient fig leaf for the shortcomings of US business leaders than a viable answer. The qualities that have driven US economic growth and job creation in the past–creativity, risk taking, and innovation–are what will actually help rekindle demand for US-made products overseas, and for American labor.

The rise of protectionism has been a hot topic of late, given the UK’s decision to leave the EU and the election of Donald Trump at US president. Trump made the debate over free trade one of the central topics of his campaign. He argued in favor of ripping up trade deals, said NAFTA was “the worst trade deal in the history of the country,” and called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, “a rape of our country.”

Back in February, Jeff Immelt, then CEO of GE, said America “will be less of a leader in trade” in the coming years. And in June, Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, said Trump was showcasing a tendency to choose the part over the whole. Trump’s actions are leaving people scrambling to figure out which Americans Trump is trying to help, such as American manufacturing workers, and at the expense of whom, Dalio wrote.

In his op-ed, Siegel cites Boeing, Apple, and Google as examples of American companies that have prospered globally, and touched on why protectionism was proving popular:

Those supporting increased trade barriers often couch it in terms of “leveling the playing field.” That is well and good, but my sense is that some simply hope to make it easier for US companies to compete in the global marketplace with inferior products or insufficient effort. Nobody claims making great products is easy, but again, this attitude is not a recipe for reviving American manufacturing employment. There is simply no substitute for doing the hard work of learning local markets.

The op-ed concluded:

Automation and competition from overseas will remain stiff headwinds for U.S. manufacturing employment. But we shouldn’t make excuses and hope protectionism will save the day. The only way for American manufacturers to succeed is through an uncompromising commitment to innovation.
