Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders blocked a Republican resolution to avert a rail strike and override workers.
  • Republicans want Congress to step in and enact contract recommendations, even if workers don't agree.
  • Sanders said that workers deserve paid sick leave, which is the demand holding up agreements.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont on Wednesday blocked a Republican proposal to push through an agreement for rail workers and prevent a potentially economy-stopping national strike.

The GOP-backed resolution would forgo workers' demands to be able to call out sick or for family emergencies. As the strike looms, Amtrak has canceled cross-country trips, and the Biden administration is scrambling  to help broker a deal.

"The CEOs in the freight rail industry need to understand that they cannot have it all," Sanders said during a Wednesday floor speech. "The rail industry must agree to a contract that is fair and is just. It is time for Congress to stand on the side of workers for a change and not just the heads of large multinational corporations."

Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Roger Wicker of Mississippi wanted Congress to pass a set of recommendations from a presidentially-appointed bipartisan panel and avert a strike, even if workers did not voluntarily agree to a deal.

"There are mechanisms that have been in the law for a long time to allow Congress to step in and prevent the economic disaster that would ensue," Wicker told Insider earlier on Wednesday. "I think it's time to invoke that provisional law."

The US Chamber of Commerce, which represents business interests, estimated a shutdown would cost the economy $ 2 billion a day. John Drake, VP of transportation, infrastructure and supply chain policy at the Chamber of Commerce, told Insider in a statement that he "welcomes" the Republican resolution.

But the proposal would potentially overrule workers' decision on their contract, which they've been bargaining since 2019, should workers not reach a voluntary agreement with rail carriers. Workers are set to strike on Friday if they do not reach an agreement; unions and rail carriers have been in discussions facilitated by Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and the Department of Labor throughout Wednesday. However, Congress taking action would force a new deal and avert a strike.

Sanders, Wicker, and Burr sparred over the workers' demands, with Sanders emphasizing that workers should get paid for time out sick — and a say in their contract.

"I wonder if the CEOs and top executives of the railroads would get fired if they got sick or had a medical emergency in their families," Sanders said. "I doubt it very much."

Sanders noted that rail workers would be entitled to no sick days, either paid or unpaid, under the current set of recommendations from the presidential panel. That's proven to be a hardline issue for the set of unions who haven't signed on to the tentative agreement.

"The Burr-Wicker resolution would take these fundamental rights away from workers," he said.

Burr said that the resolution is now in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and expressed confidence Republicans could lend most of the votes needed to pass the resolution. It would need 60 votes to cross the filibuster threshold, an amount of support it's very unlikely to garner. Ten Senate Democrats would need to join every Senate Republican for the measure to pass.

"I don't think anyone wants a strike or a lockout," Sanders said. "We hope that a settlement will be reached in the next day. In my view, if we reach a settlement, I would hope that the railroads — which are making huge profits — treat their workers with the respect they deserve."

Grey’s Recap: Wakeup Call — Plus, Did Amelia Accept Link’s Proposal? https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-wakeup-call-plus-did-amelia-accept-links-proposal/ https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-wakeup-call-plus-did-amelia-accept-links-proposal/#respond Fri, 09 Apr 2021 02:22:31 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-wakeup-call-plus-did-amelia-accept-links-proposal/ If the promos for Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy were to be believed, Meredith was at last to awaken in “Sorry Doesn’t Always Make It Right.” And as if she didn’t have enough to catch up on, what with Maggie and Winston’s engagement, Link got down on one knee all ready to propose to Amelia. Did Scout’s mom say yes? Was it even a real question-popping? Read on, and we’ll go over everything that transpired in the episode, Giacomo Gianniotti’s directorial debut.

‘HELL OF A HONEYMOON’ | As we began the hour, in part a continuation of action that kicked off on Station 19, Owen hollered at Jackson for pulling his residents from the ER to help with COVID testing, Teddy backseat-drove Mer’s treatment via Zoom on one of her last days off, Jo continued to bond with Luna, and Amelia marveled at the kids’ ability to create more laundry than existed… just as Link’s parents showed up in the driveway in their RV. They had a bright idea, too: taking the youngsters on a COVID-safe road trip, thereby giving Link and Amelia a break. At Grey Sloan’s testing site, Jackson shared with Levi that he’d sat through endless Catherine Fox Foundation meetings to get the hospital extra tests. In peds, Cormac and Reza treated a baby named Arthur who was waiting with anxious dad Chris for a heart transplant. Finally, Station 19 newlyweds Shane and Carissa were brought to the ambulance bay by our firefighters. He was still pissed that she’d begged the first responders to save her first, and to hell with the guy she’d married only earlier that day.

