Hunt arrived to the meeting of EU foreign ministers in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Thursday, saying that not only Brexit but also the transatlantic relations will be discussed “in a lot of detail” during the gathering.

“In the UK, we believe that we have prospered in Europe with unprecedented peace, economic prosperity because there’s been a strong friendship and relationship between the US and Europe,” he said.

As for the current rift between Europe and America, Hunt said “of course, there’s going to be times when we disagree, but I think now is the time when we should remember all the things in common that we have with the US and make sure that we continue that strong transatlantic partnership.”

Hunt’s attempt to reconcile the EU and US isn’t surprising, with London positioning itself as Washington’s prime ally in Europe. However, the European counterparts are unlikely to take top British diplomat’s words to heart as many in the block now believe that it’s time for the EU to learn to prosper and protect itself without the American assistance.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe can “no longer” entrust its security to the US and should finally “take responsibility” for guaranteeing its sovereignty. German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, also spoke about the need to “recalibrate the transatlantic partnership” with Washington, echoing previous statements by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Relations between the EU and US have lately deteriorated under US President Donald Trump, who unleashed a trade war against the block earlier this year, imposing harsh tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Berlin, Paris and other European capitals are also angered by Trump’s demands to increase military spending to 4 percent of their GDP in line with their commitment to the US-led NATO military alliance.

Another dividing issue is the Iranian nuclear deal, which Washington abandoned in May despite heavy lobbying from Macron and Merkel not to do so. The Trump administration reinstated economic restrictions against Tehran and threatened the European companies with sanctions if they continue doing business with Iran, which even led to an idea of own banking transactions system indented from the US being discussed in the EU.

  • North Korea is reportedly continuing to build missiles at a research facility despite its leader’s pledge to work toward “peace and prosperity” on the Korean Peninsula, The Washington Post reported on Monday night.
  • US intelligence officials familiar Pyongyang’s operations say that new evidence, including recent satellite photos, suggest the regime is producing at least one liquid-fueled ICBM at a research facility.
  • The factory reportedly produced two ICBMs, including the Hwasong-15 — a missile capable of reaching the US East Coast.

North Korea’s missile program continues at a research facility outside the country’s capital of Pyongyang, despite a pledge towards “peace and prosperity” made by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump in June, The Washington Post reported on Monday night.

US intelligence officials familiar with Pyongyang’s operations say that new evidence, including recent satellite photos, suggests that the regime is producing at least one liquid-fueled ICBM at the Sanumdong research facility, near Pyongyang.

‘Underpinning UK prosperity:’ New facility opens in Hampshire to develop & test laser cannon https://briefnews.eu/underpinning-uk-prosperity-new-facility-opens-in-hampshire-to-develop-test-laser-cannon/ https://briefnews.eu/underpinning-uk-prosperity-new-facility-opens-in-hampshire-to-develop-test-laser-cannon/#respond Sun, 26 Nov 2017 09:43:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/underpinning-uk-prosperity-new-facility-opens-in-hampshire-to-develop-test-laser-cannon/

UK arms giant QinetiQ has opened a new ‘center of excellence’ for the development and testing of cutting-edge laser cannon. The new facility, named Dragonworks, will be an operational playground for lasers designed for the military.

Among other things, the facility in Farnborough, Hampshire boasts a dedicated clean room for assembling laser weaponry, as well as “the UK’s only Reflective Hazard Assessment Tool” (RHAT), designed to examine how laser energy is reflected from different surfaces.

The first key project to be undertaken at Dragonworks will be the assembly and testing of the Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) currently being developed by the UK’s Dragonfire consortium. Components are set to arrive in early 2018, when QinetiQ will begin building the weapon’s laser source, the company said on its website.

Testing of the prototype will begin on UK ranges in 2018, climaxing in a major demonstration in 2019, the British government said in September. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dragonfire-laser-directed-energy-weapons
Once the characteristics of the laser have been figured out, the LDEW is to be installed on a warship, The Register reported.

Peter Cooper, the Project Technical Authority in the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), which manages the Dragonfire contract on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defense, said that the new facility in Farnborough is “a key step in delivering the Dragonfire project and reflects the continuing UK MOD investment, supported and enabled by industry funding, amounting to tens of millions of pounds in UK industrial skills and capabilities and underpinning UK prosperity.”

In September of last year, the British government said that a £30 million ($ 40 million) deal for a new laser, which could “transform weapons technology of the future and the development of the UK’s first laser weapon,” had been finalized. Financial support comes from the government’s new £800 million ($ 1 billion) Innovation Fund, which is also sponsoring research into “cutting edge anti-missile systems, tiny insect-inspired surveillance drones, quantum gravitational detectors, advanced protective materials, and airborne threat-targeting laser weapons.”

