The regulator has adopted a policy statement detailing how it will tackle gig workers' problems. The FTC plans to step in when there are misrepresentations about pay, costs, benefits and work terms. Officials also expect to intervene with "unfair or deceptive" algorithms, harsh contracts and anti-competitive behavior such as wage fixing and monopoly-creating mergers.

The Commission said the classification of workers wouldn't affect enforcement, so companies can't avoid repercussions by classifying people as contractors instead of employees. Violators may have to pay fines and change their practices, and the FTC could partner with other government bodies (such as the Justice Department and National Labor Relations Board) to address issues.

There are gaps. It could be difficult for the FTC to prove algorithm-driven abuse, for instance, and it's not clear which non-contractual "restraints" might hurt workers' freedom of movement. However, this could still serve as a warning to gig companies that might hide steep operating costs, fight unionization efforts or collude with rivals to keep wages low.

The FTC isn't alone in hoping to improve the lot of gig workers. A bipartisan measure in Congress, introduced to the House and Senate this February, is meant to provide portable benefits to gig workers. Last year, the Labor Department revoked a rule that made it harder to protect those workers' labor rights. States and cities have also filed lawsuits and otherwise taken efforts to bolster working conditions. However, the FTC's policy provides an extra, nationwide safeguard that might further discourage attempts to exploit the gig economy.

Ireland’s data regulator has fined Instagram 405 million euro for violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation and failing to safeguard children’s information.

The fine from the Data Protection Commission followed a two-year investigation into the Meta-owned social media platform. The investigation covered complaints that Instagram defaulted the accounts of all users, including those under the age of 18, to public settings. It also related to how the contact information of children using business accounts on the platform was publicly available.

Instagram, which allows users over the age of 13, said the fine related to old settings that were updated more than a year ago. It said it had released features to keep teenagers’ information private, including automatically setting children’s accounts to private when they sign up since July last year.

The modern stove probably doesn't make you think about protecting forests. A group backed by the United Nations wants to change that in hopes of unlocking billions of dollars in funding for a little-known climate solution.

Some 2.4 billion people in the developing world lack access to "clean cooking," instead preparing food on wood and charcoal fire pits or inefficient kerosene stoves. The carbon-dioxide emissions are on par with the entire airline industry — about 2% of the global total — and exposure to soot shaves years off the lives of those who cook, who are often women and children.

There is also a cost to nature: More than one-third of the wood harvested for fuel isn't replenished, which contributes to forest degradation and threatens growing investment in nature-based climate solutions, according to a report out this week from the Clean Cooking Alliance.

"Lack of access to clean cooking is the most underinvested health and environmental problem in the world," Jillene Connors Belopolsky, the alliance's chief of staff and chief external-affairs officer, said. "It's historically been viewed as a women's issue."

The alliance works to spur adoption of stoves that meet international standards for indoor air quality, including those that use liquefied petroleum gas, biogas or ethanol. Electric stoves and pressure cookers also make the list.

Even though liquefied petroleum gas is a fossil fuel, it pollutes less than wood and coal and is the most cost-effective solution in sub-Saharan Africa, where the vast majority of households lack access to clean cooking and electricity, Belopolsky said. Farming communities also offer an opportunity in the region because animal and crop waste can be converted into biogas and ethanol.

But scaling clean cooking is hamstrung by a lack of financing from wealthier countries and the private sector, similar to most climate efforts in the "global south," which faces the direst impacts of global warming but has contributed the least to the crisis. Investment has hovered around $ 130 million annually, well below the $ 4.5 billion needed, according to estimates.

Connecting clean cooking to nature could unlock more funding. About $ 133 billion flows into forest protection and restoration, sustainable land management, and other nature-based projects, with calls to triple that sum this decade. If a fraction of that was funneled into clean cooking, it could make a big impact, Belopolsky said.

The Clean Cooking Alliance has advised more developing countries to put clean cooking in their climate-action plans and says investors and corporations should consider how the transition to cleaner cooking can make their investments less risky.

"You can't tell people they can't use the natural resources around them to feed their families without providing an affordable alternative," Belopolsky said. "If we invest billions of dollars to protect or restore forests or implement regenerative agricultural practices, but communities that live around those projects don't have access to clean cooking and are collecting wood, that's counterproductive and a risk to that investment."