‘DON’T TELL HER HOW I AM, SHE DOESN’T GET TO KNOW ANYTHING’ | While treating Carissa, the bride beseeched Jo to put her in the same room as Shane. When she admitted to Tom what she’d said to Shane in a moment of panic, Koracick cracked that maybe she could blame it on brain bleed. When Jo filled in Shane on Carissa’s condition, he instructed her not to tell his wife that he was being wheeled into surgery — or anything. Natch, Carissa realized at once that Shane was still mad. “I was wrong that no one would miss him,” she cried. “It’s only been a few hours, and I already miss him so much, I could burst.” Shortly, Jo filled in a still-unconscious Mer as a way of backing into admitting that she wanted to change specialties. “Since Alex left, my house hasn’t been my happiest place,” Jo said, “so I want work to be.” Oh, and she’d repeat it all when Grey woke up. “I can’t take any more worst days here.” Following Shane’s surgery, he seemed ready to stick a fork in his brand-new marriage — until Bailey gave him what-for. At last, he asked to see his bride, at least via tablet. Only when they were face to face, he told Carissa that he wanted an annulment. She’d been selfish when he met her and was selfish now, he just no longer found it charming.

greys-anatomy-recap-season-17-episode-11-meredith-wakes-up‘LET’S HAVE SEX IN THE KITCHEN!’ | Left alone at home without the kids, Link and Amelia started down the path to sexytime when she broke down crying. In response, off a remark from his mom about Amelia being his wife, Link got down on bended knee. But that wasn’t what she wanted at all, she just needed a good cry. “It just hit me,” she later said, “that it’s been months since I was able to feel whatever I want without worrying that I’m going to scar a child.” But, um, did she want to marry him? Did he want to marry her? He’d sworn he’d never put a kid through what he went through with his folks’ divorce. And she feared that she was wired for self-destruction; lately, she’d gone to sleep dreaming of getting high. She even thought about it when she was feeding Scout. Later, she shared that she couldn’t so much as smoke weed because if she did, she might forget that she couldn’t do heroin. So “for the record, I would marry you in a hot minute,” Link said. She was stronger than most addicts. With that, he got down on one knee again, and she hollered, “No!” again. Later still, Amelia admitted that she loved Link so much, it was all she could do not to have a panic attack. In exchange for her not getting high, he promised to no longer propose to her in a remotely compulsory manner. With that, they took advantage of the empty house and the roaring fire… just as his parents returned with the kids.

‘YOU WANT TO CUT OUT A PART OF HIS HEART?!?’ | When Cormac found Chris in a state, the doc invited him to go outside or to the chapel… “So I can pray for someone else’s kid to die?” Chris asked. He then admitted that Arthur’s mom Holly had been struggling desperately since the pandemic hit. Maybe it was postpartum or the state of the world… but it was bad. “We can’t lose” the baby, Chris sobbed to Hayes. Hoping to save the tot, Cormac attempted to recruit Maggie. “Aren’t you supposed to be a genius or something?” he asked when she suggested throwing in the towel. “It’s not giving up,” she replied, “it’s letting [the parents] go on.” Luckily, a conversation with Jo about forgiving her mother gave Cormac an idea about how to treat Arthur. Chris was skeptical: cut out a part of Arthur’s heart to put in a pump? He had to call Holly. Before the procedure, the new dad tearfully told his baby that he’d already given his parents a lifetime of joy. Miraculously, Maggie and Cormac pulled it off! “He’s OK,” Chris told Holly. “And bionic!”

greys-anatomy-recap-season-17-episode-11-meredith-wakes-up‘HOTELS ARE KICKING PEOPLE OUT TO MAKE ROOM FOR YOUR NEW ARRIVALS’ | Trying to do some good, Jackson began letting Levi book hotel rooms for patients who tested positive for COVID and had nowhere to safely quarantine. But his good deed backfired, it seemed. A community-outreach program was being stymied by his efforts — their homeless beneficiaries were being thrown out to make room for Richie Rich’s. Ah, he hadn’t realized that that would happen, he told Mama Ortiz when she called him out. Great, she fired back. “We’ll just tell everyone it wasn’t on purpose. That should keep ’em real warm tonight.” Though he remedied the situation, Alma would cut him no slack. Temporary fixes weren’t real fixes. What’s more, “all of this is too much,” she cried. Later, Jackson paged Alma, who quickly apologized for speaking up for underserved communities. But he felt the same way — and wanted to hear her ideas, based on her past stint as a social worker. She had good ideas, he had deep pockets — they could make a hell of a team.