It is hoped that a novel laser weapon could “complement or replace existing weapons systems with the potential for significant benefits.” Such a weapon could be employed to protect the UK’s land and maritime forces, including ships, from such threats as “missiles or soldiers from enemy mortars,” according to a government statement.

Trump’s erratic trade policies are already undermining a key driver of economic prosperity https://briefnews.eu/trumps-erratic-trade-policies-are-already-undermining-a-key-driver-of-economic-prosperity/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-erratic-trade-policies-are-already-undermining-a-key-driver-of-economic-prosperity/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 15:52:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-erratic-trade-policies-are-already-undermining-a-key-driver-of-economic-prosperity/ Donald Trump Wilbur RossREUTERS/Jonathan Ernst

Many of the economists and investors who feared Donald Trump’s harsh trade promises during the presidential campaign have taken umbrage at some of the administration’s lack of follow-through on the divisive issue.

The president did abandon the long-negotiated Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement between 12 Pacific Rim nations, a move seen as deep blow to America’s global leadership, especially in Asia.

But despite tough campaign rhetoric against China, Trump backed off a promise to name the country a currency manipulator and raise tariffs on the world’s second largest economy and a major trading partner. This raises questions about Trump’s business ties to China, and how potential conflicts of interest may be shaping his foreign and trade policies.

And while the North-American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) looks to be on the ropes after the latest set of demands from the Trump trade team, the president took much longer than expected to go after this other campaign boogeyman, which he called the “worst deal ever made.”

However, experts on trade paint a much more worrisome picture of the administration’s words and actions.

Susan Ariel Aaronson, a senior fellow at the Center for International and Global Development, a think tank in Waterloo, Canada, says the uncertainty generated by Trump’s whimsical approach to policy is already hampering investments with and in the United States.

“Investors today have a lot of investing options, and frankly, other countries look more stable and better managed than the United States,” Aaronson, a professor at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington DC, wrote in a recent opinion column in Maclean’s.

BEA US FDIBureau of Economic Analysis“If investors can no longer take American stability — or even an adherence to the rule of law— President Donald Trump’s words and actions undermine confidence that government, companies and individuals will be treated in an evenhanded and accountable manner, and that the US will stay true to its commitments. And we are now seeing evidence that this is affecting how and where businesses invest their money.”

That evidence came in a recent Commerce Department report on foreign investment trends, which acknowledged that expenditures by foreign direct investors to acquire, establish or expand American businesses declined by $ 66.1 billion, or 15%, from $ 439.6 billion in 2015.

“That’s a mighty big plunge for the center of global capitalism,” said Aaronson.

At issue is no less than faith in the predictability of legal and regulatory systems. Effectively, policy has become so erratic under Trump that it’s almost like dealing with the sort of risk usually faced by emerging markets — a potential breakdown in the rule of law.

“Historically, foreign direct investment (FDI) performance is driven by multiple factors, only some which can be quantified,” Aaronson wrote. “The rule of law is one. In countries with strong rule of law, government officials as well as individuals and private entities are predictable, reliable and held to account.”

“Instead, Trump’s chaos and unpredictability are signaling a decline in the rule of law,” she concludes. “Trump’s trade policies tell investors that the mores they value — accountability, predictability and even-handedness — have been thrown out the window. Alienated potential investors, especially foreign investors, will respond to Trump’s actions by voting with their feet.”

Heartland Tech Weekly: The prosperity gap between the Rust Belt and Silicon Valley grows https://briefnews.eu/heartland-tech-weekly-the-prosperity-gap-between-the-rust-belt-and-silicon-valley-grows/ https://briefnews.eu/heartland-tech-weekly-the-prosperity-gap-between-the-rust-belt-and-silicon-valley-grows/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 02:22:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heartland-tech-weekly-the-prosperity-gap-between-the-rust-belt-and-silicon-valley-grows/

Yesterday, I reported on a new study from a nonprofit called the Economic Innovation Group on the distribution of “distressed” and “prosperous” neighborhoods in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, the most prosperous communities tend to be urban or suburban — nearly 90 percent of communities in the U.S. that are classified as “distressed” have fewer than 50,000 people. Many of the most prosperous cities — Austin, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle — are also tech hubs.

However, the study also reveals just how poorly many of the former industrial hubs of the Midwest and Northeast are doing. In the Rust Belt states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more than 40 percent of their ZIP codes have fewer jobs and businesses than they did in the year 2000.

The way that Rust Belt cities can turn it around, according to EIG cofounders John Lettieri and Steve Glickman, is to diversify their economy. The Rust Belt cities that are faring the best are college towns like Ann Arbor and Columbus. Thanks to their high populations of young people, these towns have been able to become R&D hubs in the Midwest that can support a more diverse array of businesses.

