The current political deliberations, widely centred on potential outcomes of a Brexit deal, no deal, and a vote of no confidence in the UK leader, will not impact passengers travelling on cruise liners, it has been confirmed. The messy negotiations on Tuesday, saw the Conservative leader’s Brexit divorce proposal shunned in what was the worst ever House of Commons defeat suffered by a head of Government. Mrs May’s suggestions received the backing of 230 members, yet 432 – including some in her own party – turned against her to vote down the proposal. The scale of the defeat sparked Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to table a motion of no confidence in Mrs May’s Government.

Throughout the Brexit chaos, UK residents have been worried about the impact severing ties with the European Union will have on travel.

There have been suggestions airline fees will rise, queues at security will lengthen and holidaymakers will be offered poorer protection while overseas.

Yet apparently bucking the trend, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) UK & Ireland has predicted a rise in the number of British cruise passengers in 2019, despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

Meanwhile, both the British Government and Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) have also provided reassurances about travel arrangements taking place after 29 March 2019.

They have stated that, from 29 March, if there is a no-deal Brexit, cruise operations will continue as they are.

Cruise passengers departing from a UK port be protected by EU regulation on maritime passengers’ rights as it will be brought into UK law.

Regardless of the outcome of Brexit, aeroplanes will continue to fly between the UK and EU.

Andy Harmer, director of CLIA UK & Ireland, said: “We welcome this advice and hopes it reassures UK and EU citizens planning a cruise holiday.

“2019 is an exciting time for the cruise industry with 24 new ships being delivered for ocean and river cruise lines, and many existing ships being renovated and refurbished to a standard that rivals even the finest land-based hotels.

“Never before has there been so much choice for customers in terms of style of ship, itinerary and onboard experiences.”

He added: “The global fleet development, new destinations to explore, plus recent reassurances from authorities surrounding Brexit, put British travel agents in a great position to tempt their customers to choose cruise in 2019, whether it’s for the first time, or as repeat guests.”

In further positive news for the cruise sector, the number of cruises between January and September 2018 rose by 2.1 percent from 1.31million to 1.34million in 2018. Experts have insisted the sector is strong going into 2019.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what Brexit outcome will be reached by the UK Parliament as negotiations continue.

Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has tabled a second vote of no confidence in Theresa May’s Government.

  • Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made his first public remarks about the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting Monday, saying that law enforcement must make sure that all Americans are protected from hate crimes.
  • A man killed 11 Jewish worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday and injured several others.
  • Rosenstein also announced that the US Justice Department created a new website containing information about how to report a hate crime.
  • Rosenstein, who is Jewish, also praised President Donald Trump for condemning anti-semitism in America.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein declared on Monday that it is the duty of law-enforcement officers to ensure that “all Americans” are protected from hate crimes.

Rosenstein made these remarks days after a gunman fatally shot 11 Jewish worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Brexit: Could your EHIC card be invalid post-2019? How your health may not be protected https://briefnews.eu/brexit-could-your-ehic-card-be-invalid-post-2019-how-your-health-may-not-be-protected/ https://briefnews.eu/brexit-could-your-ehic-card-be-invalid-post-2019-how-your-health-may-not-be-protected/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 00:21:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brexit-could-your-ehic-card-be-invalid-post-2019-how-your-health-may-not-be-protected/

Brexit is less than one year away with the UK to leave the EU on March 29 next year.

Travel industry experts have raised concerns regarding a number of issues such as visa controls and open sky agreements.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary has been vocal in his concerns that planes could even be grounded if an agreement is not made.

However another aspect to cause concern is the continuation of the EHIC card, which provides free emergency care to people in the EU and affects 27 million Britons.

Could Britons be left stranded abroad without urgent health care?

The EHIC card currently allows Britons to get free or reduced healthcare when travelling to countries in the EU.

It is not a replacement for travel insurance but it allows Britons to use healthcare services abroad.

However, there may not be a guarantee that this will continue with the UK is no longer part of the EU.

The Lords EU committee report in March stated: “In the absence of an agreement on future relations that covers this topic, the rights to reciprocal healthcare currently enjoyed by 27 million UK citizens, thanks to the EHIC, will cease after Brexit.”

Yet there is another way in which the UK could be included, by looking at countries outside of the EU which are still allowed to reap the benefits.

The European Economic Area (EEA) nations include Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Switzerland is not part of either the EU or EAA but does have the same rights.

They are also covered by the existing healthcare arrangements despite not being in the EU, something which the UK could decide to do instead.

The Lords EU committee also stated: “‘Without more detail from the Government about how exactly it intends to maintain reciprocal healthcare arrangements or provide a suitable replacement, this report argues that we should not take the future of UK-EU reciprocal healthcare for granted.”

Yet Britons should also always take out travel insurance which will protect them from emergency health problems when travelling Europe.

ABTA’s director of public affairs Alan Wardle told TTG: “What needs to happen now is for the government to make progress setting out what the future relationship will look like.”

EHIC cards are currently free for British citizens and cover people for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions when abroad.

However, it does not cover treatment that is not currently offered in a country to its own citizens.

Many may not realise that theirs has expired, with 5.3 million in 2016 travelling with one that had ended.

Martin Lewis warned travellers to check point nine on the card which has the date it is valid.

A CRUISE spans hundreds of miles out into the middle of an ocean so what would happen if something went wrong, would you be protected in a medical emergency. A new report from Allianz Global Assistance may suggest otherwise.