greys anatomy season 17 episode 11‘HELLO, SLEEPYHEAD’ | As the episode neared its conclusion, Mer woke up and immediately apologized to Richard for having had to put her on a vent. However, “I’m glad I chose you,” she added. Oh, and “we need to talk about Wilson.” Guess Mer heard what Jo’d said earlier about changing specialties! As Jo was leaving the hospital at the end of the day, Richard approached her offering his support. But he had to know what was going on. Back at Mer’s, Link suggested that he and Amelia check in every few weeks to make sure that they were comfortable with their decision not to tie the knot. “Are we super broken or super evolved?” she asked. Definitely the latter, he said. At Owen’s, he apologized to Teddy for his reaction to her confession about Allison. He also admitted that he should’ve known she was going through something to do what she had to him with Tom. He wasn’t sure if he could be more to her now than a friend, but at very least, he wanted to be that. Credit where it’s due: That’s progress, Owen. In our last shot, Bailey, Richard and Maggie marveled at how amazing Mer was. Even when she was sleeping, she was apparently listening.

Bob Hearts Abishola EP Breaks Down Season 2 Premiere Proposal Twist, Confirms [Spoiler]’s Imminent Arrival https://briefnews.eu/bob-hearts-abishola-ep-breaks-down-season-2-premiere-proposal-twist-confirms-spoilers-imminent-arrival/ https://briefnews.eu/bob-hearts-abishola-ep-breaks-down-season-2-premiere-proposal-twist-confirms-spoilers-imminent-arrival/#respond Tue, 17 Nov 2020 02:38:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bob-hearts-abishola-ep-breaks-down-season-2-premiere-proposal-twist-confirms-spoilers-imminent-arrival/

Bob Hearts Abishola opened Season 2 with a marriage proposal — but it didn’t pan out the way Bob had planned.

In Monday’s episode, Bob enlisted Tunde’s help to buy an engagement ring. Shortly thereafter, Abishola caught wind of Bob’s intentions and confronted him before he could pop the question.

Without going into great detail, Abishola shared her belief that a traditional marriage is more trouble than it’s worth. As she previously explained to Kemi and Gloria, a traditional Nigerian wedding would first require her to return to her native land with Bob so the sock salesman could present himself to the rest of her family. She’d also have to confront her estranged husband and ask for a divorce.

In the end, though, Abishola had a change of heart. When Bob caught up to her on her bus ride home from work, determined to make the nurse his bride-to-be, Abishola cut him off and asked him to marry her. “This is going to be so hard,” she told him. “But since when have things ever been easy for us?”

Reflecting on the premiere, showrunner Al Higgins tells TVLine that it was fellow co-creator Chuck Lorre who sold him on the proposal storyline. “We weren’t always planning to have Bob and Abishola get engaged so soon,” he says. “Lorre is the one who said, ‘Let’s speed this up. This show is about love, so let’s give the audience something hopeful.’”

Once that idea was etched in stone, it was determined that it should be Abishola, not Bob, who popped the question. “We thought it would be nice to see Abishola’s journey, from initially fighting this relationship in the pilot to ultimately being the one who asked to spend the rest of her life with Bob,” Higgins explains.

Bob Hearts Abishola Season 2, Episode 1Moving forward, Season 2 will address all of Abishola’s concerns about marrying Bob, beginning with the arrival of Abishola’s as-yet-unseen husband. “Bob and Abishola are willing to go to Nigeria and deal with this, but the situation is brought home, so to speak, when her first husband, now successful, comes to Detroit on business,” Higgins reveals. “There will of course be trials and tribulations leading up to their wedding, but know, no matter what, Bob and Abishola love each other and that will win out in the end.”

Emily Maitlis reveals what husband Mark REFUSED to do after shock marriage proposal https://briefnews.eu/emily-maitlis-reveals-what-husband-mark-refused-to-do-after-shock-marriage-proposal/ https://briefnews.eu/emily-maitlis-reveals-what-husband-mark-refused-to-do-after-shock-marriage-proposal/#respond Sat, 20 Apr 2019 09:10:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emily-maitlis-reveals-what-husband-mark-refused-to-do-after-shock-marriage-proposal/

Breaking with tradition, the Newsnight host proposed to her husband Mark Gwynne in 2000 when the couple were on holiday in Mauritius.