There are signs the message is resonating. Between 2017 and 2020, the revenue that clean-cooking companies made from selling carbon offsets grew by 21 times. In 2020, Switzerland and Peru were the first countries to strike a carbon-offset deal under the framework of the Paris climate accord, which included clean-cooking projects. Switzerland provided the finance and eventually plans to count the emissions reductions toward its climate goals.

The European Union is sending 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine so it can protect civilians in the event of a serious accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been caught in the middle of ongoing fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukraine requested last week that the EU donate potassium iodide tablets as a "preventative safety measure," European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) said in a Tuesday statement. Doing so would provide civilians near the plant — which has seen increasing hostilities — with protection from potential radiation exposure.

A nuclear accident can lead to radioactive iodine being breathed into the lungs and then quickly absorbed by the thyroid gland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Potassium iodide can block radioactive iodine from ending up in the gland.

When a person takes the potassium iodide tablets, the thyroid gland takes in the medicine and is not able to absorb any more radioactive iodine, the CDC said. 

Five million of the tablets are coming from the EU's emergency reserves, ECHO said, while the other 500,00 are being donated by Austria. 

Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and has been occupied by Russian forces since early March. Since then, international watchdogs have voiced concern that unsafe behavior could trigger a major nuclear disaster. 

In recent weeks, shelling around the plant has damaged the facility and disconnected it from the local power grid. Britain's Defense Ministry has said that the occupying Russian forces appear to be using the plant's protective status as a shield, leaving Ukraine reluctant to attack because it doesn't want to cause a disaster. 

"No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a war theatre," EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put in danger. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately."

On Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency's chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said a mission is traveling to the nuclear plant this week to inspect its safety, stability, and security.

Flights are bad enough without having to endure bad smells, but frustratingly there’s little passengers can do to control who they are sat near on a plane. If another flier has bad body odour or has been sick – what can you do to mask the smell? A cabin crew member has revealed there’s a better option than simply up covering your airways and avoiding the pong. Flight attendant Sarah Steegar told airline forum FlyerTalk that crew have something that will help.

She revealed that a coffee pack is a good way to improve a smelly situation on a plane.

“Consider asking for a coffee pack,” posted Sarah. “It’s isn’t elegant, but it works!

“Here’s a quick side tip: Coffee packs are also great for when someone has been sick in the cabin.”

She also explained that cabin crew are unlikely to take on the chore of dealing with a smelly flier on your behalf unless asked.

Sarah added that if either you or the offending passenger can be moved to a different seat, this will be facilitated.

However, she points out that it’s worth being patient as the smell may dissipate.

“The good news is that four out of five times, offending smells have usually just been ratcheted up by travel stress, regardless of the underlying cause,” she wrote on FlyerTalk.

“If you give the odorous person five to 10 minutes to ‘defluster’ — after they’ve hoisted their suitcase, removing their sweater and had time to sit down — the smell usually settles down.”

If the smell doesn’t go away it is key to make sure the person moves as little as possible.

“My advice is for everyone to work together to keep the person still,” Sarah recommended.

“As a flight attendant, I’d try something like: “Would you like to be covered with a blanket, sir? Don’t move! I’ll just tuck you right in! Right up to your chin… Need something from your suitcase? I beg you, let me get that!’”

“I’m nice and all, but if you ever find me being suspiciously helpful to you? It might be worth asking yourself whether you’ve had a very, very long itinerary…”

If the unpleasant odour is bad enough, a passenger could be asked to leave the plane. However, this will be dependent on their health.

“If odours are due to illness or disability, there’s legally nothing to be done except engage our empathy,” said Sarah.

According to American Airlines’ Conditions of Carriage passengers will be removed “if you have an offensive odour not caused by a disability or illness.”

They will also refuse entry to passengers who “are clothed in a manner that will cause discomfort or offence to other passengers.”

This isn’t the only thing that could get you turned away from boarding a flight. 

On Virgin Atlantic you won’t be able to fly if you’ve had a general anaesthetic or dental treatment within 48 hours prior to your flight.