While the EIG report does paint a bleak picture of just how hard some cities will have to work to catch up to prosperous West Coast tech hubs, the good news is that states are starting to diversify their economies, slowly but surely.

A report that came out yesterday from trade group Software.org: The BSA Foundation showed that Heartland states like Kansas and Indiana are experiencing some of the largest percent increases in software jobs. From 2014 to 2016, Kansas added 6,100 jobs in the software industry, while Indiana added 8,880 jobs.

“Every single state’s economy or workforce is adding jobs and/or has added GDP from software directly,” Victoria Espinel, president of Software.org, told VentureBeat.

The most attractive place for tech outside of Silicon Valley is…Canada

ANALYSIS: It’s no secret that Google searches for “how to move to Canada” surged after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. But there’s now new data that Canadian startups are seeing more interest from U.S. workers than ever before, as first reported by Axios — and many of them are attributing it to dissatisfaction with U.S. politics. […]

Google Fiber has changed Kansas City but hasn’t transformed it

Google Fiber’s commitment to install free, high-speed internet service for Kansas City nonprofits is expected to end by January, City Hall says. Roughly 40 nonprofits are left to be connected. Over the years, hundreds of these organizations have signed up for what’s called Google Fiber Community Connections. Schools, libraries, community centers, even fire stations are fibered-up. So are the Liberty Memorial, Union Station and the Kansas City Museum, according to a report issued last March. (via Kansas City Star)

Steve Case warns tech firms to be ‘careful’ about growing backlash in Washington

Steve Case on Thursday warned big tech companies to be “careful” about the changing sentiment toward the industry in Washington and encouraged them to look for ways to create opportunity outside of Silicon Valley. “There is this growing sense, and you’re starting to hear it more in D.C., ‘Maybe these companies are a little too powerful. Maybe Silicon Valley is a little bit out of touch with the reality out there,’” the venture capitalist and AOL co-founder said at POLITICO’s Pro Summit. (via Politico)

Why the future looks like Pittsburgh

As cities around the country rush to respond to Amazon’s RFP for its new HQ2, it’s worth remembering that urban economies aren’t built by winning a contest; they are grown methodically by building on a region’s strengths. Indeed, the race for long-term prosperity isn’t defined by the month-long sprint to lure $ 5 billion of investment from Amazon; the real game is the marathon of figuring out which cities will lead in the research, development, and commercialization of breakthrough technologies such as autonomous systems and genomics, which by some estimates may constitute one-third of global GDP by 2025. (via CityLab)

Happiness Is The Key To Village Prosperity (And Keeping It Not On Fire) In Community Inc https://briefnews.eu/happiness-is-the-key-to-village-prosperity-and-keeping-it-not-on-fire-in-community-inc/ https://briefnews.eu/happiness-is-the-key-to-village-prosperity-and-keeping-it-not-on-fire-in-community-inc/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 01:25:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/happiness-is-the-key-to-village-prosperity-and-keeping-it-not-on-fire-in-community-inc/ communityInc_header.jpg

A happy community is a productive one, and Community Inc takes that to heart. In this village-building simulator, you will be charged with making sure that your community is thriving in both happiness and profits. By fostering better relationships and taking care of your workers, you’re sure to turn a healthy profit in Community Inc. Just mind your townsfolk’s fire-setting tendencies.

If you’ve ever had a truly rotten day where your happiness is completely in the dumps and your first inkling to combat it is to light something on fire – you might be a worker from Community Inc! The workers, called Lings, are very particular about their working conditions. If they don’t have proper food, bedding, and shelter, they get unhappy. It’s fair, no one likes to live like that. Unfortunately, for the player, this means that there could be an onset of pyromania.

I really enjoy the fire idea as a new twist on the genre, but as a player it terrifies me. Generally, when people were unhappy in this style of game, they would vacate or die – leaving you with options to repopulate and torture new unsuspecting residents to forage on the outskirts. Community Inc. wants you to think of the people (or they will burn your village down). The thought of losing so many resources made me rethink my usual strategy.

On top of making sure you have your happiness as high as you can manage, you’ll be greeted at various times by different races that may ask for trades that seem like a great idea or some that don’t offer much monetary value (but have bonuses to relationships). Sometimes these races will be more interested in fighting than trading, so, on top of keeping your Lings happy and healthy, you must keep your defenses strong

Community Inc will be releasing on Steam in Summer 2017! Plan your strategy and don’t let those Lings ignite your village!

For more information on Community Inc, you can check out their Steam page here. You can also check out their official site and follow the developments on Twitter and their Dev Blog.