However, after she did, he refused a suggested she made about their wedding day.

The revelation came during Emily’s appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, which airs tonight on ITV.

She explained: “It was a really weird one because we’d flown on Millennium night – the 31st December 1999 – and everyone had said that ‘the planes are going to go mad, don’t go in the air, it’s all going to crash, the systems are going to go down’ and so we kind of went, ‘Sod it, let’s see what happens.’

“We didn’t have kids, we were happy, we were in love. We were kind of thinking, I don’t believe it.

“I just thought, I think it’s going to be fine. We went on this flight, it was amazing… They were doing the Can-can around the plane as midnight struck, it was amazing.

“That was the context in which we landed, it was a ‘happy-to-be-alive’ week. It was about day three [of our holiday] and I’d packed this white dress and I thought, ‘What have I got to lose?’

“And so I proposed and he went, ‘Oh my God, that’s amazing, no.’ I was like, ‘We could get married on the beach on Friday, I’ve packed a dress.’ So he said yes to the proposal but no to [getting married there and then on the beach].

“He was right, because he realised it would have hurt a lot of people and a lot of loved ones back home.”

Emily and Mark married and went on to have two sons, Milo and Max.

While appearing on the ITV chat show, Emily also spoke about her Brexit eye-roll that went viral last month.

Following the second defeat of Theresa May’s Brexit deal, Emily interviewed a panel of MPs.

But as Labour MP Barry Gardiner explained what his party’s stance would be on Brexit in their manifesto if an election were held in the following week, Emily appeared to give an exasperated eye-roll.

Emily explained what was going on in the moment, saying: “I didn’t even register doing it.

“I think we’ve all been consuming too much Fleabag haven’t we?” she said referring to the BBC comedy where the main character frequently breaks the fourth wall.

She continued: “It wasn’t that I disagreed with a policy, I’d just been speaking to the Conservative Minister, then I went to the Labour Minister and I was just like, ‘Somebody please just tell me the truth, please just explain your position’ because neither one of them had.

“My job is just to elicit some kind of sense for the audience, some sort of an answer that makes sense, that’s what everyone watches us for, they don’t want my opinion but they do want me to try and understand what they are telling us.”

Emily was appointed as Newsnight’s lead presenter earlier this year as she replaced Evan Davis.

On her new appointment, Emily said: “I am delighted to be moving into this role at a time when Newsnight feels so pivotal to our understanding of this extraordinary moment in British history, and to be working with such an exceptional team.”

The Jonathan Ross Show airs tonight at 9.20pm on ITV.

AUSTIN, Texas—”So yesterday you made a pretty big announcement about tech. Then like the gangster you are, you flew down to a tech conference… “

Time Editor-at-Large Anand Giridharadas led with that at his South by Southwest conversation with Massachusetts Senator and 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren. The politician didn’t miss a beat. Barely 24 hours after she made headlines by publicly proposing that the US should break up companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook as part of a plan to regulate tech platforms as utilities, Warren took the opportunity to further emphasize her idea.

“Today, we have companies like Amazon: they have a platform. I buy a coffee maker and use it all the time, but Amazon also sucks out an incredible amount of info about every buyer and every seller. Then, Amazon makes the decision to have a competing coffee machine and drive out the business in that space,” she explained. “They have this incredible advantage from the information they get from their platform and the fact they can also manipulate the platform, putting themselves on page 1 and put the competitor on page 16 where no one ever goes… My view is break those things apart, and we’ll have a more robust market in America.”

EU copyright laws face uncertain fate after 11 countries reject proposal https://briefnews.eu/eu-copyright-laws-face-uncertain-fate-after-11-countries-reject-proposal/ https://briefnews.eu/eu-copyright-laws-face-uncertain-fate-after-11-countries-reject-proposal/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 21:13:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eu-copyright-laws-face-uncertain-fate-after-11-countries-reject-proposal/

Internet giants like Google might breathe a little easier in Europe… at least, for now. The EU has called off January 21st negotiations for a final vote on the controversial Copyright Directive after 11 countries, including Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, said they wouldn’t support the latest version of the proposal. European Parliament Member Julia Reda noted that most of these countries (Croatia and Portugal are exceptions) have previously argued that the disputed Articles 11 and 13 of the directive didn’t do enough to protect users’ rights, and this may have played at least some part in their opposition.