Gove’s armada: UK fishing stocks to be protected from EU trawlers post-Brexit https://briefnews.eu/goves-armada-uk-fishing-stocks-to-be-protected-from-eu-trawlers-post-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/goves-armada-uk-fishing-stocks-to-be-protected-from-eu-trawlers-post-brexit/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2017 08:55:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/goves-armada-uk-fishing-stocks-to-be-protected-from-eu-trawlers-post-brexit/

British fishing stocks will be guarded from EU nations’ trawlers by a post-Brexit armada. Environment Secretary Michael Gove will get his own navy to prevent French, Spanish and other boats from fishing illegally in UK waters.

Under a new ship-building program, £350 million ($ 467 million) is being spent on four powerful fishery-protection vessels, one of which will be used in the Falklands. Another one of the boats, HMS ‘Forth,’ is currently undergoing sea trials before entering service in 2018, equipped with a 30mm gun, machine guns and a helicopter.

The boats could be backed up by long-range drones and satellite technology, which will detect any vessel straying into UK waters. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will fund the surveillance of UK waters with a multi-million-pound contract under the Marine Management Organization.

“Leaving the EU means we will take back control of our waters. Access will be subject to negotiation, and will support a thriving future for our fishing sector,” said Defra. “We are reviewing all aspects of fishery management, including satellites, patrol vessels and aerial surveillance.”

The fisheries issue has caused extreme tensions between member states, and is likely to resurface during Brexit negotiations. Around one third of the EU’s stocks are fished from British waters, and heads of state are likely to push hard to get access to them. Danish, French and Spanish operators have said they will challenge any attempt to keep them out of UK waters.

Rumors of French-backed blockades are beginning to emerge over suggestions that Channel ports could be cut off for the British. South West Fish Producer Organization’s Jim Portus said the operation must be intelligence led.

He said: “Yes, there are risks of port blockades, especially by the French.

“They do it so often. But we already have technology like satellites, plus CCTV cameras on many vessels. There will be 1,000 UK fishing vessels just itching to report any illegal activity.”

Any rules designed for the post-Brexit period must be enforceable, or Britain risks being laughed at by Brussels, according to Admiral Lord West, a former first sea lord. He revealed in the House of Lords the Fishery Protection Squadron currently in place covers 80,000 square miles of territorial waters, usually with one of three old vessels.

The squadron boarded 278 fishing vessels in 2016-17, falling dramatically from 1,400 in 2011-12.

The Federal Communications Commission is still on track to eliminate net neutrality rules this Thursday, but the commission said today that it has a new plan to protect consumers after the repeal.

The FCC and Federal Trade Commission released a draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) describing how the agencies will work together to make sure ISPs keep their net neutrality promises.

After the repeal, there won’t be any rules preventing ISPs from blocking or throttling Internet traffic. ISPs will also be allowed to charge websites and online services for faster and more reliable network access.

A federal judge in California has ruled in favor of the Electronic Frontier Foundation after the organization was recently sued over its “Stupid Patent of the Month” blog posts. As a result, the advocacy group is not required to remove a recent post simply because an Australian patent entity (often called “trolls”) doesn’t like it.

The case began back in April 2017 when EFF countersued an Australian company that it previously dubbed as a “classic patent troll” in a June 2016 blog post entitled: “Stupid Patent of the Month: Storage Cabinets on a Computer.”

In 2016, that company, Global Equity Management (SA) Pty. Ltd. (GEMSA), managed to get an Australian court to order EFF to remove its post—but EFF did not comply. In January 2017, Pasha Mehr, an attorney representing GEMSA, further demanded that the article be removed and that EFF pay $ 750,000. EFF still left the post up and then sued regarding the Australian court’s injunction.

Nearly half of US college students believe hate speech should not be protected https://briefnews.eu/nearly-half-of-us-college-students-believe-hate-speech-should-not-be-protected/ https://briefnews.eu/nearly-half-of-us-college-students-believe-hate-speech-should-not-be-protected/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 01:36:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nearly-half-of-us-college-students-believe-hate-speech-should-not-be-protected/ charlottesville richard spencerChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

A new survey on American college students’ views on free speech reveals that nearly half believe hate speech should not be protected under the First Amendment.

The report, a project of the pro-free speech organization Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), found that 48 percent of students do not think the First Amendment should protect hate speech. Thirty-five percent of students do think hate speech should be protected.

According to the study, 58 percent of students think it is important not to be exposed to “intolerant or offensive ideas.” Respondents who labeled themselves Democrats were 19 percentage points more likely than those who identified as Republican to believe there are instances when speakers should be disinvited by a university. Disinviting speakers is supported by 78% of “very liberal” students and by 38% of “very conservative” students.

The survey aimed to offer a representative snapshot of students’ political views on an average American campus, but Nico Perrino, an organization spokesperson, noted that all of the results, collected from some 1,200 students by YouGov between May 25 and June 8, may have changed following August’s events in Charlottesville, where a white supremacist march left one counter-protester dead.

“For a lot of people, Charlottesville was a Rubicon moment,” said Perrino, host of the FIRE free speech podcast “So to Speak.”

Open-ended questions on what qualifies as “hate speech” received a variety of answers, but almost half included racism. Thirteen percent of students responded in the affirmative that racist speech is a form of violence.

FIRE has three more surveys planned, including one on student views of due process expected to come out in Spring 2018.

The survey’s release follows an event on viewpoint diversity Tuesday night at New York University, co-hosted by FIRE and the Heterodox Academy, an academic freedom group.

Four professors from across the political spectrum discussed research that shows that, for the first time, children are more accepting of authoritarianism than their parents, and the upshot of this attitude on campus is a climate of ideological intolerance.