Critics have regularly described Article 11 as a “link tax,” since it gave companies the right to charge sites like Google for merely including content with links, even if it’s just a brief snippet to show the user what they’re seeing. Article 13, meanwhile, has raised concerns that internet companies would be virtually required to implement copyright filters and wouldn’t have enough protections for fair use rights.

This doesn’t mean that the Copyright Directive is gone, or that Articles 11 and 13 will go away. However, it may need a significant overhaul if it’s going to come to a vote. That, in turn, could delay any implementation. European elections are scheduled for May, just two months after the originally planned March vote on the Directive — there isn’t much room to breathe if there’s a significant setback.

Three natural gas distributors issued a report this week detailing plans to convert the UK’s residential gas system to a hydrogen delivery system. UK firms Northern Gas Networks and Cadent, as well as Norwegian gas firm Equinor, wrote that the proposal (PDF) was technically feasible. They also suggested an initial roll-out of the program to 3.7 million homes and 400,000 businesses in Northern England could commence as soon as 2028.

“This project could represent the foundations of a deliverable, large-scale, deep decarbonization of heat policy for the UK government,” the gas firms’ report reads.

The plan calls for the conversion of residential natural gas pipes to higher-pressure pipes that can move hydrogen gas. Although hydrogen gas tends to be flammable at a wider range of temperatures than natural gas, the report states that “a 100 percent hydrogen gas grid represents an acceptable risk compared to the current natural gas grid.”

Federal, provincial governments reach agreement on funding proposal for Calgary 2026 Olympic bid https://briefnews.eu/federal-provincial-governments-reach-agreement-on-funding-proposal-for-calgary-2026-olympic-bid/ https://briefnews.eu/federal-provincial-governments-reach-agreement-on-funding-proposal-for-calgary-2026-olympic-bid/#respond Wed, 31 Oct 2018 11:10:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/federal-provincial-governments-reach-agreement-on-funding-proposal-for-calgary-2026-olympic-bid/

The federal and provincial governments have reached an agreement to consider a funding proposal that would mean the public dollars are in place to fund the 2026 Winter Olympics in Calgary, if a hesitant city council agrees to sign on.

The Calgary 2026 bid corporation sent out an announcement at 10 p.m. M.T. Tuesday that included a letter saying the required total of $ 2.875 billion of public funds, in 2018 dollars, would be met.

It was signed by Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, federal Minister of Sport Kirsty Duncan and included a space for Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi's signature.

The announcement comes late on the same day the chair of the City of Calgary's Olympic assessment committee recommended to council that it end its pursuit of the 2026 Winter Games and cancel a plebiscite scheduled for Nov. 13.

"This is a proposal that makes sense and is a good deal for Calgarians. I'm confident we and our government partners can agree to move forward and reach an agreement in principle," said Scott Hutcheson, board chair of the Calgary 2026 bid corporation, in the emailed release.

"I know City Council understands how important this is to Calgary, that they know what's at stake here, and that they will show their strong leadership and allow Calgarians to decide the outcome of the Olympic and Paralympic bid at a plebiscite Nov. 13."

Bid's future up in the air

That plebiscite's future — and the future of the bid itself — was set to be decided by city council first thing Wednesday.

Coun. Evan Woolley said Tuesday it wouldn't make sense to move forward without a funding agreement in place between municipal, provincial and federal levels of government — something they up until now hadn't been able to forge amid public spats on the weekend and a marathon negotiation session Tuesday.

Woolley said he was "deeply disappointed" but that with the funding costs still not nailed down, it wasn't fair to expect Calgary voters to make an informed decision in just two weeks.

His comments came after the Olympic assessment committee met behind closed doors for four hours, finally deciding to send Woolley's motion with a series of recommendations on killing the bid to council for a vote.

If 10 of council's 15 members vote in support of the motion on Wednesday, Calgary's Olympic bid is dead.

Revised cost to host

Calgary 2026 Olympic bid corporation estimates the Winter Games would cost $ 5.23 billion, with about $ 3 billion of that needing to come from the three levels of government.

But the letter states that the new funding proposal is "based on a revised Games concept with a total public funding request of $ 2.875 billion," but includes no word on how this lower cost would impact the draft hosting plan.

Calls to Calgary's mayor and the head of the city's bid assessment committee were not returned Tuesday night.

James Millar, communications director for the Calgary 2026 bid corporation, said the lowered cost was because they were able to find "efficiencies" in the budget.

"Discussions are still ongoing with the city, but we felt it was important once we got the confirmation from the province and federal government this evening, just to be fully transparent, put out the update and put out the numbers best we could this evening in lieu of knowing there was a vote tomorrow morning at council about this matter," Millar said.

Millar said the efficiencies included lowering the estimate of how much security would cost, based on revised numbers from the RCMP.

"We think we have a good deal for Calgarians," said Millar.

The letter sets out the proposed contributions from each level of government:

  • From the City of Calgary, $ 370 million in cash, and $ 200 million in insurance redemption which would cover a "defined contingency."
  • From the City of Calgary and Government of Alberta, $ 150 million in pre-authorized improvements to Victoria Park and access to the Calgary Stampede grounds.
  • From the Government of Alberta, $ 700 million in cash.
  • From the Government of Canada, $ 1.423 billion, which matches the amounts committed to the core event costs by the province, city and Town of Canmore; also, $ 30 million in "leveraging initiatives" which the letter said are identified in the hosting plan.

The $ 700-million figure matched an earlier pledge from the province, while the federal government had previously said it would contribute about $ 1.75 billion in 2026 dollars ($ 1.5 billion in today's dollars). The federal contribution would hold only if the city and province's total contribution matched, the city said.

That meant the city would need to come up with $ 800 million — an amount Nenshi has called "not a good deal."

How the city would fund the proposal was not immediately clear.

Coun. Jeromy Farkas, who has been an outspoken critic of the bid, posted on social media that the funding proposal "invites more questions than answers."

He said he was worried about where costs had been cut in the draft plan, adding that he dislikes the idea of the city carrying risk of cost overruns.

The province has also said its money was contingent on Calgarians supporting the bid in the Nov. 13 plebiscite, regardless of turnout.

Utter lunacy? ‘Moonmoon’ naming proposal for moons of moons proves divisive https://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/ https://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 16:08:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/

Astronomers think it’s possible that moons can have their own mini-moon – but the scientific suggestion that they should be called ‘moonmoons’ is not going down well among those with a more poetic inclination.

READ MORE: NASA administrator shows off historic spaceship…made of Lego

The term ‘moonmoons’ started with astrophysicist Duncan Forgan, reports ScienceAlert, who has written a paper awaiting publishing on the topic.

More recently, astronomers Juna Kollmeier and Sean Raymond wrote their own paper describing how moonmoons could actually be possible. However, they opted for a slightly less ridiculous, but equally disappointing, name of ‘submoon’.

Twitter users in particular are very displeased at the missed opportunity to name something that is not technically even a thing right now, but very well might be confirmed as a thing in the future.

While ‘moonmoons’ may not actually be the agreed upon term for this speculative phenomenon (we’re guessing that honor goes to the person who actually finds a real-life example), that didn’t stop the Australian House of Representatives throwing shade over the suggestion.

To really throw a spanner in the works, another planetary astronomer, Michele Bannister of Queens University Belfast, told New Scientist that she would tend to opt for a ‘moonmoonlet’, to be precise.

“I think we can say for sure that there’s not a moonmoon that’s kilometers across around Jupiter or Saturn. A moonmoon down to the size of a skyscraper could exist out there, but I’d call it moonmoonlet,” she explained.

Russian subsidiaries of banking majors, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Raiffeisen, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank and HSBC Holdings, have voiced their objections to plans that would limit the Russian units to depositing just 20 percent of their capital abroad at their parent companies. Under the current regulations, there is no limit for banking operations of this kind.

The Central Bank of Russia proposed the rationing measures in response to fresh anti-Russia sanctions from the US and Europe that could allow foreign lenders to block access to the funds for its units based in Russia, two sources close to the issue told Bloomberg. The targeted lenders say they will have to reduce their loan services in Russia, according to unnamed people quoted by the agency.

If the new rules enter force, most of the local units run by foreign banks will inevitably be in violation of the mandated capital ratios. Some of the lenders, including Nordea Bank and Commerzbank, say the measure will create “unequal” conditions for local banks and foreign-owned subsidiaries.

Ahead of the US mid-term elections in November, the US Congress is actively discussing potential punitive measures against Russia over its alleged meddling in US elections. Among the penalties is a ban on using US dollars for some of Russia’s biggest banks. In August, local banking bonds brought investors a loss of 5.1 percent in dollar terms, the worst of any sector domestically, according to a Bloomberg Barclays index.

According to the Central Bank of Russia, the final version of the rule is still being discussed. The regulator didn’t elaborate on the goal of the restrictions or on the fate of the proposal.
